Comments:Start The Car are looking for a roadie to help them
with their gigs around Beds and Cambs. Mick, the
band's singer describes the job as being "crap money
but great music and all the women you can eat (we're
far too old now for that sort of thing)."
He also says that applicants should be able to drive
and although the band already use their drummer's van
and tow a trailer, if you have a van yourself that's
an added bonus which will probably see the band give
you a fancy title like "Road Manager" which entitles
you to get the first round in.

Comments:Andy - bass player looking for a band? Have you thought about coming down to one of the jam nights in Bedford? - it's the perfect place to meet other musos and chat / play - and let people know you're looking.
The two jams I would recommend where rock and punk are quite popular are Wednesdays at the Paddington, Midland Road, Bedford from about 8:30pm run by Mat Roberts, and Thursdays at the Bird In Hand, Brickhill, Bedford from about 8:30pm run either by Mat Roberts or myself. Admission is free every week, and they both have a really good vibe. Look forward to seeing you- introduce yourself!

Comments:Hello everyone!

I am the editor of the international Ritchie Blackmore magazine and a Bedford resident. I am currently writing a biography on Blackmore and during my research I have established that he played in Bedford in the very early 60s a couple of times.

That got me thinking of all the other famous names who have also played here over the years and I intend my follow up book to be a document of all the Bedford gigs from the mid fifties. The main objectives would be to get first hand anecdotes of encounters and experiences seeing acts who came to Bedford. Also I would love to track down photos as this would make the book far more appealing. As examples, The Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, New Order and Oasis all played Bedford at least once. Do you have any memories or memorabilia from any gigs? If so I'd love to hear from you.

Our last gigs there have not been well attended and now we don't seem to be playing The Lizard anymore (has it shut down for good?) it would be a shame if our Bedford days are numbered. Steve (my better half!) plays at the Ship St. Cuthbert's Street on jam nights. It's a nice relaxing atmosphere with lots of local talent including Paul Bonas. Steve plays all sorts but does some lovely harmonies with his mate Dave singing Simon & Garfunkle but good lively stuff as well - Venus (Shocking Blue), Beatles, Stones, etc. as well as a bit of Chaz & Dave to get people's feet tapping. Come along and enjoy the company and great music.

Its a bit of a quiet year for us, what with some of us having additions to the family and tying the knot! BUT we are back soon at ESQUIRES in July and THE CORNERHOUSE in October. Its been a while, but we're looking forward to them!

Also - BEER FESTIVAL!! We are booked to play at a new 3 day Beer Fest over in Haddenham, Cambs, so not too far away! The event is still awaiting confirmation, but if it goes ahead, we're playing on a 2nd stage, doing 2 or 3 half hour sets, during the main day, Sat 21st August. See our home page for the link!

See you around!

Comments:Hi Nick,

I guess I'm unknown to all you musos in Bedford now as I last lived and played in the area between 1982 and 1988. I've just seen (10 mins ago) your website and discovered that Sid Worth has passed on. To say I'm gutted is a cliche but true - in all honesty it has really saddened my day. We never played live together but I remember many occasions when we sat talking and playing together in his shop (Harpur Street), HMV (upstairs music shop) and, before that was it Mr Music??? I still have a guitar I bought through Sid (acting on behalf of Kit Morgan - is he still around ?... If he is tell him I've still got the Overwater !) which now has a more special meaning.
I'm really sorry I didn't know about the memorial gig for Sid as I'd liked to have made the trip up (I now live, play and teach in Hampshire) to be there. Unfortunately I'll be out of the country for Sept 28th so can't make that gig either.

Anyway . . . just wanted to pay my respects to an old friend ....... thanks Sid!

Rgds,

After a "bit" of a rocky patch (which we haven't really publised), with the band "retiring", we are now back and firing on all rotors (its a Mazda thing).
We have recruited a new drummer to give us a well deserved kick-up-the-arse (our ears are still ringing!), and are back in rehearsals with a slightly different set (Quo content reduced, other stuff increasing - there should be a decent balance between the two). We're looking forward to getting back out again...so you you soon.

Cheers.

Our drummer (who we shall not be using again!!) decided to take another gig without telling us. We only found out about this a few days before (he didn't even bother telling us!), so we were forced into cancelling. Real shame, 'cos we were looking forward to playing there again.
To anyone who was going to come along, apologies, but our hands were tied unfortunately.

We have in fact just recruited a fifth member, a fantastic keyboardist/vocalist/harpist/guitarist (multitalented or what?!) after a great charity gig down in London. We were soimpressed with him, that we offered him a place with the band, when he can make the gigs (he lives in SE London).

We've just completed our last gig of the year, in Welwyn (21st). Unfortunately we had to cancel our last Bedford gig, the weekend before (14th), 'cos Mark had hurt his wrist and couldn't play. We are also booking for next year.

So, as and when we play beackin Bedord, hope to see you there, and prove we are ghosts!!
