Comments:Hi everyone, I noticed that there hasn't been to much going on with my fellow Marines writing down anything in the Dreambook so I thought I'd be the 1st in quite some time. I still keep in touch with David Fowler and will until I can't type anymore. David and I were in boot camp together and I feel that he has been the only one that I've really kept in contact with. When the wife and I built our home 7 year's ago Dave was the 1st phone call that we had the night that we moved in.
Can't wait to see him and his family again hopefully at the next re-union or sooner. I just wish that more of the Marines that I met in Ft. Walton would take time to say Hi once in awhile just because we all have something in common and will forever.
Take care everyone and Love to you all.

> passage by unanimous consent of his bill (S.1877) clarifying U.S. law to
> allow veterans and servicemen not in uniform to salute the flag.
> Current law (US Code Title 4, Chapter 1) states that veterans and
> servicemen not in uniform should place their hand over their heart
> without clarifying whether they can or should salute the flag.
>
>
> "The salute is a form of honor and respect, representing pride in one's
> military service," Senator Inhofe said. "Veterans and service members
> continue representing the military services even when not in uniform.
> Unfortunately, current U.S. law leaves confusion as to whether veterans
> and service members out of uniform can or should salute the flag. My
> legislation will clarify this regulation, allowing veterans and
> servicemen alike to salute the flag, whether they are in uniform or not.
> I look forward to seeing those who have served saluting proudly at

The mountains were beautiful the lake devine and the fun and friendship beyond belief. It was so great to see everyone again and especially renewing old friendships. I feel so at peace after each of our reunions, I know there can never be any closer bond than with those of us who were there on 15 May 1975. Thanks to all who made this happen and especially Tina who seems to have tireless energy regardless of the task. And to all Koh Tang Vets out there, you have got to make every effort to make the next reunion and I promise you that if you make one, it won't be your last.

Comments:Hi, my name is Susan Evans and I am the sister of PFC Danny G. Marshall. I would like to thank all of you that have gone to his web page and signed his guest book.We tried to make his web page about him and what went on that day. We want it to be a place all of you can go to and tell your story and Maybe find the truth and the missing pieces of the puzzle. I have read so many thing that were not true at all or half truths that we thought there should be one place you guys could tell what really happened to you in your own words. I especially want to thank Jeff Kern, and John Parks because of all the contributions they have made to the site. The flag and the story Jeff told are invaluable to me. I am still trying to find out who the other 2 guys are in the pic of Danny leaning on the rock!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know it is still hard for most of you to talk about and I respect that. It is sometimes hard for me to hear but in the end I know I can deal with the truth and all the lies can never be dealt with. When you are ready and want to talk to someone I am more than willing to listen. I pray WE can find the truth eventually. None of you are responsable for what happened over there although I'm sure many of you think you are. You were KIDS, taking orders and you did what you had to. Don't carry guilt over it, Danny wouldn't want that!!! Lets find the ones really responsable and together we can do that !!!!!!!!! Well thank you all for listening and again thanks for making his web site what it is. Remember it is for you guys too. There will be NO buracratic B.S. on his site. Thank you so much all of you!!!!!!! I know you did what you could!!!!!!!!
Thanks for listening,
Susan

Dear sir,
It is my wish that you share this message with the other members of the Koh Tang Beach Club. On this bitter sweet day, 32 years after. I wish to extrend to you all, my condolences and admiration for what you all went through on this date 32 years ago. You all are not forgotten. I thank each and everyone of you personally for your sacrifices then and now. It is something that I, like so many others before us, you relive on a daily basis. I wish I could have done more and so many times wonder, why did I come home. God bless you all, you will forever live in my heart.

Comments:I am on a mission to have Allen E. Bailey (PFC) G-2/9 West Beach (Knife 21) be awarded the Purple Heart for shrapnel wounds sustained while on Koh Tang in 1975. At this point I am very close to proving, without a doubt this happened, however the Purple Heart review person is requesting additional eye witness letters.

Allen was assigned to the eight-man patrol lead by 2nd Lieutenant James McDaniel with the mission to link-up with Colonel Austin’s group. During that link-up Allen was struck over nine times (scars documented on medical report) from shrapnel by exploding grenades. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Citation with Value for this, but did not receive his Purple Heart.

During the evacuation off Koh Tang (Jolly 44 to US Holt), Allen was then pierced through the left leg by an enormous thorn (scars documented on medical report). As described in one witness letter “The incident was singular in that there was no other occurrence at all like it, and it was the subject of much humor and discussion among personnel of our battalion.” He further stated Allen “was recommended for an award for personal bravery, and also for the Purple Heart for wounds less severe than those sustained from the thorn”.

My goal is to have Allen be honored with his long overdue military merit of the Purple Heart during the Koh Tang Beach Club 2nd Reunion Banquet in Fort Walton Beach, FL on May 1, 2008.

Any Marine remembering Allen and his injuries, please contact us as soon as possible.

Thank you and God Bless,

I know its hard to remember and I don't mean that in a forgetfull way. I wake up angry a lot but never, thank god have had to go thru the scope of this tragedy. If remembering hurts, don't talk about it but drop me an e-mail. But If you have something you want on the site send it. I don't care if its an e-mail telling me to _ _ _ _ off.

Comments:Yesterday I found this site and a flood of emotions came over me. For all these years I kept these emotions in. When I saw the pictures and read the guest book many things I put away in May of 1975 came back. Some things I forgot, some I never knew, and some things I chose to forget. I was 17 years old then serving as a plane captain for VA-94 aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea. Although I did not hit the beach I remember the brave Marines on our ship that did. I remember being on the flight deck and actually putting my finger in the holes on those Jolly Greens left by enemy fire. I remember carrying some of those brave Marines from the helo... some to see another day and some not. Back then I didn't really know what it was all about and didn't realize the impact of the operation. It really came to me when I thought of my own son returning from Iraq recently. He came home. I thought about those soldiers I carried and for the first time saw them as a son, a brother, a husband. I found this site and it helped me put it all together. Thank you

Because of poor communications, the U-2 out of U-Tapao served as a communications link to the 6908 ESS (located in USSAG) and, with runners, to Blue Chip (also in USSAG). I recall one of the 'reports' stating: Nail-69 states 'they ought to sink that (explitive deleted) island. I do recall that Blue Chip heeded your request - with the Daisy Cutter...

Your commentary provides a lot of light on what we could only hear from afar... Thanks!

HERE IS A COPY OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE

Navy Presidential Unit Citation

The Navy Presidential Unit Citation was established by Executive Order 9050 signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 6, 1942, and promulgated by Navy Department General Order Number 187 of February 3, 1943.
Effective Dates
The Navy Presidential Unit Citation has been in effect since October 16, 1941.
Criteria

The Navy Presidential Unit Citation is awarded in the name of the President to units of the Armed Forces of the United States and cobelligerent nations for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. The unit must have accomplished its mission under such extremely difficult and hazardous conditions to set it apart from and above other units participating in the same campaign. The degree of heroism required is the same as that which would be required for award of a Navy Cross to an individual.

Comments:I was the co pilot on Knife 52, we arrived at East beach around 11 to noon, made our run in but got shot off, turned right and had to go back to Utapao because we were very low on fuel and in fact did not quite reach Utapao before we had to land. I was at the Jolly Green Reunion last year and attended the briefing Sat afternoon. Obviously being a co pilot and never actually landing our troops I don't know a lot of details, the first two Knives had already been shot down and the survivors of one were the only Marines on the East beach when we arrived. I always felt bad that we never got to deliver our load but now realize it would have just made it tougher to get everyone out and we probably would have been shot down too while trying to land. Neither of our mini guns were operable so we would not have kept anyone's heads down for very long. It was not a good day. Intel always the short straw.

Its been 30 some years and if memory serves me we flew sorties or at least support from Udorn. I had a hat made while there commorating the interdiction. Frequent Wind - Eagle Pull- and the Mayaguaz stand out during my time there. I am a TLCB and an AIR FORCE Assoc. and VVA member as well. Great sight and keep the legacy alive for our future generation. Shall we never foorget those who paid with there lives.

the ship and crew were return around 1030 am THAT SAME MORNING. But we did-not getoff this place until around 2100hrs. PLUS WE LEFT A 3MAN MACHINE CREW ALIVE AND BEHIND -AN THEY THE BIG BRASS WOULD LET US GO BACKIN AND GET THESE GREAT MARINES OUT -THEY KNEW ABOUT 20 MIN. AFTER WE GOT BACK TO THE CORAL SEA SHIP-THEY WERE MORE CONCERN ABOUT STORAGING OUR WEAPONS I STILL FEEL UPSET THIS AFTER 31 YEARS ALMOST AND THE NAVY WOULD NOT TURN AROUND AND LET US GO BACK.

Comments:I was one of the Marines from Okinawa that landed on Koh Tang Island May 15, 1975. I never knew until now how big that operation was. I remember standing guard duty in Okinawa on May 13, watching some unusual action going on and then the SGT. of the guard telling me we had to pack up because we had to leave in the morning. We went to Kadena airfield and then flew to Thailand. We spent the day and then about sunrise on the 15th we flew out by helo to Koh Tang Island. The first two helo's got shot down and we landed a good distant from the orginal L/Z. I remember getting off the helo weigthed down with gear and ammo. I was in a 81mm mortar platoon. As we advanced up the shore line we would overcome huts that you could tell someone had just left, because a lot of them had food cooking or just cooked. After going a good distance up the beach we set up our mortar and while waitng for calls to fire the mortar we where overcome with small arms fire. Fortunately only one person got hit, our SSGT got hit in his right arm. We found out later that our forward observer was in one of the helo's that got shot down. He survived but was burned pretty bad. We where told to start digging foxholes and from the heat and walking up the beach with all that weight takes it toll on you. So it was very taxing trying to dig. We got word that the helo's were coming to get us and when they started to approach the beach you could hear that there was a large number of the enemy there by the sound of the round and the sight of the tracer round going out at the helo's. The helo's made it in and we broaded and landed on the Coral Sea which took us to the Phillipines. After getting back to Okinawa the Captian from the Mayaquez came to thank us.

Subject: Mayaguez - C3 Foul Up / Poor Communications

The Olympic Torch / U-2 flew in support of the Mayaguez operation - and because of extremely poor communications between the action and Blue Chip at NKP, the 6908th Electronic Security Squadron, together with the Aircraft Commanders flying the U2 out of U-Tapao, acted as relay...

Extremely poor atmospherics during that period of the year made direct communication between Blue Chip and the aircraft impossible. A work around had to be devised - and the 6908 and U2 pilots came up with the answer.

Choppers and OV-10s (from the 56th Special Operations Wing) chatter was picked up by the U2 pilots and relayed to the 6908th 'van' who then reported the action to the 6908th Reporting and Analysis Center, who then reported it both to ***, but also had to physically run the message 300 feet down the hallway to Blue Chip - who was then able to react and adjust the plan.

From our own Intel, the 6908th KNEW the ship wasn't on the island - but that info didn't make it to Blue Chip.

I was with E-2/9 3rd platoon,my location on the island stll remains in my mind. Staff Sargent Hale was my platoon Sargent, LT. Walt Davis was our platoon Commander.I along with others in my squad were patrolling and searching hooch to hooch, along with STAFF SARGANT Wright , Came across a 50mm Recoiless Rifle that had been firing on an L.Z. as we captured it, we were carrying it across the beach, and then , they opened up on us pinning us down, we fired back on them, threw grenades on them, and wiped them out We then destroyed the weapon, I was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal. I can remember a few of people in the squad. PFC. Hahn fron Ashville N.C. PFC Wagner from Tennessee, PFC Hernandez from Philadelpia, LCPL. Lambert from Michigan I do remember our C.O. CAPT. Stahl
.I also recall as we were being pulled off the island that night I passed Hall Hargrove and Marshalls position, and gave them almost all of my remaining Ammo since they were ordered to hold that anchor point, That is the last I saw of them, It saddens me every day Along with the other losses, P. S. Mark Duncan was with 3rd Platoon at the time not the second. Anyone remember that patrol? SEMPER-FI

And he said he thought the Ssgt with me was named Ssgt West. This is really unreal. Talking with guys I haven't seen in 27-30 years! His memory is good and he rattled off names I'd forgotten for all these years, Logan, Illas, Smitty, Lt Davis, etc. It's like getting a piece of my life back. Told him to visit the website and I'll refer the site to the guy at work that started me looking this all up. He was in HQ as a 81 mortarman and I don't think he knows this site exists.

God bless you all and the ones that can't be here anymore.

Comments:It's taken a few days for the effects of seeing "Deadly Reckoning" to set in. While I am very proud of my part in the program I wish to express that the program did not do enough to praise the real heros of the day, especially those killed or wounded. I was interviewed for almost 2 hours. My comments were edited down to very short remarks. I would be glad to share the entire contents of my interview with anyone interested. I spent much time recognizing true heros such as Lt. Col Austin, Capt. Davis, Lt's Keith, Cicerie, Tonkin, McDaniel and McMinemin amoung others. I will never be able to say enough about Bob Blough to whom I feel we owe our lives. The producers had to reduce it to an hour program. Perhaps for our reunion we can play all of the interview tapes. So glad our "footnote" has come to a better light. Semper Fi, Dan Hoffman

We all shared stories of our past, our families, our jobs, our lives in general, since the Rock and the Mayaguez and when they asked G2/9 and E2/9 to please stand up and be honored during the banquet, well, all I can say is, it was like standing amongst Giants. I mean whether yall know it or not, Koh Tang was another Wake Island. It was the Alamo of the Pacific and to say that you are my Brothers and fellow Marines gives me great pride. Nope, ....I really don't see a pattern here to justify profiling, do you? So, to ensure we Americans never offend anyone, particularly fanatics intent on killing us, airport security screeners will no longer be allowed to profile certain people. They must conduct random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, secret agents who are members of the President's security detail, 85-year old Congressmen
with metal hips, and Medal of Honor recipent and former Governor Joe Foss....... but leave Muslim Males between the ages 17 and 40 alone because of profiling.

As the writer of the award winning story "Forrest Gump" so aptly put it, "Stupid is as stupid does."
