| Comments: | I was aboard the Endurance from 19 July 1960 to 16 July 1962
In 1961 we were deployed to Subic Bay and then to Danang Viet Nam. Swept mines of Danang coast and then north to the North Viet Nam waters on patrol. We would anchor for 30 days at Danang and then move north and relieve another Sweep who then anchor. we had to repel boarders one evening which could have been a trawler. They threw boat hooks on us but decided to go away when they saw the men lined on the starboard side armed and ready. I was and EM2 and Minesweep electrician. |

| Comments: | Members of the minesweeping community; The Lucid MSO-458 Foundation was formed by a group of minesweeper crewmen who served aboard US Navy MSO's. MSO's are a class of wooden hull oceangoing minesweepers that are now decommissioned and fading from public memory. The group has obtained the USS Lucid MSO-458 and has her docked at Bradford Island, California. Work has begun! The organization is restoring her and a public museum is established. The MSO is a little known and poorly documented, extremely interesting facet of Naval history. The USS Lucid Museum is dedicated to telling the story of the minesweeping men and their wooden ships, the last all wooden US Naval ships, to navigate the oceans. We will be telling the stories of Mine Recovery and UDT teams, Floating Pigs, Hammer Boxes, Magtails, Aluminum Engines and Towed Sonar. The little known stories of Contact, Magnetic and Acoustic minesweeping as well as the mystery of Magnetic Countermeasures will be told through the displays, narratives and museum media. Typhoons, tiny ships and ice-clad superstructures are only a small part of the "Wooden Ships and Iron Men" story. From sweeping the Mekong Delta in Viet Nam, observing the final Nuclear blasts on Johnston Island to sweeping the Persian Gulf, "Where the Fleet Goes, We've Been" will be clearly illustrated. Since there is no other Naval Museum that even attempts to tell the story of the MSO the USS Lucid is an important and living detail of US Naval History. First, Lucid must undergo a restoration. Previous civilian owners for commercial use have modified her. She needs hull repairs and painting and re-outfitting to be brought back to her former Naval dignity and glory. The Lucid MSO-458 Foundation has a workforce of planners, engineers and volunteer manpower who are vested and committed to this grand and worthy project. Bringing her to life is a large financial undertaking. We’re looking for tax-exempt gifts from the Military Industrial sector and individuals to help with this extremely valuable endeavor. Of course, all donors will be properly and prominently acknowledged aboard the vessel. Your donation will help preserve this vital part of Naval History. Please join us in telling the MSO story by sending a tax-exempt gift to Lucid MSO-458 Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit foundation through our website. http://www.usslucid.org |

| Comments: | Served aboard Endurance 64-65. Came aboard midway during wespac deployment From USS Warbler MSC206, homeported in Sasebo. Was supposed to rotate back to the States, but had emergency orders to replace the STG on Endurance, who was thought to have contracted TB. He didn't have it and I had another long stay in wespac. Enjoyed the stay, great crew. Capt Smith was aboard, And I thought it rode like a caddy after the 2 years on the MSC.

| Comments: | Fantastic Web site. I served aboard the Endurance from 01/70 to 08/70. Swapped with the staff radioman attached to Cominediv-92 in August to return to recently married wife. Also served aboard the USS Excel (MSO-439) (NLPA) from 01/66 to 03/69 (Westpac 1967). Because of the minesweeper duty I ended up staying for 20 yrs., but never found anything like minesweeper duty again. The crews are a complete different group (family) of guys. The fantail BBQ's (without the blob), Casino nights using a frequency counter for a Roulette wheel, Subic Bay, boy what memories. I remember hating refresher training and constant fire drills and then we had a real fire. I think it took the DC crew like 3 mins. to have it under control. I knew there was a reason I always liked those 2:00 AM fire drills. Well, everyone stay safe and Thanks for the memories.

| Comments: | glad to hear that half of the hippie pair has made good as a judge. way to go dan hyatt. cannot remember the name of your cohort, who was my loader on stbd 50 the nite of our "engagement", but you two sure got "baptized" that nite. I don't remember anyone ever as excited as you two afterward. as I recall GMG3 Cotton was on port 50, EN3 Foley claims to have been on 30 cal barely missing being hit by recoiless rifle round that hit our stbd varnished woodwork. I saw Foley in 1981 at Great Lakes. He was on base maa force. Ensign Duffy, the chief engineer who decommed Endurance was Lcdr serving with JAG as defense attorney at that time also. EM2 Lawson aka "RAT" went back to Oklahoma I think, almost totally deaf from too many swbd watches in fwd engineroom. My recollections of the trawler fight vary somewhat from those listed. 20 fired approx. 20 rounds prior to jamming; left stbd 50 & 30 as mn batteries. as i recall from recount of radar types afterward, the cutter missed with every round fired but did manage to scare cutter into self destructing by blowing stern off, allowing for salvage after we went away. also seems to me that udt salvage divers attached air bags to the trawler and floated her for salvage. I may be wrong about that as i was by then back in the "hole" most of the time. remember CS1 Sparrow? he left during or prior to the cruise and was sorely missed for quite a while.LCDR Schlegelmilch was CO later relieved by LCDR Stauffer. LT Woodard was XO my entire tour as i recall. ENS Mallett(sp) was Chief Engineer replaced in Hong Kong by Ens Duffy. Danny Leyva was En1/LPO of after engineroom. I remember John Whitmarsh, Lawson, Joe Foley EN1? Pricket from forward engineroom. i can see the faces of several more in my mind but cannot seem to put names to them. ahh 1 just came to me . FN reisig(sp)?. I made him clean up some barf because he always was sea sick first hours out and I mistakenly thought it was his. Guy who did it was eventually found out and reisig apologized to but most likely was not received very appreciatively. Man can a guy get windy or what. I currently own and operate an06 peterbilt and flatbed trailer traveling nationwide. will check back as often as possible. |

| Comments: | First of all, great website. Neat to see the pictures and the history of the ENDURANCE.
You probably are not aware that the mine force has implemented a rotational crew concept again. This time instead of utilizing detachments, each crew has adopted a former MSO name. Our crew, officially called MHC CREW KILO, has selected ENDURANCE, and will soon be officially referred to as CREW ENDURANCE. We are currently embarked on USS HERON (MHC 52) in Ingleside, Texas. Since we just rotated to the HERON hull, we are trying to gather some photos or memorabilia to redecorate the mess decks. The Navy Historical Archives has only four photos of MSO-435. However, what was so neat about your site was the photos of the sailors, as that is what makes a ship come to life. We would like to capture that history and comraderie for our crew. In closing, I would like to ask if these photos were available to be scanned at a much higher resolution to allow printing and framing for display on the messdecks. Additionally, I would like to offer any assistance to you and your organization that may support your desire to document and chronicle the contributions and fun times that the mine forces have enjoyed. Very respectfully, LCDR Blaine Parkerson Executive Officer |
