Today was the last day of term 3 at school, and your friends would have had their farewell assembly as school is finished for them and they go off to prepare for the HSC exams. Unfortunately, neither you nor I made it to the assembly physically. Maybe you dropped in to see Andrew and Kevin and Johnny and the others. I had had grand plans to help them with their HSC year, but it didn't turn out as I had hoped at all. I'm sure that you are telling me something about the future and what I should be doing with myself in the few years I have left before I am too old to do anything. I am a slow pupil and you have had to take me by the scruff of the neck in order to get me to change. Sometimes I still pine for my old life, and on days like today I feel like I am missing out on things. Just the same, it is much more important to be with you, and I can still do that. I always hated the end of term anyway, because there were always so many things that I had meant to do that I hadn't, and the holidays were never long enough to catch up. stayed here with us you would be 18 today. I bet you would have been very tall, brilliant, beautiful, intelligent and artisitic. As I wrote in a poem last year, you were all these things when you were 12 anyway, before you died. You transcended us. I am so proud to have been your father and so lucky to have known you for the time you stayed. I wish that you could have stayed longer but I know that you had to go. You knew that and so you concentrated on making us comfortable on that last night in St Vincents Hospital. I am so grateful to you. We had a wonderful relationship that was complete. Now our relationship is better, more natural, less bound by the conventions of father and son. We are together all the time and I know that you guide and support me as I try to make my way into the future. I have some time to spend here yet and you are determined that I make that time worthwhile. Thanks for everything. Love you forever. |

| Comments: | My precious, precious Julian, how can it be that we are
wishing you yet another Happy Birthday but physically you are not to be seen. It is so hard for us to get through this day. You would be 18. A young man by legal definition, able to vote, finishing your final year of high school, readying yourself to take on the outside world next year. You would probably have your driver's license, be busy with your many friends and having all the special moments that should have come your way. Did you hear your Father and I sing you Happy Birthday and see us blowing out the candles for you? Did you see the cards I made for you and left at the cemetery along with the flowers too? Dad carefully hung the butterfly windchime and blue metal butterfly in the tree beside your plaque. Your Auntie Chris surprised us at the cemetery and brought flowers for you too. Speaking to Calista on the phone about you and talking about how we celebrated your 18th special day manifests the overwhelming sadness of our lives now. Oh what we would all give to have you here to plant birthday kisses and hugs onto your big man's body. We love you so very, very, very much. We will always be proud of the special person you are and grateful for the wonder of the twelve years we shared together with you in this lifetime.
