I've had German and Latin as secondary languages, so I can recognize some of the phrases, though the combination of French and Dutch throws me for a loop.

Ek woon nou vir agt maande hier en is op die uitkyk vir enige afrikaans sprekende mense in my omgewing. Ek besef u blad is nie daarop ingestel om mense op so 'n manier te laat ontmoet nie. I could speak it fluently as a child, my mother's first language, however over 30 years of not using it much (my mother died and we moved to another country) means that I would like to brush up on it so that I am not embarrassed about asking questions in Genforum about my oupa-grootjie or ouma-grootjie. As noted there is not much on the internet for Afrikaans. You are right in that we would need to look at books, as even the English-Afrikaans dictionary on the internet is limited, does not even list orphanage. Sourcing these books could be another problem so the net has made it easier to get hold of information even if ultimately one has to go to books. Thanks for the site as I am finding it very helpful.

Drug-taking, screwing around and drunkenly partying are prerequisites for promotions and awards at Fircrest. Anyone not able to adhere to this mandatory low standard of performance did not have a good experience working there and got shafted or moved of their own accord. My arguments are documented, an example of witnesses you can question and records you can retrieve being WA State DASA per investigator Henry Govaert and WA State Office of Special Investigations under David Cassidy. I know he hoped to goad me into doing the paperwork so that he could as usual follow the path of least resistance, which he learned from his forefathers and their heirs around him. I daresay the lady wants to get the matrimonial gaff hook into him. Six years is a long time to be trying to reel in her fish. When my driver’s license expired in December, I had to wait on getting money at the end of January from my daughter to renew it. She was also making a plan to get me new eyeglasses as I could not renew my license without glasses and I had been without any for a year. When my tabs had come up for renewing, I needed work on the car first to make it roadworthy, but because, despite having applied for several jobs, and getting a terrible run-around while trying to get re-employed by the state, I still had no job. My only source of income is a disability stipend of $727. I do not know how to beg and so I have suffered in silence. On the day I was stopped, I was lonely and rather than take three bus rides to get from Aurora Avenue and 145th to Lake City Way and 145th were my son lives, I decided to take a chance and drive. My daughter had given me the money for my license on the prior Friday, but when I realized I would have to get glasses first, I marked Tuesday, (the Monday being Martin Luther King day) as the day to do all my car stuff. While innocently looking for a little joy, I who have not infractions and am a careful and aware driver, was pulled over by Ms. Sullivan when there was barely anyone around, who was put in the position of being a predator who prays on the frail and the gentle. I have post traumatic stress disorder from growing up under the police brutality of South Africa and when I have seen it manifest here in America too, it has made me very afraid of these people who dress up as police and then act out some very pathological roles. I have had to work very hard to keep the blues away, and the fear, and the embarrassment and the feelings of abject humiliation here in the city, where merit is spit upon, doers of good are victimized and the liars and con-artists are ruling the roost and contaminating everything they touch. I wish I had rather traveled in the high occupancy lane with a dummy and caused and accident necessitating several people being transported to hospital. My fine would only have been $110 and a possible extra $80 penalty for something or other else. The news reporter said we should be thankful that no one was seriously injured. I suffered depression over the violations of my human rights for so many years and finally, after a psychotic break, I was completely and totally annihilated and had to be rescued from inflicting a death wound on myself, that I would no longer weep at the indignities heaped upon me. I thought too, of killing my children, so that they wouldn’t have to feel the pain of the carelessness we live with as our way of life. Please, have mercy. I haven’t the money to pay for my blood pressure medication and with readings like 220/140, I may well die or have a stroke any time. Given that I work with many people in the mining industry, and the mine companies are populated with Afrikaans speakers, I began learning Afrikaans in 2000. I get little practice when I am at home in Colorado, USA, so I must renew my efforts when I visit SA. I learned a bit of Sutu and Tswana in 2000, but with little use, I have forgotten it all. I do want to come to SA with a knowledge of at least one of the 11 official languages and Afrikaans is the one. I also feel strongly that efforts such as yours should continue to maintain Afrikaans as a viable language. Beste Groete, Ron

These are decisions which can only be made by those personally involved, those to whom this thing is actually happening. Mind your own business. This is their business. Devote yourself if you really care, to making this a more hospitable world into which we can bring our babies without fear. March if you must, but march for those already born, who may be doomed to a miserable three score and ten years of unjustifiable hardship. A lifetime plagued with the uncertainty inherent to being an incidental misconception does not make sense to me. If I imposed such a blighted existence upon anyone to be born, I would be committing a vile crime against humanity. A STORY This child was born on December 20, 1950 in the Republic of South Africa. Poverty and the ensuing diseased social, familial and marital relationships contributed to the death at only thirty seven years of the mother of four girls aged thirteen, eleven, nine and three, and the long for son, aged 3 months. The father, a hard-drinking, under-educated man, who worked as a laborer two miles underground in the goldfields of Johannesburg, thrashed his wife when he was drunk, if she so much as contradicted him, and he threw in punches and kicks for good measure. One of the blows alone, or several, might have caused damage in utero and the long awaited son was handicapped in ways that could never be repaired. The four daughters would slice would pound small slices of beef with a brick to render it into a chewy meat strip similar to jerky. It was called like biltong which is made by spicing and hanging strips of meat to dry. It was their mother's favorite taste treat and they, not having money, tried to approximate it to take to her in the hospital following their baby brother's birth. She died within months. The older girls were place singly in adoptive homes. The youngest girl and the boy were placed, after almost a year of being in various places of foster-care, into an adoptive home where due to influence and heavy case-loads, all but the most cursory screening of the prospective parents was likely performed. She heard no more about her living father. From the very beginning the adoptive father began to use the girl’s body to satisfy his sexual stirrings. At first he told he she would become his blood child if she let him touch her private parts ten times. He said she would no longer be an adopted child, which in itself seemed to carry some sore of stigma. It did not end there, however. For the next fourteen years his powers of persuasion ranged from threatening to tell what a bad little girl she was if she told anyone, to holding the knife at her throat while lying on top of her huffing and puffing as he sought his sexual release to pretending he had swallowed enough pills to kill himself because she resisted him. The knife part happened during the summer seaside vacation at the of her first year in school. He had taken her fishing with him to a secluded, isolated stretch of beach bordered by brush and trees. There was no-one to hear her cries and pleadings. The girl endured, believing she would be damned to that place called hell if she did not honor her father and mother and these people were now called her father and mother. She was a model pupil in school; not too bright, but she always did her homework and obeyed the authority figures and tried harder than the children who were not adopted and those who did not have a terrible secret. On the other hand, the girl had been told by the mother to save herself for the man she married. The mother had apparently done so (but not the mother’s mother, as her marriage certificate attested to the marriage being a scant five months before her birth, although this was never acknowledged). The girl never understood this concept so well because whatever it was the mother had saved, she didn’t give to her husband and she bragged that after twenty years of marriage her husband had never seen her naked. The girl was very strictly controlled by her step-mother (mom) and her step-mother’s mother (granny) with whom she shared a room. The father controlled her also, but in a different way to her mother and grandmother. There was inappropriate sexual contact taking place between granny and her step-father (Dad). Many a time she would hear her dad sneak into the room and she would hear the “sssh…ings” and when the moon was full be able to see their outlines. Now, everyone knew there was something called “it” but no-one talked about “it” or knew very much about “it” except what they saw in the fields and farmyards, and anyway, “it” was only for the gratification of men and good women didn’t want or enjoy “it”, only sluts and whores did. The girl was allowed after her sixteenth birthday to go to a party with a nineteen year old youth who subsequently came to sit and talk with her in her parent’s living room or in the garden, and they began to dream of how they would furnish a home when he had completed his apprenticeship and she had her certificate to teach the handicapped. She knew some of their needs because she could see what her younger brother needed and more than both parents, was able to show him because she had a gift of patience and a tender heart. She would bind up the broken legs of little birds with tiny splints and nurse back to health where possible any living things she found that were hurt. The parents thought of the young man as a “drip” which means something like “nerd”. The challenged the daughter – both of them – to look for a “real man”. Shortly thereafter, a “real man” stalked the daughter one Sunday morning while she walked her dog around the park opposite her home. He cruised around the perimeter of the park where she walked, in his American car – in that country people were very impressed with American things. He struck up conversation with this naïf, giving a false name and saying he was twenty five years old rather than thirty which he really was. She invited him to meet her parents and they thought she had learned some sense. The father was jealous but the mother stood firm and insisted the girl be allowed to go to a movie with the “real man”. The mother now knew about the father’s behavior as the girl had run away to talk to her church’s minister and the mother had been forced to commit him to a mental institution for observation. The girl was happy and excited about going out on her first real date. A “real man” wanted to take her out – she was acceptable, she wasn’t too ugly, too stupid, too anything, she had a date. She was sixteen years old. She thought her life was just beginning. The “real man” arrived late to fetch her and after they drove from the girl’s house, he declined to go to see a movie and he drove her around and they talked. At last he drove to a hill a few miles out of town. It’s steepness necessitated a narrow by-pass being built alongside the main road for emergency vehicles. This by-pass also served as a scenic look-out and the girl was later to hear, a lover’s lane. They sat in the car awhile looking at the farmhouse lights dotted around the valley below. The air was warn and dry that night. She remembers him kissing and it was nice being kissed in an adult way by a handsome boyfriend. He asked her if she was a virgin. She did not what to say. She thought she was because he was the first man (other than the father) who had touched her breasts. Because of what her parent figure had done to her however, she didn’t think it would be truthful to say yes. She remembers how quickly he unzipped his fly, lean across her on the single seat of his American car, pulled aside her panty leg elastic and thrust himself into her. She also remembers how her cheeks burned as he drove her home. She didn’t hear from him again until she realized what the absence of her period meant and she called him. She knew, because she had been told over and over, that only whores and sluts got pregnant out of wedlock and that if it ever happened to her she would be thrown out of the house. She had always been told while growing up that if she didn’t behave she would be sent back to the orphanage. She was so afraid. She didn’t tell anyone, besides there was no-one to tell. The “real man” called her back and a few days later she sneaked out to meet him. He drove her to the big city nearby and took her to an apartment where a catheter was inserted into her uterus. She went home bleeding and lonelier than she had ever been in her life. A couple of days later, he again took her to the apartment where a D & C was performed without an anesthetic. She was allowed to sleep there and he returned her home the next day. She lied about where she had been and nothing would make her confess. She took her hiding and the scolding from both her parent figures in silence. The “real man’s” last words as he let her out of his car a block away from her house, lest anyone see him, were ‘I won’t say sorry, this whole thing has been a very sorry business’. These words lay with a crushing heaviness on her heart and when remembering them twenty years later, the girl, now almost middle aged, weeps. Her mouth opens in a scream, but she must scream silently. Her husband reads in the room next door, her two beloved children play in the living room. She must not alarm them with her grief.
