| Comments: | My father was charged with drugs 14 years ago and is still in the tucker unit in arkansas.
He is now facing life threating medical conditions and is only given medication. He has had these conditions for years and has never been given a diagnosis of what is really wrong with him. For the past several months he continues to go to the dr and they give him medication. I have been searching the websites for help. I came across your website and will continue to post information to help others when i find the answers to mine. |

| Comments: | I am from Mass. and my best friend moved to Florida about 4 years ago. He was put in prison and murdered. I believe that it was by other inmates who were in for life, but I cant seem to find the story from Newspapers, or the real story from the prison. His name is Alonzo J. Despres. If anyone can find any info, an e-mail would be very much appreciated. Keep up the work, someone needs to stand up for them. |

| Comments: | I lost the love of my life on 03/02/2006 and I believe in my heart and by the evidence that the prison gave me that Eric was just another cdc number and one less inmate to deal with.yeah the co's didn't put them in jail but they don't need to pass jugdement either. That should be left up to God.just because they hold a bagde don't make them any better.Someone tell me how do drugs get into the prison?Cause I have been threw the procedure before a visit and I can see how the heck contraband still finds it's way in. thanks for this web site.I love u Eric and always will. |

| Comments: | hi,my name is angela and on march 2,2006 my husband was murdered at california mens colony prison in san luis obispo. The morning I recieved this devastating news I was told one story and then heard five different stories after that. Also when a love one dieds in jail and the famiy does not have the funds to claim the body the state does only one thing if they have to pay for it.They cremate the inmate and mail their ashes home vai us mail in a brown box .The story the was given to me was that he attacked another inmate but no one knows why and that the other inmate was just trying to defend himself.Ok let me to you this,my husband didn't go to prison for praying on his knees but he was not a bad person.we were together for 11yrs and have a 3yr old son.he was alwasy good to my kids and he was a good son and a good brother. He made some bad choices and thats what landed in jail.My mother-inlaw died febuary 6,2005 and two weeks after we buried her eric went to jail for controlled substance with intent to sell.He also had two strikes and still he did't deserve to died behind bars.my husband also suffered from siezures and was beaten on by sheriff deputies at la county jail several times.their excuse was they didn't know he had that condition and they thought he was being combative. When ever eric came out of a siezure he was very disoriented. I even went as far as to request from the court an order to have him put in the medical ward of the prison and thats where they beat him half to death.they would't even let me see him.so I sent a lawyer to make sure he was alive and she found him in a cell butt naked with no clothes,no mattress,no blanket just all beat up.That was back in june 18 2005.soon after that when he was well enough to go on the chain he was sent to tahachepi, in november he was sent to cmc.He was only there for 5 months and then just like that my soulmate is gone.I have to live with the excuse they gave me that doesn't even make any since. The guy that killed him didn't get any time added to his sentence. The D.A. said it was self defence.I could except that if it wasn't for that fact that he wasn't stabbed or shot or beat to death, get this the other guy sat on him and he went into respatory arrest due to tramatic exiffiation cause by external chest pressure. The one of many questions I have is where were the co's.My husband had enough time to attack this man, and the man had enough time to sit on my husband and choke him to death and no one got there in time to at least stop the the fight or at least save eric.I can't even see the report. When i asked why, Lt.thomas said it's not public information. Not even involentary man slaugther since they said the other guy was defending himself.I would have expected the same thing if Eric would have killed the other man.My main question is what do the guards get paid to do if not control and protect inmates from hurting themselves or other inmates? So bascially you could get away with murder in jail.I want justice.please if you have any advice for me i would truely be thankful. |

| Comments: | you are doing the right thing by exposing these things. Although my beliefe is that some people DO belong in prison, the majority are incarcerated for little or no reason.
The point is, if the government is going to lock some one down, they have the responsiblity for thier welfare. I know what I know by experience, law enforcement. About half of the people staffing the prisons are not qualified to be in a position of power. most of the inmates will be released back into society, we should take care on how we treat them. Common sense, you treat inmates as they treat you, respect must be met with respect. And ,if an inmate is violent, then that inmate must be dealt with with violence. If an inmate is basically following the rules, then that inmate should be treated with a certain amount of respect. And at all times, all inmates should be given adequate medical care AND pain medicine if needed. |

| Comments: | Henry Reuter was my Uncle. And I disagree he was prone to violence. He was a large man but very soft spoken and caring. He became intangled into the prison system at a very young age. It become the only way of life he knew. When he would get released he would stage a armed robbery
and just sit on the curb and wait for them to come get him so he could go home to prison. Its sad that in the end the prison turned on him and destoyed what was left of this humble kind man. My Aunt Jakie Kern (who recently passed away sadly) said he gave a guy a carton of smokes to light him. My best friend Mark Duncan is now in prison. He got rail-roaded for 70 years. I got to pay large phone bills when he calls to give him some comfert. He talks about how every new warden wants to make a name for the themselves and comes down on them hard for now reason other than their political gain. I pray he doesnt die in there, if he ever got out he would be a model citizen. He sure learned a harsh lesson the last 8 years and continues to pay. Why dont they let these guys join the military. It would be better to die for his country than rot in a cell. I miss him and Henry dearly. |

| Comments: | Hello again Iam an ex-con.I have been out now for two and a half years.I can STILL vivedly remember the deploable condtions at CRC in Norco,Ca.The women`s facility was created out of an old naval hospital. It was never built to house 900 female felons. The water is brown, the paint is peeling from the walls, shower walls eaten with mold...I could go on and on.I wouldn`t let a stray animal live like that.We are human beings being treated less than animals.God bless all inmates, which in fact are gods creatures also. |

| Comments: | Keep up the good work! Its been just recently that Ive been going online to seek, umm comfort I guess you can call it. I havent lost a loved one to the prison system & I pray to God I DONT, but my brother was recently sentenced to 15 years in state prison & it has been difficult to accept this reality. All I can do is continue praying that he will be home again someday & meanwhile I continue here, browsing here & there just to read about others experiences when dealing with something similar. It really great to see that I/we are not alone. Again continue with this & may God bless all who are dealing with having a loved one behind bars! |

| Comments: | My husband just went into Prison on October 7, 2005. He is in there on drug charges. He is not a bad person, he was not selling drugs or involving his kids, for that matter he was not even involving me. He had a drug habit and he strictly done his drugs for his own personal habit. I have spent the last week crying and searching for information on Arkansas Prisons. So far all the information I have found has been horrible. I would like to know how the Warden or the Govenor or the Guards would feel if it was their daughters or sons who were infected by Prisoner Plasma or had sex with a man who was raped in Prison and contracted HIV from that.I would like to know how much longer these people have to suffer before somebody realizes the SYSTEM SUCKS! |

| Comments: | Since Feb. 14, 2005. I'm a African Black woman who graduated from UCLA. I never cross this path in my life, until my close friend was arrested for drug traffic. When I go on visits to see her, she inform me of things that are going on in there. Why am I so intersting in this. Because after my friend arrest, I start thinking of family and friends who are going through this. Especially, when you can't see and talk to them everyday. Especially, when you want to pick the phone up or go and see them unconditionally, but you can't. Especially, when you can't call the prison and check on them in the mornings, afternoons, and nights. Especially, when they are sick and you don't know if there are ok or who is helping to take care of them. These people I realize are us, human being, who have made bad decisions and mistakes, but need help and understanding. Like what any human being wants. "Forgiveness" is what people need to reflect on. "Help" is what people need to advoid the same mistake that might confront them in there future/release life. If they survive, survive the place that is there to serve there mistakes not kill & torment them. May god be with family & frinds of the imprison. Until my friend comes home safe, who have hypertension real bad, and needs her medication to control her pressure. I worry for my friend and everyone who is suffering in the prison system.
Prison is a place set for mistakes & crimes commit, but is prison our everyday "hell". Prison is not so different than the crimes that are being committed. You commit a crimes against society , but the crime is bein commit back on you in orison. Where is the boundaries, and who set these boundaries. The boundaries set by guards, wardens, suppposed to be health care stafff. As a citizen of US, where does it count? voices, cys, votes... Who will help people in prison, my answer would be the people(us, human being)? a good question. Please answer that for people like (Pamella Coffey,Eva Vallario, and others). Who was listening to there cries before there deaths. The system has answer for cover ups, but not for people who need help. I conclude this. I hope that this will be posted and I hope to get back some answers.... |

| Comments: | My only comment is that had he been a man and accepted his responsibilities as a man and a father he would not have ended up in jail. The mother's comments that "the divorce" caused his alcoholism was the most blatant type of enabling that I have ever heard. It was his responsibility to take care of his problems and to take care of his children. His irresponsibility caused him to not see his children and it also put him in jail. What happened to him in jail was wrong, but he was an active participant in his own demise. As sad as it is his son is better off without him. Often no role model is better than a poor one. Now at least he has the opportunity to emulate another strong male role model -- perhaps an uncle, friend, etc. My son is in the same situation and in 30 days his father will have an arrest warrant out for him. He is choosing his own fate. |

| Comments: | My brother would have died anyway, it was too late to save him. But if the jail has asessed him when they got him in on 1/1/05, he would have been taken to the hospital then, and could have been spared a week of suffering instead of lying in jail dying with no one who cared. He was finaly taken on 1/7/05 around 8:pm and died about 3:30 am. Only about 6 hours later. They didn't call my mother untill after 12:midnight on the 7th to tell her to get the family there EARLY in the morning. I went at 1:am and was not allowed to see him. That I had to wait untill 8:30 am the next day to go get permission to visit him. I asked his doctor to tell him that I love him and would be there for him for whatever he wants or needs. I waited till about 3:am and told his doctor that I needed to go check on our mother (who is 74 and dying of small cell cancer), then I'd be back. His doctor told me he told my brother what I said and said my brother said "I'll see you later". Less than 15 minutes later while sitting with my mother, she got the call telling her that her first born was dead. I am going to do everything GOD will use me to do to make a change. I will not stop untill I'm in heaven with my Lord. We have to bring this to the entire public! Most people do not have any idea how our own prisioners in America are being treated by those we hired to "protect and serve". Americans are apalled and horrified when someone in another country tortures, neglects, and even kills any American prisioneres there. How much more horrified would they be if they knew the truth about how American prisioners at home are treated! Anyone who has any suggestions or information that might help me make this happen NOW, please call or email me. My only solace is that my brother was saved by GRACE and is in Heaven with no more pain, sorrow, tears, and is free at last! May GOD watch over and keep you and all your loved ones always, Donna |

| Comments: | As a long time officer of the ADC; I commend your efforts to shed light on such a "dark and evil" place. Please continue to be the voice of those who cannot speak, the eyes of those who cannot see, the ears of those who cannot hear. I admit that the Arkansas Depaertment of Correction is not a perfect utopia of institutionalized heaven that free-world citizens falsely percieve that it should be. As a matter of fact it does have its fair share of historical "dark and evil deeds" in its 100 plus year history. However, I have personally witnessed a slow gradual improvement since 1987 when I first became a"blue-suit". So in conclusion, the wheels of justice are slow at times, so be patient things will get better for those souls incarcerated in those brick and morter palaces sitting out in those desolate fields! It is because of this great and free nation that individuals can post thier views and opinions on a web site such as this that can set the "spark " to set a great "fire" of compassion for thier fellow human beings to make this world a more humane and dignified place for generations to come! Thanks, Thomas Ratledge-- |

| Comments: | I am glad that some one is speaking out for the prisoners.
I have a son that is in Corcoran Substance Abuse Center. He has now been in a wheel chair for over 1 1/2yrs. due to an accident that happened at Donovan Prison in San Diego after he had me report a wrongful death to Internal Affairs and an investigation had been opened. He has been diagnosed with Myoclonus (muscle spasms) that has made it so that he is unable to stand or walk on his own. He developed this after his accident (after the investigation was opened), he was sent with a chrono for a lower bunk becuase of dissyness, which the guards denined; he then suffered a head injury after falling off the top bunk and ended up in a wheel chair. I had gotten calls from other inmates telling me he needed medical attention. I finally got through to a Lt. that was more interested in who had called me and who kept telling me he was unaware of him needing medical attention. He finally said he would check on him after I told him that he now knows that he needs medical attention. Then he gave me the story that my son was refusing medical attention after I had received more phone calls from others telling me he still had not gotten to see any one. I can not get any answers from the prisons (I gave up when he was in Donovan and have little faith that Corcoran is any better). Corcoran had denied our first visit saying that he did not get a visit because he had not put in for the time off on a job that he was assigned to but not able to do because of being in a wheel chair, so even though he was not at work he could not get the first visit that was possible from his family in over 5yrs. Is this not cruel and unusual punishment? Very little has been done for him medically. Some of the doctors have recommended some things (like crutches) but nothing has been done for him he has not received any crutches. He is in pain. The longer he spends in the wheel chair the less likely it will be that he will ever be able to walk again. They have not taken any of the steps that were prescribed to get him out of the wheel chair since he has been in Corcoran. One of the medications that he was on when he arrived at Corcoran that he was supposed to have been taken off of slowly as one of the possible side effects for suddenly stopping this medication was death was stopped abruptly upon arriving at Corcoran. He said it was the worst time in his life. The pain from coming off the medication was tremendous and he was made to just lay on his bunk and bare it. He is still in pain and nothing has been done. I feel very hopeless. I hope that he can someday be free again. I feel that they are slowly murdering my son and placing a larger burden on his family. CDC in Sacramento lied to me when they said that he would be able to get the medical attention he needed at Corcoran and that the Substance Abuse Center at Corcoran was not the same as Corcoran Prison -- it is in fact no better (if not worse) than any of the other 3 facillities he has been in. Thank you for your website. More people need to know about the torture that goes on in the THIRD largest population in California. This prison system needs to change. |

| Comments: | I realize I do not know how often you update, but I am from Indiana and there has been quite a stir here about the facility in New Castle. This year (2004) there was a questionable death in that facility, and also in the county jail. Both from medical neglect within those facilities. I find your site interesting. Being an interested party in the DOC system, I constantly am seeking information for a family member to be given reasonable medical care. And meet with resistance wherever I go. God Bless the medical condition is not life threatening at this time, but could turn that way. Keep up the work of keeping us informed. |

| Comments: | Linda,
It's been a while since I've emailed you. Probably over a year, but I did want you to know that Chester Johnston, my husband, died in Mississippi prison from Hepatitis C and liver cancer. I tried so hard to have him released on a medical release but as if they had to do one last bad deed the medical release allowed no one with a sex crime to be released. Chester had flat timed that sentence but was still having to have that counted against him. I envy you the time you got to spend with your brother when he was dying. Chester and I were separated from one another by having a RVR given for accepting money from another inmates family which had occurred 6 months before. The last time I saw Chester was in the visitation room on June 26th. Chester was sent to Parchman hospital on July 16 and died there on July 20th. I had begged the commissioner to let us say our goodbyes but they waited until the day he died to call me and his family and then an hour later he died before we could even get plans made. Something has to be done about the state of Mississippi. I know you have your plate full right now, but I wish you could put a Mississippi death page on your website because there are many who die here from neglect. I was so overcome with grief at first that I simply wanted to walk away from the whole blooming mess but I can't do that to Chester's memory and if I don't do anything else, I want to see some changes made for others.
