Comments:I have been ill for a few of years now, about 9 months ago I was told I have limited scleroderma, fibromyalia, chronic fatigue syndrome, raynauds. I grow more tired as time goes on and the pain seems to increase. I cry a lot because I feel so alone. I have a wonderful husband, and great kids but still feel alone. I feel sometimes like the doctors have no idea. I am 42 years old. My life has changed dramatically I can no longer enjoy the things that I did before. But I am still grateful always for my husband and children and most of all for Jesus. Even if I feel alone they never leave me. I pray for Gods help for all suffering with this disease.

Comments: I must say, after reading "Losing Face.....I was a little beside myself with anxiety. I, too, have Scleroderma, and as you have indicated...it can be a very dibilitating disease (so-to-speak). I have good days and bad ones. also. but after reading your words... I realize we both have a verey important factor to the disease, in common...."the Love and Trust and Belief in our Higher Power...watching over us...and an Awesome Lord He is." I. too .trust I will have an undying courage to face whatever is neaxt, but as you staed...noone with this condition knows from one day to the next. just what that might entail. I have felt. for weels now, the many changes occuring withion, and as you said, noone can see that...but we as victums...feel and know it is happenning. I know what you mean ...when you say...[people, family, friemds will question you, as though you're making it all up for attention. It is sad, indeed, and I would trsde it all some(moet) days, just for s little relief. I speak to God, almost 24/7...for iI know this is not within my control. I dare not ask "why", but I feel I have led a good Chriiatian life, and cannot help but wonder about the reasoning to all of this. But..I guess it matters not who one is or what their backgrounds are...this disease, as you said, can/will stike when and whom it wishes. I ask that I stay in your prayers, as you will be in mine, and May God continue to Bless you and yours, today, tomorrow, and forevermore.

Yours truly,
In Christs' Service,

Thanks to a transplant doctor, I found a stem cell transplant which stopped the progression of my disease, my skin involvement is returning to normal, my fatigue is gone (!) and my lung involvement is getting better. Praise God! I want to tell everyone about this alternative. If you are interested you can contact me, or check my website. It is an alternative with a zero per cent mortality rate. It is still in clinical trials. A stem cell transplant might not be for everyone, but you will never know if you don't check it out. I only want to educate and bring hope. Be well, and live each day for its beauty. Best, Jane

Comments:April,
I understand your story all too well. My Mom was diagnosed with Scleroderma in 1979 after living with the symptoms for 3 yrs. prior to that. 3 weeks ago, 11/09/05, Mom passed away in her sleep, tired, worn out, but courageous. She never let the disease slow her down and lived an amazing life of reaching out to others in need. Now she resides in the ultimate pain-free realm of God which we call Heaven, and I am left behind to deal with the pain of her departure...Scleroderma may have effected her appearance, but it never effected her spirit and detemination to be a blessing to others. April, I pray that you, too, will know the fellowship of Christ and that your life may be a shining light to all who see it!

I cannot but know how ignorant I am about so many things. All I can do is pray for the many things about which I know nothing. Is ignorance a form of blindness? I can only keep searching and hope there are those with wonderful hearts and minds, like yours, who are willing to share and educate. We all need to show one another more compassion.

Comments:Hello,
I do not "have" anything ,( was told might be CFS or fibro, it was probably from the CO from the heater) but 7 yrs ago when doing research to rid of pain and exhaustion.....
Had gotten found a web site on ADD and Fibromyalgia and MVP.
Pat who has the web site had all these and found the ADD medication helped then her dealing with NUTRITION mostly.
I have noticed the similarity between so many illnesses.
They seemed to be like allergies.
So when I stopped milk, my IBS just about dissapeared. sOME FOODS might NOT be a food for you.
Tried ridding wheat 6mths later and shoulder pain and weakness went away and stopped feeling so anxios. Just in case this might be helpful am writing it. Currently going thru lots of stress and the headaches and what feels like toxins under skin are partially back ( Just thought I had whipped it. ).

I made this site to be pleasing to the eyes and also nice to look at and learn from and I carefuly chose each image I used to achieve this goal. I do hope ya'll have found this to be different from the sterile types of sites that tell what scleroderma is, I wanted this to be something much different than what you all have seen when researching scleroderma like I did myself.

Thanks again and love and hugs to all,

April

I'm not sure why...but I know that nothing is a coincidence in life--so there is a reason I am signing your guestbook; I just don't know it yet. I find your strength amazing. I have IBS so I can relate to that portion of your disease. Have you tried biofeedback training? It helped me, but stress is stress and when under stress nothing helps; I stopped meds, they only gave me side effects and did nothing for the IBS. I also have arrythmias, not as severe as yours. I will keep you in prayer always.

Comments:Hi there,

My friend found this site and sent me the link and it was nice to browse through it. I'm 16 years old and was diagnosed with Linear Scleroderma when i was 8 and a half. It is on my face so over the years has caused a lot of deformation and such..

I will admit it caused me severe depression for the better part of my life so far and has been difficult to deal with but I'm getting much better. I feel great about myself most of the time and have the ability to brush off rude comments or stares I so often receive.

Thank you for making this website, I'm sure it will help many people as well as spread awareness about Scleroderma.

Sincerely,
Sam*

I was touched by your story, even though it's not good to hear that someone is suffering, it's good to know that someone else understands exactly what you're going thru. I have some support but it's not the same. I also saw your pictures and you are beautiful and you have a beautiful family.I guess that's one thing that we don't have to worry about is the wrinkles, right! Take care, you'll be in my prayers.

i am just finding myself trying to be strong for everyone else in my life. this morning is the first time i have actually just really cried alot. i love your poems, and definitley relate to them for my fathers sake. i loved him dearly. and miss him so much. thank you so much for making this site for people like him and you and all the family and friends of scleroderma patients. my dad donated his body to a place in utah, that researches scleroderma. he wanted to help others.my mom is having the hardest time with this. my dad had one of the worst cases. you can tell by the picture on link that i have sent above. that pisture was taken like 2 days before he died. he kept seeing a cat jumping and playing around his nursing home room. he called him little guy. but could not tell us what little guy looked like. i will pray for you, because i know from what dad went through, this disease is horrible, and painful, it pretty much ate his insides. there is a medication you can take he said to slow the scleroderma down , but he was allergic to it. for the day mom and dad found out he had this. it was like 16 or 17 years when he finally passed.
i hope you are doing ok. i feel for all that have this .
sincerely, michelle

Today I have been checking out personal experiences, I appreciate you sharing, thank you. Any advice you have for ways we can "be there" for our friend and his family would be appreciated. Comments:My God! You have had it all.

I have had 3 catheter ablations. First one was for Atriel Flutter. It worked well.

But then, I started with Atriel Fib. Two Pulmonary Vain ablations did't help. Maybe a little bit.

Had a pacemaker installed 3 weeks ago and have not had an episode since! I also had bradycardia.

I am now using a beta-blocker, Metoprolol. But I also experience fatigue. I play tennis 2/week. Before the pacemaker I was doing very well even though I experienced an episode 2 to 3 times/month. Now, I don't have any episodes but plenty of fatigue.

I expect that I will either reduce the Metoprolol dosage or allow the pacemaker to set my heart rate during physical activity. Right now, my sinus node takes over when I excercise.

I am in Los Angeles. Dr. Nadanamee (in Inglewood, CA) performed the pulmomary vain ablations. I am convinced that he pads the statistics. I would think that 50/50 is about the correct success ratio.

Anyway, my heart goes out to you. Your spirits seem high. Keep it up.

I have only heard the word Scleroderma a few times, and really didn't know just what it meant or how it effects a person, but now I do.

You made everything so easy to understand, and by showing your pictures, it gives us some visability, but I do want to let you know that you are a beautiful person, inside from your writing and ourside from your pictures.

Thank you for sharing your story.

I have tried to live a normal life for years and it is so hard...My dads in the navy and has been gone for 3 and a half years in the war I have yet to see him 4 times for a few days at a time. Comments:Hi April,

I love your site and the music...all of the Quicktime player would not load...but that's ok, not your problem.
I truly loved reading your story, you are so wonderful and brave to reveal so much about yourself and I know there is very little that can be done about this disease but your courage is admirable and I hope for your sake you may get some resolve to all of your problems, or some research may find some help before it is too late for current victims.

I am still convinced I have Scleroderma, yet I saw the top(reputed specialist) here in Massachusetts Boston Hospital Dr. Joseph Korn and he did confirm I had Raynaud's Phenomena
but I had no other severe obvious outward presenting symptoms and he was very abrupt and rude and left the room with my husband and I trailing behind him, as he talked to us over his shoulder, us following like wounded little puppies.

I am currently 52 a Birthday coming up in December. I was told when I was 21 that I had esophagitis Dr. Link explained that the little flap door in my throat is defective and does not stay shut.

I was taking Mylanta II twice a day for about a year and managing my diet well and experienced about 10 years of fairly decent health.

In 1978 I was shoveling snow for our very large blizzard here in MA and shortly after that I started to have neck and shoulderblade pain on my right side, my husband and I thought it was from shoveling the snow and then driving a School Bus and leaning over to open and close the door made it worse so it took about 5 years to get that diagnosed as a pinched nerve.

I delt with that pain and have been ever since. I started to have lower back pain in 1991 and I thought that was from exercise so I stopped touching my toes 100 times a day and had some minor relief and then it came back. I had MRI's finally in 1993 that revealed many slightly herniated discs. I continue to deal with that pain also, all of this damage seems to be collecting exclusively on my right side.

I have many, many other Neurological problems numbness and tingling in hands and feet extended abdomen after eating, dysmotility, I only get two hours sleep when I first lay down and then about 45 minutes a shot after that. I have not slept a full 8 hours sleep duration in about 6 years.

I am now going on three years next month (OCT) since the you know what really hit the you know what.

When I started to go through Menopause three years ago all the physicians said the Palpitations, Night Sweats and profuse Sweating were all due to that, well I am still here with all those problems 3 years later.

My right hand has so called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, how ever it does not look like the classic presentation instead my fingers are starting to overlap each other and my fingernails just tear off I never have to file them because they do not grow long enough and they have flakes and white lines and ridges, that I keep telling the physicians is because they do not get enough circulation at night when I lay down on my back they get numb, so I explained I tried laying on my sotmach and that was worse, so guess what? It is not my discs, it's this bunch of so called fat in my gut and I keep telling the physicians that it is not fat it is connective tissue disease.

I have been through all the required tests Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, Barium studies with follow through, blood work MRI's, CAT scans on and on and on and they still do not know what the Hay Hay my problem is.

Someday's I just do not know how I will make it through I am never comfortable or with out pain, when I sit her too long at the monitor I have to get up and move around several times because I hurt, I have seen Vascular Surgeons who say I am fine just because it does not effect my big arteries and veins does not mean that my microcirculatory system is not free of pain, I look at my nails and thin skin and get very disgusted.

Any way sorry to go on and on, at some point I will write again and give you more detailed information about all of the studies and symptoms and perhaps by then I will have encountered a physician who knows more then just his particular specialty or cares to do a little extra research on me instead of just bouncing me back and forth from one speicialist to another.

Thank you for reading,
Please take care or yourself as best as you can,
Good Luck and God Bless,
Sincerely,
Lydia

Thank god for them and I keep each of them informed of any changes and test results. Good luck to you. I too am a single Mom but fortunately, mine are 22 year old daughter and a 15 year old son. We just have to keep positive.

Comments:You have a great page. I see myself here. Diagnosed with systemic scleroderma in 1991. Been in denial since. In january of this year the raynods got worse. Sores on the fingers that won't heal. Had surgery on july 2 on the left hand. incisions the length of 4 fingers and through the palm of my hand to just below my wrist. The scleroderma is getting worse day by day. Had to start physical therapy for my left hand. the skin is tightening and i can barely move my fingers or wrist. Have to have similar surgery on aug 20 on the right hand.

haven't been able to work since may and the fatigue is worse, the joint pain is worse, and the newest symptom is absence seizeures. I lose time. Last sunday I lost about 3 hours. My family said I was very out of character and could not remember anything that had happened in the last week. Just had the one episode but now they won't let me drive until the EEG (Brain Function test) comes back. YUCK!! Sick, tired and now maybe CRAZY!!!LOL. You have to laugh it's better than crying. Thanks for the page it is wonderful.

You have taken a set of circumstances that could be compared to the desirability of a sow's ear and filtered them through your beautiful spirit and made a silk purse website!

Comments:Wow, April. You may find this hard to understand, but reading your story made me feel better about the fact that I have terminal breast cancer. I've beaten the predicted time given to me but there is no cure for it. But I do not have to face half the problems you do, even though I've been battling this since my first go-around in 1989. I know how hard it must be to write your story and to cope, but stay strong gal...there is always hope.

These kinds of sites are so meaningful. I believe when people share like you have, it is the greatest service one can offer another. I am greatly sorry that you are being affected by this disease. I pray that new research and treatment will give you your life back. And I will keep you close in prayer as you deal with this illness day to day. God bless you. ~Marvaline
