| Comments: | Thank you for your hard work;very informative site! Several generations of my family were born, raised and died in Howell, Oregon counties and in MoKo, Fulton Co., Arkansas. It has also left me with many fond memories growing up as my father would always return to his family farm in Lanton, Mo. Many hours were spent walking the wooded timbers, long country lanes telling me stories of our Forester, Bench and Vincent families. Currently, I have been researching my grt. gft. grandfather, Elijah Forester (1826-1925) and have not been able to locate his final resting place. Some of my family records state he was buried in Stateline cemetery in MoKo, Arkansas; others indicate he was buried at Clifton just ouside of Thayer. We have been to Stateline numerous times since many of my family ancestors are buried there;however, have not been able to locate his grave or that of his wife, Linny England (Ingland). They were married in 1848 in Alton, Mo. Linny died in about 1882, and Elijah remarried Paralle Blankenship in 1883. According to records found ealier this spring at Alton courthouse, they were divorced in 1915. Secondly, I am also in search of information regarding one of Elijah's sons, Claborn Jackson Forester, who died in Fulton Co., Arkansas in 1931. His life was without doubt very colorful to say the least and many stories have been passed down through the years. He as without a doubt a moonshiner--and not afraid to defend his family or his intoxicating hobby. He was sent to prison (Jefferson City, Mo.) for killing someone. A couple of version say the killing happened in Thayer. One version was that it was a "Revenuer" and the trial was in West Plains. I am not sure of the time period but I am not able to locate him on a 1900 or 1910 census. Some family are guessing it may have been as late as 1920-1925. I am sure there was some press time given to the case as apparently, 4-5 men were approached by the "Revenuer" -- one being Claborn and apparently, shooting took place and since there was no positive proof of whose bullet killed the man the judge sentenced all the men. Claborn was sentence 10 years but it is said he didn't serve the complete term. Any help anyone can give me regarding this two men would be greatly appreciated--and please feel welcome to contact me directly at the above e-mail regarding this or any inquiries you may have regarding the above mentioned families. God Bless! |

I have been trying to gather up some info on the fraternal history of Howell County and particularly West Plains. I would appreciate anything that is related to any organization, whether it is still viable or not. I know that in 1910 there were over twenty fraternal groups in West Plains. Groups like the Masons, Odd Fellows, Knight of Pythias, Knights Templar, Grand Army of the Republic, Woodmen of the World, Modern Woodmen of America, Rebekahs, Eastern Star, and others. Most everyone that is involved in geneaological research will eventually trace their ancestors to being involved in some group or another. |

I believe John Hunter's father was named William. I know they lived in the West Plains area early in the 1900's and until their deaths in the 1960s. Your "post queries" site isn't working. I am trying to find information about Doroty Chowning and his wife Ellen Carpenter. Doroty moved his family from Howell County to Snohomish County, Washington before 1894. Ellen evidentally died in Snohomish County, because in 1900, Doroty had a second wife, Iva, who he married in 1897. She was only 5 years older than Doroty's daughter Pearl. Thanks, Dorothy |

Smith lived in Wright County from about 1850 through 1861, moved to Laclede County sometime before 1870 and from there made his way to Fulton County Arkansas by 1880. I dropped in to see if he left any traces in Howell County in his migrations. Also, my grandparents, Atha and Fye Smith, lived in West Plains for time during the 1930s and 40s, I believe.
