Liberal quantities of Stingers, 23mm anti-aircraft rifles and many other lethal munitions were sent and every day many Soviet soldiers died in Afghanistan. Today the USA wants Russia to cooperate with it in Afghanistan against a so- called threat which was conceived and created in the operation rooms of the CIA. What a joke with Russia! War and Politics are a game of chess. They have room for passion but at the highest level passion must not be allowed to overrule harsh geopolitical realities. The Russians under various generals conquered the vast mass of land that stretches from the Urals till Pacific and from the Caspian Sea till Oxus River. The region now known as CIS which includes Central Asian states was developed by various Russian governments with Russian taxpayers’ money. The region has the world’s largest oil and gasfields, many other valuable minerals and vast farm lands which can be turned into a granary of the earth. In the wake of the present crisis regardless of who has done it the aim of USA is not merely a war against terrorism as they proclaim shedding crocodiles tears but access to the riches and wealth of Central Asia. In 1980 the Americans poured billions in Pakistan to stop Russia from reaching the warm waters of Indian Ocean. Why should not Russia in 2001 stop USA from reaching the wealth of Central Asia via Afghanistan? Russia must re-assert itself. If not for anything else but in respect to the souls of the 14,000 Red Army men who died fighting in Afghanistan. I say Red Army men because it was an ideological army. Why should the Americans be allowed to fly with impunity all over the area that stretches from Chaman in Pakistan till Termez on the Oxus. Is Russia impotent? Is the country which sacrificed the most in lives to save Europe from Napoleon, Kaiser Willhelm Two and Hitler now so weak that it wants to have nothing to do with the machinations of a so-called superpower in its soft strategic underbelly? Regardless of the fact that the Taliban are terrorists or support terrorism Russia has a strategic duty to play a major part in the crisis. It must in alliance with China create a new Dual alliance which challenges U.S. arrogance of being the only super power on earth. If Afghanistan is to be cut quartered or destroyed Russia must have a share in the deal. Any solo strategic U.S. adventure in Afghanistan will be the beginning of U.S. colonization of Central Asia and US inroads inside Russian Siberia. The juggernaut will not stop on the Oxus. It will go till the Urals and even till Vladivostok! There are no innocent bystanders in geopolitics. Those who do not jump into the sea and do battle with the waves are condemned to eternal slavery. Great toil and sacrifices are required to achieve power in history. If the USSR was the champion of oppressed classes all over the world Russia must become the leader of Asia in tandem with China. It is necessary not only for Russia but for entire Asia. If Afghanistan is being turned into Poland then Russia must have a role. If Stingers were used to destroy Russian Gunships in 1986-88 the Russians must supply the Talibans with Russian SAMS. The balance of Brezhnev’s Afghan War must be redressed now. 14,000 USSR citizens died in Afghanistan simply because USA wanted to create trouble for USSR. Why should Russia behave like a naive spinster today and let the Americans have their way? This is not just a U.S. attack - it is a capitalist attack with France and UK in tow with USA. This is Russia’s last chance to lead Asia if not the world. Afghanistan is merely a pretext. The real aim is Central Asia and the destruction and destabilization of Asia and this will seriously affect Russia.
