 The Winter Evening Settles Down
With smell of steaks in passageways.
Six o'clock.
The burnt-out ends of smoky days.
And now a gusty shower wraps
The grimy scraps
Of withered leaves about your feet
And newspapers from vacant lots;
The showers beat
On broken blinds and chimney-pots,
And at the corner of the street
A lonely cab-horse steams and stamps.
And then the lighting of the lamps.

 I was born in the city of chicago and moved to the suburbs at 6 years old. Grew up in an extremely white collar town called Naperville. My experience with rap was the random crap you'd hear on the radio. I moved to Rosemont for a work opportunity and met a cool ass kid named John. First time I met John we were puttin some herbal in the air and he asked me,"Do you like hip hop?" "Haven't really heard any, and rap really doesnt interest me, can hardly understand them an when I can they're talking about money an shit" I replied, in response he put in a cd. The Artist: Blackalicious, The Album: NIA, The Song: Do this my way. For the next 4 minutes and 50 seconds I sat with my ear tilted toward the speaker sitting stock still while the joint burned unforgotten in my hand. My neck hairs stood at attention, from that point forward I couldn't get enough. Blackalicious (Love Gift of Gab an the Chief), got me started) turned into Lyric's Born, People Under the Stairs, Heiroglyphics, Lifesava's, K'naan, Saul Williams, Latyrx, Lateef, etc. I stumbled on this site because I was going to start doing my own spoken word poetry and was seeking further inspiration. My favorite song, in all music produced by mankind (an I like a large variety of music) is "Release" Ft. Gift of Gab/Saul Williams/Lyrics Born. If you have never heard this listen to the entire 7 minutes and some odd seconds, Saul Williams part in the middle moves me like no other piece of spoken poetry I've ever heard an LB does a SICK spit after Saul. Worth a listen. Love the site keep it up.
