| Other Comments: | I find it interesting that no one ever seems to mention Poppy's dream of Ash during her 'death' in Secret Vampire. He is wearing a MASK!!! He hides behind it! And: "I wear it for my health" meaning it keeps him safe in the Night World.(He also says "Bad magic happens". Does LJS tie this into the last paragraphs of her website installment of the story? Or is Ash just trying to set up Poppy to believe he's a bad boy?). And Rowan calls him on having a facade to hide behind in DoD. Which she can see is crumbling rather quickly.
Other aspects of Ash: his first scene with Quinn made me think that he was just enjoying the countryside and the stars and he deliberately kept Quinn waiting (of course, he liked to annoy Q.). And he also 'gallantly' walked Bunny Marten back to the store in DoD to (I think) 1. try to make Mary-Lynette jealous, but also, 2. to divert her attention AWAY from the sisters. In many ways he shows that he really loves his sisters, protecting them from the Night World, Quinn and their father. And, if you have read the continuation of Ash and M.-L. (I really hate that name!) on LJS website, Ash realizes M.-L. wants the sincere, true Ash, not the smart a--s. "He was slowly getting it that M.-L. wanted the real Ash, the Ash who could drop the MASK of sarcasm and be himself." LJS shoves the mask stuff in our face. M.-L. however, just seems so confused. She certainly doesn't seem to think about love or attraction in reasonable terms, just about kissing Ash. I certainly agree with your assessment of her. She seems to be more afraid of him (and potential love and attraction) than anything, and expresses her fear by kicking him. Poor Ash. She is also afraid of the loss of control. Poor Ash, indeed. What a future. I think she will put the Soulmate principle to the test! Puts me in mind of 'She Who Must Be Obeyed' the Brit tv show in the '80's. Hmmm. Although in the continuation on the LJS site, she turns horribly sappy in the last few pages, but then, Ash does too. Maybe that's just LJS without an editor. It was pretty saccharine there, in general, at the end. "Angel!" yuck. In defense of M.-L. the fight with Mark and the sisters in the forest continues to delight. I giggle every time I read it. Actually, Jade takes a lot of the credit for that. M.-L. is difficult, isn't she? I'm liking her less and less. And Ash looking more healthy and honest in his relationship with her. I should also like to say that reading this series and then the 'Twilight' series was quite illuminating. I thought Meyer cobbled together scenes and ideas from Night World and probably every vampire love story she had ever read. I think I saw some of the Sookie Stackhouse stuff in there, too. But the point is, it was too obvious. It seemed pretty close to plagarism in places. OK for fan fiction, but tacky in a best seller. Thanks for the analysis' and I love the site. Strange Fate must have been brutal to write with so many threads to try and tie up. However, I've got it pre-ordered and my hopes are high. j.(who has read Night World too many times!) |

This might sound weird but I wish the Night World was real because then we'd all find our soulmates (not to mention most of us would be supernatural) and also beacuse every Night World , Secret Circle and Vampire Diaries character seem so irresistable. I read all the Night World , Secret Circle and Vampire Diaries books and I can't wait for Strange Fate to be published so I started reading them all again. I've been writing a book based on L.J.'s work (thanks for the inspiration L.J.). It's taken me 7 months to write 26 double sided A4 pages and it's still not finished but I am so proud of it. If someone wants to chat about the Night World add me. |

| Other Comments: | I found your analysis of Mary-Lynnette very astute, and applaud you. However, I would like to note that while LJ had Mary-Lynnette quote "Taming of the Shrew" and "Pride and Prejudice," she also included themes from those works. Mary-Lynnette was a little shrewish, such as when she kicked Ash and was so mean to him, and having read "Pride and Prejudice" several times, I can attest to the fact that Mary-Lynnette is probably at least partly based on Elizabeth Bennett. And Elizabeth was prejudiced against Darcy as Mary-L was prejudiced against Ash, and Darcy was proud and arrogant just like Ash was. And at the end of "P&P" Darcy had lost his pride and was a good man -- just like Ash. And I think that those are important connections to make, because it wasn't just a tumultuous relationship -- LJ was making thematic literary allusions. Ones I'm particularly fond of.
Anyhow, I wrote some on the couple at my site (linked above) if you'd like to read. However, my writings on Ash are nothing compared to yours. You really dug into those books, didn't you? I'm impressed. |
