| Comments: | It's wonderful that you could find so much of your family's history. Most of what I know is from stories my g-grandmother, Doris Blackwell-Desmond, told me. My gg-grandfather's name was James Blackwell. He was from Virginia or West Virginia, and I'm not sure which part. As a boy, he carried water to the Confederate troops during the Civil War, and was freed by his "master" when the South's loss seemed inevitable. My gg-grandmother, Virginia, was his second wife, and was substantially younger than him when they married, The family moved to Cambridge, MA. They had, I believe, about 12 kids, most of whom didn't survive into adulthood. My g-grandmother, Doris, and her brother, Chauncey, were the only surviving children. If you come across any of these names in your research, as the kids say, holla. Take care, distant Blackwell relative! |

| Comments: | Hi all. My great-grandmother's was a women of african descent named Becky Blackwell from South Carolina. I'm not sure what part per that was all that was on the death certificate. She was married at the time. I'm uncertain as to whether her husband's name was Bam(Bann) or Ram(Rann) Smith because the certificate is barely ledgible. She had a child and nmed hom Tobe Smith that was born (as stated on the certificiate) "on the water" between South Carolina and Virginia.
