| Describe how you made this item?: | Okay, so I'm saving paper towl rolls, (I cut them in half to make two) and toilet paper rolls. I will tape 2 together first, then, on the second one, cut a hole on the top big enough for another roll. Next, fix one more roll in place and tape it so it stands up straight. Following that, cut a piece of cardboard stiff and long enough for your gerbil to perch on, and tape it to the very top of that roll. Then you are done with that roll. Return to the ones on the ground. Tape another one to the roll with the hole in it.Then cut a hole on the side and stick the last tube in that hole. Now your gerbil has 3 ways to enter, and VIOLA! You have a cool gerbil toy!! |

| Describe how you made this item?: | For the activity center, I get two 4 inch long four-by-four blocks and drilled a 1 1/2 hole all the way through each side, making a total of six holes all connected in the center of the block. After that, I get a three to four inch peice of 1 1/2 inch PVC pipe and bury all but the very ends of it in the bedding. I set the two finished four-by-four blocks on each end of the tunnel so that the blocks are connected by a tunnel underneath the bedding. Chipper and Annabelle love it!
For the nestbox, I get two 3-inch clay pots and cut a 1-inch tall by 1 1/2-inch long square hole on the rim of each pot. Then I align the holes and duct tape the pots togeter, making a 1-by-2 inch hole in the center of the newly-made nest box. My gerbils have chosen this one over all the other nest boxes I have made. I hope you amd your gerbils enjoy! |

| Describe how you made this item?: | I got a 30 gallon aquarium and cut four 1 inch sticks about 6 inchs long. I glued the sticks to the corners of the aquarium. Then I cut a piece of thin plywood and layed it on top of the sticks. I then cut a hole in the corner of the plywood. Put a ladder under the hole so they can climb up to the second story. | Describe how you made this item?: | I took three cardboard boxes the same size, high enough to keep the gerbils from jumping out, unfolded them and pulled them apart at one edge. Then I glued them together making a sort of circle that would keep the gerbils from roaming my house freely.
Then I placed several different items into the middle, such as tubes, ceramic fish tank bridge, a slide, a clear plastic kleenex box holder, and their wheel. The gerbils ran and played for a long time and really enjoyed themselves. Curry seems to understand when I start to take her from the cage, that it is playtime and she comes right to me. |

cereal, rice or pasta boxes (similar sizes) for this project. (NOTE: All 'floor holes' are cut out on the LARGE, label sides of the boxes.) Instructions: -For the first 'floor', take a box and cut out one gerbil-sized hole, 1 inch in from the bottom edge of one of the box, (near the middle). - Now, take a SECOND box and place it evenly over the first one - with their bottom edges lining up. - Cut a hole in THIS box ('2nd floor') - where it connects with the hole of the '1st floor' box. (There should now be a hole that allows access to both boz / 'floors') - Now, on the OPPOSITE edge and OPPOSITE side of the '2nd floor' box, cut another hole - 1 inch in from the edge and near the middle. - Take a THIRD box and line its bottom edge up with the bottom edge of '2nd-floor' box. - Cut a hold in this third box, where it meets the upper hole of the '2nd-floor box'. (These 2 floors are now connected by an access hole). - Continue like this, with alternating, 'floor-connecting' holes and a bunch of boxes. - Cut out some 'windows' along the sides of the boxes. - Secure the boxes with non-toxic glue (like 'Elmer's') or pieces of string. - That's it! * Use the 'Gerbil Hotel' in a large area (floor or bed) and keep and eye on he gerbils, of course! :) Yes, it will get chewed up, eventually, but it's easy and fun to replace... and space is hard to spare, but I want to keep my gerbil pair happy and entertained. So, I designed this large 'playroom' that can be set up quickly, and stored out of the way (like under a bed or against a wall) whenever desired. Be sure to keep a bag of carboard tubes, boxes, newspaper and safe, non-toxic toys nearby, to dump in the playroom at 'Playtime'...! :) You will need: - 6 sheets of inexpensive wood (or plastic), about 1/10 to 1/8 of an inch thick, at 4 feet long and 2 feet high (-This height allows me to go 'cover-less' and interract with the gerbs without escapes, but if you have a cat or something, you could knock 1 foot in height off 4 of the wood sheets, and make a plexiglass cover instead - see Instructions) - 10 small hinges - enough wood screws for the hinges - enough wood or plastic 'plugs' to cover any exposed screw tips - a screwdriver Instructions: WALLS: First, take 2 of the pieces of wood and lay them side-by-side at their 2-foot-high ends. -NOTE- Before screwing on the hinges, check to make sure the boards will be able to fold out to a 90-degree angle (half of a square), AND fold in together, quite flat. - Now, using two of the hinges (with each hinge placed about 3 inches in from the top and bottom of the wood), secure the wood pieces together where they meet. Then add a third hinge to the middle. - Do the same as above with 2 more of the wood pieces. FLOOR: For the folding floor, take the remaining 2 pieces of wood and lay them together at their 4-foot-wide edges. - Attach these 2 boards, using the last 6 hinges, evenly spaced along the wood 'seam'. FOLDING PLEXIGLASS COVER - I haven't done this, but it should work... - Take 2 pieces of 50 inch long by 26 inch high, 1/8 inch thick Plexiglass, and attach them lengthwise with hinges, like on the floor boards. (You would probably need to drill the screws in place.) Now, all you have to do is unfold the 2 sets of 'walls' and place them together - forming a square pen - on top of the unfolded floor square. - If the walls don't quite fit over the floor (or the cover doesn't cover with enough overhang) just slide the edges in and adjust the 'bends' to make everything fit. * MAKE SURE there are no sharp screw ends poking out! You should cover these with the wood 'plugs' before use. * Also, take care not to knock the Plexiglass cover into the pen!!! Drilling some screws along the outer edges of the cover would help to prevent this. - This project is much easier with a friend (or parent) to help out... Hinges can be awkward! ;p Have fun! |

tubing bought from the pet store, we joined two stacking systems with really interesting twists and turns so that rupert my gerbil gets lots of exercise. It is the rotastack system made in England and though it is intended for hamsters it is excellent for Gerbils. Because they like to burrow and it is clear perspex they don't make a mess and they are easier to see. It is lots of fun deciding how to customise the network. With the help of my mum we made toys for him with twigs, finding interesring shapes for him to climb over and through. |

Then you stick them together somehow using Non toxic glue. The only thing I've used is Elmers School Glue (Gel or white it doesn't matter) This won't hurt the gerbils and Me and my friends have been making toys for our gerbils like this for years! |

| Describe how you made this item?: | Well, I didnt actually make it but im going to. Its called the Gerbil Funhouse. heres what it madeout of. 4 pieces of 2 inche thick and 1 foot long. You take 4 pieces of thin metal (so gerbis dont chew through wood) and paste or nail them on the wood (i reccomnd pasting better) and 20 pieces of 1 inche thick wood and about 6 inches in length for the rooms. You take the 7 inche long wod and cut a square hole in the piece you want to be the door (do this to all pieces of wood you want to be doors) then take the other pieces of wood you donot want to be doors and nail those to the door wood (please use nails like they have on habitrail hideaways) Then place that near the corner where you want it to be and take a nail from the outside and nail that in on both sides of the room area. do this for all rooms you then have a funhouse! you can put toys in one room and other stuff in another room! |

| Describe how you made this item?: | Go to the hardware store and get black PVC pipes for plumbing. I used an upside-down "increser" (it looks like a big funnel) for a home (perfect for two). attached to the tube end that comes out of the funnel, I made a network of tubes. These hard plastic tubes are much cheaper than the habitrail version and are harder for them to chew through, but you can't see through them. This is perfect for when my gerbils are scared and just want to hide. The structure also adds space to their small home because many of the tubes run above the ground, with only openings on the floor.

If you need to extend the length of the water bottle holder that comes with them, say for a big aquarium that has the gerbils down alot lower than what the water bottle holder will reach, take paper clips and connect them one to the other to the original aquarium water bottle holder till it reachs down low enough for the gerbils to drink out of it. |

to some people, but if you ever come across large animal (cow, deer, etc.) bones anywhere, you can make some cool stuff. You can use most of the bones as is, but some you might want to make holes in for chewing purposes. Just clean them up very well (watch what you use to clean them!!! Is it harmful to gerbils???), let them dry, and then use them. Not only are they good chewing tools, but they are also good climbing structures. BTW, I would NOT recommend using skulls as they tend to be very breakable (you probably dont want pieces of bone all over). Gerbils LOVE these! |

their wheel and dig at the lid while I try to go to sleep. What I did is put a peice of wood on the lid right where the wheel is. It seems to teach them that they can't get out. I also made a treaty bell for them out of bird seed(which they LOVE). I got peanut butter and poured some bird seed in with the peanut butter, when it was hard enough(so it isn't sticky), I took it out and made it into a bell shape, then I put a string in the top and hung it from the lid!! Cabbage blocks make nice treats for your sweet, loving pets!!! |

| Describe how you made this item?: | I took a metal clothes
hanger, got a pair of pliers and started making shapes and curves in the hanger so it would hold the bottle. When you have finished the bottle disign, just bend the remaining wire, so it will hang over the side of the tank. One thing to keep in mind is: make sure you are able to get the bottle out of the holder easily!! It might take a few minutes to make it just right, but otherwise it's a cheap, fast way to make holders! They are especially nice for really tall tanks. Enjoy! |

| Describe how you made this item?: |  Take a nylon license plate nut & bolt set. Put the bolt away for some future use. Take the nut and hold it against the wheel strut, flange side toward the wheel. Thread the axle thru the nut and then the wheel strut. This will quiet the squeaky wheel by reducing the friction between the wheel strut and the axle spindle.

cardboward fax rolls, placed 2 on the floor of the tank adn placed a thick cardboard dog biscuit box on top. They make the bed in the dog biscuit box and it takes ages to chew it up. They also get boxes from supermarkets inside each other like a maze. |
