The 1901 census of Preston lists her as being 32 and born in Fernyhalgh. I have reason to believe her full name was Margaret Alice. The same census lists Elizabeth Rigby (age 65) as living with Alice and her husband Frederick Gerigs. I have no idea who Alice's father was, or if Elizabeth is her natural mother or her step-mother, but she appears as Frederick's mother-in-law. | Comments: Hi all you Rigbys out there! My mother was a Rigby - one of 9 children of Thomas Rigby and Mary Elizabeth (Simpson) of Lancaster, Lancashire, England. Thomas was born in Crewe (1876), Cheshire and had 4 brothers (James, John, Albert, Joseph) and 2 sisters (Elizabeth & Florence). James and John have been found in the 1911 Canadian census living in Toronto. James joined the CEF in 1914 and came to England with them but never went to France (he was invalided out in 1916). Albert was in the Royal Engineers and won the Croix de Guerre in Belgium. I would be very interested in finding out more about this branch of the Rigby family tree. | |

| Comments: I have been researching my RIGBY family tree for many years, and keep getting stumped, I have ordered and received many marriage certs, and found out that my GGGrandfather was married 3 times, so surely there is somebody out there related - he was James Barton Hutton RIGBY b. 1857 died 1910 at West Deby Infirmary at the time was married to a Maria Edith (nee Broad), that lived at Hinslow Street, his Father was a James Winstanley RIGBY, he had a brother whom was George Deacon RIGBY who was a Solicitor in Cumberland, who m. a Fanny WILSON, I have a lot of records etc about that family, maybe there is a relative from that part of the family still living that could contact me. His parents were George Rigby and Jane Fairhurst. The 1880 UK census shows him living with his mother (who had remarried after George's death) in Ashton-under-Lyne. He emigrated to the United States before 1896 and settled in Pawtucket, Rhode Island USA. Thomas married Alice Lund in 1896 and fathered 7 children. | Comments: Hi, I am a Rigby too and, like most Rigbys, we come from Lancashire originally. My gg grandfather was George Rigby born in Wigan, Lancs c1871. He was the son of Thomas Rigby born Pemberton c1838 and Elizabeth ? born Kirkham c1842. Thomas was a collliery carpenter and Elizabeth was a cotton worker. They had 3 other children: Joshua, James and Mary Ann. George was the youngest of the four children and also worked at the local colliery (Bamfurlong). In approx 1896 George married Elizabeth ? a dressmaker born in Wigan c1880. The couple had a number of children as follows: Stuart, Mary Alice, Margaret and Frederick G. We have lost touch with this side of the family so if you are related in any way to any of the above, it would be great to hear from you. Elizabeth died and George married a widow - Mary Ann Higham (nee Taylor) in 1912. The couple went on to have 2 sons: Clifford and Ernest Rigby. Ernie Rigby is my grandfather - sadly, he died earlier this year. George was a keen sportsman and played Rugby for Lancashire. He was a loose forward, at first playing Rugby Union for Wigan and Prescott until the split when he changed to Rugby League(Northern Rugby Union). Her Stepmother's name was Isabella (maiden - Billington), (nee 1st marriage - Rigby) Smith, she married Mr. Smith around 1916.....Coming to the Smith family she may have had 3 children with Mr. Rigby, Agnes, Big Willie, and Wilfred, Mr. Rigby had a daughter Florence with another woman prior to Isabella. Isabella had a son with Mr. Smith; Francis b.1917 d.1944 in Burma, WW2. Florence Rigby married John Smith, my grandmother's brother. They had 2 children, Margaret "Madge" (nee Smith) Bickerton d.2001 of Barton, Preston and Austin Smith......Upon Joe Smith's death, she re-married Mr. Wilson who had 3 children; Beatrice, Margaret "Madge", and little Winnie. | Comments: Comments: I have been researching my RIGBY family tree for many years, and keep getting stumped, I have ordered and received many marriage certs, and found out that my GGGrandfather was married 3 times, so surely there is somebody out there related - he was James Barton Hutton RIGBY b. 1857 died 1910 at West Deby Infirmary at the time was married to a Maria Edith (nee Broad), that lived at Hinslow Street, his Father was a James Winstanley RIGBY, he had a brother whom was George Deacon RIGBY who was a Solicitor in Cumberland, who m. a Fanny WILSON, I have a lot of records etc about that family, maybe there is a relative from that part of the family still living that could contact me. I also have found an Allan Danson Rigby whom did part of the funeral service for George, he was a step-brother of the two.My GGrandfather was also a James Winstanley RIGBY m. an Elizabeth Florence MILLer of Great Wilbraham. | Comments: My family name is Rigby. The name Rigby goes back to the 12th century. It means a man who lived or worked a farm on a ridge. The bulk of Rigby's appear to be from the Lancashire area. I can only assume that there must have been a lot of ridges in Lancashire.My grand-father came from Wigan-still cant find the pier-but he moved to London at the turn of the 20th century and married in that area. | Comments: Hey Rigbys! I am the youngest daughter of Rev. Joseph Carl Rigby b. 1940 the youngest son of Joseph Early Rigby b. 1882. My grandfather was Joseph Andrew Rigby b. 1849 son of Russell Thomas Rigby b 1798. I found a William and a John Rigby in the 1785 census records of Duplin-Craven County North Carolina. I'm not sure where to go from there but I'm told that my family lived in Lancashire County England before coming to America. I'm not sure which year they came to America so sifting through ship records is where I am now.
