George Rigby born about 1809 died March 28 1894 buried St. James Anglican Cemetery, Main-a-Dieu, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He married Clarissa Susannah Brown on June 29 1832 in St. George's Church, Sydney. She was born about 1809 died June 30 1893 and is also buried at St. James. 2. Their daughter Elizabeth Margaret Rigby born July 19 1833 at Main-a-Dieu, died Feb 25 1915 Maitland, Nova Scotia. She married Captain William Martell on Feb 7, 1859 at St. George's Church, Sydney. He was born at Main-a-Dieu in 1829 and died at sea on Mar 9, 1864. 3. Evelyn Rigby (no dates or details). | Comments: Elkhart Indiana line of Rigbys: Frank Rigby and Gladys had Clarence Rigby Nov. 4, 1891 in Waterloo, Indiana. From what I know, he was an only child. He lived most of his life in Elkhart, Indiana, and married Eva May Shemberger (b. August 5, 1896) on December 8, 1914. Their children were Vallie Clarence Rigby (b. December 19, 1915 - d. December 22, 1994) and Betty M. Rigby (born March 9, 1923 - d. 1947. Betty died of tuberculosis. Vallie was able to marry Maxine Cunningham (b. August 12, 1914 - d. May 8, 2002), and they had 3 children, one of whom is my father. I would love to know more about this line of Rigbys. | |

| Comments: Greetings. It is great to see this site. I am originally from South Shields in the north east of England. My father was Thomas Varley William Rigby and he too was born in South Shields. Somewhere along the line there was a connection between the Rigby family name and the Varley family name. I understand that there was also a connection with mining in the late Victorian times. Also, either my grandfather or great grandfather received a medal and other commenerations for saving lives in the North Sea. I like the idea that I'm maybe related to St John Rigby, a Catholic saint, martyred around 1600. Not that I wish to suffer a similar fate, but I like his persistence in what he believed in and his sticking to his beliefs to the very end. My father is Ronald Kenneth Rigby who was residing somewhere in Ohio the last time I checked. His father was Jack (John?) Rigby (deceased) also from Petersburg (but probably not originally). I believe my Grandmother's name was Beatrice Rigby. There was a T.J. Rigby of Missoula, Montana that I corresponded with briefly when I was a child. He may have been an uncle to Jack Rigby. | Comments: Great to see so many Rigby families on your site. I would be interested in linking up with Rigbys esp from my home town of Wigan, Lancashire, England, who may be related. I live in Spain. My maternal ggrandmother Mary Rigby b 1849 of Wigan, married John Hall. She was one of 5 children of John Rigby b 1819 of Wigan and Elizabeth Melling. Her siblings were William (who emigrated to Canada and has descendants there), Ellen, Elizabeth and Catherine. John b 1819 was the only son of William Rigby b 1793 of Wigan who married Ellen Houghton. William b 1793 was the son of John Rigby b 1771 who married Ann Bamber. Their other son was named William. John Rigby b 1771 was possibly the son of John Rigby and Mary Lawson. Incidentally I used to teach at St John Rigby RC College at Orrell which holds an annual walk to the hall in memory of St John Rigby who was canonised while I was teaching there in the 70s. I have an extensive tree and further info to share with anyone who may be related. | |

Thomas was born in Crewe (1876), Cheshire and had 4 brothers (James, John, Albert, Joseph) and 2 sisters (Elizabeth & Florence). James and John have been found in the 1911 Canadian census living in Toronto. James joined the CEF in 1914 and came to England with them but never went to France (he was invalided out in 1916). | Comments: Hi, I am a Rigby too and, like most Rigbys, we come from Lancashire originally. My gg grandfather was George Rigby born in Wigan, Lancs c1871. He was the son of Thomas Rigby born Pemberton c1838 and Elizabeth ? born Kirkham c1842. Thomas was a collliery carpenter and Elizabeth was a cotton worker. They had 3 other children: Joshua, James and Mary Ann. George was the youngest of the four children and also worked at the local colliery (Bamfurlong). In approx 1896 George married Elizabeth ? a dressmaker born in Wigan c1880. The couple had a number of children as follows: Stuart, Mary Alice, Margaret and Frederick G. We have lost touch with this side of the family so if you are related in any way to any of the above, it would be great to hear from you. Elizabeth died and George married a widow - Mary Ann Higham (nee Taylor) in 1912. The couple went on to have 2 sons: Clifford and Ernest Rigby. Ernie Rigby is my grandfather - sadly, he died earlier this year. George was a keen sportsman and played Rugby for Lancashire. He was a loose forward, at first playing Rugby Union for Wigan and Prescott until the split when he changed to Rugby League(Northern Rugby Union). Since that time I have determined that my 2nd great grandfather EDWARD JOHN RIGBY b. 21.2.1821 was married to Margaret Jean Glass b 1828 in London.
