Studies have shown the duration of protective immunity as measured by serum antibody titers against rabies virus to persist for seven years post-vaccination, and results of a 1992 French challenge study led by Michel Aubert demonstrated dogs were immune to rabies five years after vaccination. Researchers believe the rabies vaccine causes the most and worst adverse reactions in animals and concur that it should not be given more often than necessary to maintain immunity. Adverse reactions to rabies vaccination can include autoimmune diseases affecting the thyroid, joints, blood, eyes, skin, kidney, liver, bowel and central nervous system; anaphylactic shock; aggression; seizures; epilepsy; and fibrosarcomas at injection sites. Dr. Schultz states “[s]howing that a vaccine for rabies can provide 5 or preferably 7 years of immunity would have great significance not only in controlling rabies but more importantly in reducing the adverse vaccine reactions that can occur in dogs and cats after vaccination." I then received one rescue boy that was a Standard and he was 5 years old and that was where I lost my heart. I had dogs all my life and never knew what poodles were like and Standards go beyond that. It's hard to explain. I lost that poodle to cancer and thought ok no more I can't do this but lo and behold here comes Ebonee. I got her out of Oregon and am planning on breeding her but what a dog. I swear she talks. She recently was my traveling campanion on a road trip from Washington (state) to Colorado and back again. It was her first long trip via car...staying in hotels, etc. During the entire trip everyone we came in contact with commented on her "regal stride" and marvelous disposition....I think I even converted a few of Sally's admirers into becoming Standard Poodle owners too! :) Sally lives with a friend...a Greyhound mix (Kahluha)...also a very nice, sweet dog. Because Kahluha is getting older, I am looking for a Standard Parti Poodle puppy. I'm hoping to acquire one before Kahluha leaves this earth so the puppy will have TWO excellant role models to learn from...thus my interest in the Kandyland Poodle site. Anyway, to anyone considering a Standard...take it from me, you won't regret it if you do aquire one. :)) |
