Your comment or story:Hello! I wish I had found this site a year ago. I had part of my colon removed and ended up with..you got it...THE BAG. Eight months later I had reversal surgery that was "hellish" to say the least..I didn't have a lot of other problems that some of you have written about. I just had problems with infections. The only real problem was that I couln't find shoes to match my bag...!

Your comment or story:Steve a few comments below, I understand that there is complaining but there are a lot of people that are not like you. That is great that you have been able to adjust but you know nothing different. I received mine at the age of 19, was in the Army, and serving my country proudly. I understand that people are complaining but this is the type of site for that, and for support. I understand you have to move on with your life but there is a huge difference between growing up with one, and living one way and completely altering your life. I have had 16 surgeries in the past in 8 years, but yet I have gotten my Bachelors and my Masters, gotten married and started my own successful business while going through all of that. I am still in the hospital atleast one time every year due to different complications of obstructions, and other issues. However I don't tell people to get over it and actually just try to give advice. Everyone is different so don't jump on someone for complaining, about a life altering experience, maybe it is their way to vent to someone that actually understands what they are going through. Tough words work on some people but not everyone here responds to a drill SGT, I suggest you join up with http://www.ostomyguide.com/no-guts-know-glory-seven-summits-campaign-to-climb-mount-everest/ and see if you can do that with them. That is awesome you are in wonderful shape and feeling great, but give support, to the complainers and see how you can help make them feel better since you "know the ways" instead of just calling them "whiners."

Your comment or story:RE: Pam Winger- Pam's Son Chris Facebooked Me to tell Me that my wonderful Friend & fellow Ostomate Pam Gellerson Winger-from Canada passed away 1-30-2011. I was aware that Pam posted on this site. I thought you might like to know that Pam is now an Angel watching over us all. Bonded by Ostomy Friends we'll always be. I met Pam when she emailed Me following the passing of our mutual Friend Elizabeth Lynn who passed away 4-14-2007. Bonded by Ostomy Friends we'll always be. RIP Liz - I will never forget you :)

I am so grateful to have this site- for Ostomy info & more importantly Friendships formed with Ostomates- people that have gone through life altering experiences like Me that share their experiences and become wonderful Friends sharing life experiences. My Ostomy Friends are Angels on earth. My wonderful Friend & fellow Ostomate Alistair Robinson-Scotland is a gift to Me. Long live Ali & Me so we have eachother to share Ostomy info & more importantly- Friendship on earth.

Thank you UOA for hosting this site which has enriched my life in so many ways through the wonderful Friendships I have made when just stopping by to read ostomy info as a new ostomate & carried Me through to today posting this very heartbreaking news that we have lost another wonderful Ostomate & gained a very strong Angel-Pam.

Your comment or story:Hello Everyone,

I had surgery on April 13, 2010, to repair an Abdominal Aortic Aneursym. My wonderful vascular surgeon was very up-front about the risks and long recovery period without complications. There were complications during this surgery which caused it to take much longer than normal. I could not wake up and the doctors did not know why I wasn't responding. By the way, all of this information I learned from family members, doctors and nurses. I remember nothing. Four days later, on April 17, 2010, a wizard of a doctor figured it out. I had lost blood supply to my colon during the repair surgery and it was basically rotting away and poisioning by blood stream. He did an emergency surgery and used the same incision that was made for the AAA repair and made me an ileostomy. Actually, the doctors had told my family that I might not survive, but here I am. So I went into the hospital with an aneursym which is now gone but came out with the ileostomy about which I was totally ignorant and for which I was totally unprepared. My family asked the doctor to tell me about it and explain it to me. Long story, short; I was devastated. After 64 days in the hospital, I was released to come home still hooked to a wound vac and requiring a home health nurse and home physical therapist because I was barely able to speak because of being on the ventilator so long, barely able to walk, and as depressed as I think a human could possibly become. However, I have always been a fighter and made up my mind that with the amazing doctors who saved my life, the many people who had prayed for me, and last but not least, my devoted husband, sisters, and son who had took care of me when I couldn't do it myself, would not be let down. It has taken months now with many ups and downs, but I am adjusting to living with my ostomy and all that comes with it as well as recovering from the two surgeries. The doctors told me it would take at least one year for me to recoup. I am slowly regaining muscle strenth and still go to physical therapy 3 times a week and even though I get frustrated daily because of the ostomy and the change that comes with it, I simply have a little cry, if necessary, and pray for strength mentally and physically. After all, as it has been said many times, "it's better than the alternative." Without my ostomy, I would be history, therefore, I am so very grateful to be alive that as the highs and lows come and go, I deal with them.

Your comment or story:I have had an ileostomy for ten years and have enjoyed many trips here in the US and in Europe. No problems flying for I make sure I have the necessary supplies with me. But. . . now that TSA security has increased, I am hesitant to book my flight to England in January. After reading the news story about Thomas Sawyer, I am worried about what this "adventure" will be like for me. Any advice?

Your comment or story:Seriously, I see too much complaining here. I came down with UC at age 5, had an ileostomy at age 11, and I am now 54 years old. I have college degrees, work full time, married with kids, and have never used the word disability in my life. I have skydived, backpacked europe and wilderness areas, ski, camp, bike ride, etc. I eat anything and everything - usually too much(!) - but have stayed in good health and physical shape. I did go through an internal scar tissue surgery at age 13, but no issues otherwise. Over time you learn what you need to know. So, stop worrying, stop complaining, and get on with life. You are still alive, right?

Your comment or story:After suffering from UC for a good 20 years, and having been on high doses of cortisone for 10 of those years, I had to make the decision to have an ileostomy and total colectomy, as the cortisone was no longer working, was affecting my bone density and my face looked like the full moon.I was virtually house bound as I could not be away from a toilet for long as I needed to go at least 30 times a day and life was extremely hard to bear. I had the op in June 2006 and with much trepidation, came home to face the world with my perceived disability. What a difference this op.has made to my life--can go anywhere at any time and most often I forget that I even wear a bag and now that the cortisone has worked it's way out of my system, I no longer have Cushingoid features.I am thankful every day that I made the decision to go ahead with the op.
Whilst I was recuperating, I searched the web for a site on dealing with ileostomies and so luckily came across your wonderful webpage. I cannot begin to tell you how much your advice has helped me and others whom I know have been through the same surgery and each month I look forward to your newsletter. The amazing thing is that I had no idea where Evansville was and only discovered recently, as we plan our emigration from South Africa to Canada, that Evansville is right there in Canada. What a bonus, being closer to your domain and as soon as I have a new e-mail address in BC. I look forward to the continuation of your very helpful, practical newsletters. We are hoing to settle in Victoria area and I will need to find an ET nurse so would be grateful for any names and e-mail addresses so that I can make contact and also find out where to get supplies of bags etc.
Sincere thanks for a wonderful, inspiring web site and I do hope that you keep on with it.
Kind Regards,
Carol.

I have lived good life with the ostomy and renewed heart, worked and travelled and did all my hobbies. Thanks to my doctors. At present a tumor on my lungs is radiated and I still live. Your comment or story:Hi,
Just wanted to add to the many other positive letters from individuals with and Illeostomy. I had my surgery in 1984. I have been working full time ever since even now at the age of 70. I do great deal of volunteer work including chain saw work etc. I love to ski and skied cross country 600 miles this year. I have done the American Birkebeiner Ski race 23 times. I have always felt that this surgery gave me a new life and appreciate all that the surgery has allowed me to do. The only reason for writing this is to let people in doubt know that in many cases, one can lead a very normal healthy life. I am one of the fortunate ones but I do work at staying in shape and eating healthy foods.
Please feel free to write if you have any questions of me.

I have developed some issues with the ileostomy lately, namely, 2 prolapses, and a bulging hernia of the small bowel. My surgeon is going to attempt to reconstruct another "J"pouch within a few weeks. I was wondering if there was anyone out there whom has had more than one "J"pouch constructed during their life whom would care to contact me about how they faired with this rather complicated procedure.

Your comment or story:The protocol my surgeon and Oncologist followed was that I underwent radiation- & chemo-therapy before surgery. I was operated on on the 8th June 2009. Recovery from surgery, mainly the rectal ablation wound took two months. Post-op chemotherapy had no side-effects. I am leading the same active, fulfiiling lifestyle that I have for 65 years.

The medical care I had was nothing short of outstanding. The surgeon, Dr. John Steachan, the Oncologist, Dr. Adam McCleave,Entebeni Hospital staff and the Durban Oncology Center staff are not only highly competent professionals, also approachable, concerned nice peple to interact with.

The prayers of my family, my church and friends and my Christian faith played an important role in my recovery.

If I can help anyone either by gioving advice, relating my experience which has been so very positive or through prayer, do please contact me.

I've had my ileostomy due to ulcerative colitis since 1990. I'm 56 and doing absolutely fine! I've got to say that I've never had to see my doctor about my ileo since my surgery 19 yrs. ago. I consider myself extremely fortunate. I have a full time job that keeps me hopping. I also love working in the yard and walking my dog.
In other words I do all the normal things required of every day living. If anyone would like to contact me with questions or concerns about their ileo's please feel free.
I will do my best to put your mind at ease.... or just give you moral support.

Your comment or story:I have had a irritation around part of my Stomal area WARM WATER does the trick, it's clearing up well.
Another VERY simple system, is to use the HYDRO COLLOID WAFER ON TOP OF THE IRRITAION.
This may be seem difficult if the irritation is OUTSIDE the wafer area, NO problem! Cut the hole for your STOMA in the WAFER in such a position that your Irritated skin is covered by the wafer, Instead of dead center u may have to cut the hole 1 inch or 1&1/2 inch from center. or maybe cut it Lower or Higher! IT WORKS believe me, Just like the WARM WATER I used to spout about Many years ago. The KISS system is always the best.
Don't Forget to SLOP that WARM WATER around the STOMAL AREA, and of course the wafer to remove it! DO NOT USE THE WIPES, Sorry all you manufacturers.
My irritation this time was simply because I left my Wafer on TOO long. Wishing everyone a GOOD New year and Future.
Sincerly MIKE here in OZ

Your comment or story:Hi,

I am 46 and have Chron's disease since I'm 23. I had to have an emergence ileostomy around 10 years ago. Single mom to a 14 year old son who suffers from Tourettes syndrome among other challenges.

I need your help!!!!!! PLEASE

I was recently in the hospital with kidney failure. I was recently hospitalized for two weeks for EXTREMELY LOW MAGNESIUM AND POTASSIUM. Life or death low.

My body is not holding my magnesium and potassium levels.
The Doctors don't know why. They say it's due to my ostomy output but don't seem to know how to correct the problem.
HELP, I know someone out there has had to either had this same problem or know someone who has had this problem.

My blood is being tested twice a week and once again my magnesium level is only 1.5. I take the magnesium pills 2 three times a day and keep having to go to the hospital for magnesium infusions. Is this gonna be my life?? I live in Pennsylvania (Poconos) not the greatest Doctors here. I take Klor-Con powder for the Potassium and it seems to be working ok. Still fluctuates but not nearly as bad as the Magnesium. I never realized how serious electrolyte imbalance was until almost dying from it.

If you can help me, I would be forever grateful. I know the answer is out there somewhere. Will someone bless me with the answer I am looking for. Please e-mail me at fulloflifemom@aol.com

Thank you and God Bless,
Caron

Your comment or story:I see many folks concerned about their ileostomies and their concerns. Please...don't be overly concerned. At first, my biggest concern was always a leaking appliance, but once you get that hurdle cleared, you're good to go. And finding out what you can and can't eat - its all trial and error - what gave me problems before UC and the surgery, gave me problems afterwards - so I just avoided those foods. You just learn as you go. For example, I eat cashews...but not a lot. Maybe that would bother someone else's system - we're all different.

I'm 58 years old and have had my ileostomy right after I turned 19. I honestly don't think about mine and have never felt any different than someone that does NOT have one. I see emails from folks that are concerned about running, exercising, flying, having children - you can do these things. Just like anything else we do in our lives, use common sense. Do I eat popcorn? - Yes..a few handfuls and I'm happy. Do I enjoy a good glass of wine and a beer? Yes, in moderation. Do I exercise and workout (this includes weight training, aerobics, walking, etc.)? Yes, when I'm not do darned lazy. Do I have children? Yes, natural childbirth to a son 27 years ago. Do I travel - take road trips - walk - bike - (backpacked for a month through Europe at age 27) - yes, and was I concerned about my ileostomy when I did these things? No. Do I worry about restroom facilities where I work due to my ileostomy and always carry a change of clothes whereever I go? No, but I always keep a spare appliance with me at all times. It leaks, ya fix it. The first mistake people make is assuming they're different than everyone else. Don't do that. My biggest cheerleaders were my parents and they were absolutely wonderful with support.

If you're having difficulty with leaky appliances, one that doesn't fit properly - get ahold of your ET and try something new. Trial and error when you eat - what may bother one ostomate may not bother another. Don't be afraid of life - its because of our surgeries we have life. Single folks....you will find the right person and if they're not accepting of your ostomy, then obviously, they're not the right person for you, you deserve better.

Do I sound like I'm on a soapbox? Probably....but in 39 years, I've dealt with many of the situations you're going through at one time or another. I see other folks that have posted that have had their ostomies longer than I have - pretty amazing, don't you think? For those of you that are new to this adjustment to your life - stay strong, stay positive. You can do this. Kick back and enjoy life....and always carry that spare appliance.

Your comment or story:Had to have an ileostomy surgery on July 1st. I'm in a nursing home for therapy. My pouch leaks nearly every day. The new one is often put on by less than a nurse. Recently I'm having irritation on the skin under the pouch which is painful. Due to difficulty in swallowing, my food is pureed and some of it, I cannot eat. I am hoping things will improve. My age is 81, with good mentality.

Your comment or story:I am 37 yrs old. I have an ileostomy. I've had it for a year and I keep praying it's temporary. I have it because it's just 1 of the numerous wonderful situations that I've been privileged enough to experience as a result of stage 3 level 4 colorectal cancer. I was diagnosed at 34 yrs of age. I think we should encourage people to be examined a lot younger than 45-50.I can't get thru a day without thinking "if only...".I have endured a colectomy,a liver resection,an illeostomy, 4-5 minor surgeries, chemotherapy (5 different rounds, all for varying #s of months) radiation, numerous hospital vacations, sickness, fatigue, weight loss( cancer is a really good diet) neuropathy, slight addiction to dilaudid, withdrawals (that sucked), and a complete upheaval of my life in general. I'm still here, I'm still fighting (although I would feel better if I could actually punch cancer) and I definitely plan on proving quite a few doctors wrong. I am Blessed and I mean that.

Your comment or story:A big thank you to Larry Trapp for putting me in contact with a fellow ostomate Charlie Grotevant. I was a runner for 30 years prior to an auto accident that caused a pelvic injury which lead to the loss of my ileostomy. I was devastated to say the least and read everything I could. I subscribed to the Phoenix Magazine and read Charlie's story. I had received the Evansville Ostomy News letter and I sent the editor Larry Trapp and email and asked if he knew anyone who was a runner with an ileostomy. Guess what he emailed me right back and sent me Charlie's email address the exact person I wanted to talk to and meet. Charlie has helped me more than words can ever convey. Thank you Larry Trapp and to all involved with this valuable news letter. My life has changed so dramatically because of Larry's immediate help and putting me in contact with Charlie Grotevant my Savior. God Bless all of you and Happy Holidays. Sue Parker

Your comment or story:As yesterday was the 28th anniversary of John Lennon's death, I would like to tell anyone who knows about an epiphany to know that I had one then(1980)! I was 23, a year and a half worn out from ulcerative colitis, tired of tests and prognoses - as well as friendly, caring relatives who said they had better medicine in their part of the country (I was in Oregon; they were in New York City)- I just wanted to live again. I had had my ileostomy five days previously - December 3, 1980. On the 8th, I went through the usual routines, but that evening, I was sad for the first time. I was finally off all tubes, assistance, even shots. I was told to get up and move around, shake up the adhesions, take pills for pain... I had been sick for long enough and grateful for a cure; then, when this 'cure' hit, I finally didn't like it. I cried for the first - and last - time. It was some time in the evening - 8 or 9 P.M. West Coast time. I stopped moping, crawled out of bed, grabbed my trees - you know what I mean - and decided to walk around the floor. After a few minutes, I heard a nurse, racing down the hallway, calling, crying, that John Lennon had just been killed in New York. I froze. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I thought that one of my beloved Beatles had just been killed, and I was crying over being given a chance to be alive and enjoying life again. I never cried again.
By the way, I woke in my ward the second day of my surgery to a football game on television (perfect time of year!) to hear the words that the place kicker Ralph Bernische (sp.?) of the San Diego Chargers AND HIS ILEOSTOMY BAG just kicked - I don't know - an extra point? a field goal? a punt? If I could have fallen out of my bed at those words, I would have!!!
Well, 28 year later, I have a wonderful life. I teach at a great high school - 9th and 11th grade English - have the greatest husband, live in a wonderful part of the world (all my very happy opinion!), and have an absolutely magical dog, Barney, who is 20! Human years! Beagle/Basset. We've had other dogs who have since passed, but Barney's with us now, and we are a happy family! And I wish all who may read this the magic of knowing that we ostomates - and our friends and families - are ALL OK!

Your comment or story:Wishing all fellow ostomates a very happy, healthy holiday season. Keep your spirits up! There are many problems facing the world today, and the first line of defence is coping with our own bodies. Second is what I am doing now, reaching out with love and concern for others who are dealing with our changed and often challenged, bodies.

Like Tiny Tim said, " God Bless Us One and All".

Your comment or story:I have an permanent illeostomy as the result of Crohn's disease. Five years ago in Nov. I was hospitalized for 9 days with a total blockage in my colon. Three months later I was almost completely blocked again, and my doctors advised that my best chance was to have an illeostomy, which I did in Feb. 2004. Nine months later I had a perineal fistulectomy. I did not have Crohn's in my small intestine, and today I am healthy and well. I work full time, do my own yard work, and stay busy. I am grateful to be alive and feeling good again. Thank you for producing the newsletter to help us learn and connect with others.

I'm still unable to change my appliance by myself, and have all kinds of skin problems. I absolutely HATE bag day which we now have up to 4 days. If it were not for my wife I simply could not be here today.

Your comment or story:I am 32 years old and I have had my ileostomy for 3 years because of FAP. I am trying to lose weight so I may have the j-pouch like my sis and dad. My 10-year old niece has our disease too. She will start her tests pretty soon, just to see when surgery will be necessary. Because with our disease, the colon MUST come out. I have adapted well to my ileo, but I can't wait to be hooked up again!!! My life is still great, and I can do just about everything with this ileo!

Your comment or story:I am very happy to be receiving this news letter. A lot of what is said, I had to learn on my own the hard way so it is wonderful that such helpful information is out there for neew ostomates.
It did take me longer to get used to being "differnt" and I think I "missed" my colon since it had been with me for over 60 years...but the alternative was not an option. I am so glad to be without the bowel disease (UC) which could not be managed with medication and I sure am so happy to be without pain.

Thanks for the newsletter. It is appreciated.
