: I'm a new fan whose life has pretty much been turned upside down since discovering Lucinda's music. Saw her twice on this tour, once in Torrington, CT and again in Akron, OH. A study in contrast, she was struggling to hold herself together in Connecticut and performed mostly on auto-pilot, in Akron she was obviously having a great time (with lots of encouragement from the audience) and it was probably the best concert I've ever been part of - I'm the same age as Lu and I've been to a few! I'm sure she'll be glad to get home to Nashville, and I'm so grateful for the Herculean effort Lu and the band have put themselves through for this very demanding tour.

: We just saw Lucinda at the Highland Ballroom in Akron on Sat. 12/3/01....I am so glad she came to Akron, instead of Cleveland...you can't imagine how nice it is to only have a 6 minute ride home instead of 40+! She played an awesome set, and kept commenting on how great the sound was onstage. I hope she comes back and brings some bignames so we can go see her again and again! The crowd was totally into the music, jamming for over 2 hours to her every move and sound! One fan got so excited, she jumped up onstage and hugged Lu! Security escorted the adoring fan away, and no harm was done to Lu. I don't think the fan would've made it out of the theater alive, had she harmed Lu. Great show, great singer.

: Saw Lucinda at the Ryman in Nashville Sunday night. It was one of the most awesome shows I have ever seen! THere are no words to describe how her music moves me. Emmylou was an added treat! I am just blown away. I am a new fan of Lucinda's, and would love to see her again. She played a whole set at the encore, with Emmylou, and the excellent band! She did a new song that was cut from the new CD I think it was called "Words Fail" or "Words Fell" something like that. She says it will be on the next cd. It is beautiful. I LOVE LUCINDA!

: I was at Lucinda's show at the Warner Theatre in Torrington Ct. Nov. 14 th 2001. This is the 5 th time I have seen her and had front row center seats.I am a huge fan.
Well the opening act was over at 9 pm. Lucinda came out at 10 pm and nearly had a melt down on stage saying " how fucked up and tired " she was. She almost walked off the stage but managed to pull herself together. She was actually funny and likened herself to Loretta Lynn in Coal miners daughter - who passed out on stage under the pressure. It was uncomfortable but she did put on a good show.I think the audience was stunned.Only one encore.

: Lucinda did play in Burlington on 9/12. She opened the show by asking for a moment of silence for the victims, then after it, said "Let's rock and roll" and tore into "Metal Firecracker".
It was an excellent show, much better than the Northampton, Mass. show in June. Band seems much tighter. She played a Dylan song ("Masters of war?) during the encores and said it is difficult being a pacifist when your country has been attacked. She also played "Sweet Old World" and a song recorded but not released for "Essence" ("Words Fall?") during the encores. Show was two hours.

: Saw the 8/16/01 show in Kansas City. I was wondering if anyone knows the lineup and the equipment that was used. I'm very interested in learning about this style.

I read on this list about how good Lucinda's "old" bands were....They must have been levitating during the show.

Lucinda's band, right now, I would put up against any band in the world. (and yes, I've seen quite a few ( Stones X2, Dregs, Rundgren's Utopia band, U2, Elton's YBR band; I haven't seen Miles or Mahavishnu, but you get my drift).

I could listen to her current band for days. I wish the show had been recorded.

God your good. It was Linda's birthday today, so I drove about 50 miles away just to give her a hug, b-day present, and spent a good few hours with her. Hey, do you read these?
I sure hope so. anyhow, keep in touch and Linda says hi.

: I saw you live for the first time in my life at the House of Blues in LA on July 30. I expected a lot. Car Wheels and Essence had shaken my world.

What I saw was quite simply the best concert in 30 years, back to Janis and the other great bands in San Francisco in the late 60's. I could not love you and your songs more than
I do. Thank you.

I was horrified two days later by your mistreatment on Leno August 1. I can only imagine the turmoil inside as you waited through 57 minutes of drivel. Thank God for the short Apocalypse clip! You were improperly presented and I am angry. I hurt for you.

A small suggestion: Essence is such a powerful song. It needs building to it.

Somebody tell Lucinda to please stay away from that place. It's a toss-up between Boston and Cleveland for best show. Changed The Locks is the only pre-Car Wheels song played at any of these shows. Kasey Chambers has been excellent at all these shoes as well (she wasn't in Nashville).

: I just saw the Chicago show, at Skyline Stage, last night. It was, of course, worth the wait. Lucinda was in perfect voice. I don't know all the new band members names yet but The rythym section still needs a little more cohesion and "tighten up" time. Bo Ramsey was awesome! He has everything that makes a guitarist great. Taste and chops. Doug Pettibone was good, but left me missing the unbeatable work of Kenny Vaughn.
Nonetheless, I would love to see at least three singles go to radio out of this record, and for the tour to last a good long time.

: Hi. Saw Ms. Williams at Wolf Trap in the rain & fog on June 8. She had tough acts to follow. Kasey Chambers did a fine opening set, closing with the hilarious "We're all Going to Die Someday". Richard Thompson played solo with just his acoustic guitar for an hour - a brilliant set. Funny songs, twisted songs, ballads & astonishing guitar playing. Lucinda's band did not start out strong, or together, and the set consisted mostly of songs from Essence, which had not been released yet, with some Gravel Road sprinkled in. "Lonely Girls" was the worst: depressing, numbingly repetitive & an out of sync backing. But gradually the band got its act together, & the last four songs: the Dire Straits sounding song from Essence, Changed the Locks (the only pre-Gravel Wheels song, unfortunately), Essence (a mind blowing, psychedelic performance that had folks screaming) & Joy: were tremendous. A good, long encore followed, featuring some great blues numbers. All in all, a fine show.

This is not an opinion, this is a fact and to sign his name to the 06/07 review is a fine example of the low class cheese you would expect from a New Yorker.

: RESENDING/REVISED/CORRECTED:
Additional note about sisyphustracks.com (web radio to roll ye olde stones by): "Pushing Uphill" (June 10, 2-5 PM ET)--
featuring Lucinda's ESSENCE.
Mike (Westerfield) wrote back to say,
"Actually, if you haven't posted it yet, check that - I've decided to play the whole album, although it won't be end-to-end. Think I was a bit delirious earlier from lack of sleep. Had perhaps a four-hour nap and feel
much better, although I'll still sleep like a baby tonight, methinks.
Didn't buy it, by the way - was lucky enough to get it all off Gnutella literally on the day of release.
So - will simply have to cut off perhaps 5 of the "home" songs. There's only 5 or 6 Hartford tracks. I like the idea of multiple themes, and if you
somehow juxtapose the songs/themes it not only sounds more interesting, but people have less of a tendency to walk away when they get what they came for.
So: the entire album will be played, and you can print that - unless there's a 12th bonus track on Essence I'm unaware of. Is there??

Mike"

P.S. No 12th track mentioned on the package i have.

: last night's show was pretty lame. don't make us wait 1 hour after kasey chambers. joy and come to me baby is redundant in the sense that they are both extended band-jam -type songs. also, she DID NOT play big red sun or abandonded or night's too long or like a rose or passionate kisses. ONE of those would have been nice. but if you're only gonna play for 1.5 hours, i guess there will be fewer songs. last time i saw the stones, jagger [who turns 58 next month]ran around for 2.5 hours.

: I was at the 6/6 show at Roseland. Although a bit short and strangeley paced (50 minute show and 45 minute encore) I thought she seemed more at ease then she has been at past shows (particularly the "Car Wheels" tour at Tramps. I also though the band was pretty tight. I must say that as a venue The Roseland Ballroom is horrible. The acoustics are horrific. I would prefer any other venue in NYC.

: sixth time seeing Lucinda, and very disappointed, as were my three fellow fanatics. Her 55 minute wait after a dynamite Kasey Chambers set established the tone for a poorly paced concert. The new songs were better live than on the album, but sounded very formulaic. I think she is great, but I agree that the performance was superficial, and very importantly (at least to me) the band created no sparks, no tension, no risks, little reward. The brevity of the set, and lack of spontaneity, added to our frustration.
Hopefully, she will be better when she swings back to NYC in the fall.

: I thought Lucinda's show last nite at Roseland was fantastic. She started with familiar songs from Car Wheels to warm us up and then dove into the new material. I'm glad she gave such a long encore although the whole show was a little on the short side.

But I thought she was really confident and made the show a lot of fun with the variety of tunes she picked. Come back Lucina!!!! put on some more shows in NYC.

: Maybe comfortable + happy = complacent. While I feel that there were some definite high points last night, parts of the set, particularly some of the new material, seemed mailed in. Brevity was a definite problem too - if the 11:00 curfew was going to be observed, a shorter break after Kasey Chambers would have been in order. Maybe Lu had to run to catch Patti Smith.

ESSENCE will be the "first official CD-of-the-WeekKeep" but
please keep in mind that Lucinda is just one of three themes going on Sunday. He "probably won't play the entire album and ESSENCE tracks will be intermingling with
some songs by the late great John Hartford, a bunch of "home" songs maybe even Lucinda's wonderful "Crescent City" or "Lafayette" and possibly even Hazydavey's "Poison
City" . . . also featured on "Random Roots" (one of your ST's several listening options)along with several other CDs. Hope I got all this straight; if not, Mike, would you please post correction and feel free to post any future related news of our lady of the bayou? Thanks,

intermission/bus to baton rouge/envy the wind/car wheels/"delta blues with Bo"/get right with God/come to me baby (from howlin'wolf tribute); i might have missed one or two or jumbled the order, sorry if so
Lucinda seemed very upbeat & happy, complimented the band effusively. drums, bass keyboard, 3 guitars, gave more of a power-rock feel to some songs than I had been expecting, e.g., joy which had an extended jam with several solos I was struck by the power of the new songs, like are you down in concert, which is very funky and took the concert up a notch, IMO; sound was excellent!

: Couldn't disagree more about last night's show at Roseland in NYC. This was the fifth time I've seen Lucinda -- first time was at the Bottom Line back when she first toured with the "Lucinda Williams" record. And this time was the most comfortable and happy I've ever seen her on stage.

The only complaint, I suppose, was the shortness of the set (about one hour, then a half-hour to 40 minutes of encores).

I was definitely a happy employee when I left.

It sure is a perfect showcase for the band. It comes across like an early Elvis song in a way, but of course it's timeless. The liner notes on "Car Wheels" say it was written in '98. : Lucinda and the band sounded so good last night here in Minneapolis at First Avenue--sold out, standing room only, we stood all night, well, more accurately, we leaned on the railing all night--There are not many acts that would entice me to stand up for four hours straight, but you know Lucinda made it worthwhile. All those great songs, the band just sounding so good! I am a big Kenny Vaughan fan since his days playing guitar with the Sweethearts of the Rodeo. I met him back then and it's been so exciting to hear him play with Lucinda's band. I've heard them twice now in three months, they were here opening for Tom Petty in August. This show at a smaller venue was much more satisfying to a Lucinda fan like me. I got to hear and see so much better than at the big arena show in August. And the Lucinda fans were everywhere. We were all singing and stomping along and having a great time.

Kenny blew us away with some of his solos...I think it was the Howlin' Wolf song that they played as an encore when Kenny just went traveling on the guitar solo...he went some pretty adventurous places and the dynamics were amazing....don't know if Lucinda and the band reads this Dreambook, but if you do, thanks for a wonderful show and here's hoping that your energy and passion continue throughout this tour. It looks like you'll be really busy in October but those last few shows in the Bay Area are all going to be great fun, wonderful venues and I think the Bridge Shows have got the best line-ups possible, people like David Crosby will be there too...and Kenny, you are awesome! Thanks again.

: Lucinda turned us on last night in Concord, NH. She opened with "Pineolla." It wasn't but a few notes into the following "Metal Firecracker" when Lucinda proceeded to walk off the stage in an effort to get the sound right. "I feel like I'm in a fish bowl up here. I'm gonna make it up to you, folks." The first half dozen numbers were a bit muddled, but the pro-Lucinda crowd didn't seem to mind. Audience responds, "We're from NH, we don't know any better." Her voice in "Car Wheels", "Right On Time", "I Lost It", "2-Cool", and "Crescent City" did not come off as clear as I wished. At first I realized that the stage presence that many live performers have would not come naturally to her. But I was mistaken. The opening chords of "Drunken Angel" were hit perfectly, which began a string of numbers that was vintage Lucinda. The depth of her voice rang true with "Side of the Road", a repeat of "Car Wheels"(perfected this time - great tune), "Greenville", "Jackson", the beautiful "Sweet Old World", and SAWHWWT ("I can't stick around, I'm heading back south"). "Joy" and "Changed The Locks" were monumental. She would comment about each song and frequently would converse with the audience (intimate venue - 1,300). Her encore set included "Disgusted" (no offense taken), finishing with a blues tune, "Come to Me." She played for about 1:45 - but definitely was not long enough. I love her music, such that I can not stop listening. Did not hear "Passionate Kisses", "Big Red Sun", or anything off "Happy Woman Blues" (except "I Lost It"). Oh, well. Thanks for coming to NH, Lucinda. You're the best.

: Drei Jungs aus Good Old Germany. Wir haben Lucinda in einem kleinen Club in Frankfurt gesehen und gehört. Kaum Publikum - great Music - she blewd me away. Dann in London im Shepherd Bush Empire - It was so great.
Im November kommen wir nach N.Y. ins Roseland.
First time I heard Lu on a Norwegian Radio Station. Unbelieveable.
