For Immediate Release The Cure Donate Autographed Guitar to Aid in Death Row Inmate’s Defense Fund Alternative rock band joins the fight to free the West Memphis Three December 8th, 2007: San Francisco, Calif.— The Cure will be auctioning a customised Schecter RS-1000 acoustic guitar to raise money for the defense fund of three wrongfully-imprisoned Arkansas men. Damien Echols (who is on death row), Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley, Jr.—also known as the West Memphis Three (www.wm3.org) —were convicted for murdering three elementary school children in 1994. This special guitar was not only designed to lead singer and guitarist Robert Smith’s specifications—maple body with spruce top, maple and rosewood neck and specially designed white pearl moon and star inlays—but it was also used in the studio by the musician this year. The guitar is signed by all four-band members—Robert, Simon Gallup (bass), Jason Cooper (drums), and Porl Thompson (guitar); and features a unique Cure logo drawn by Thompson, who is responsible for the majority of the band’s artwork down the years. It also includes a “Free the West Memphis Three” message written by Smith. The auction will last for 14 days—from December 11 (Echols’s birthday) to December 25—one day for each year the West Memphis Three have spent behind bars. The starting bid for the instrument has been set at $999. “It is my hope that through Skeleton Key Auctions, both funds and awareness will be raised about the travesty perpetrated on these three innocent men,” said Anje Vela, president of Music4Life. “Cases like the West Memphis Three’s are a blemish to our justice system. I don´t believe for a second that these 3 guys did it, but regardless of who is guilty and who isn´t, the prejudice being displayed by some of the people involved is unbelievable. As a Norwegian, non-American citizen, it is hard to not to feel alienated and perhaps a bit prejudiced towards Americans in return. This is wrong, it´s all wrong. I have been in all corners of the US several times and by and large I like Americans, and I say that at a time when it´s actually pretty "in" not to like you guys, thanks to your goverment, take a trip outside the US and find out. But the fact is, I do like the US, at least the people in it i have met. So it´s just sad to see this kind of ruthless witchhunt going on in a country that is supposed to be so free and accomodating. I pity the people that have to endure these politician-made LIES. These 3 kids were without a doubt victims of a system under political and religious pressure, but of course everyone knows that already. | |

First of all...Everyone here is saying that the USA is full of closed minded people. I am an American, and I am not close-minded. If I were, then I would think WM3 were guilty. And I think they are innocent. I dress in black, read many different books, explored Wicca among other religions, listen to "different" music than most. I believe that the WM3 are, in fact, innocent. I have done my research, and have concluded, like most of you, that they were found guilty on false terms. Wicca(as Damien stated he was) is a peaceful 'religion'. The first rule is that you are not to harm ANYONE. The symbol(Right side up star in circle) that everyone thinks is the symbol of the devil, actually means protection against evil. Wiccans do not even believe in satan. I have been accused of many things simply because of the way I look. They always think we are the "bad" kids, when usually we are the more peaceful ones. We're (PAINT) doing a WM3 Benefit in Vancouver, Canada Feb. 1 with Threat From Outer Space, The Februarys, and Robert Wilson at the Railway Club. Myself, Fretless, singer of PAINT, I first came across the WM3 case in a course I took on crime and media in university. This was before I became a prisoner's rights activist, but was certainly one of the catalysts to leading me in the direction of socially-conscious music, and working with prisoners, helping to voice their concerns. Wrongful convictions are, without saying, a horrifying reality that can damage individuals and their families grossly. And the joke of it all is that come parole time, accepting responsibility is something parole boards will look for in making decisions to grant parole. This is why a lot of innocent people actually end up staying in prison longer (i.e. we had David Milgaard in Canada), because they naturally will NOT take responsibility for something they did NOT do -- thus, remaining in prison... It's a noble act, but something we all should be getting a little more riled up about -- because who knows, the next person to go to prison for something they didn't do might be you. It never ceases to amaze me how many people will draw conclusions from something they saw on T.V. Jeeze, isn't that exactly what we are against? Isn't that exactly the kind of thing that made the WM3 trials so unfair??? People pre-judging kids who wear black and read "underground" literature and listen to metal all because of crap they've seen or heard and never bothering to find out the truth about a culture that is different from theirs? And now looky here, all these people who support the "cause" (or at least 99.9999% of them) are basing their conclusions of innocence on two TV shows they watched, and a book written by a supporter. Judging people because they are weird back-country small-town hicks who must not know their ass from their albow, right? I'm ashamed to say I did the same thing after watching the two documentaries...it's hard not to. But read the documents people. There is a very good chance that these 3 are guilty. I don't know if they are or aren't, and I believe another trial is in order without the crap so-called "evidence" about heavy music/black clothes/cult gatherings, etc.. There is almost NO chance that the stepdad (Byers) is guilty. It appears to be impossible...check out the timeline and the interviews and the witness statements and the chronology of events. Shit you don't see in the documentaries. Learn the facts. There is a very good chance that the 3 guilty parties landed in the lap of the WMPD. Did the WMPD and prosecutors put way too much focus on those boys' social rebellion in order to get them convicted? Yes. Was Jessie M. interrogated for 12 hours before confessing? No. Was there a satanic cult, and were the murders part of a satanic ritual? No, IMO. Did Jessie M. confess again over a year later? Yes. Did he tell them about a whiskey bottle he smashed near the crime scene right after helping to commit the murders? Yes. Did the cops go and look for the shards of glass at that exact location, to try to corroborate his statement? Yes. Did they find it? Yes. Did it match the exact type of whiskey bottle Jessie said it would be? Yes. Is it possible that there is something fishy about this? Yes. Is it possible that there's nothing fishy about this? Yes. I have a feeling that if another trial is granted, the only people who will come out looking like uneducated and judgemental witch-hunters are those bashing on the West Memphis locals and grieving families and police department while supporting a cause they haven't even bothered to learn the facts about. Support a new trial? Yes! Free the WM3? Support the WM3? Try to rally together to get them out of prison? You might just know that Jessie Misskelly confessed again after his conviction...... with his attorney present. He not only offered more details about his own participation, but cooberating evidence that he was in fact at the scene. First I would like to say to anyone who has used the guestbook as a vehicle for self advertisment, or to impertenant questions that they should reevaluate their purpose on this planet. Second I would like to express my admiration for the supporters and non-supporters who had the courage to write their thoughts and views on such a public forum. On 05 May 1993 three boys- Christopher, Michael, and Stevie- lost their lives. Then a short time later Three young men- Jason, Jessie, and Damien- lost their freedom. This is a tragedy that rivals some of the greatest in modern history. While it frightens me that such an obvious witch trial could take place in our current judicial system, what terrifies me is that a vicious killer of children continues to walk free. It is my hope that the lies told the families of those young boys will be revealed and that those families will, like Christopher's true father, come to support efforts to free these three young for only in doing so can they hope to bring the murderer to justice. I send my love and support the victims and the families on both sides of this travesty. | |

I first saw the documentary "Paradise Lost" about 7 years ago. Since then, I've seen the attention and support given to this case grow tremendously - thank God! This is one of the most grotesque and obvious miscarriages of justice I personally have ever seen. Those I've heard say that the documentary was bias in favor of the defendants fail to note that Damien Echols was not exactly shown as a saint throughout the film. He was a wise cracking, sarcastic TEENAGER. A kid who probably never saw a movie camera in his life, then was suddenly the subject of one. To not be able to see this as the primary reason for some of his not-so-smart-given-the-circumstances answers during the trial is beyond me. There was a MULTITUDE of trumped up, absurd "evidence" which the jury of cult-paranoid, under-educated bumpkins believed. In addition to all that, here is a presiding judge who will never cop to this being utter and complete garbage. It's unfortunate that this case happened where it did. These guys (the WM3) need all the support we (musicians and beyond) can give them. Thanks for reading! We were all misfits like Damien, Jesse and Jason - isn't that how and why most of us picked up an instrument to begin with? It strikes me how very, very lucky we are not to have been railroaded by "good ol' boys" ourselves. I'm a hand drummer in Mississippi...it's a wonder some yardape hasn't already killed his slag's kids and framed me for it. Then again, I'm in my 30s...we owe so much to the sanity of music. | |
