Comments:"I need your help". I’m looking for your help with a request on Canadian sailors that served with the Canadian Navy and made the Ultimate Sacrifice in WW2.
I’m looking for pictures and any short bios of sailors that made the Ultimate Sacrifice in WW2 (1939 - 1945)?
A little background information on my request; I’m doing research for three books.
Book #1 - Royal Canadian Navy permanent force - 397 sailors made the ultimate sacrifice
Book #2 - Royal Canadian Navy Reserve (to be called up in emergency) - 237 sailors made the ultimate sacrifice
Book #3 - Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve (to be called up in emergency) - 1509 sailors made the ultimate sacrifice
World War two has been over for 65 years and we are about to see the passing of another generation. Within the next five years we will lose almost all our veterans who served in the Canadian Navy. These men and women served with the 2143 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice serving with the three naval groups.
Please do not hesitate to contact me. Regards! Bob D'Aoust, Waterloo (519)-886-1242

Guysborough's name appears there and I recall him speaking of it. I remember him saying he was very lucky and I believe it had something to do with his not being assigned to the ship on it's last voyage. My Dad's name was Tom Duke originally from Humboldt Saskatchewan.

Comments:I am married to the youngest son of George Lapp. During WW2
my husband's brother, John, was aboard the Guysborough when it was sunk by a Uboat. Allen was only 7 years old at the time, but the family is a large one, and of the four eldest sons, only John was lost. I have followed the stories of that time with great interest, as I have "inherited" the job of family historian. I met John's daughter, as his
wife had already passed on, and was able to give her the
many stories I had collected and some pictures as well.
We have a much treasured picture of John with some of his
crewmates on the deck of the Guysborough. I can only imagine what a horrific experience that must have been. Thank you for having this site on line... I will pass it
along to others in the family.

sincerely, Vicki Lapp

Comments:My grandfather Bert Drake was stationed on the HMCS Niobe in Halifax Harbour during the Halifax explosion of 1917. I have just spent an evening searching sites and have come up with many interesting details about the early navy and pictures of his ship. My grandmother and aunt also survived the explosion. My aunt is still alive today. I visited Halifax a few years ago so the citidel apparently where the navy ate meals and the maritime museum held special interest for me.

Comments:Thank you for your wonderful website. I left the navy in 1974 as an LSRM2 submariner (HMCS Rainbow) but will always be thankful for the training, the work and the sea and most especially to my many shipmates on Beacon Hill, James Bay, Saskatchewan, Columbia, Chaudiere and those I served with in Grilse and Rainbow.

My wife, Denyse, and I were honoured to visit Halifax this summer and spend many hours with Ray Souci on the Sacville and our visit to the Acadia.

We also visited Point Pleasant Park to pay respects to the Navy Memorial.

I was sorry that I could not arrange a visit to the dockyard and visit some of the ships and submarines in harbour but maybe next time.

We also visited the Haida in Hamilton and was given a wonderful tour of this Canadian hero.

If anyone wishes to correspond with me I would be happy to do so. My retired hours are well spend studying the history of Canada and our armed forces. I am constantly searching for old shipmates, photos and stories from all sources.

This invitation includes currently serving members as well. I try to follow there movements and am very proud of the new sailor generation.
