The riot at the Stevenage 1983 award ceremony might have started whilst I was fighting Rob Able. On the way home the ticket collector remarked on my swollen face, which I replied that he should see the other fella's face and promptly showed him my trophy...he wasn't to know it was for downhill racing!
I remember hassleing the ducks on the pond at Bewdsley (KIdderminster)Safari park, whilst we were in canoes, during an ESA round there. I also remember smearing someone's tent with margarine just before I left! So Rob if you ever see this I probably deserved the bloodied nose at Stevenage. LOL
What with flashing at women, whilst being driven in cars back to London from comps it was quite a period. There was certainly no better behaviour back at Harrow skatepark whilst back wth all the other lunatics...happy times!
Worked at Alpine Action until it finally closed, which was also great fun unless Derek decided it was time to beat you up.
I am still skating with some of the Harrow lot from back then...still good times. : )

I started skating in 77, and stopped about 82. Mainly at a purpose built park in Gillingham that later got taken over by the BMX-ers. Still got my G&S Fibreflex (minus it's well scarred grip-tape and eventually removed centre sticker (damn I should've left it battle-scarred alone) the board split an inch or two at the back after suffering too many flips and unprotected amatuer wheelies. I have Lazer Freestyles (5&1/2 inch I think?) and C65 light blue Kryptonics (white centres) that I shamefully coloured darker with marker pen as I recall?) I haven't skated since about 85 and I'd love to be able to smarten up my board again, even with just some new grip-tape, wheel bearings/spacers and find some bolts/cups & rubbers for the trucks...dunno how it became so dismantled all that time ago, but just to have it complete again and displayed amongst my other 70's cool items (trim phones/Revrods - who remembers them? etc') would be good. My best mate who lived up the road from me at the time had a shiny new 10" Alva with ACS 651's and fitted the same blue Kryp's as me..I think we got them for Christmas from the same place.

Great Site! Great memories! Only now nearing 40 do I look back to those wonderful days of care free innocence. Started skating in 1977 and continued well into my teens. Most of my time was spent at The Barn in Southwick just outside of Brighton - endless summer days bowl and pool riding. How I regret ever throwing away my board: Jeremy Henderson deck, Tracker Full Tracks and white Bones - they were the dogs! I wonder what Steve Kelner, Mark Baker and Phil Earl are doing now?

Way cool site Pete,
Skated back in the day, believe it or not in Monroe, Louisiana at the college stadium. 1974-1979. Picked up this great chick boarding back in the summer of 1977 in Panama City Beach, FL. Still have some cool pix of us w/ the board. All I have left is a 1975 Chessy Grentec, found in my mother's attic this past Christmas. All the wheels are shot. My rad boards went into the wind over the years, my younger brother and friends waisted them. If anyone knows where I can find some of the Grentec ball bearing wheels, let me know. Would like to rebuild and ride and then maybe get a better board of the era and do a few 360's.
Thanks again, Stephan

I had so many decks, but the ones i remember are Jason Jesse, Bonite Tony Hawk, Jeff Sims (the worst deck i had) usually rode on indies or gullwings with some really coned slimeballs or oj2's !!!! God i feel old. Im gonna buy another deck and just do some slideys and some small ollies for the rest of my days.

I'm not knocking the webmaster, but is the site ever going to get finished? Time i spose. How about a forum? Exchange views, advice etc with other 35+ year olds. Hehe. Anyone got a set of original Kryptonics preferably red or Alley Cats any colour they want to sell? I'm sure i saw the Alley's in blue once? Can only hope i spose!! Any 1 know what the equivelant modern wheels of the above would be? Sorry to ask so much, but where else can i ask about these things? The net is lacking on this memory lane nostalgia. Really needs a forum. I may be able to help out with one if required!! Lifes a bummer. i struggled to afford a set of kryptonics when i was a kid, I'd probably struggle to afford a set of 70's originals today!!!

great site. cant wait to see the rest. do you or anyone else remember flexello flames ? these are wheels from the late 70s made by my father at flexello casters & wheels in highworth, near swindon, wiltshire, england. i remember having loads at home, and all the local skaters wanting to buy sets(at discount prices !) unfortunatley over to years everything i ever had to do with skateboarding has gone. amazing what marraige does to a man !. including all my wheels. if i remember correctly flexello flames were quite a good wheel, but they didnt last long in manufacture. any adverts in your magazines ? i cant find anything on the net about them. i will endever to pump the old man for info and maybe source a set from a contact.

Hi Kev, I don't know if we ever met, but I was a local at the Rat house in '83 whilst I was visiting the UK from Australia for six months, I used to come across with the Nottingham boys mainly on the weekend, I was to young to drive and I remember the train sucked.
I still have some of the hand made stickers that either Pete Trevor or Lee Bryan gave me. They were great sessions and awesome times, Lee used to rip that place, I remember learning the variel boneless on that ramp.
I have a few shots from the ramp from those days.
Great memories,
Tony.

One of a VERY small number of UK (oldschool) sites that I have been able to find. Keep it up! Listen, where are all the people that used to skate? There must be other guys my age, in their 30s, who'd love to get back on The Board. Let us know if you are still skating (and where), then perhaps the rest of us can join in.
PS. some awsome stuff on the extreme sports channel if you haven't seen it. How someone produces a list of sites that us guys would enjoy?

What a big stinking load of skateboard shit.
Skateboarders are good, in-line skaters are gimps.
Long live the wheel, god save the wheel.
skate drunk and wear bruises like medals.
i used to have a vision gator. i covered the deck in whisky labels and did the grip tape over the top like the shape of a bottle of whiskey, in the middle as the label it had a sexy lady. 10 years on - I just got a new deck and dropped my old arse in for the first time last week. - on a 6 foot ramp. can you send me those green wheels, they are speaking to me. cheers.

Fantastic site, you have all my dream wheels. I'm currently riding my 78/79 BB John Sablosky with Cal Slalom trucks and Sims Snake Conicals. I'm going to build a new board so I can return mine to the wall (I can't see the point in damaging it). I've been offered some Bones Parkriders (my dream wheel back in the 70's). Am I going to find them as slow as my Sims? I've found I ride much better with modern wheels because of speed (and the reduced effort in a half-pipe). I'll be building something like a Death Box Wentzle Ruml. With trackers and either the Bones or something like ABEC11 No Schoolzs. Advice anyone? Once again, great site, and great pack shots.

Great site, I look forward to seeing more updates. I was fortunate enough to be living and skating in Southern Calif. during the late seventies and early eighties. during this time I got to skate with some guys who wound up being pretty famous. I lived close to Santa Barbara where the Sims team was from. Our area shops were the first to have Sims merchandise. Yes the first Sims wheels did smell like some kind of Cranberry/Cherry smell. I still ride a little as now my son has taken up skateboarding. I might as well pass it on. The board I rode during the late seventies was a Wes H Dogtown model with tracker mid tracks and the green Sims Snakes which were the best wheels ever, not this new hard wheel crap of today. Skateboarding has lost its mellow edge that it once had...sorry it is gone...preserved by few. Enjoy your ride...skate on!

I'm currently in plaster having broken my wrist on the mini-ramp at Hartlepool (not having skated for 20 or so years!), so I was delighted to find your site after trawling through an awful lot of old skool dross that's out there on t'internet! It's great to see a site put together with so much love and care (and knowledge) so please keep going! I'm 36 and going through a major nostalgia trip at the moment. Unfortunately I no longer have any of the gear I used in the 70's and 80's (including a Dogtown Jim Muir bought from Tynemouth Plaza skatepark, Trackers, Kryptonic conicals, a Surrey Skateboards pig deck, etc), but I do have the pics of me in the full pipe at Plymouth from summer holidays long ago to keep the memories alive! Can't wait for your magazine collection to go up as well. Oh well, back to do Google searches for Dread decks, John Sablosky, Tynemouth Plaza and the Mere pool at Scarborough :)
