Tina has been including me in her email "Photoblasts" which is very nice. So I've been looking at the photos of your trip and when I saw a link to Maggie, thought I'd click on and see what was what...Must say I loved the introductory music. It's a famous piece of course and I know it well but can't remember the name of it. Is it by Bach? It was also interesting reading about your trip on the Strathnaver. It was a similar experience for me but different too, as I had left home for the first time and I was FREE, and Independent, and just 22 years old, so, very exciting! When we landed at Steamer Point in Aden, I hitch-hiked to Crater City and the first car that stopped was driven by the Reuter's News correspondent who took me to his home to meet his wife and have a glass of cold orange. When we docked in Columbo in what was then Ceylon, I set off to hitch hike to an old colonial beach resort called Mt Lavinia. The first car that stopped was driven by the Professor of English at the University, he took me there but we called at his house, so I could meet his wife, have a cold drink, and so he could show me his photos of his student days in Brighton. On board ship there were lots of families but there was a group of us singles in our early 20's so every night was party time. Well I must say it was a nice experience meeting you, Tina and Bill. I'm looking forward to seeing more photographs of the trip. And I'll be writing to Tina and Bill in due course. I expect Tina's really busy sorting out the pictures. Since you were here in Langwathby, the weather has been very extreme. First we had this prolonged heatwave with temperatures around 30 C. Then, this last week or so, torrential downpours, and down to 18 C. Another heatwave has started today. My next trip is to Scotland in September - going fishing to Carradale near Campbelltown on the Mull of Kintyre. (Remember the Paul McCartney hit song?) Well, I must get on with some paperwork now. I've been friends of your sister Tina for several years and she just sent us the web page you made for your new grandson, Joshua.....What a darling boy!! Congratulation!! I have a new granddaughter, born Dec. 12, 2003 so I know how estatic you're feeling right now.*S* And my new granddaughter's mommie's birthday is Feb. 26th too. the 70's and love his music more and more as time goes by. I've seen Neil in concert about 35 times, met him in Pitts- burgh, and have met many wonderful people in the Diamond world. However, since becoming a grandmother 9 years ago, I've lost touch with everyone. I now have 5 grandchildren and a job, so I have very little free time. | Comments: | Hello, my name is Stephen Yarrow. I migrated to Australia as a 9 year old boy with my family aboard the Stathaird in 1960. I have ended up in journalism and have written a number of books, mainly of an historical nature. I am about to commence a new project, which I intend calling "Ten Pound Aussies" about what it was like to migrate as a child to Australia from Europe by ship. Factually based, it will focus on the period after World War II until the time aircraft took over. The aspects I feel to cover include what led people to migrate, memories of the trip, the first recollections, the general reaction to life in Australia, what happened when they got here, where they went and what kind of life they ended up making for themselves.
I intend to base around half of the book on my own experiences and reactions, but would like the other half to be made up of a chapter each on other people's experiences to give a fuller view of the times and events encountered by migrant children of that time. I have been on the net and I saw that you migrated by ship during the period I will be covering and wondered if you would consider contributing towards a chapter in the book. The majority of correspondence could take place by email and to assist in providing the information required, I would send you a list of questions for you to answer at your leisure, perhaps with input from other family members or people who travelled with you. If you wished to cover aspects not included by my questions, I would be happy to include this. I'd write the final text from the material you submit and would give you the right to proof and amend the final copy prior to publishing. If photos are avai lable, these would be good to illustrate each chapter, but I would not require them at this early stage. I look forward to hearing from you as to whether or not you would be interested in being a part of this project.
