Comments:Dear Buster

I used to live in Sheffield and my parents knew the man's mother. She was much older than the 16 you guessed she must be in Buster's Diaries. I do hope you are keeping well. I'm not sure if we can trust the man to tell us when (to coin a phrase) you go to that great big kennel in the sky. He may think this would be too much of a shock to bear.

Much love to you

Comments:Dear Buster -

I cannot begin to tell you how much joy your books have given me - I reread them regularly. After recommending your books to a friend tonight, I decided that I really wanted to see a more recent photo of you and I was delighted to find your website!

I must say that many of your observations and your general outlook on life remind me of one of the dogs that live with me; in many ways, Willie could be your American counterpart. But you are, of course, very much your own dog - the strength of your unique personality is clear in your writing.

You are a dog that has brought a great deal of joy into any number of lives, and that is, I think, one of the most important things that anyone, human or canine, can do. I send you the best of all possible wishes from the States, and, should I ever have the chance to, say, sit near you at a book signing, I would most certainly pass you a sandwich or some crisps when no one was looking. Sawdust balls are good for you, but it's important to be reminded of just how special you are sometimes.

Again, many thanks and heartfelt best wishes,
- Carol

Are you still alive and well? I hope so. You must be 13 or 14 by now. I am really enjoying your book which a friend saw and gave me because of my love of dogs. It is a hilarious account of your adventures. My dog Genny (a shaggy terrier/bearded collie mix)loves to eat things off of the street as well, but so far, thank God, she has not ingested any plastic bags. Too bad about that royal goose, but I agree with your owner (the Lord), the Queen should not have clipped it wings so it could not escape.
Best wishes,

Comments:Hallo Buster, I am a year old and have been living at my present luxury kenned since February having turned my nose up at the opportunity to train as a sniffer dog. My man is very receptive to training - I get to lie on the floor with my head on a cushion, go out upon request, chew up items of my choice and shove him out of the way as and when necessary. The Old Bat on the other hand is not quite such a pushover and I find myself sitting to order and refraining from climbing onto her knee. I share my accommodation with a 10 year old Labrador called April - which is odd as she was born in March. She is much smaller than me but like all females thinks she's boss. I share your rather mundane diet of sawdust balls but am able to vary it when the Old Bat takes me to visit her horses - I am very partial to grass either fresh or in it's recycled form. The Old Bat has formed a fan club for you on Facebook - it's called the Buster Hattersley Appreciation Society - she has no imagination or literary flair like yourself I'm afraid. April and I are listed on your fanbase and hope to be joined by many more of your canine admirers.

Kindest regards, woofs and wags

Like you I too was addressless before I adopted my woman (& like your man she has some strange habits!!)although I am a full bred staffie & not lucky enough to have GSD genes like you, we have so much in common I've decided to make you my mentor and will try to carry on the mayhem you caused when you were younger. I work in Pall Mall and some years ago I used to see you and the Man passing by Buckingham Palace in the morning, as I walked from Victoria. I guess you cannot go to Green Park now because of the Royal Goose episode...

I even talked to you briefly one morning: I did not know how to address the Man (Mr Hattersley ? Lord Hattersley ? Your Lorship ???) so I got a bit nervous and just mumbled that I loved your book. You actually barked at me and I remember saying 'It's allright Buster, I know you are a nice dog, really'.

Anyway, I am sending you lots of hugs and scratches under the chin and ears. Love, Brigitte

I am trying to get in touch with the writer of your many stories. Though I have not read them I am ordering the books and others written by Roy Hattersley. Roy is a distant relative. After Bernice Brelsford died from Nixon, Texas ( the family came from Sheffield in 1880) I became more interested in my family tree. My mother said we had a distant relative in Parliament at one time and going back to the family tree I see the Rippons, Adams and Enid Hattersley who had one son, Roy. We have relatives Bill Ixer and wife Gerry of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England who have visited in Texas in the past. I would love to contact Roy and maybe at some time before I die get to meet him. How do I get in touch with him? Cynthia Yelderman Squires (grandmother was Aline Rippon Marsh)

Comments:Hi Buster, Mum read your Secret Diaries and was laughing the whole time. I read it - I don't understand why she laughed, this is very serious reading! I'm also 11 (or so my Humans think as I was a stray and it is a bit unknown). I have been with my Humans 9+ years and we now live in Aberdeenshire which I say is a doggie paradise and on our walks I can find all sorts of outside treasures and perfume to put behind my ears (Deer and Geese Poo are just fab). Mum has been taking dogs in when their humans go on holiday since last year. What a life I am leading! this week it has been a whippet and a greyhound (Little and Large), later on today a lab arrives (Mum calls her Miss Sunshine, I call her Miss Demented) then tomorrow there will be Bradley the Collie, a bird chaser. And it goes on and on. I think I deserve a gold medal for letting all these dogs perch themselves on My sofas, some of them even come on My human bed! (sorry Buster I claimed the Human bed very soon after my arrival - the bliss you are missing boy). As to being in the car, Mum has given up a long time ago to attempt to put a harness on me as dealing with my acrobatics was just too much! I like to be in the front passenger seat, the others fit in where they want except Millie the Golden Retriever who always pushes her way to be there first. And she is stubborn, so I give up and use the back seat. Last week, Mum managed to reverse My car into the garden wall. The wall is OK don't you worry, the bumper needs serious plastic surgery not that this bothers me. I am a black bits of this and bits of that (the best breed of course) collie size, with a blue tongue which means that somewhere along the line there has been a chow. I was of course very underweight when I was rescued but over the years I have grown. Mum blames it on the castration (good for you Mum) and it has nothing to do with the fact that I looooove food. Mum says that I am perfect but maybe my head is a bit too small for the rest of my body. No-one is allowed to criticise me in any way in front of my Mum (especially not Dad) and if anyone dares, my Mum shows her teeth. My Humans do go on holiday, but only because Mum says that she has to put Dad first now and then but she refuses to go away for more than one week. Quite right too! I am on DoggySnaps and my kennel is "tamy", in case you were curious to see my very handsome looks. I have trained my Humans very well and of course I let Mum believe that she has full control of me, Dad has no control at all... bless. Barking, like you, has to be my best talent, and it is not a hidden one! And I practise several times a day. One of our posties is scared of dogs (can't understand why) so you should see his face when we have several K9 visitors, it is real fun! Have a fun yappy day Buster, create chaos where you can, surely there must be curtains that need to be pulled down for dusting. All the best, waggy tail to you and all that goes with it. Hamish

Dear Buster,

How are you? I hope you are very well. My name is Ching Yi Tsai and I am from Taiwan. I have studied in London for two years and now I am currently studying in the South of France. I write this letter to say that I am your fan, and I was a fan from the moment I started to read your diaries. More importantly I would like to introduce you to the people in Taiwan.

Two years ago I was given your book called “BUSTER’S DIARIES” as a Christmas present from my landlord in London. I carry it with me and read it anytime I wish. I love the book and the way your best friend (I think) Mr. Hattersley helped you to express and understand yourself. It is very warming and always puts a smile on my face. In fact I find it quite hard not to laugh over some points.

About two months ago, I wondered why you only had one diary. For some reason I wanted to know more about you. Immediately I went surfing on the internet. You can’t imagine how excited I was to find your website and the new “SECRET DIARIES”. Also your first book had been translated into several languages apart from Mandarin. That was a surprise for me. However, if it is possible to get permission from you I would like to translate your DIARIES into Mandarin. I would like to do it to share my joy with more people in Taiwan.

If you need more information about me please do not hesitate to contact me.

P.S: I read your book before going to bed every night now because I will know about your secret a little bit more.

Keep Healthy and Happy

I just got through the 2nd installment of Buster's diaries. What a great read they were! Rolling round on his back just for the joy of it in the morning is one of Bryn's favourite activities and he established his bedroom rights in much the same way Buster did!

I'm thankful you found each other - the sheer pleasure of the friendship between man and dog (sorry Buster) leaps out from every page.

Keep enjoying each other,

Comments:Hi Buster,I was wondering if you would like to support the plight of your cousins over the water in the republic of Ireland who have recently been tarred with a very black brush indeed....My name is Rumpole and I am a white staffie with a jaunty black patch on my eye-my woman is Fiona-herself an Irish colleen and thats where i heard of the plight of my cousins on our recent holidays to the lovely ireland.Aparently the irish goverment have taken it upon themselves to ban our clan(namely staffies)from council properties and eventually from all public places in the republic-not just our breed but 10 others as well as part of the dangerous dog act-the ban began in june with immediate effect and all owners were given a period to rehome the cousin or the council would destroy them-I jest not!!!!there is a canine holocost occuring over the sea as we bark...I have been on to my rescuer Barbara Green of the northwest staffie rescue who is very alarmed as she has already been swamped with homeless waifs and strays since the recent dog attacks in the press(I know they're not one of us but people panic and confuse us with the breed)so if you could get your man to google all staffie related news items on RTE ireland I'm sure he'll be as alarmed as we are....there is an online petition which needs a lot of paw prints here is the link http://www.PetitionOnline.com/anvil999/ It is important that us staffies stick together as Ireland is very influenced by the EU and has carbon copied Germanys dog ban list which is very restrictive of us staffies and in the current political climate with the new constitution being slipped in the back door by our goverment how long before irelands rules become our new laws-its the thin end of the wedge methinks!!!remember the kick a staffie and we all limp!!!!-by the way i loved all your books and you sound like my sort of dog.If your man needs any further info on supporting the cousins in Ireland I'm sure Fiona would be glad to get in touch-she and her man Chris are staffie mad and fully support the staffie rescue I met them at-and do you know what they're not a bad lot, just a bit mean with the pigs ears occasionly and they mention a strange word, diet,???? every now and again but on the whole good eggs....take care Buster old boy.woofs and licks Rumpole.

I just wanted to say that I loved your book and am going to get your new one.

I used to have a dog that looked just like you, he was called Jerry but sadly he died last year. I also have a border collie called Annie.

Comments:Dear Buster

Ever since I saw you one Sunday morning in Derbyshire a few weeks ago, as you were taking the Man for a walk, I've wanted to read your diaries. I have just finished reading Busters Secret Diaries and found them a fascinating read - you do have to put up with a lot! As I am the editor of a cassette magazine for the blind (the Mansfield & Ashfield Echo), I wondered if you might give me permission to read a couple of short excerpts - no more than 4 pages in all -from the second volume as part of one edition of our fortnightly audio publication. I am sure that our listeners would be very glad to hear about your adventures and might possibly buy the complete audiobook.
I look forward to hearing from you - hope you are well and still enjoying your biscuits!

Best wishes
Bill

Comments:Hello Buster and Roy,
I have just managed to buy your new book after much searching, it was the last on the shelf. I could not wait to get home to start it, took it to bed read some went to sleep and woke at 3am to read some more, I love the humour I am sure my dog Oscar must be thinking the same thoughts he lives with my Father "The Man" Oscar is his best friend.
Keep writting PLEASE.

Comments:Dear Buster,
Thank-you very much for the picture - I love it! I am currently looking for a double sided frame for it so I can place it with pride on my desk. You are right of course - who wouldn't want a picture of you!! Pass on my thanks to Mrs Hattersley too as I have a feeling she helped you post it - how else would you reach the letter box?
Much love & biscuits,
Beth x
