Comments:Dear Sir,
I read your account of Buster and it touched me greatly. Your obvious attachment to him was evident. I recently had to make that fateful decision with my dog Tinker who was 15 years and 9 months and now feel so empty and lonely.
You have taken the plunge and immediately rescued another dog. I do not think I am ready for that.
I wish you and your dog many years of happiness.
With very kind regards

You have made me shed tears twice in the past year! Once, when I read your comments in the Daily Mail when Buster passed away, such lovely words about the wonderful relationship you had with Buster.

Then, for the second time, yesterday I read about your new companion, Jakie and once again my eyes filled with tears. You have a wonderful way with words that touched me deeply. I have read all of Buster's books and do hope that Jakie also has similar writing skills.

Best wishes to you and Jakie,

So sorry to hear about the loss of Buster. Have always followed your stories about him through the press.

Hope you are well, it has been an awful long time since we had any contact - I know you keep in touch with my mum around Christmas time.

If you are ever up in the Yorkshire area you should get in touch. Living in Richmond in the Dales now and due to get married this August. Would be nice to hear from you and keep in touch from time to time.

Please note: Sir Isaac Newton was a cat lover and owned several. He is responsible for inventing the cat flap!
'The Cat That Walked by Himself' was written by Rudyard Kipling, not TS Eliot.

These are but two things that prove that cat lovers are indeed more intelligent than dog owners!

If you wish to gain a greater understanding of the benefits of cat ownership, one of which is most definitely companionship. please read Your Cat magazine.

Comments:My dear Mr. Hattersley,

I just learned of Buster's passing from the note on your website. Please accept my most sincere condolences on your loss. I've had your audiobook, "Buster's Diaries," on my iPod for some years now, and I have enjoyed listening to Buster's adventures several times. Having just finished listening to it again yesterday, I went online to look for recent pictures of the "cheery chap" who so charmingly captures my imagination. That's when I happened upon your site and learned of Buster's recent passing.

Every page of "Buster's Diaries" is informed by the unconditional love you felt for Buster, and I believe that you will agree with me when I say that feeling that sort of unreserved adoration for another creature is one of the very best parts of sharing life with a good dog.

I am certain that Buster is much missed by you and your family, so I hope it gives you some small solace to know that many, many people like me are out here admiring his plucky disposition and chuckling about his hilarious antics. Thanks to your heartfelt journals, Buster lives on vividly in our imaginations.

Kind regards,

(Arthur Miller) took me to an awards ceremony ... ten minutes after the proceedings began, the previously empty seat on my right was noisily occupied by a latecomer .... Miller, on my left, lent across me and said: "Of course you know Ed Albee ..." It took me some minutes to adjust to the thought that I was sitting between two of the great playwrights of the age.

I don't know that I would have adjusted any sooner. All the Best!

Comments:Dear Mr Hattersley,

I am so sorry to hear that Buster is no longer with you, he seems to have had a very long and happy life.

I read in your article in the Mail on the 11th January that you are starting the search for your new companion, it is always I feel the greatest compliment to our dogs who are no longer with us that we find another companion after they are no longer with us.

I volunteer for a rescue called Rescue Remedies which is based in Surrey. If you are looking for a cross breed terrier or a staffie please have a quick look at the link above. There are some amazing dogs waiting here in kennels for their forever home.

The rescue is small and very underfunded, the lady who runs it does so at huge personal cost and the dogs are amazingly well looked after. Rescue Remedies takes on the dogs who have generally been turned away from other rescues, they have gorgeous personalities and none of them have huge issues. It is generallly just because they are misfits, either because they are staffies or because they are funny looking terriers.

I have adopted one of these funny looking dogs myself recently after becoming a failed fosterer.

I wish you all the luck in the world in finding your new friend.

Best wishes
Olivia

Comments:Dear Buster
The finest tribute a dog could ever have was given by your man when he said that all he wanted for Christmas was his dog back. It was the most moving thing I heard all year. Over the years I have lost a number of beloved dogs. Mostly, they have been greyhounds - wonderful dogs I would heartily recommend to your master as so many are in need of loving homes. They can never take your place of course, but they are placid, loyal, devoted and utterly loving and could help heal his heart now that you have had to leave him.

When my first greyhound died, a friend sent me a passage from an article he had read somewhere entitled "Where shall I bury my dog". It is quite a long piece but I would like to quote the end of it hoping your man may read it and be comforted: In answer to "where shall I bury my dog?" the author wrote: "There is one best place to bury a dog. If you bury him in this spot he will come to you when you call - come to you over the frontiers of death and down the well remembered path to your side again. And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel, they shall not growl at him nor resent his coming, for he belongs there. People may scoff at you who see no slightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper, people who may never really have had a dog. Smile at them, for you know something that is hidden from them and well worth knowing. The one best place to bury a dog is in the heart of his master."

I don't know who wrote this but it has comforted me hugely each time I have lost a beloved hound. I hope it might comfort your master too.
A greyhound lover.

I hear you are trying to find a dog who will not remind you of Buster - perhaps you would consider a retired greyhound - most of them are very good at spelling and like to spend many hours resting and composing.

WHY CHOOSE A GREYHOUND ?
This graceful working dog in retirement will live only to
please you
Approximately 10,000 leave the track each year and only a small fraction of these are rehomed, many are put to sleep at two years old or younger – or suffer the fate of the Seaham dogs – a bolt in the head or worse and some suffer prolonged torture and abandonment.
Most greyhounds will be content with two half hour walks a day, a warm bed and someone to love in return for food and safety.
They walk well on the lead, making them ideal pets for the older person, and spend long periods asleep – they are, after all, resting athletes.
They shed little hair and take up little room, contrary to expectations
AND
They are addictive !!!

Comments:Dr. Mr. Hattersley,
I was SO VERY sorry to hear of dear Buster's passing last October (BBC News Magazine item on grieving for pets that I read today).
I am also the proud 'mum'of a wonderful, 14 year old Westie called Angus, and dread the day when I have to say goodbye. He is my first dog, but I also love my cats and have had to lose three of them over the last 20 years. I do indeed know the pain of coming back from the vet and having to bury my darling creatures in our garden. I had my cats longer than many of my colleagues had their children (my cats were 13/21 and 16). I cried when I read about your feeling that the world was going on, not realising that Buster had left us. Oh, how I have known that feeling! Luckily, the last time I was bereaved, my boss was a lovely and understanding Canadian Major who told me to take the time I needed. I am not religious, but DO believe that we will be with our beloved animals one day. I really do! I always light a candle in my garden at night when a precious one dies, or on the anniversary of their passing. I shall light one for Buster. The only small comfort I get, and I hope that you will too, is that Buster, and my animals, were loved and wanted all of their lives. I could also give them a peaceful end, in my arms and with my assurances and comfort at the end. So many out there are not loved, not wanted, and die alone and in pain. Buster was one of the lucky ones, and I hope you will know that one day when you meet him on the Rainbow Bridge.
My very best wishes to you, Mr. Hattersley! I hope the pain will pass into happy memories of a wonderful time spent together. You are an inspiration and it is wonderful not to feel alone in my love for my dear animals.
yours Sincerely,
Wenda Berentsen

Comments:I was sorry to hear about Buster and I do share your pain. Last July I lost my beloved Jack Russell Robbie. He had a lung problem and died on July 1st in the dreadful heat. He was receiving veterinary care and I had tried very hard to care for him and give him all the care he needed. He had an awful death really, but he died in my arms so he was with me to the end. I felt terrible that I seemed to be more in grief over his death than my own elderly mum who had died the year before. I felt somehow I had let Robbie down, but I know I did all I could for him.
You miss the little things they get up to! Looking back, Robbie was more inteligent than I gav e him credit for, he never got into trouble but he was full of life and mischievousness.

So sadly missed, but I am now to have another Jack Russell, he wont replace Robbie, he'll just be different.

I thank you Roy for expressing how much you loved Buster, it is so painful to loose a pet.

I have just read and been most touched by your article in todays daily mail about your dog Buster. Having three myself, i can whole heartedly understand your affection and loss. Actually i have 9 dogs here at home just now as Honey has delivered a litter of brindle staffie cross puppies which are adorable and reminded me of the great buster himself. Will you replace him? Its hard to live without a canine companion. I ask because i have two bitches in need of good homes and should you think about it, i'd be delighted to let you have one. I'd just need to know quite soon. I know they aren't pure staffies but one of them looks like she is. I hope this finds you well and a very happy new year to you. They were my life's blessings - happy, funny, loving, minds of their own, into mischief. I loved every minute with them. Now they are gone I am too elderly to care for another dog in the way I cared for my earlier dogs. My one bonus believe if or not is that I dream of them most nights. Three of them are buried at Poffley End Pets Cemetery. The beagle was taken away by the vet. In 1976 I did not know of Pets' cemeteries. In 2006 I had a serious operation and was unable to look after my 'twin' Yorkies so I asked the person who bred them if she would have them for a few weeks. She collected them on a Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday morning very early she rang me to say my smallest Yorkie had drowned in her pond. Can anyone realise my heartbreak. I was devastated and I will never get over the loss. I have many treasured memories and photographs. I have also recorded their antics in books.

CHARLIE

I could have called him Sabre, Rex or maybe King,
He was a German Sheppard - a regal name for him,
But no, I called him `Charlie`, he answered to his call,
Big and black and beautiful, the proudest dog of all.

He guarded home and family, till I came home from sea,
Devoted and so loyal, he nuzzled up to me,
Later on, in old age, his hips would give him pain,
Then taking of his tablets he’d up and run again.

Eventually they wouldn’t work, he flaked out on the lawn,
All night I kept him company, the pair of us forlorn,
It hurt too much to move him, we knew the end was nigh,
His love and comprehension looked me in the eye.

My pal, my friend, my trusted hound, I had to let you go,
That well remembered day - in May so long ago,
Nothing here on Earth, could make my sorrows drown,
That day I paid a local vet, to put old Charlie down.

I read your moving tribute in the Daily Mail and can fully understand your sadness at the passing of Buster.
My wife and I first saw our dog Jasper ten years ago at Hull Animal Welfare. He had been a stray and was in the home for 6 months.I must confess that at first I had my eye on another dog who kept bringing his pitifuly thin blanket to me but my wife was adament that Jasper (his name was Drifter then) was the one for us.
We arranged for the trust to bring Jasper to our house so they could check the garden. The first thing he did when he came through the front door was to cock his leg up my sofa!!Wwhat a way to announce yourself!!
Anyway over the past years Jasper has brought much love and fun into our house and we have taken a second Border Collie cross into the fold.
Jasper is entering his twilight years now and we all dread the day he finally goes to that kennel in the sky.
I know that we will be heartbroken but nothing will take away the memories we have of him

Comments:A Friend Died Today

No more a bone to chew on
No more lazing in the midday sun
The empty basket lies cold and still
Photographs sitting on the window sill

It's only a dog I hear them say
As death comes to take my friend away
Only a dog well maybe
But a dog that wanted to be with me

To share my days and nights of life
To comfort me in all my strife
To be my sadness to be my joy
To take me back to being a boy

It's only a dog I hear them say
But give me my dog back anyway

RIP Buster

Comments:I have just read the article in The Mail telling of your loss at Busters death, and what he meant to you. I have written a reply but they dont often get printed.

Thank you Mr Hattersley for loving a wonderful crossbreed stray like Buster. I live near Prague and also have a similar, but Spanish dog, who is now 6 years old called Suzi. I too dread the day I may need to call the vet, I nearly had to do it last year with my partners dog, but thankfully Betty stayed her last night on this earth with me, slept as usual on my bed, ate a wonderful breakfast and died in her Mummies arms after she returned from Canada 10 hours later. She had cancer.

Dogs fill our lives, we need them more than they need us. I hope your new dog gives you much pleasure, and I am sure Buster will watch over with love.

Comments:We were both so sad to read about the parting of Buster.
'Buster's Diaries' were a real joy and the book has been borrowed and enjoyed by many of our dog owning friends - hence it is a well worn version of the book that sits on the shelf. It will be a permanent reminder of what a very special relationship you shared - remember the happy times and what laughter and pleasure you both brought to so many people.

So Sorry to read about Buster - Let me tell you about Charlie

HE`S BURIED BY THE GREENHOUSE

He’s buried by the greenhouse - on his grave are flowers,
A family pet was Charlie, the memories are ours,
No more lead hanging down, by the kitchen door,
Or metal bowl of water, waiting on the floor,

No more friendly greeting, wagging of the tail,
Or barking at the postman, delivering the mail,
No more grinding jaw, gnawing bones of pork,
Or spinning in delight, at mention of a walk.

No more resting nose, gently on my knee,
Or limpid shining eyes, gazing up at me,
No more pleasant games, playing with a ball,
Or bounding back toward us, answering his call.

No more wet and smelly, after being in the rain,
Or the look of triumph, when he chased the cat again,
No more country strolls, sniffing round for hours,
He’s buried by the greenhouse now, underneath the flowers.
