Recuerdo haberle hecho chistes a mi madre. Cuando fuí a ITALIA vi que no era para chistes ,ya que por lo menos tres palazzos y castellos eran de MALASPINA.

text:"...I was called Corrado Malaspina; I am not the ancient, but from him I am descended; to mine own I bore the love which here is refined." --Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy, Purgatory VIII. *Corrado, of the great Guelph family of the Malaspina, lords of the Lunigiana, a wide district between Genoa and Pisa. *The old "(the ancient)" Corrado Malaspina was the husband of Constance, the sister of King Manfred. He died about the middle of the thirteenth century. The second Corrado was his grandson. The old Marchese Corrado Malaspina of Mulazzo in the Lunigiana, Italy started the Spino Secco branch, the branch of the Malaspina from which Marchese Alessandro (AKA Alejandro, Alexandro) Malaspina is descended. He was also born in Mulazzo. Dante's Tower, where Dante lived and wrote The Divine Comedy, still exists in the Malaspina Castle of Mulazzo, Italy. Below it are three museums, one for Marchese Alessandro Malaspina's accomplishments and others for history of the Noble Malaspina Family.

text:Hello! My mother is Beatriz Malaspina, her father Giani Malaspina. When he was alive, my grandfather had a book that traced our branch of the Malaspinas back to the 1100s, including a pope (although this was back in the days of really corrupt popes that lasted a few years at the most). The book was never found after his passing; my mother suspects it is in her younger brother's house, but since my uncle passed away a couple of years ago, we'll probably never find it again. Our family origins are in the Piedmont area of Italy, and when my mother traveled there, she discovered that the title of Comte had been given to my many-times great grandfather, Alessandro Malaspina, who had helped explore South American and specifically Peru for Italy. I have a book about him packed somewhere in my office; sadly, even though my grandfather gave it into my hands as the oldest child of his oldest child, I have never had the opportunity to read it. Supposedly the title has passed down to my mother, although my aunt Rosa claims she is Comtesa because her father was the one who inherited the Comte title. This of course is not possible, since her father was my grandfather's younger brother. The title is of course an empty one, no lands or property attached to them at this point in time; possibly there were never any lands or properties. If there were, I assume they were forfeit a long time ago, as Alessandro chose to remain in Peru, where the Malaspina family flourishes... all the Malaspinas in Lima are related to me. Of course, I am more interested in learning about how we date back to the Piedmont area and the nobility back then. My mother was given the crest and arms of the Malaspina comte, which she had etched in her entire crystal service, but this is the limit of my knowledge of the Malaspinas, other than I suppose I will someday inherit the title of Comtesa.

I'm Uliana Malaspina of the Noble Malaspina Dynasty & the Marchese Malaspina.Fun Facts-Costanza Malaspina is Lady Diana's 17th great grandmother. Over 160 Malaspina Castles existed in the Lunigiana alone. Prince Alberico Cybo-malaspina & Princess Ricciarda Cybo-Malaspina ruled Massa & Carrara in the Malaspina Castle & Malaspina Palace. Her descendant, Princess Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina of Modena & Carrara, was also Duchess of Massa & did much for Art. A descendant of Her is the current King of Spain,Juan Carlos I of Spain. (Juan Carlos de Borbon y Borbon-Dos Sicilias). The Malaspina Family owned the Marble Quarry in Carrara where Michaelangelo got his marble. Princess Maria Beatrice Malaspina d'Este (daughter of Princess Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina)married Empress Maria Teresa Habsburg of Austria's 4th son, Archduke Ferdinand. This created the House of Austria-Este, a branch of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine which ruled Modena(1814-1859). Queen Marie Antoinette of France was the sister of Archduke Ferdinand Habsburg of Austria & the sister-in-law of Princess Maria Beatrice Malaspina d'Este. Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte I of France is descendant of Apollonia Malaspina & used the "Malaspina Coat-of-Arms". The Malaspina are blood relations of the Grimaldi, Doria, and Visconti families. Marchese Alessandro Malaspina(AKA Alejandro & Alexandro Malaspina) was not only a Navigator and Explorer, but also a Philosopher who searched for Truth and Beauty.Until next time-Ciao. I notice too that our link to the best Italian site no longer works. We will try to fix this as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you are tracing your family history, you might go to http://www.sardimpex.com. You will need to register (which may require you to pretend to live in Italy), but it will be worthwhile. I should also add that there are many Alessandros in the family. The navigator whose life we celebrate in our website had two brothers only: Luigi and Azzo Giacinto, both of whom lived and died in Italy.
