Mamie, I am lonesome without you dropping by the Dreambook...I woke up thinking about you this morning, so I scurried here like a little chipmunk to post a note.. It's good to see some familiar faces here in the Saloon...Patticatt, I think we should throw a bash in here soon and catch up...thanks for thinking of me...I've been feeling off and on good since April...I had some tests done, white blood count was higher than normal..and I discovered that I have 2 cysts on my liver .but at least my ass is not on backwards which is a good thing....It's better to laugh about these things....... | Comments: | mamie, a quick note to wish you, your family and the book gang a happy 4th of july! my wife and i saw a free concert by one of my favorite groups of the 60's and 70's, the grass roots! a california band, they played for over an hour hits like lets' live for today, temptation eyes, sooner or later, midnight confessions, etc. how do your male neighbors stay sane with a knockout like you walking around? i have in addition to my wife, three other sexy looking women on my block and i confess, i must look at them when i see them and in the hot weather, they don't wear too much.the republican party is trying to peck away at the democrats, but i don't know if america can ever regain its economic might we once had in the 50's, 60's and 80's. huge deficits and ever growing foreign competition is making it tough. love bill. |

I just watched a program where you discussed beauty, ageing, sex appeal, etc. and I was mightily impressed by what you had to say. You're empirical proof that youth is wasted amongst the young. I recently turned 45 and went through something of a self induced crisis, thinking that my "best" years were behind me. Getting laid off from my job and not finding a comparative one did little to make me feel as if I weren't being left off the shelf. After a couple years of floundering in a job to simply pay the bills, I'm going back to university and am doing that degree I peripherally dreamed about doing (but couldn't, with such a high octane job). I have to say, you're nothing short of inspirational. Your take on ageing is an absolute revelation, especially when you take into account that when you very first got into the industry, "age" was a decidedly fixed aspect, and turning 30 then was considered to be middle aged! If there is any "secret" to being happy, I think it's the ability to be comfortable in your own skin and innately knowing what you are and aren't prepared to tolerate. I saw footage of Jane Fonda the other week reprising her workout regime - another 70 something who looks infinitely better than people half her age. I think you are absolutely correct in your view that "70 is the new 40". Thank you for proving that "age" is simply chronological and not a number you should define or limit yourself by. | Comments: | mamie, a late happy mothers' day and happy memorial day! i'm looking at your new internet photos and they are very attractive. this economy is very depressing. we're still in a recession, however, a few more quarters of heavy negative economic growth will put us in a depression. who's to blame? many economists say overall government policies for the past 20 years such as no energy policy and relaxed home mortgage underwriting standards to get as many americans into homes to stimulate economic growth which ultimately led to the collapse of fannie mae and freddie mac are to blame. however, bush is getting most of the blame and this has almost destroyed the republican party even in illinois where we recently impeached and indicted our democratic governor and the republicans are still almost helpless in the upcoming elections.hi to jo, felipe, sherry and hillary and patti, love bill. |

I look at your website every chance I get and needless to say, love it. But then that's easy, because I have always admired and respected you. Fun little story: You were the first "movie star" I ever met way back in the early 70's! You were traveling around the country doing your nightclub act and I had the good fortune to meet you in my old hometown of St. Louis. You were late coming in to the hotel where you were appearing that night and although I didn't want to bother you I could easily see that you were rushing to get to your dressing room. I was with a few friends and you were so sweet when you stopped and saw that I had a large pastel portrait of you that I had illustrated. You asked me if I was seeing your show but I was unable to get tickets in time. Without hesitation you told the man you were with to "...get tickets for this guy...and his friends too!" I guess already being a fan was great but that night it became obvious that I was mesmerized. Needless to say I thought that the show was terrific; you even took the extra effort to come over to me during the act and sang directly to me with a little wink. What can an impressionable 18 year-old think at that point? Later, with equal graciousness you invited us back to the dressing room after the show, gave me an autograph and took a few snapshots that I still have today. Over the years I have been lucky enough to see you perform or out and about for an event here in LA. I have always tried to update that old photo with newer ones and as I said it then and I say it now, "how could I have gotten older and you just got better!!" It's true, Mamie. One more thing: I was very close friends with Bill & Joe and over the years shared wonderful times with them; especially at Christmas. Joe was always giving me the latest news about you and shared his amazing collection. Bill never ceased to make us all laugh and what a terrific cook/host he was; you are right about that fudge! Joe is thriving but I'm sure a piece of his heart is gone. Mamie, what a sweet tribute you wrote about Bill; spot on. And finally...I continue to admire and respect you.
