I found it while looking up info on Babe Ruths pitching stats from the '16 WS, and decided since I liked that page so much, used it to verify two things I knew to be true, that the '18 series was played at Comiskey and the Star Spangled Banner was first sang during this beautiful set of games, tying together the way only this beautiful game can do, the 3 teams to go the longest without winning the series, Cubs, Sox red and white.

Comments:I am still awaiting to see the name of José de la Caridad Mendez, well known as Black Diamond, in the hall of fame, but he has to be well recognized first by negro leagues related web pages and books. Cristobal Torriente is supposed to become a hall of famer in the near future. Again his biography should be popularized because those present members of the Hall of Fame committees may not know Torriente at all. What Torriente and Mendez did even playing against Major Leagues teams is well documented in several books published in USA.

While checking to make sure the references had a live link and confirming your first initial for the citation, I found a minor glitch in your JavaScript forwarding from the http://pubweb.acns.nws.edu/~dmarasco/jrwrig.html page to the diamondangle.com. When the "auto-forward message" to thediamondangle.com, it gave me a error page because of an odd charater in the "marasco" part of the address somewhere. Once I deleted that character from the address, I had no problem locating the new site. I just thought I'd offer you a heads up so you can fix the problem. Looks like a great site. Maybe sometime when I'm not at work I'll have to surf around a bit more. Respectfully yours, Michele Barbin, production editor

Comments:I found this through BaseballPrimer.com,and read quite a
few of the pieces this afternoon at lunch. Very enjoyable;
thanks a lot. I would wonder, though, what the people at the
closing of Milwaukee's stadium who had *not* been at
Detroit's closing would have thought. I think they probably
had a great time, because they would never have seen that
ceremony before. You had. Had I gone to Detroit's, I
wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as you did, because I saw
the same ceremony in Baltimore when Memorial Stadium closed.
So don't give Detroit too many "originality" points. I don't
know who did it first, but it works well...and works well
everywhere, I would guess.

Thanks for all the work you put into this.

Comments:Mr. Marasco:

One additional point: I did indeed consider solar angles in
the orientation of Armour Field. As you know, the worst
case condition for a hitter in a field with this orientation
would be on June 21 at sunset (the summer solstice), when
the sun would be directly in the batters' eyes were home
plate oriented to the SOUTHEAST. This is why it would be
unacceptable to orient a field in such a manner. Orienting
home plate to the south (as in Armour Field) would not
create such a difficulty, particularly since even on June 21
the grandstand would put the batter in shadow. I hope this
clarifies....

Best regards,

Philip Bess

Comments:Dear Mr. Marasco:

I have just come across your review of CITY BASEBALL MAGIC, and wanted to thank you for your candid critique of Armour Field, notwithstanding my disagreement with several of your points. As someone who tries to be a thoughtful critic myself, I appreciate your own thoughtful criticism of my own work. I would like, however, to make the following points:

1) with respect to the proximity of the upper deck of Armour Field compared to the upper deck at the new Comiskey, I did not help myself by the sections illustrated on page 25 of CBM, which shows the one line (between first base and third base) along which the two upper decks are the same distance from the field. Beyond the bases, however, the upper deck at AF turns back toward the field, where the upper deck at new CP continues down almost parallel to the baselines. For a better understanding of just how much closer the upper deck seats are in Armour Field, look instead at the plan overlay of the two parks on the immediately preceding page.

2) That said, your point that the upper deck could have been better is certainly well taken. I made the same point myself in the Preface to the new (1999) edition of CBM (p.iii); and have tried to do better in the subsequent projects I have worked on. Contrary to the implications of your closing comment, I do indeed care about the ballpark experience itself, and I hope that care is evident in all of my work. If you are interested in a more recent view of my ballpark work, see my website at

www.thursdayarchitects.com

The Fenway Park proposal of August 2000, though schematic, is a better gauge of how I would think about the section of a new ballpark we're I working on one today.

3) I'm afraid that neither Robert Baade, nor myself, nor any other economist has yet figured out a way to keep MLB ticket prices low in the current economic structure of baseball. What architects CAN do (and what I try to do) is conceive smaller footprint ballparks as part of a more comprehensive urban design proposal that keeps ballpark construction costs lower, creates greater opportunities for economic development adjacent to the ballpark, and proposes ballparks that put fans closer to the action. When you figure out how to keep ticket prices down, please let us all know.

4) As to the necessary relationship between the quality of the ballpark experience and the quality of its adjacent neighborhood, I'm afraid we're just going to have to disagree. It's precisely the constraints provided by the network of streets and blocks that creates the intimacy of
traditional ballparks like Fenway and Wrigley, and makes possible a livable environment surrounding them. I find it somewhat short-sighted of you (at best) that you have no interest in the quality of the area around the baseball park.

5) Finally, I'm afraid I just can't help appearing academic; it's what I do. I never thought, however, that my status as an academic might in some people's eyes place me outside the very wide embrace of the True Church of Baseball. Surely, this cannot be what you were intending to suggest?

Our differences of opinion notwithstanding, all writers do appreciate being closely read; so thanks again for the review...

Best regards,

Philip Bess
