I am grabbing at straws and saw your family connected to Myron Howard West. He was born 12 Aug. 1812 in Logan Co. Ky., married in 1842 to Lavinia Howard and died Sept. 1860. Among their children was my great grandmother, Lavinia Jane West, who married Levi Whitfield Thomas. a civil war vet. I need to show a connection between Myron and his father, John to complete the collection for DAR membership for my daughter to win schoarships for my grand daughter. Can you help? My DAR coach says Myron was the eldest son and there may have been a will or property transfer of some type. Is there any way that you can help? Thaat is about the only weak link in my documentation and I have lineage all the way from Adam through Caine through Alfred the Great through Roger De LaWarr that defeated Henry 2 or something in 13th century and daughter Joan that married Thomas West,1st Baron De LaWarr to Thomas West 6th or 1`2th Baron, that saved the Jamestown colony and was 1st territorial governor of Virginia. the Delaware river and tribe was named for. | Comments: | I am updating my email but I do know Ernest Briley died in Walhalla, SC in 1968 or 1969. He was married to Dorothey Campbell from Greenville, SC from around 1942 to not sure but also was married to two other people at same time. He was born in VA and his father was killed by a train. They were O'Brileys in Ireland. Supposely Ernest was married to several women over the years and had 21 children or more. He lived in Virgina, North Carolina , South Carolina. Supposely he was married to one sister when he died with one child and was married to her sister in Charleston, SC where he had three children, Glenda, Billy and not sure of the other names. I visited them in 1963 because he was in a VA hospital and we notified he was dying which he did not. Memories of him , he had bunches of tattoos all over him. Supposely he was a boxer and in the army. I do not know this as a fact. My x husband had one sister named Elaine Newton and One sister Named Linda Black. they still live in Greenwood., SC. My daughter Dedi and Christy looked up a lot of facts about him, you can called them at 864-993-7465 or 323-2652. I have a son also named Maxey C Briley Jr. My children are hunting families and history because of medical problems. My oldest daughter had a brain aneursym in 2006 and they said it could have been from her fathers side. |

| Comments: | I'm the last Briley in a line extending from grandfather. Richard Martin Briley (an orphan raised by an aunt and uncle in Kentucky) in Civil War times, until his death in Montgomery, Louisiana in 1937. (No antecedents known.) Due to a local feud in KY, he left KY as a young man and worked in the American West for several years, making his way to LA after an altercation of some kind with authorities at a train station in Houston, TX.
Quickly reboarding his train, he made his way to Louisiana and eventually to the piney woods around Winnfield, LA, where he met and married Winnie Teagle, my grandmother, who descended from the original settlers of Jamestown,VA and from some leading families in South Carolina. Pa Briley, as he was known, became a contractor, building schools, Masonic lodges and bridges. The family eventually moved to Hargis, a community outlying Montgomery LA. By going to Google and looking up "Gaylord Briley" you can find information on a book or two I've written. (Use the quotes or otherwise get stuck on "Gaylord Industries" and "Briley Parkway" in Nashville.) NOTES: While visiting Ireland a few years ago with my daughter Rosalyn and her husband (for her to participate in a "harpers" competition) I examined the national telephone directory and found NO Brileys listed, nor anything like them. On one of my trips to Israel not long before that, a British Airways stewardess from Manchester, England, told me she knew several Brileys thereabouts, in the old "Beatles" home territory Ñ but nowhere else. But one winter I spent in Clear Lake City, Texas, where I rented a private mailbox, I discovered the man with the box directly under mine was a Briley. On a flight from Houston to San Antonio, he and I found ourselves sitting next to each other. He was an obviously successful businessman. ALSO, the last time I checked Census records (15 years ago) I found no more than about 6,500 or so BRILEYS listed in the USA. I'm sure there are more now. Myself, I'm Scotch-Irish, American Indian (late 1600's) and half Finlander. My daughter, doing research, found one history that seems to say a couple of Briley kinsmen, back in the late 1700s, were large landowners in South Carolina, where a number of African-American Briley nameholders seem to trace to this day. I guesstimate (and I could be wrong), that one-third or so of us Brileys are African-American. To all of us I say "God bless you and be proud of the name we share!") I think I am a descendant of Thomas Henry Briley of the Northern Briley's as you have so designated. Unfortunately I began by trying to track down our Native American heritage which basically went nowhere. We somehow are linked to the Shawnee, Wyandot, and maybe Cherokee. My great grandmother supposedly was a Shawnee and descendant of Chief Roundhead (a general to Techumseh) of Indian Lake, Ohio (but, he was a Wyandot - go figure). My father was Norville Franklin Briley (b. aug. 1929 died 5-1968)to Walter Laurence Briley b. 04/1890 in Texas died 04/1956 in Modesto Ca. and Virdia (Montgomery) Briley (died in 1984). There were three other siblings - Arno (died), Mildred (still living) and a young brother who died in his teens. Walters parents were William Robert Briley b. 02/1862 in Missouri and C. Dorothy Caldwell (don't know her b. date but died BEF 1896.) William remarried to Ida Rowlett b. Jan16,1859 in Fannin Tx. They had one son named Arno b. in Sep. 1897 in Southern Ca. died in Lane Oregon in May of 1965 this Arno married Maryann Minerva Blaswick in Tulare Ca. in 1930.

| Comments: | Greetings: I am doing some research for my brother-in-law whose gg grandfather was James R. Briley, born approx. 1845 in Indiana. His mother and father were born in Pennsylvania and Ohio respectively. James married Esther LaRue in approx. 1867 and had three children, Phillip (b. 1867), Minny (b. 1871) and May or Mary, (b. 23 Dec 1872, in Lafayette, Madison, Indiana). Esther died approx. 1872/73, some weeks/months after giving birth to May/Mary. James as a widower with these three children shows up on the U.S. 1880 Census for Eire, Sedgwick, Kansas. James later shows up in the 1910 U.S. Census living in Blackfoot, Idaho. A James R. Briley shows up on the Idaho State Death Index as dying in Blackfoot in 1916. (Notes from an EVERETT family history indicates that James R. left the mid-west along with his daughter May/Mary and moved to Idaho, unknown date.) May Briley went on to marry Burt Willard Pierce 1 May 1891, in Blackfoot, Idaho. She died 9 Feb 1957 in Boise, Ada, Idaho.

They relocared to East St Louis, IL in the 40's. I know he had been married before and I think his father's name was Thomas or Kenneth. My grandfather died in 1974 or 1975. John moved to TX before the Civil War and later rode with the CSA TX 13th Regiment. He is buried in the Four Corners cemetery near Fort Smith, AR under a CSA tombstone. His son, (my great grandfather) settled near the same area. My gradfather's name was Roy and my father (still alive) is named Robert E. Briley in N. Little Rock, AR. |

I am an African-American female with Briley relatives that I believe to be from the Rocky Mount, NC area. There was some talk and I remember a visit from the FBI in '85 on the whereabouts of the infamous "Briley Brothers" who escaped from death row in Virgina or W. Virgina. I don't know if they're related, but the sure looked like my uncle JB. My aunts names were Mary (passed), Constance (passed) Sis, Uncle Walter (passed) and James and my dad Watts Daniel Briley.
