I know this is way after the fact but my dad, Richard Rutherford was one of your instructors at San Ramon High. He passed away about 3 years ago and I guess the main reason I am bringing this up is that he talked about being backstage for a show of your band in Lake Tahoe back in the mid to late 90's. I have been always been a big fan of my dad and also contemporary music. I worked for years at a record store in Walnut Creek (Record Factory) and with all that said, I evolved into a painter and sculptor. I wanted to let you know of my dad's death and for me I just wanted to get a feel for the impact my father had with you. Went to see you guys in Belfast last night. I really enjoyed the gig! Myself and my brother were waiting to meet you guys at the back of the venue. We were the only 2 people there and we had waited 6 hours. It seemed everyone was in a rush but were good enough to sign an autograph but I have to say biggest thanks to you Jim for coming out 10 minutes later and giving us a pair of signed sticks each. It was really unexpected and made waiting all that time worth it! It was really good of you to do that and it made us feel that you really appreciated us waiting and took the time out to do something like that. Thanks for sharing on your journal :-) I loved the show in Rotterdam so much. Totally fell in love with Counting Crows music when I was sixteen, and somehow due to bad luck and bad planning on my part, this is the first time I've seen you live - I'm now 22. So basically six years of waiting, and it was so worth it. Last year when the band was here for three performances... I was actually in Arizona and Cali. Such planning! | Comments: | It's funny. i've actually met most of the band serveral times over the years... having one of your best friends work for the bands helps :P
This past weekend i saw jim, immy, and dave downtown amsterdam LOL :) in fact, i ran right into them in a small alley... it was so funny. i actually live in alabama. i was in amsterdam for 4 days on vacation (i go at least once a year). anyway, so 11am downtown amsterdam this past sunday morning in a 7 foot wide random ally near the coffeeshop "grey area", i walk right into Immy, he walks around me - "it's up here on the right", he said. I do a touble take, and sure enough it was Immy LOL in the middle was clearly Dave and then Jim in a blue jacket. I had just smoked one (it was amsterdam afterall LOL) a few mins earlier and was just stood there in shock i think. I turned around to say hi from my friend (who i had just emailed before and after the event) and intro myself again - but they were walking fast. I'm pretty sure they were looking for grey area but it was only 11am and it wasnt quite open yet. I tried to catch back up to them but i was limping from twisting my foot the day before. LOL i love amsterdam :) this was my third trip to amsterdam but my first time going alone and heading to rotterdam alone just didnt seem wise in my planning so i actaully flew back to the states this past monday afternoon. i just thought it was freaking crazy to just walk into them randomly like that and thought i'd my share :) - john |

She never forgot that. Read a story a few years back about you surprising another kid with drums. I can't remember his name but he had a rare skin disease called epidermolysis bullosa. My daughter also suffers from that rare disease. Just want you to know you also made her day way back when. She is all grown up now (25) and on valentine's day will be having her own CD release party. By the way, I dont if you have heard from Mike Q. or Cousin C., but Mike's band performed for the kids at Camp Wonder this year and Bean got up there and played a few songs with the band on drums. It was his first "public performance", and it was a smash hit. The kids at camp went nuts every time he got up there to play. He played three songs. Two of them he had down tight, the third he later admitted he was making up as he went along, but it came off seamlessly and noone would have known if he hadnt said something. Ask Mike Q. to see the video next time you see him, its a riot. Bean is already thinking about a few songs for next year just in case the band makes a return performace. He has E.B. and is now sixteen years old. They all said how wonderfully kind you were, and how "real" you were. Their family will be forever touched by your generoisty. They are very wonderful friends of mine and just could not stop talking about how wonderful you were, and how much the experience meant to Dale's nephew.

| Comments: | I was just watching the 90's countdown on VH1 and it suddenly reminded me of meeting ur dad in Athens Greece awhile ago, he asked me a question on the airport bus in his "Greeklish" and was happily surprised when i replied in my perfect American English! We chatted for awhile about SF and Greece etc. and he mentioned his son was in this rock band and so i asked him the name and he was very surprised when I'd heard of it since I've lived for many years on a remote Greek island! I know it's probably "old hat" to you now, but I must say that your playing on Amy Grant's live DVD is absolutely phenominal. A study in good taste and control. I watch it regularly to get "tips" on your technique. I also notice on Roy Burn's site that you now use Aquarian heads? They've been a favorite of mine for years, and i was wondering which model head you are trying, and how you like them. I don't believe that there's a better constructed drum head in the industry. A note from the Netherlands again. I am very anxious to hear the new stuff from the Crows. How is the tour doing? Nice that you are playing the smaller venues. By the way: smaller venues are still bigger than the great venues here in Europe.... Finally saw some drumming of you with Sheryl Crow from the DVD live in London. She speaks also very nice on the DVD about you (is there something you need to tell us????) I mailed with Hudson Music about a DVD with all the great musical drummers like yourself, JR Robinson, etc. My plan was to make a DVD with the musical approach to drumming, instead of almost Olympic drumming like Thomas Lang or Mike Portnoy. Very nice also, but drumming is not only playing fast or loud. Mr. Wallis told me he would consider it. So if you get a call from Hudson Music please remember me!!!!
