I left the orphanage in July of 1955; my name in the orphanage was Frederick Wayne Kaulback however much later I found out my last name was Dickie. My mother had married a Kaulback however I was born out of wedlock and my mother's maiden name was Dickie. I was only there two or three years and had 8 step brothers and sisters who were not at St. Joseph's. Although I was sent out to foster homes a number of times I kept coming back as my mother had promised to send for me one day which she did. I guess the poor families who took me in where not impressed with me as I knew how to get back to the orphanage just kick bite and scream and sure enough she sent for me. I must say though my treatment by the sisters was always fair and good no horror stories. I knew when I was bad and deserved punishment of some sort. It was a good thing they did influence my life at an early stage or I probably would be dead or in jail. My life has been nothing but fantastic married to the same wonderful women for 38 years with 3 wonderful children and 3 grandchildren .A very successful career in business after leaving home at age 14 and going to work with grade 7 education. From my research, it appears that my father may have been one of the 39 miners killed in the 1 November 1956 mining disaster at the Springhill NS coal mine. It has been suggested to me that I was placed into an orphanage. She told she thought those nuns were from another world and sometimes when they were in bed at night and there was a thunderstorm, the nuns would gather around reciting "Hail Mary's". The picture is of him and Donald Hall(donny). The photo was published on the front page of the Chronicle on 8/14/1951, they are eating lunch. The caption says that the boy's name is Denny. Her mother left her and her siblings due to necessity, she begged her to take them back , which thank God she was able to do. I later entered nursing and looked after one of the sisters that worked at the orphanage.My Mum asked me not to believe that she was as sweet as she appeared.This was all before your time so I hope your experience was better. This year has scarred me for life and I blame the sister (I can't remember her name) in charge of junior boys for one of the most miserable and traumatic experiences I've had to endure. This experience has followed me throughout my life and has had a very negative affect on the way I perceive the world. It is also something I cannot find closure for, no matter how hard I try. I can have to pity those other children who could not leave and who had to endure this throughout their childhood lives. I have met many sisters who were kind and inspirational, especially sister Elane Therese, my grade one teacher. However, there are those women who entered the convent for all the wrong reasons and who seriously hurt young and vaunerable children emotionally. I find that very hard to forgive. | Comments: | My mother-in-law who was born March 29, 1907 or 1908 in Sidney, Nova Scotia was placed in a Catholic orphanage by her unwed mother. She did learn that her birth mother's name was Cassie Davidson who later married an unknown Lively and had children with him. My mother-in-law did, as an adult, meet and visit with her birth mother and 1/2 siblings. Cassie Davidson Lively never would tell her who her father was. Hilda was adopted at 3 years of age by an older, widowed women who had a son 17 years older than Hilda. The adoptive family name was Knox. To stop the birth questions and so forth she was sent to NJ, USA to relatives or friends where later she married Frank Van Blarcom and had 8 children, living all her life and dying in NJ. The family would like to find the Lively branch and the Knox branch of my mother-in-laws family tree and possibly the knowledge of who her father was. |

| Comments: | I was so surprised to find this site. I was in St. Joseph's 1960-1968. My name is Wilma Dunphy and my sister's name was Dorothy. Some people may not like what I have to say,but it has to be said. I've waited many years to vent my frustrations. Sr. Elizabeth Anne was a sadistic woman who beat me so many times I couldn't fathom a guess. The funny thing is I didn't do anything to deserve the beatings. If anything went wrong I would get nervous and she would take that as a sign that I was responsible for whatever. I have physical scars and mental scars that I will take to my grave. If I knew of a way I would sue the Catholic Church for allowing this to happen. We went home on the week-ends with our mother, on Sun. nights Mom would bath us before we went back. What my mother saw on my body caused her to call the police. I was bruised from my shoulders down past my buttocks, big blood blisters. Mom brought the police back with me . Sr. Elizabeth Anne denied hitting me, she said I must of fallen down!! My mother left us there even after witnissing my body. (I was five years old). My sister committed suicide at age 39 she was never able to trust people, she to as well as many of the other girls were beaten. This was a house of god, Well God forgot all about us!!! | Comments: | My husband's grandmother, Ella Redmond, was born <1873> in August. In the 1881 census she was listed as 7 years old and under the name of Ellen Dooely living with James and Margaret G. Conrad. We always knew her maiden name as Conroy so are stumped at this information and wondered if she had been adopted. James and Margaret also lost a son of 1 month old in March of 1874 so this would not fit with another natural child " Ella" to be born of August 1873. I stayed here untill they decided to tear down the building. on the girls side Sister Anne Marie looked after us. On the boys side it was Sister bernica I believe. There were only a hand full of us who spend the weekend here together. We were very close. I remember the last name moore's John and Joanne. | Comments: | (formerly George Gavel) Re: Boarded at St Josephs' Orphanage 1964-1966 I finally got up the courage to bring my history to RESTORING JUSTICE (Roche Longuepee).It was a somewhat uncomfortable experience to rehash old memories but Roche has a way of making it all seem effortless to open up and recount the stories. He's 'been there' and can empathize with our stories. I approached Restoring Justice with the hope that whatever I can do might help others in the present and in the future. Also, I feel it might bring closure for me when I am acknowledged for the pain and memories I painfully recall far to easily(PTSD). At 52, I'm more aware of how my personality was shaped by the experiences I endured as a young boy, placed and and forgotten in these Orphanages. Whenever I feel I have it under control and see the memories as 'history to forget', someone or something will trigger a memory that louses up my day and mood, leaving me in a funk, wanting to be to 'be left alone'... Their brother Ernie was also there and their sister Lorraine. However, Lorraine was removed after a short time by a family member. My father passed away in 1986 at the age of 50 and he never once spoke of his time at St. Joseph's. I wonder if you know of anyone who wrote about their time there. After almost one year the adoptive mother phoned Sister Mary Claire and told her she could not bond with me. He lists his parents on his wedding certificate as John Kelly and Mary/Marie Power. In the 1881 census of Canada John and Mary have a son John born 1866. He is also listed in the preceding years. I did find a John Kelly born 1872 in the 1881 census in an Orphanage in Halifax, Ward 6, Dist. 9. I am not sure if this is St. Joseph's but am assuming so as this is the parish this family seem to belong to. Would any of the records of this time period still be available. John Kelly died in 1937 in Rochester, New York. Also, under his name in the census was a Robert Kelly age 4. This could be a coincidence but my brother was named Robert. I moved with my family in 1965, to Halifax where my Mum was from and grew up there. | Comments: | I lived at St.Josephs Orphanage in Halifax,NS from September 1964 to June 1967. My name then was 'George Gavel', a blond, bespectacled, curly haired boy with a lot of emotional issues going on, who was overwhelmed with the experience of being left abandoned in the Orphanage. I was removed from a well-bonded foster family after seven years together. My memories are both good and bad. I was alone and frustrated, living among too many boys who bullied me daily. Even Sister Joseph Bernice & Sister Leo Marie were known to throw us into the laboratory with boxing gloves on, to be beaten by one of the older boys. 'toughening up' is what thet saw it as.... I remember the multiple beatings from the Nuns...the folded/knotted extension cords, the broken yard sticks,the branches, the repeated 'cuffs' to my head... I remember being refused to urinate when I 'had to go'..as punishment. I recall being thrown into the bath tub with very hot water..as punishment for streaks in my underwear.I was forced to wear diapers as an eight-ten year old, whenever I didn't 'wipe' myself well enough!Or if I wet the bed...and I did, nightly... I was placed in closed cupboard, under small chairs or in a chair in the middle of the room, for the other boys to taunt and tease me. I found that the trouble makers took pleasure in bullying me and the Nuns seemed to be amused to watch this without stepping in to stop it...ever! The oddest thing was for us all to be paraded down to the local Funeral Parlour to say 'the Rosary' for the dead...or to be taken out into the community to sing as the Orphanage Choir...I hated that..it was so humiliating, from my perspective, out there for all to see us in our 'orphan-ness'...I hated for anyone to know that I was a 'bastard'! Those were fighting words to me... Three school years is a long time to a small boy. When I got out, I was a mess!! I had issues around bed-wetting, trust, anger and bullying, self-esteem and especially bonding. I was angry with the World! I was 'damaged goods' as a result of their 'care'... St Josephs shouldn't have existed to begin with...the damage they caused us from their non-stop belittling and rudeness..has left me with memories that,sometimes, haunt me. I survived 32 foster placements...and St.Joseph's was the worst one of the bunch!!Honestly!! "Working for the Lord" was the excuse I heard most often, whenever I complained about my abuses. "They couldn't have done that...they are working for the Lord." No investigation...no believing the boy who was hurting...nothing!!I came to trust nobody.... I don't have many good memories of the place...a few friends who watched out for me...good food...weekends away to visit with the family I was pulled out from. Repeatedly running away to them forced the Sisters to look at allowing me visiting times with tht family... Going back to live with them after those three years, was a disaster! I was untrusting, angry and lashing out at every opportunity. I was oblivious to the possible consequences for my behavior...even threats to be 'moved on' to an other home was not a good tool to have me behave... I taunted and dared them to do it...and they did!! Because of how the Orphanage treated me for those twenty-two months of abuse and neglect, I was left with life-long issues that have harmed my relationships, friendships, jobs, homes...everything! It's been a whole lot of work to bring myself to where I am today. A successful business and a good family life...with the occasional 'blip' in how I perceive and react to things...but I guess we all have our 'issues' and it's up to us to help ourselves! Some have written much more positive stories about St Josephs...It makes me wonder if we got preferential treatment and I was the scapegoat. I remember being there and not wanting to take off my new shoes and lie down on the cot and have my nap as they called it. The nun or whoever took me with them to check on the babies in another room. My adoptive parents only told me I went there not why or anything more about it. I was adopted more than once and I am wondering if maybe I was in the orphanage for some time and they just did not want to tell me. The funny thing about it is I still remember the shoes as clear as bell. They were blue with a strap that was held on by a button. |

| Comments: | I along with my brother were amoung the abused at the hands of Sister Joseph Bernice and Sister Mary Clair at the Orphanage in the 60's. We were sort of boarding at the Orphanage and went home on weekends if we were allowed. For this we paid dearly in extra abuse because "we had a mother and the other boys did not". Many stories and memories still rebound in my brain, and not the good ones. I must say that all the times were not bad and I remember Camp Villa Maria with fondness especially one time that we were allowed to go swimming in a hurricane (tied to a rope). I loved this place till the reality of life came back and some other reason to get backhanded in the mouth came along. The Sisters loved to dole out the physical punishment!!! |

| Comments: | We just found the St. Joseph's Orphanage site tonight. I was in the orphanage for 2 years, with my sister Rosaline and brother Vincent. After reading the comments, it's not hard to see that many of us experienced abuse and the long term effects. It saddens me to think that this was allowed under the guise of religion. I certainly can relate to the hatred and bitterness experienced towards the nuns, and the anger towards God for allowing this to happen. I questioned how a God of love could allow this type of abuse. But now I see that there is always hope to be found in the midst of misery and despair. I was glad to find healing from many of the hurts and pain I had experienced as a child. Sometime in the future, I'd like to get together with the other survivors as we share our lives' journeys. Does anyone remember James Chaisson? I also met a fellow by the name of Carl who had vivid, disturbing memories from there. Thank you for having the courage and strength to share. |

| Comments: | I am searching for my mother, Mary Kathern Gosson, birth parents. Her birth certificate states she was born in Plympton Station, Nova Scotia. Near Digby. She was born April 6, 1929. She would never talk about it and asked that we not look into this while she was alive. She died in 2005, here in Sudbury Ontario where she lived with me for 2 years before that. She said she was adopted but there is no official adoption papers for her -I have checked. I Have been to Halifax, vital statistics, Dalhousie University, public archives,and Catholic Archdioeses in Halifax as well. I can find no record of mom anywhere. I have been looking since 2005. She was conditionally baptized in St. Patrick's parish in Lochaber, Guysborough county, Nova Scotia. She was raised in Giant's Lake, Nova Scotia> I have been back to Nova Scotia several times talking and checking to many, many people and but have come up with nothing. I still have relatives on my dad's family side in Pomquet Pt. Nova Scotia so we are always travelling when we can back home. I feel we her children(there are 7 siblings ) should have this information because we are a very close family and would like to have the very private information for our family.
