How well I remember you! I am Debbie Marcus' sister "Cissy," and I remember giving you guys rides from Elmont to Floral Park and back again way back when Debbie and you were friends. I remember how troubled and angry you were, though I was just a kid myself. What is ironic is that I adopted a 7 year old girl from Russia about 12 years ago. She had been in an orphanage since the age of 16 months, as her mother had alcohol problems and could not take care of her. She signed her over as eligible for adotion at 3 and she waited all those years to be adopted. It's a long story, but she is very, very angry. I remember you having a similar anger, and I wondered if it didn't have everything to do with being adopted. I am so happy for you that your family life is resolved now. You and your sisters are beautiful. I have often wondered if my daughter's birthmother went ahead and had another child after my daughter. There is no birth control in Russia and the women don't have the same access to abortion that they used to. It's very sad. Endless gratitude to Litsa Kyrellis for a near impossible task in finding my birth mother, siblings in Greece, as well as A BROTHER in Germany, I never knew I had! I, too, was adopted in a black market operation. Mine was different as my mother was in New Jersey and is of Italian/Sicilian descent. Today I'm filing a police case against the OB/GYN, Dr. Carl Rasin, who arranged my illegal adoption. Last I heard, it's illegal to sell people. Doing my own search I came across an email from someone with a Greek connection. Here's her email. Thanks for having this site. I'll tell this other woman about your site. JoAnne I too am a black market baby. I was born April 3rd or 4th if you want to believe my birthmom, 1956, in Corinthia, Greece. My birthmom was just turning 22. Her birthday is April 8th; what a coincidence... I was then taken to an Orphanage in Athens when I was about 11 days old. My birthmom stayed with me for 4 months and then left me, trying to reconciliate with her parents and let her take me back to her Villlage. They never did let her and she went to England for 7 years working as an Au Pair girl in a Greek communtiy. She then came back to Greece when she was in her 30's and was married in an arranged marriage, to a widower with a son, just 14 or maybe younger. So I do have a step-brother which is nice. While I have adoption papers, I was told by a man who was a native Greek, that they were fake. I joined a group back in 1996 called SEASYP; don't remember now what it stands for, but they were an organization in Athens, Greece, that helped Greek children find their birth familes and vice-verse. | |

Words failed me, as I discovered this Website after a lengthy search on ask.com for, "Greek-born adoptees in the U.S." While I noticed that many of you had resided in the orphanage in Patra, does anyone know of adoptees who had lived for any length of time in either, or both orphanages in Kalamata? I spent nearly three years between the two orphanages in Kalamata. The years were from late winter of 1956 through early fall of 1958. My birth name was Maria Tzemopoulos, born in Lahanada, Messinias Province. My village of Lahanada is near Finikounda, which in turn is near Methoni. My birth, to Basel and Efstathia (Toula) Tzemopoulos, was registered in Methoni. My birth mother's maiden name was Skoulikas, or Skoulikakis, as it would have been known on the island of Crete. It's been a while since we spoke but I have great news. Your advice was great. Mary found my family. They were trying to find me too. My mom and dad are alive and I have 4 sisters. Unfortunatly 1 died days after I found them. They can not wait to see me and my children and husband. The details are remarkable. I was worried they would not accept me. But, they did. They knew all about me and thought about and talked about me all the time. We write and talk on the phone. 2 of my nieces speak and write english rather well so she does all the translating. According to my adoption papers I was adopted from the Municipal Foundlings Asylum of Patras in 1958, My date of birth according to the papers is August 13th 1957. The papers say that my biological name is Pannayotis Pateris and that my matriculation number is 10954. I to am adopted. I was born in 1956 and adopted in 1958 on the Island of Crete. I was adopted by an American couple who were stationed in Greece during that time. What I do know is that I was given up at birth. I was dropped off at the orphanage when I was about a week old. I do not know if I was born in a hospital as I do not have any records except for my adoption papers. I do know that I was the the first greek orphan to be adopted by American Citizens because I have the news article about my adoption. I hope by sending this information someone might be able to help me. I am very happy for all of the people that have been able to find their families. This gives me hope that maybe someday I will be able to find out something about my family. I don't have much to go on because I don't have the name of a hospital but I do know the name of the orphanage and I have my adoption papers and newspaper articles about my adoption.
