My GG Grandfather's brother was Pvt. William T. Goode Co. K 2nd Mississippi. He was wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines and again at the Battle of Antietam where he was captured and died from his wounds in a Federal Hospital at Fredrick, Maryland. I am very proud to have his name associated with the history of this web site. Thank you for your tribute!

My GG Grandfather and his younger brother both served with Co. H of the 12th NJVI. Both of them were east of the stone wall when the 2nd Mississippi arrived with the rest of Davis' Brigade, July 3rd 1863. All I have read from the Federal side has spoken with the highest regard for the courage and valor of the Confederates who braved that storm of Buck & Ball the 12th NJ sent out. You can be proud of your ancestors and their devotion to their cause.

My compliments on a wonderfully informative site. My great grandfather, Charles Henry Ganong, served in Company K, originally the Iuka Rifles. His service record with the 2nd Mississippi lists him as AWOL/deserted. I know what happened. Returning home on furlough, he met a young woman, my great-grandmother, and decided to stay nearby and get married. He never rejoined the regiment. However, he continued to serve the Confederacy. He signed up with a unit called Moreland's Cavalry and was with them through the rest of the war. His brother Cornelius served in the 11th Alabama Cavalry. Great painting by Troiani. I'm a fan of his.

Deo Vindice! I am the proud decendant of my g-g-g-grandfather Phillip F. Brandon, 2nd Miss. Co. F Infantry. I believe, as I'm sure all of yall do, that my kin and their Confederate compatriots stood for a thing that was and is right and just before the Lord. Truth and right do not change over time, no matter the circumstances - that is why I have picked up the banner of Southern Liberty that was unjustly stripped from our fathers - I am the Robert E. Lee County Mississippi Chairman of the League of the South. We Seek to Advance the Cultural, Social, Economic, and Political Well Being and Independence of the Southern People by all Honourable Means. We are the premier Southern Nationalist Organisation in Dixie, fulfilling the words of Jefferson Davis when he said that "The Principle for which we contend is bound to reassert it'self, though it may be at another time and in another form." I invite yall to come on over to http://www.Dixienet.org and read more about the League of the South, and I'd love to hear from yall. Resurgam! (I shall rise again!) - Matthew Brandon Robinson

Last year in Pearl, MS I saw an 1861 50 cent piece that had ALP Vairin second Mississippi Vols ingraved on the back with a hole drilled through for it to be worn. I assumed someone had made themselves a "dog-tag" so that thier body might be properly identified and sent home. I vowed to find the ancestors of ALP Vairin and tell them where this treasure was. I found he was a watchmaker and jeweler, never married and left no direct decendants. He didn't die in the war, as I guess he feared, but died an old man in the hme of his sister in KY. I decided I would be his "ancestor" and went back yesterday to see if the man still had the coin. He did, and it is now on a chain around my neck. I tremble to think of the battles it witnessed. Mike, would very much to have contact with you. I am desparate to gather information about my great grandfather before my mom passes away> She is 86 years old today (6/17) and in somewhat failing health. My great grandfather was James Chesley Hughes of Co K 2nd Miss. He is buried in the Mt Gillead Cemetary at Iuka. Mom and I were able to visit his grave last summer. I believe there is a wealth of information stored in a vault of sorts at the Mt. Gillead Baptist Church outside of Iuka. I spoke by telephone with the current Pastor there last year, and they were trying to get a group together for the purpose of opening up the old church records and finding out what information they may contain. I live in northern Nevada so am quite removed from that area. Should you or anyone reading this guestbook find interest here please e-mail me to establish contact.

I was in Shepherdstown WV taking a course. Deciding to take a side trip, I arrived on a Sunday afternoon at Harpers Ferry and noticed re-enactors in a grove of trees by the Shenandoah. For some reason, my friend and I approched them. Not knowing much about the Civil War, I thought their uniforms looked foreign - like Hessians. Imagine the coicidence I discovered upon learning they were portraying the 2nd Mississippi. Being a Mississippian, I learned more that day about my own state and those who marched north on the adventure of a lifetime. I was fascinated to hear that NB Forrest somewhat protected NE Mississippi from destruction. Interesting day!

My family, Marshalls, Herrings and Thompsons are from the area from which the Regiment was raised. I have no documentation beyond my Grandparents, Jesse Walter Marshall and Maybelle (nee Herring) Marshall. I see that these names are on the muster rolls. Jesse Walter Marshall's mother was Mary Jane Thompson another surname that appears on the rolls. I have located my both sides of my family in units at Gettysburg as well as other major battles but I have been unable to locate a direct link. If anyone hears a bell ringing from the names above please reply. I keep coming up on dead end roads and I am determined to prove my eligibility for the SCV. Thank you for your excellent research.
