Dr. D
Nice work you two. Impressive would be an understatement!! Quick question. Any chance we could use your photos of the Pebble Mine test drill sites for promoting Ballot Measure 4 (AK Clean Water Innitative)? Those are some powerful shot that would give Alaskans just a taste of what could be on such a wider scale. These photos can really make a difference and we only have about 11 days before the big vote. Please respond ASAP! Big Thanks! D

Great attitudes
Hey-Ho Erin & Hig, Enjoying the podcast updates on Backpacking Light. I have listened to 3 of your adventure stories whilst out on my own trips here in Minnesota. What a challenge you both face ... I am impressed with your attitudes and your understanding of each other. Hope you have many more treks together in your bright futures. Truly, Sean Emery

Since Erin and Hig were over due in Yakutat, I was worried about them. I contacted a friend in Gustavus who called a friend who works at an air service in Yakutat. They kept an eye out for Erin and Hig along the beach on a flight to Dry Bay and spotted them walking near Italio Bay. So, they should be in Yakutat within a couple days more or less.

photo in Glacier Bay
Hi Erin and Hig, We spoke briefly as you were leaving Bartlett Cove to cross Glacier Bay on Friday evening. I was the person in the skiff who took your photo. Wanted to wish you well, and offer you the photo, if you want it. Write me an email and let me know where to send the pics if you want them. Cheers, Chris

Gore Point
I imagine that most people in Homer are aware of our Gore Point cleanup in the summer of 2007. I found your Blog after we had returned and loved it. It sure explained the shack that we found. check out my blog at www.pickupyourtrash.blogspot.com I think you will find it very interesting and perhaps nostalgic.

Boy your treks are amazing. Your undertaking is huge and would seem impossible except so would your other successful treks. You guys are definitely stretching the limits of trekking and helping to motivate others to do so also. Although my recreation is on a much smaller scale, your accomplishments have made me reconsider what it possible. Thanks for the inspiration from sharing your adventures. Stay safe on your trip. Also thanks for the advocacy on the Pebble Mine issue which will be a difficult battle for us here in Southcentral Alaska against enormous resources.

What about island to island
I am considering buying a Alpacka raft instead of renting a sea kayak for a trip island hoping in Exuma islands. What do you think? Will I be able to keep up with my friend who will have a kayak? Will I be a burdon to the trip with it? Thanks, Glenn

Wha-kaa! Fantastic pics and equally riveting trek. I lived among the Yup'ik in the Bristol Bay area and loved the area north of Dillingham in the Wood-Tikchik lake system. From the air, it's breath taking, at ground level, a true wonderland of sights, smells, and sounds. Quyana!

From the limited Trek Map I saw, I can't tell for sure, but it looks like you plan to head out Icy Strights from Juneau, AK. to the Coast. If that is the case, I would invite you to stop by Excursion Inlet, Alaska on your way thru. As one who actually "Lives" out here in the alaskan bush, it would a BLAST, if you would stop by. I 'm sure the "Close Neighbors", (Close = 10 Sq. Miles) and the Neighbors, (Neighbors = 100 Sq. Miles) would be interested, in your trip as well. Bruce in alaska

Swell idea! Have fun!
I just read the P-I article and wanted to wish you well. I'm a 54 year old woman who's been disabled most of my life. Another disabled person once told me she didn't envy able-bodied people as long as they appreciate their nicely functioning bodies. Which apparently you two do! It was always my dream to escape the city and live in Alaska (I finally made it as far as the Olympic peninsula where I now live), so, ok, I'm a LITTLE jealous, but, really, I just gotta say, Good for you! I hope I can vicariously follow you on this website. One more thing: I always wonder why people go to gyms and all, or buy those costly exercise machines, when they could go hiking somewhere. It's a mystery to me... Anyway, again, good luck and have a ball!

your knowledge of the pebble project is impressive.i do wonder though why you never seem to have interviewed northern dynasty yourself. all you have done is quoted other publications in your own article and threw in some pictures to add color.maybe in the future you should get your facts straight from the source instead of relying on second hand information from other sources.that would give your adventure a bit of credibility, but don't worry about being a writer, you still could perhaps become a photographer with some classes at a local area college.

I found your site while researching a route on the Harding Icefield. Thank you so much for your work on the Pebble Mine issue and raising the awareness of this special place and potential threat. Your travels and style in the wilderness is inspiring! I hope you are moved to continue blending environmental work with wildereness exploration in Alaska.

A friend and I are wanting to go on a 40 day backpacking trip up in alaska. Were looking for a mix between the landscape like The Gates ofthe Arctic and dense forest. Do you guys have any tips or advice for us? We could use any of it. Were both freshmen in college with not alot of backpacking experience. Thanks

Hi! Enjoyed the pic's, paintings, & your story. I'm half AK Native. My wife is from Pedro Bay, AK but used to be married to a guy from Nondalton, AK. I've been back there too, and have done some hunting w/friend's who live there in Nondalton. My understanding is that the Village Tribal Council is against the mine, the local Nondalton Kijik Native Corp is "Neutral", and the major Bristol Bay Native Corp is "waffling" on it too. Personally, I'm against it!! I'm hoping to one day retire, and move to Keys Point which is north of Nondalton. Out of curiosity, did you stay with anyone in Nondalton? Thanks, Mike McKinney Eagle River, AK

I stumbled over your site while looking up info about the Alpaca raft. I'm thinking of buying one, but don't know how well they hold up in class III-IV whitewater, other than what the manufacturers have said. It's obvious you guys really like your raft, but how well does it hold up if it hits a lot of rocks or other debris on the river?

Stumbled over your site while searching for the best way to bring food on a trekking tour through Alaska. Thank you for all the useful information. And congratulation: Your Photos are great! I hardly can wait to get to Alaska in August this year. Have a good time, as we say in Germany: Hals- und Beinbruch. Take car, Joerg.
