Comments: As someone who's ancestors were from the region, and still live there- practicing the old religion- how does the experience of Pompeii deliver any insights into the new testament of the christians?
Glad you like the place, but keep your beliefs for your own experiences, please don't impose them on the heritage of others. The political decision that brought Rome to christianity was not adopted by all- at least not privately, and many still hold older, stronger beliefs, better suited for the place in which they arose.
I am always amazed that a desert religion like christianity thrived outside it's natural homeland, but it seems to have done this by overlaying and adopting existing practices, or simply by conquest.

I have been reading & re-reading your site once I stumbled upon after receiving my PCS orders to Naples last May. Your "letters home" were a wonderful way to learn what to expect upon my family's arrival! We could feel your ups & downs of living overseas.

After coming back to your site again this past week, I was looking at the pictures posted in your letters and have determined that we are living next door (to the south) to where your family had stayed while here!

I will continue to return to your site & letters to assist my family & I in making the most of our time here.

Thanks!

Comments: I just wanted to say thanks for such an interesting virtual tour. I was in Pompeii in 2005. I have seen the movie "The Last Days of Pompeii". Never the twain did meet. Up to the time of my pilgrimage (so to speak) I had always wanted to go. It was while on a trip to see the Pope in 2005 that I finally got to see Pompeii. I got there on the night he died and St. Peter's Square had been closed just minutes after my Plane arrived in Rome. My trip was going to consist of being there til they named the next Pope (Benedict XVI) but I came down with a terrible upper respiratory infection that I oddly got when I visited Pompeii in the interim when the cardinals went to the nine days of official mourning. Anyway. Loved your site and will bookmark it. Had to go back and look at my pictures again in Pompeii. There were several wonderful tourists who didn't mind taking a picture of a lonely pilgrim making his way around the streets of Pompeii.

Comments: I believe you have indeed mislabeled the apodyterium as the calidarium- those niches on the walls served as lockers, or cubbies, for the bath visitors. This is a common feature in Roman apodytia.

Also, liquids were generally not served in thermopolia- you'd more usually find things like nuts in them, since you could grab a handful and keep moving. Soups or drinks would require serving and eating utensils, which wasn't as good for the fast-food business.

Although I had taken over a hundred photos, I could not identify most of them, thanks to your website, I spent hours comparing and identifying my photos against yours. I am now able to write brief descriptions for most of my photo and at the same time have learned of the history/background of the subjects I photographed i.e. the bread ovens, the impluvium, frigidarium etc.

Comments: I have been searching for my great grandfather's side of the family. His name is Charles Marion Cole. I know that he married Malina S. Jennings. They lived in Green Forest Ark. My grandmother was one of their children. Her name was Zora Belle Cole(Hayhurst,Jones). Do any of these names sound familiar? I am looking for any information on Charles' parents, siblings etc. If you know of this family please feel free to email me. Thank you. Lisa

Comments: I was able to visit Pompeii on August 7, 2008 and your virtual tour made it easier for me to locate all the great scavi and artifacts. I did unfortunately get stung by killer bees, (joking about killer), three on the top of my head. But I didnt let it stop me. I had to see as much of Pompeii as I could. It really was funny after the bee episode. But I had pain for weeks after. I will never forget my day there. I plan to go again in October 2009.

Comments: Hi. Just wanted to thank you for your wonderful tour of Pompeii... I'd just finsihed reading Robert Harris's novel of the same name, and was looking for more information on the town when I came across your site, linked on the BBC History pages. My wife and I spent a few days in Rome last year, our first visit, and were blown away by the relics and monuments all over the city..our favourite places were the peaceful Capitoline Hill and, on a quiet day, virtually alone, at Ostia Antica. We will be making a special effort to get to Pompeii in the future. Kindest reagrds to you and yours, Mike Jones, North west UK. :o)

Comments: I will be blessed to be in Pompeii in August of 2008. I have wanted to see and explore this area of significance since studying the destruction at the age of 9 years old. So at the tender age of 51, I will finally see what I have longed to see and do. I stumbled on this site by googling and am so glad I found it. Thank you so much for all of the time and effort you have made to put this great information together for those of us who are so effected by what happened to so many 21 + centuries before. I am so anticipating the moment I can study, and hopefully have a clearer view of life in Pompeii so long ago. Again, God bless you for creating all of this. I will pass it on to others.

Comments: The most amazing thing happened-back in 2001, when my husband was stationed in the Azores Islands (Portugal) with the Air Force, I ran across your site and bookmarked it. Since we were so close to mainland Europe, I had hoped for a chance to visit Italy. Well, two babies in two years kept that from happening. But, after then getting stationed in Idaho and England with the Air Force and adding another baby, we now find ourselves, 6 years after finding your site, living in Naples! My husband got out of the service and is now a contractor for the Navy. We are living in Lago Patria. Isn't it a neat turn of events? Well, after 6 years, I forgot about your site, only to come across it a couple weeks ago in my "favorites" list. God works in funny ways. So, here I sit tonight, reading what I read 6 years ago in the Azores, from my living room in Italy. Thank you so much for posting your experiences. Some are so funny, as we experience some of the same things now, 25 years after you lived here. It was great reading the entries and thanks again. Also, feel free to check out our website (listed above). If you choose to, e mail me for the password. Thanks, Sarah Decareaux

We lived in a place called Parco Azzuro. We are both now retired and were considering a nostalgic trip to Italy in May 2009. Have You been there in the last few years and was it the same? I especially enjoyed your talking about irratic power and water. We spent one whole winter without power from 7pm to 7am. I use to say dinner by candlelite was romantic but breakfast wasn't ! I'll keep you and your medical missions in my prayers.
Sincerely,
Virginia

Comments: Hi there, I do eBay and met a customer from Italy and was surfing to find a picture of where we too were stationed as father Dana B. Turner was a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force and we lived there in Lucrino for about seven years total but during two stays.
I came upon your most beautiful site by happenstance or perhaps not according to our Father in Heaven.... and I could not help but catch your references to Carney Park "Oh what wonderful and fond memories and someone else that I now know experienced with much joy as well.
Pozzuoli and shoe alley too!!
Then there was indeed Pompeii and the cracking of the roads during our one hour drive from the base to our home at Parco Tripergola in Lucrino just up the street from a playground er aahh I mean Piazza and the volcano playground just behind our triple tiered housing complex.
I am now 47 and have an eleven year old son with whom I share these fond memories and truly hope I can take him to these places some day... For now they along with Jesus will stay forever in my heart.
Thank you for sharing your lovely and well orchestrated web site what fun!!! Blessings from my home to yours,Toni

Comments: A brilliant, fascinating and very instructive site illustrated with superb photos and map locations. As a speaker to schools and societies on this place and also Herculaneum I found yet more information to add to my talks.
I first went to the site in the late 1940`s when I visited Naples with the Royal Navy, (we had been on exercise with the US 6th Fleet!).
I was fascinated then and I am still fascinated today and still manage to visit occassionally. Thank you both.

Comments: I am researching Pompeii for a program I have been assigned to present in October 2008 to a study club, Argonauts, in Pryor, Oklahoma where I live. I enjoyed your website immensely. I have always been intrigued by the area because of a newspaper photo I saw years ago. The photo in The Tulsa World daily newspaper (Tulsa, OK) showed an acheologist's work. The remains of a family of three, all nestled spoon-fashion with a man on the outside holding a woman holding a child. The man wore a ring decorated with a fish symbol. I've always thought of this photo as an illustration of how a person can be a witness for Christ even thousands of years after his death. I have that clipping somewhere and pray I can find it to display when I give my program. Is your website copyrighted and do I need your permission to print material from it? Thank you.

I was particularly looking for a floor tile mosaic of a skeleton enscribed "Know Thyself" in Latin of course. I was wondering where it was found, in a doctors office possibly? I have a scan of the mosaic if you might like to see it. Do you recall seeing it? Is it nwo in the museum?
