Idle curiosity led me to your website but what a great resource for those serious in their researching. My granny was a Duckmanton and I spotted her birth and those of most of her siblings in your list. When we were little my Dad led us to believe that the name might have came from "Duke of Normandy". I'm not entirely surprised to discover that we are not connected with royalty! With best wishes from the Home Counties. Denise |

You emailed my youngest son Jason last year with details of my great great grandfather, also Samuel (photo at Welbeck Abbey circa 1911), which was very interesting. I also saw a mention of Alyson - daughter of Roy & i believe grandaughter of my great uncle Clive. I recall Roy coming to my grandparents home in Hodthorpe Nr Worksop & taking me taking me for a ride in a white sports car cica 1964/5 when I was 5 or 6 years old. |

I have four children, Larry, Larraine, Tina and Rebecca, to Barry Young. Tina married Richard Birch. Tina has two children, Cory and Chloe. Larraine has five children, Codie, Uriah, Sage, Kayda and Stevie. Rebecca has two children, Sheridan and Pagan. Larry lives in W/A. All my daughters are in NZ. I have been married twice. First to Barry Young, now deceased, then in 2000 to Ted Gleeson. We were only married two years and I am awaiting a divorce. No children to Ted. |

| Comments: | Hi Mel,
What a geat find this web site is! My grandmother was Elizabeth Duckmanton, born in Dunkeld in Victoria near Hamilton, her mother being a Womersley. The Duckmanton family emigrated around 1854 from Warsop UK. We have cuttings from the local paper describing a civic farewell to the family. Niel Duckmanton of Dunkeld organised a family reunion in 1994 and my mother was the oldest descendent aged 84. She was the youngest of Elizabeth's nine children from her marriage to Arthur Cashmore. Sir Talbot Duckmanton former manager of the ABC in Australia and some of his family were there as were some of the Germaine family. One of Elizabeth's sisters married a Germaine and one of her children, Max Germaine, compiled the Dictionary of Australasian Artists. Several of the Duckmantons and Germaines and me are involved in the visual arts and history. Would like to hear from more Australian Duckmantons Audray M Banfield AN Albury NSW |

Father is Edward Roger Duckmanton originally from New Zealand, mother is Robyn Beverly nee See. They live in Brisbane. Dean has a sister Michele who is now married to David Ravia.
I am trying to establish a Duckmanton family tree. I have one of my family which is an 1820 settler family who landed in South Africa (Miles/Dicks). My maiden name is Tapson. My mother in law has shown me some photographs of the New Zealand family but my father in law is a little vague as to who they are. There is one very interesting one with a Duckmanton in Army uniform, and the background is the sphinx in Egypt. |

| Comments: | Hello all, I was just browsing through various pages and came across the group on facebook and consequentially also this site.
I find it rather surreal that there are people out there with the surname of 'Duckmanton,' it is something that I can honestly say I have never come across before. From looking at the various members of this site and the facebook group I can see that there are plenty of you out there! Just to keep you updated with the current goings on in and around Duckmanton...after the closure of Markham Colliery a long long time ago now the former site has been cleared ready for new high-tech and 'green' industry to begin development. A new motorway junction is also under construction which shall hopefully bring much needed wealth to the area of the village of Duckmanton. The shutting of the colliery saw massive unemployment rates and since Duckmanton has been seen as a less than desireable place to settle due to it being affected by petty crime and anti-social behaviour. Things are on the up and appear to becoming better for the people of Duckmanton. My mothers side of the family have always lived in the village of Duckmanton and I live in Long Duckmanton(a less densley populated area seperated by council boundaries amongst other things.) If anyone has any questions or would like any fotos of famous Duckmanton landmarks feel free to contact me. Cheers J. Pimborough |

| Comments: | Hi. Doing the old family tree and ran straight into what seems like hundreds, if not more, of Duckmantons. Anyway my 4th great grandfather is (I believe!) George Duckmanton (b.1813), wife Jane Duckmanton (b.1811) - Their son William Duckmanton (1835) 3rd great grandfather, wife Hannah Duckmanton (1837) - Their son Henry Duckmanton (1866), wife Charlotte Anne Makin (1865) - Their daughter Ada Duckmanton (18 Nov 1885) is my great grandmother. All seem to hail from around the Warsop and Stone areas along with the Makin family. I have a bit of info that I'd be willing to share if anyone needs it, and of course would love to extend my own research.

| Comments: | Hi, Just Googled Long Duckmanton (cos its where I live) and found this website. Just thought I'd say there is a Steve Duckmanton from somewhere in Derbyshire that worked for Wildgoose construction and was involved in Derbyshire County Council contracting work. He doesn't appear to be on your list.
The Duckmanton sign in the old village is still there as is the pub and soon you will be able to get here faster as Junction 29a off the M1 motorway is currently being built at Duckmanton itself! Good luck! |

| Mel says: | Steve D is possibly on one of the other Duckmanton trees that I haven't got around to uploading to the website yet. I'll get around to it one day maybe.
Glad to hear that the Duckmanton sign is still there. I may get the chance to have my photo taken next to it even yet. I hope the little village of Duckmanton doesn't get too busy when you're joined to the M1. |

| Comments: | Fascinating website. Good to know there are so many other Duckmanton's out there! I need some help trying to find information regarding one of my descendents - a Martha Duckmanton b 1690 (possibly Warsop -I'm unsure) who married Thomas Smith in Warsop on 8 Sep 1713 and was buried in St Peter and St Paul, Warsop on 8 Apr 1728. I don't suppose anyone shares the same lineage and can inform me who her parents, siblings were???
Cheers and all the best! Steve |

| Comments: | Absolute madness - I cannot believe there are another TWO (2) Andrew Robert Duckmanton's roaming the planet! So much ado for creative naming by our parents... I also understand that another Andrew Duckmanton (The Duckman) is quite a successful DJ in the UK/Europe and is well regarded by many in the music field here in Australia.
Anyhow, I'm the son of Robert Antony Duckmanton (entry #48), born in Adelaide and now reside in Sydney. I have one son (Jude-Kingsley Diesel Duckmanton DOB 1/8/2004) and another Duckmanton due to arrive 23/8/2007 - approx 3 months from writing this entry. Having visited Duckmanton (Long, Far & Middle) and Sutton-cum-Duckmanton near Chesterfield (UK) I can say it is quite an interesting place (and that the Duckmanton pub serves quite a nice beer). There is also a lot of interesting information in the Chesterfield Library on the history of the name if one wants to drive 10 mins down the road. Here's wishing all the 'Ducks' in the world the best and so good to see a site up and running where we can feel a collective Duckmanton bonding. Many regards......Andrew |

I always intended to have my photo took next to the sign on the wall outside the pub you mention so there'd be just me and a big sign saying "The Duckmanton" - but I never got around to it. The sign's probably gone now anyway. |

It's good to see there is so many more out there. |

| Mel says: | I think Duckmanton is a wonderful and distinctly individual name and I'm proud of it.
But I know of two people who have legally changed it because they didn't like it - although one regrets this now. (Do the decent thing and change it back - you know who you are.) And yet another Duckmanton hyphenated his surname - for reasons best known to himself. |

They were: Pte. Norton Atton DUCKMANTON, 6243A. 27th Bn. Australian Inf. Killed in action 2nd March, 1917. Age 21. Son of Horatio Atton Duckmanton and Eleanor Juliet Blanche Duckmanton, of 8th Avenue, St Peter's, South Australia. Pte. Leo DUCKMANTON, 853. 1st Bn. 5th/8th May, 1917. Age 27. There is a story handed down through our generations which I have never discovered any physical evidence for. That is the origins of our name is from France, a landowner from Menton went with one of the Napoleans to England, won some battle and was gifted land as a result of the victory, He was known as the Duke of Menton. What do you know? |
| Friday, 3rd November 2006 - 09:49 PM | |
| Mel says: | Click HERE for an explanation of the origins of the Duckmanton name.
It's all far from France, without a Duke in sight, and long long before Napoleon was even a twinkle in his father's eye I'm afraid. |

My best wishes to all the Duckmantons and just to say I love living in Long Duckmanton, not to be confused with Middle Duckmanton or Far Duckmanton!! On one of your pictures you are stood in !"Old Ducky Village" (or Middle Duckmanton) as we call it. Even though the bit where I live is older!! Crazy. Had you walked 300 yards north you would be standing in Far Duckmanton. And just down the road at Calow (yes, Derbyshire is a quirky place!) is Duckmanton Moor and Duckmanton Lodge. So if nothing you have so nice places as your namesake. Bst wishes Julie |

| Comments: | Although have been living in the US these last eleven years, I am really an Australian Duckmanton. Born in Clare, South Australia, I am the son of Landseer Samuel Duckmanton, grandson of Horiatio Atton Duckmanton who gave his father as Matthew Norton Duckmanton when he married. My uncle, Norton Atton Duckmanton died in France in WW I and wrote in his last letter that he had visited his cousins in Lincolnshire. I would love to get a line on Matthew Norton Duckmanton. I believe he may have had a brother, Jonathon Norton Duckmanton and both may have married girls from a family named Atton or Aston. Jonathon Norton emigrated to South Austalia.
I have a son, Andrew Robert Duckmanton, who lives in Sydney and two daughters Bronwyn Heather (lives in Colorado) and Elizabeth Jane, who lives in Adelaide, South Australia. I have met Terrence William Duckmanton just once (he lives in Queensland) at a Duckmanton family reuion in Victoria. Good luck with this website and "Hi" to Duckmantons all over! |

| Comments: | My grandmother was Mary Ann Duckmanton (married Samuel Jarvis at Warsop 1886). One of her brothers was Arthur Duckmanton whose name has cropped up in messages from Cara Duckmanton in Canada and Geoffrey Duckmanton in NZ. About 4 years ago Geoffrey or Mel (? can't find my original notes) sent me some info on this branch of the family and included the following background to Arthur:
"Emigrated to Canada in 1910 after wife died in England. Left behind a 6-month old son Archie Duckmanton. Fought in WW I and went back to England during this time. Tried to get Archie to go back to Canada with him but his son would have nothing to do with him so he returned to Canada alone. He obtained some soldiers' settlement land in Alberta and tried to farm. Venture failed. With second wife produced at least one child, Arthur Cyril. Second wife died and he lost the farm. He married for third time (Ruth) and worked around Ardrossan delivering mail by horse and cart in the Summer and sleigh in the Winter. His third wife died not long after he married her. He married four times in total (3 wives died on him , 1 in England, 2 in Canada) and he died in 1954. He is buried in British Columbia. His son, Arthur Cyril, from 2nd marriage went to New Zealand in 1927 at the age of 15 with foster parents after his mother died. Arthur Cyril lost touch with family in Canada and did not know he had a half-brother in England until 1986 when his son, Geoffrey discovered this doing family history. Arthur Cyril had very little education but was hard worker, working into his 70s as a butcher and farm labourer. He died in 2000 at age of 86." |

Great site. I'm surprised how many Duckmanton's are out there and as far as CANADA, AUSTRALIA and NEW ZEALAND etc... I've traced my family tree as far back as late 1790's!!! My grandfather was John Cyril Duckmanton b1903, grt-grandfather George Wigfield b1877, grtgrt-grandfather John b1853, grtgrtgrt-grandfather William b1823/4, and finally my grtgrtgrtgrt grandfather John b1795? married (9/4/1812) Mary Ann Tongue b1797? Thanks to Mel for all his help and "Spanish inquisition". I'm also related to the DRING family from Bingham, Nottingham who also have a web site and yahoo group, so if any other Duckmanton's think your related to me you might gain two lot's of family through one connection like me!!! Mel, I have finally found out info about my grandfather's youngest sister EDNA!!! I knew she had lot's of kids. 10 altogether. She had been married twice also!!! Well enough of me going on - if anyone want's to email me feel free. |

I have 4 sons, Darren Shenton,Andrew James,Matthew Robert and Simon Frederick; grandchildren Donna and Jamie Shenton, Oliver and Zak are Matthews, Ethan is Simons. My parents originated from the Worksop area and are now buried at Manton, Worksop. It's amazing that considering there aren't that many of us,there are more Anthony Roberts in the family. Thank you for the site. I now want to know as much as possible about our family. My father by the way had a sister Grace who married my mother's brother and became Grace Dexter, living at Rhodesia,Worksop. I believe some of the Dexters still live there. |

| Comments: | I'm the third youngest grandkid of the late Wilfred James Duckmanton and I have very little info on his family. All I know is that I have cousins in New Zealand (Tony and Jane Duckmanton) and that some of the English Ducks don't really like us Canadian Ducks for something that my great (great) grandfather did. So please E-mail me if you have some info.
Thanks Cara Duckmanton |

| Mel says: | Your great grandfather was Arthur DUCKMANTON (1870-1954) who emigrated from Warsop (where I used to live) here in England to Canada in 1910. His father (your great great grandfather) was William DUCKMANTON (1833-1909). I'll email you your bit of the DUCKMANTON family tree so you can see where you fit in. I've no idea what William did to upset the English Duckies but if you find out then please let me know. |
