I am in Colorado, along with several Douds. i know my grandmother has mapped our branch of the family tree back as far as Henry Doude. I can't remeber names further back than my great grandfather, but i know i am the 13th generation down from Henry. | Comments: | Dear Dowd family, the English Dowds are nothing to do with the Irish Dowds - I'll qualify that a bit: the O'Dowd name has been rendered Doud(e)in Ireland, but rarely, and of course there are many Dowds born in England but of Irish stock (me for one). The English Dowds have a family tradition that they are descended from a Saracen captive from the Crusades, but that may be folk etymology by someone who realised Arab Daood = Hebrew David. The Irish Dowds are a well-known and much-recorded clan, their name means 'dark' (probably in a land of red-heads they had black hair). The coat of arms you show belongs strictly to the Irish clan (there may be one for the English Douds but I'm not aware of it).
Guilford (spelled as pronounced)was indeed named from Guildford, the county town of Surrey in England (always with the 'd' here, since it derives from the land willed in late 9th Century to his nephew by Alfred the Great: 'Gyldeford' = golden [sandy] ford). You will find many of the early Dowds in LDS "Family Search" as there were two cousins who joined the Mormons in the 1830's. Plus what work my family has done. there is a Dowd Book "The descendants of Henry Dowd who came from England in 1639" by Rev W.W. Dowd, 1885. Hartford Conn. press of Case, Lockwood & Brainard Co. My copy has been in the family for many Years and I have entered all the notes made by Geo. Braynard Dowd. of Rochester, NY. in to my PAF files so I have some of the more recent descendents mainly from central NY.

| Comments: | I am a beginning genealogist and have been frustrated with my Dodd/O'Dowd brick wall. According to family legend, the name was changed by John J. Dodd. He was born in Fairfield Co. Ohio around 1837 and was married to Kate Hines. Their son, George was born around 1857 and married Sarah Crissinger. Then my great-granfather, Earl was born in 1880, married to Delia Roy. I have been unable to find or confirm much more than this. Does anyone have any other clues?

| Comments: | The name used to be O'Dowd, but was Americanized in an attempt to hide the ethnicity in the 1880s. My great grandfather, Patrick Dowd, was one of 10 children born in Claremorris, Ireland. He emmigrated to the US in the 1880s, as did many of his brothers and sisters. Patrick may have lived/visited other places, but basically lived in New York City. He was a stone mason who helped build Grant's tomb. As a young boy, my grandfather took my father to Grant's tomb and showed him where Patrick had carved his name (or initials). However, in my visits, I haven't had any luck finding them. The family farm in Claremorris was inherited by Patrick's brother Edward. Edward had a son David and daughter Mary. Both my father and I have visited David in Ireland. Unfortunately, he did not marry. His death late last year marked the end of our clan in Claremorris. The estate went to Mary's children (Gibbons). |
