I am the daughter of Frank R. Gill and Thelma Swinson Gill of Jacksonville, NC., the grandaughter of Isaac and Sina Swinson. Since I haven't lived in Jacksonville, since the 1970's I haven't been able to attend a family reunion in 30 years, so finding your Swinson site was such a great help to me in my search for my ancestors. I have really enjoyed reading the information you have provided. I had only one concern, the relationship of Owen Gurganus and Tamma Batts, were the married and did they have other children? Hope you find this funny, when I was in high school at Jacksonville High, I stopped dating local boys because several of the boys I considered going out with turned out to be cousins. I had so many cousins I didn't know since my family had lived in PA for 7 years and in Wilmington for 8 years. Doing that worked out well for me in the end as I married a wonderful man, George Thuemling, and we've been together since 1972. My father passed away 10 years but my mother still lives in Jacksonville. My 2 brothers and 2 sisters also live there. thanks again. Linda |

As everyone else has mentioned, thank you so much for putting a great deal of work into our family heritage. I am the great-grandson of Levina Swinson, daughter of Jacob Edward Swinson. I was born in raised in Central Florida (where I still live), where my great-grandfather and great-grandmother moved to after the depression. I knew that they came from Moultrie, GA, and I still have relatives in that area. I also knew that they had moved to GA from near Wilmington, NC and I had heard that I had relatives with Civil War connections. Like someone else who signed your book, I had heard that the Swinson family had pirates somewhere in the distant past, but you never know what to believe. If you are ever want to continue the Levina Swinson branch, let me know. There are dozens of members of this branch living in Central and North Florida and South Georgia under the Batts, Carter, and Smith names. After exchanging messages with Tom Byrd I have finally made the Swinson connection back to North Carolina. I am the g-g-g-great grandson of Jesse Swinson and Nancy Winders Swinson. I think you and I have to go back another generation or two to make our link. It was thanks to your web site and the message I orginally sent you that Tom contacted me and we finalized the connection. I am attempting to prepare a paper on James Swinson, son of Levi, son of Jesse. He moved to Mississippi about 1850 and is the nephew of James Glisson Swinson. It seems that I am uniquely situated to tell his story as his descendants lost contact with both the North Carolina and Texas Swinsons after the War. I am trying to learn about my husband's family tree since I know a lot about mine (Earl isn't all that interested!). I have heard family stories (don't know how much is fact) that Earl's great great and great great great Swinson grandfathers were pirates but no mention of which pirate captain they were with. Also heard family story that Charlie's youngest brother (Jessie) was a warlock! As with all families, even inaccurate information has some basis in truth. I tease Earl about marrying a Celtic girl. I am very Irish and a wee bit Scots with Swiss and Cherokee/Chippawa thrown in, and I even unfortunately have a bit of English in me. Earl is very proud of his English/Swiss heritage and insists there is no Celtic blood in his veins! As anyone of Celtic heritage knows, the English and Celts have no love loss between the two. We love to jab at each other about the "Englishman who married a Celtic girl". But I am determined to find Scots or Irish blood in Earl's veins just so I can harrass him more! Love your website! I received a lead to your web page from Thelma Peters. I am relatively new to the field of genealogy. My main interest at the present time is information about my great, great granddaddy . . . Elder Aaron Heide Davis. My family lineage is from the Elder's second wife, Charlotte Horne. Thelma said she would try to get some old church records (SW Primitive Baptist Church) and copy them for me. Meanwhile she was thinking that the Elder's second wife was Charlotte Howard . . . however, the grave marker in the Burgaw Cemetery reads Charlotte, a name that is very familiar to my family members. She was known as "Ma-Davis" to us. Probably is a mix-up of some sort with such similar names. Meanwhile, I read an article in the Onslow Co. Historical Society Book by Lea King Crews that the Elder's father, Aaron Davis, Sr. was married to Rebecca Marshburn. any information on her family? Also, it was mentioned that Aaron Davis, Srs. brother, Matthew was married to Palmeetta Screws. I have been trying to find out who the parents of Aaron Davis, Sr. & Matthew Davis were . . . any leads? It seems that Onslow Co. is full of our family members. I just need to retire soon (I'm not quite there just yet!), and spend some time in Onslow Co. looking up information and meeting some very interesting people. When my mother and I were in Jacksonville, NC this past summer we had the pleasure of meeting JoAnne Becker at the Onslow Co. Museum. James William Swinson married to Carrie Brown James and Carrie Swinson had at least one son, Theophilus Oliver Swinson (1871-1938) who married Nancy M. Fussell (1880-1967). Theophilus and Nancy Swinson had nine children. My father, Theophilus Clarence Swinson (1918-1987) married Dora Blue Murphy (1923 -still living) both of Duplin County. My father dropped Theophilus when he joined the Army in WWII, so his records from then on are Clarence NMN Swinson. My parents married in Washington, D.C. after the war and had Daniel Lloyd (b.1950 in D.C.), myself, Linda Jean (b. 1952 in D.C.) and Richard Murphy Swinson (b. 1958 in Maryland). I am new at this geneology stuff, so let me know if you would like some documentation and how I can send it to you.
