I am reposting after a few years in case anyone has updated information. My great-great grandfather's name was Michael McHale circa (1838-1883) married to Bridget Kelly in Haslingden, Lancashire. My grandmother told me that they were from Mayo originally. They emmigrated from England to St. Louis, Missouri and appear in the 1880 census here. However, their first three children were born in England, (1861 England census) Richard, Thomas, and Margaret. My great-grandfather's name was James and he was born in St. Louis. Of note, in 1880, William and John McHale live very near to Michael in St. Louis. I assume they are relatives. My grandfather's name was George McHale married to Helen Murphy. Recently, I obtained a marriage certificate that may belong to my Michael and Bridget. This document shows Michael's father's name to be Richard McHale. Any help getting this family back to Mayo? Tom (1855-1939) married Emma O'Brien & had 10 children: James Aloysius McHale(b.18 July 1891 in Wilkes-Barre) married Nora Ward and had children--names unknown to me;Thomas Eugene McHale (born 3 December 1894 in Wilkes-Barre) married Martha Sabal and had a least one son named Timothy Charles McHale born around 1890 in Wilkes-Barre he married Martha Sabal; Emmett Raphael McHale was born on 9 March 1897 in Wilkes-Barre and was a printer for the Wilkes-Barre Publishing Co in 1948; Bebe McHale born circa 1900; Florence McHale worked at the Miner's National Bank in Wilkes-Barre in 1948. Willian Henry McHale (1862-1918) married Bridget Connor and had children: Marion; Joseph was born 2 May 1895 and died 19 April 1958; Clare and Eileen. There were many other McHales I know of, many women, but it would fill many pages. I strongly suggest that just one male in each McHale famly (father, son or cousin) take a DNA test (very simple and not too exspensive)with "Family tree DNA" -- please! |

My Gr,Gr Grandfather was Anthony born 1792 passing in Grenville Quebec, 7-5-1859, his wife was Mary McTague/McTeague, born 1801. Anthony possibly came from Mayo, Mary did come from Cavan, as did her parents
John Joseph McTague & Bridget Sherlock. Anthony & Mary appear in the 1851 Census of Eastern Canada (Quebec),with their children,whom the census were born in Canada,Quebec. Mary,Bartholomew/Bartley-(my Great Grandfather),Margaret,Ann,Catherine,Mary Ann,Anthony,& Bridget (Biddie). They lived in The Gatineau Valley of Quebec until the family dispersed. Son Anthony, had 20 children, Bartholomew (Gr Grand) family moved to the States and British Columbia, Grandfather,Thomas, joined other family members in Stanley, Wisconsin, Bro. Anthony went to Cloquet, Minnesota Margaret went to iron Mountain Mich. other siblings James P., John, & Mary, moved to McBride British Columbia. There is a McKale river named after them in that region. I am not done locating all the family during the time they moved around, but there are McKale's in California, Wisconsin, Quebec, & Alberta, & who knows where else. Are there any McKale/McHale's out there who have knowledge of the descendants of Anthony & Mary McTague. I cannot locate the previous family of Anthony born 1792. They are planning a reunion in the Gatineau Valley, Quebec, in 2012, McKale's will be there. | Comments: | Cincinnati's Hamilton County is on the Ohio River across from Covington, Kentucky. The Ohio River starts in Pennsylvania was a means of travel cheaper than train travel. Most of the County Mayo, Ireland McHales settled in North Eastern Pennsylvania up the Susquehanna River from Baltimore to Lackawana and Luzerne coal mining counties. On the other side of the Appalachian Mountains is the Allegheny River and the start of the Ohio River. There Pittsburg had the biggest steel and iron manufacturing companies in the USA and the Ohio River shipped to the Mississippi River and all over the USA. The ports for Cleveland and Toledo Ohio were the same as Canada-the Saint Lawrence Seaway which was the same for Ontario , Canada. Since Canada was part of the British Empire, it was easier going.
Rhode Island, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New York were all accessed in the same water inlet, Long Island Sound. Just a bit farther south is Delaware Bay with the Delaware River going into Eastern New Jersey and Maryland. But just a bit farther down the Atlantic Coast is the Chesapeake Bay to Baltimore where most of the early Irish first set foot on the land of freedom before the Free Irish county of 1921. They chose the same names over and over so putting their birth year in front of their names helps. We have 1839 Patrick, 1840 Honor (Nora or Onwie) and 1862 John. John is in the city directories all the way down the Ohio River until he stopped long enough in Ironton where miners worked mines there and across the river in West Virginia. After his first child was born he they moved to Cincinnati where the east end had other John and Patrick McHales and a John and Patrick McHale across the Ohio River in Covington, Kentucky. Being McHales, they took in family orphans weathering one natural disaster after another. I'm sure they felt that if it wasn't for bad luck they would have had no luck at all. Yet that belly laugh is so contagious you gotta love the Irish. Love your site! We birthed and raised 4 McHales for the world of McHales. Not a dull moment! |

My grandfather Martin McNicholas, born abt 1877, was from Crumlin (Crimlin),3 miles from Castlebar. Martin and Mary were married at the Chapel of Parke on 6th March 1905. Witnesses were (1) Michael McNicholas & (2) Catherine McHale. On marriage Martin & Mary moved to Lissaniska, near Keelogues when land became available. Patrick from Crimlin, Martin's father, later joined them, presumably after the death of his wife (i believe a Mary Kenny). If anyone can supply further information on the families it would be greatly appreciated. |

What a wonderful site. My grandparents, Michael Joseph McHale and Margaret Dougherty/McHale immigrated from County Mary in 1906-1908. They lived their lives in Baltimore, Maryland. Together they had nine children, Margaret, Catherine, Ellen Theresa (Nellie) John, Michael, James, Richard, Mary Agnes, and Patricia. My father was John. I believe Michael Joseph was born in Knockmore and my grandmother in Corroy. They each had a number of siblings who came to America in the early 1900's. They had a wonderful wholesome life. I can only trace my dad's family back to Michael McHale (1835-1883) married to Bridget (1845-1880). They are buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis. Their children, I think, are Robert, Thomas, Margaretta, Briget, Mary Ellen, Alice, Anna, James and Sarah. James McHale (1873-1910) married Elizabeth Manley. Their children were James, George, and Margaret. George McHale (1903-1963) married Helen Murphy. Their children are Joseph, John, Jean, and Maureen. Joe McHale is my father. Can anyone help me find out where my family came from before they arrived in St. Louis? |

| Comments: | I am the great-grandson of Ellen (McHale) Driscoll, born in Creevy, Crossmolina, Co. Mayo in 1877. She was the daughter of Anthony McHale, widower & farmer, who married Catherine (Loftus) Walsh, widow, in Crossmolina on 13 Feb 1874. Both Anthony & Catherine had children from previous marriages. Anthony McHale was the son of Richard McHale, who was also a farmer.
It would appear that the Walsh & McHale farms in Creevy went to another another Anthony McHale, a possible son from Anthony's first marriage. This property then went to a Paddy Joe McHale of Crossmolina. A message left by a Maertin McHale of London at this site really caught my attention, but I cannot contact him with the info that he left. Anthony McHale's children from his secoind marriage were sent to live with Catherine's sister in South Hadley, Massachusetts after the death of their mother on 28 Jan 1882. All of Catherine's children from her first marriage to Pat Walsh in Creevy, immigrated as well to the Holyoke/South Hadley. If any of this rings a bell with any of you, pleas drop me a line. I would like to know what happened to my great, great grandfather, Anthony McHale. There is no record of his death in Crossmolina. Thank you, Paul |
