I have traced him up to 1920 census in Amesbury, MA.(working in an auto factory). However, Haapajarvi records tell me he died, unmarried, 1925 in Am. I would be interested to change family information if somebody has information about the name Luukinen especially in connection of the municipality of Lumijoki in the Northern Finland, in the vicinity of Liminka? My family branch has its roots in Lumijoki and I would like to know if we have our roots otherwhere in Finland also (before entering the municipality of Lumijoki). I know that there are other Luukinen `branches´ located originally in Oulu (where most of my family members live today), Liminka, Kemi- Tornio and Kemijärvi. Likewise, I am also interested in the origin of the name Luukinen. It may or may not refer to family names like Luukela or Luukila or river called Loukinen in Finnish Lappland. Have been unable to find any info. on Marie except parents names may have been Juho and Fredia. Is Pitzen Finnish?? | Comments: | Beginning my Family History search. I traveled to Finland on business twice this year and visited my Grandfather's and Great Grandfather's farms in Isokyro. I've caught the "bug." Looking for relatives of a previous marriage of my grandfather, Gustaf (Gustav) Ojala. He had one family with Sofia in Ashtabula, OH area in late 1800's who I've never met. When she died, he married Maria Greta Lehtola, my grandmother. Want to know more about my father's half brothers and sisters, and their descendants. I also remember seeing an OJALA who taught "quick draw" techniques to Western movie stars in the 1940's and 1950's. My father thought he was related. Does anyone know anything about him? | Comments: | Hello Harley Laalo! Hiitola and Kaukola are situated in the eastern province of Carelia, in the part of old Finland that since 1944 belongs to Russia. Hiitola is situated on the lake Ladoga (Laatokka in finnish), north-west from the town of Kaekisalmi. If the names have been changed, it is anyway situated near the soyh-western corner of the lake, which is fairly rectangular. Kaukola is somewhere on the same isthmus, I am sorry, I couldn't find it on the map, and we did not study them so well in school, since they did not belong to Finland any more. Also, my family doesn't come from the same area. It is an area with an interestin culture, but all Carelians moved to the remaining Finland in 1944, which was an enourmous effort, both concerning the Carelians, and the rest of the nation. The church registers should be in the National Archives, as well as in Mikkeli regional archives, and probably you'll find them from the Internet, genealogia.com or something.
