| Comments: | Thanks for the web site. I was in the band from 75/76 - 78. I was in the infamous drum line - oh how we were loved by Uncle Chuck! I had the honor of playing, what I believe to be, the first ever quint-toms. I had to make them from an old floor tom that sat un-used in the band room. When Chuck found out that I cut one of the school's drums in half, he threatened to have me arrested! Those drums weighed in at 75 pounds. As a result, every time the band stopped marching, I was allowed to sit down. The original tri-toms were made by the drama teacher's son (sorry, I forget his name). I think they were trashed shortly after I graduated . . .by then, tri and quint toms were being produced that weighed a fraction of the ones I carried. Ah . . .the memories!! |

| Comments: | Happy New Year everyone who visits this fun site! Watching the Rose Parade brings back many fond band memories. High school was a blast because of the music department, and especially the marching band. Band geek? I was, and remain, proud to be one: I watch the Rose Parade each New Years day. I wait for the two college bands to march by, and then promptly turn the TV off. Floats that took months to design and build? Who cares. Equestrians? Just messing up the parade route with, well, you-know-what. Just think: Any parade would be pretty quiet and maybe even boring without music. Marching bands are the most important things in the world..........No, it was fun, and we each got different things from the experience. I Hope you guys get to pick up your instruments now and then and enjoy them.
Happy 2007. Bill, Winnetka, (Reseda), California |

I loved the '66 Rose Parade photo too -- a couple of my friends marched in that. I spent 10th and 12th grade at Monroe, and have a lot of happy memories centered around the band room. (Our teacher was quite a character!) I remain lifelong friends with one of the clarinet players. Thanks so much for making this site! |

| Comments: | For Alumni of the Sepulveda JHS Band (circa early 1970s):
Please help us respond to the following tribute to our Band Director Tommy Johnson! To Tommy Johnson fans, students, former students and well-wishers: [First of all, this is meant to be a surprise as best we can keep it, so please don't tell Mr. Johnson. By all means however, do tell anyone who you think may be interested in participating in this project.]. Many of us have shared an appreciation of Tommy Johnson as a great player, an outstanding teacher and an inspiring mentor for many years. If you have experienced his teaching first-hand whether it was in private study or whether you were in his tuba studio at the University of Southern California or University of California at Los Angeles or even if you were in his band class at Dana Junior High School or Sepulveda Junior High School, you know what type of a person he was and is. TOMMY JOHNSON Four of Tommy Johnson's former students (Jim Self, Ron Davis, Norm Pearson and Gene Pokorny) are organizing a collection of "letters of appreciation" for him. If you would like to participate in a note of appreciation to Tommy Johnson, or know someone who would, please pass this information along. Even if you did not study with him, if you appreciate the influence he may have had on your playing due to the sounds you heard on the thousands of movie soundtracks he recorded, you may want to send a note as well. We would like to take these letters, memorabilia, photos if you have them , perhaps some unreturned music or a mouthpiece!, etc., and bind them into an appropriate portfolia or memento book and present it to Mr. Johnson. After speaking with his wife, Pat, she thinks he would appreciate hearing from people, especially his former students. She says he likes to hear about what they are doing and how their families are doing. So many times in life we wish could have said something to somebody who helped influence us in various ways. None of us is getting any younger. Please take a few minutes, write something down and send to: TJ Letter c/o Gene Pokorny 411 North Forest Avenue Oak Park, Illinois 60302 It would be better to have a printed or hand-written note rather than e-mail. If you must use e-mail, send it to csotuba@cso.org. Thank you for participating in this very worthy celebration. Sincerely, Jim Self, Ron Davis, Norm Pearson and Gene Pokorny |

| Comments: | Didn't realize the guest book was back on-line. I guess I didn't check in the past year. Greetings, fellow Vikes Band Alumni. I have great memories of the Band and all the activities we had. Of course, we were the school nerds! I was in Band from 68 to 71 playing percussion with my good friend Bob Grant and many others. We had three different Band Directors during our years, Mr. Morosic, "knock it off" Silverman and Uncle Chuck. We had a goal of getting kicked out every band period. We were very good at it. Our behavior paved the way for the youngsters such as Richard Nance, Dave Kaplan and Jon Ferris. I especially remember our Friday TP adventures including the time we got the Choir director Mr. Miller. I also rememeber playing in the School musicals Bye Bye Birdie and Finian's Rainbow. We had an earthquake aftershock during the second act in 1971. Since my experience at Monroe, I have played in over 35 different musical productions. My family and I recently relocated to Colorado Springs where I play with the Little London Winds. Love to hear from old friends. Check out the Roger's drum ad that we did in 1970 that I sent to Michelle. |

| Comments: | It's been a coupla years, and I am thrilled to read that everyone is still finding the website. Much has happened since I last made an entry, and all is well here. My youngest son has traded his trumpet in for an electric guitar. He seems to be a complete natural. He's finished Middle school and is enrolled as a Freshman in ACHS in Camarillo, California. The Guitar and Football split his time currently.
QUESTIONS: 1. Is there any word of a 25th year reunion for the class of 1980? 2. Is Kathy Henshaw-Skalik anywhere out there? We lost touch after children, and I'd like to find her agian. The last I heard, she was still in Kansas. 3. Has anyone heard from Julie Weinstock? We parted ways in H.S., and I'd like to touch base again... She left early to attend a specialized trade school, and I'd love to know how she's doing. SIGHTINGS: 1. Saw Solarzano (Zano) working within a Federal corporation! Way to go!! 2. I know that the MilkMan is working for VCFPD protecting lives and property.... We're all so proud! If you find this site, I hope that you will add something. So much time has passed since most of us have been together. From time to time I ask a question of friends or associates... "How many of your 'close' friends from high school have you maintained communications".... For the most part the answer is 'none'. Time and Distance aren't a factor when we communicate via the internet... |

| Comments: | G'day mates! I played trumpet from 1959 to 1961 mainly in the band. Back then Bob Benson was on drums, Jim Bennett on trombone Susie Haberman - Piano and Patti Siefert on clarinet and James Maxwell along with Tom Steinhoffer and Bob Senescu on trumpet. Sorry I can't remember the rest of you. Uncle John Deichman was our conductor/mentor.
After leaving the army (1967), I returned to Pierce college and studied Animal Husbandry which eventually took me to Australia working on a sheep/cattle station. I've had a checkered career since Monroe. Currently living for the last 22 years in a small tightly knit community of around 300 population in the lower south east of South Australia. Employed by Kimberly-Clark and soon to retire, to start up my own general store in the community. |

| Comments: | Mickey,
Thanks for resurecting the guestbook. Looking at the pictures of the '73 marching band, I remembered spending what seems like the entire summer of 73 in Jon Ferris's garage with all our drums. Jon, Jerome Stocks and I dismantled them all the way down to the shells, removed the black tape stripes, cleaned them up with acetone, then painted them with glass stain to make them red on the top, silver in the middle, and blue on the bottom. We also painted the bass drum heads too! We did it all with our own money. Damn that was a lot of work! I'm surprised we didn't poison ourselves from the fumes! Richard Nance, '74 |
