| Comments: | Your research on Salem is much better than your work on European witchcraft. The figure of nine million victims of witchcraft trials is quite outdated and now know to be a gross exaggeration; current scholars, such as Levack, put the figure at 100,000 to 200,000.
It is important to realize also that there was no single monolithic Christian response to witchcraft. Witch trials did not really start in earnest until the 14th century. Before the year 1000, in particular, most Christian writers did not think much about witchcraft. In fact, the worst witch prosecutions were under secular laws and secular governments, during the so-called renaissance. Spain, for example, saw rather few witch executions under the Inquisition. Unfortunately, the sterotypical view of medieval Europeans as filthy, ignorant savages still reigns supreme. Now there's a prejudice that needs to be erased. |

Jr. I would just like to tell you that there was a Mary Lacey Jr. who was tried for witch craft and condemed. She was only in for a short time. She was 15 at the time. In a record of her trial she said that the devil appeared to her in the shape of a horse. I am also a decendent of Bridget bishop. It is really easy to find information on her but it is really hard to find info on the other 3! |
