I get tired just riding my sportster to work and back (46 mile round trip), so I can imagine a ride like that must be exhausting...BTW I have the exact same sportster as you, same color and everything, except mine is a 1994. I'm happy to hear that the machine is rugged enough to handle that kind of wear.

Comments:Dude:

Thanks for the GREAT read.

I'm 51, live in Calgary, Alberta, and plan on making a run up the Alaskan Highway this July, so, I was 'Googling' to look for folks who'd "been-there-done-that" and came across your site.

I spent a relaxing Sunday afternoon reading through your adventure.

Living in Alberta and working in the Pipeline Inspectiion business, I've traveled as far North as Fort Saint John, BC numerous times, but the very FIRST time I made that trip, right at Valleyview, I missed the Hwy 43 turns into Hwy 34 sign, and ended up driving North, .... and yes, those MOOSE can get rather big :)

Oh, as for the wooden train trestle you rode under, it is an active line, and the trestle, called the Rochfort Bridge, is the longest wooden trestle bridge in Western Canada, spanning some 736 m (2414 feet).

http://www.mayerthorpe.ca/visiting - (near bottom of page, small photos though) or

http://www.railroadforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7050 - shows widening of Highway 43 taking place

Anyway, thaks again for taking the time and effort to put up your Alaska Adventure site.

Regards:

John Stewart

Comments:Dude, ... thanks for the great read :) I live in Calgary, Alberta, and plan on heading up the Alaska Highway this summer with 4 other riders, all 5 of us on Harleys.

Was doing some research this afternoon, Googled "Alaska Highway, motorcycle', and stumbled across your web site. Spent an enjoyable afternoon following you along your journey.

I've been as far North as Ft. St. John, BC numerous times, for work, and the first trip up, at Valleyview, I have made that same Hwy 43 \ Hwy 34 miss and ended up heading North on Hwy 49. (those Moose get pretty damned BIG)

And yes, that wooden train trestle you saw, called Rochfort Bridge, that crosses Hwy 43 near Sangudo, Alberta is on a regularly used line, and is the longest wooden trestle bridge in Western Canada, spanning some 736 m (2,414 feet).

Comments:Many years ago 1976 I met Norm Good. He and a friend went to Chicken . Many years later before the secound gent passed I met him, I have to look around here for his name, but, the story was always with me from the time I met Norm. They panned and went back many times. When I met the second gent we were in the VFW having a beer and as I listened to this man talk about his time in Alaska I asked him if he knew Norm and he basicly told the very same story I heard 20 yrs. before. Before he left he pulled out a sandwich bag with about an inch deep of gold. he gave me a pinch of placer. And since I have been planning on going. I also have names of folks to contact up there. I was planning on taking my 94 Dodge 2500, cummins, trailer and such but now think maybe my 84 FXRT. just not sure, L4,L5, S1 shot due to masonry and Army..All I did was punch up Alaska, chicken and found you and haven't stopped the read, a great style and refreshing, Book form and See ya on Jon Steward, The Fxrt is a bit heavy and the bugs I heard as you said are ravenous, You have me thinking hard about this. The truck is a stone wagon but it will haul more beer.. Thanks for the ride, Robert

Hey. I am a 23 year old navy man stationed in Norfolk, VA. I recentley bought a sportster custom 883 as my very first motorcycle, and I cant stay off the thing. Your story was awsome, and gives me some inspiration. I dont know if I'll ever make to the Arctic Circle, but I would defintely like to make it to Alaska some day. I am trying to become a true motorcyclist, not a weekend warrior per se. Its a whole new world for me. Havent been through any real bad weather or cold yet, but I am looking forward to it all. I dont know if you check this guest book much, but if you do, shoot me an email with any tips of wisdom or anything.

sincerely,

Comments:That was a really good story. Sometimes I felt I was there. I look forward to the day I can take a journey like that. I have been in the Navy for a little over 20 years and am looking forward to retirement. Will still have to work but time spent like that is what I am aiming for. When I was a youngun I remember dreaming of riding my motorcycle all over the country and seeing it from there on the back of a bike. I have since modified that dream to include riding in all 50 states and having been stationed in Hawaii I have gotten the hardest one done. (since you can't ride your bike to get there you have to cheat and either rent one or as I did be stationed there and own one) Alaska will be longest one to get to since it will mean I have to ride there to get it. But like you in your story and eating the salmon fresh from the river, I want to taste food like a Maine lobster, Texmex, cajun all from the source. And see sights you can only get from the top of two wheels.
Thanks for the tale and next time I roll through Valpo on my way home from the base in Illinois I'll think of you and your journey. With a smile and a little twinge of jealousy that I still need to go there too.
Thanks.
Glenn

He has lived by himself on the river for years now and continues to have an unusual outlook on life. He is 73 and still climbing mountains! He broke a rib on his bicycle and said it was because the bike would not cooperate? He rode his Moto Guzzi to Yukatan once! I guess I get my sence of adventure from him.
I found your site by looking at Google images of the Alaskan Marine Highway. I am going to Kaianga, Alaska to help drive some fishing boats back from there to Port Angles, WA.
I am only half way into your adventure and can't stop reading the story.
My dad has hept a journal for the past 40 years in a sprial note book. I can only imagin what hind of story it will make one day.
I an glad to have had the pleasure to come across you story, I hope you are well and still enjoying life so the rest of us can hear about it!

It should be made into a book. You have a knack for writing and could expand on your experiences and thoughts to fill the book 'out'. Heck just contact publishers and send them the email address and get their take on it and if they like what they see..let them foot the bill.

But to answer your question: Just click the page "Doing the Dempster" and see my plastic jug. THAT was the long haul without gas... The pipeline Haul Road actually had fewer miles between fill-ups. Your LTD would really have loved an old gold rush road!
Have fun.

Comments:Mike - Thanks for taking the time to record your experiences on your trek north. There's something special about your narrative. The style is pleasant, but the details really tell a more complete story of the experience. Having trekked across the US on my Triumph Bonneville, I can relate to many of the experiences and feelings you describe. This is an important work - a fine bit of important writing. You do more than tell a story of a motorcycle trip, you pass on details of the *experience* of a motorcycle trip. There is a big difference.
I couldn't read it all this time, but I'll certainly be back for more. I am hoping to be going to Kotzebue (on Bering Strait) soon and am learning quite a bit about Alaska. Your experience adds quite a bit of depth to my studies. Thanks

Sporty instead, it's really a more fun ride, but not as comfortable. It is however much heavier and harder to control in the gravel. I always considered the 883 as more of a barhopper, never really considered riding it that far until now. I used to ride a 76 sporty back in the early 80's and did make a few trips on it quite comfortably. Thanks for the entertaining and educational story.

Comments:I thoroughly enjoyed the hours put in to read your Alaska adventure. The pictures are spectacular on my 17-inch laptop computer.

I traveled by plane to Prudhoe Bay for a work project in 1971 and my dad helped build an aircraft hanger in Watson Lake in 1943, so I have been interested in Alaska for some time. I have decided to travel there with my large 1999 Yamaha Royal Star Venture motorcycle in the summer of 2007. Maybe I will be accompanied at least part of the way by my nephew and his friend on BMW Dakar 650 cycles.

I bought my first motorcycle, a 1977 BMW R100/7 boxer, when I was 66 yrs old and bought my 2nd motorcycle in Aug of this year. I rode my BMW to northern Minnesota to my 50th anniv graduation from high school and then down to Dallas, TX to a project meeting and then home for about 4, 000 miles in Sept 2004. I rode my Yamaha from Columbus, OH to Helena, MT in mid August of this year. I made the 1920 miles home in four long riding days.

I haven't mastered taking pictures while riding, for it seems I'm buy the view with no place to stop before I decide to take a picture. Somehow you have figured this out.

Thanks for such an interesting and funny account of your adventures.

I just bought a used 2000 Sportster XLH883 and I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's my daily driver and weekend cruiser in the summertime.

Good luck on your future travels!!

Why publish a CD? Sign a book deal instead and sell thousands of copies of your story telling how you rode your Sportster and ended up sittin' on top of the world!!!

I love your site, and appreciate the efforts you have made to share your journeys. I already have you bookmarked, and plan to add a link to your site from mine. I am planing a trip along the Alaskan Highway next year. I have taken numerous motorcycle trips; but the Alaska trip will probably be by van. I am from Milwaukee, the home of Harley, having been born here, and having lived here all of my life (so far). I hope you made the Harley birthday bash. If not, you can see what you missed at http://www.notpurfect.com/travel/harley/index.html
There are also shots of my first ever motorcycle trip, back in 1978 at http://www.notpurfect.com/travel/yellowstone/trip.html
I thank you for your pages, particularly the section about the Alaska trip, and wish you many interesting times, and much adventure (though not too much) in the future.

Nothing like your trip though. I'm a "returning" MC having been away since mid '92 until last month. Bought me an '06 Suzuki DL650. Feels like I'm a beginner again. Got Social Security in January and said to my lady that it was time to get another bike to keep me "young." Your trip was 10 years ago. What have you done in the last decade "adventure-riding" wise? Your writing style is supurb. Your the kinda guy I'd love to spend a day with sharing life experiences and philosophy. Get back to me if you care to, I don't doubt we have a lot of common interests. I too am an engineer, getting the education a little later than most folks (U of TX '68, Vanderbilt '71, U of W (Madison) '89 and CalTech '92). Retired out into the middle of the Mojave in '04. Comments:Mike, What a story ! There's no substitute for the king of the Road - "The Sportster " . I've had my 1960 XLCH since early 1974 and a basket case 1957 XL since 1976. Your chronicles bring back some of my happiest memories of riding ;up thru New England to Canada - Montreal, Ontario to and around James Bay over to Manitoba along the Churchill River destined for Lake Athabasca and beyond to the Great Slave Lake .Eight of us started out from Northwestern New Jersey , my 1960 XlCH , a 1965 XlCH a 1966 XlCH , a 1967 XlH , a 1968 XlH , a 1973? norton , a 1972 triumph and a 1971 honda 750 . There were no hogs with us because no one rode them , they were like the indians they couldn't get out out of town with out breaking down . Somewhere up in N.Y. state , the honda rider crapped out on us and turned around with much needed camping supplies on his bike. When we got back , he said he couldn't take the constant blasting / racing that we were doing . We always tried to make the most out of empty roads and make time at night so we would get on the throtle often , but we would always pull over later and wait for all straglers!. Since then i've ridden up twice to Laconia and into Canada , three times to North Carolina ( twice in Hurricanes to Hatteras ) once to Florida and many rides thru Pennslyvania . Buy far the most fun was with my friends riding , but there is nothing like traveling alone on your Sportster. I loved when you talked about your 66 XlCH , truley one of the best years of Sportmans, but I also got a kick out of your talk about Notre Dame , Go Irish !! . I hope you still keep ridin that Sportman . You brought a smile to my face in this time of all these Poseur Glide soft tail short time owners in their doo rags and white wall tires!! All we ever needed was the old duffel bag , garbage bags for rain suits and a sleeping bag . God bless.

It is one of my fondest memories. My father was a Harley dealer here in Appleton Wi. He passed away a couple years ago.
Your stories bring back the memories.
Make the CD and put me down for a copy if they are for sale.

Comments:Mike,

I found your site by googling the demster highway and arctis crossing.

I've been there four times myself and loved it everytime. Your enthusiastic pose for the camera is just how I have felt each time.

My reason for searching for information on this location is that I really want to travel there again.BTW...the times I've been there were in the winter! In a car, of course. On a timed rally through the area, all the way up to Tuktoyatuk, NWT, another 300 miles up the road/frozen river.

I am glad your experience was documented. And I hope you brag about it all the time.

My best,

Jack

Comments:A post on the bmwsporttouring.com discussion board referred to your site as the best Arctic Circle ride tale on the internet - and that's no exaggeration!

Once I began reading it, I couldn't stop and read from start to finish on first visit. Great adventure. Well told.

Will be borrowing liberally from your experience as I plan a trip to Canada and Alaska for early Summer of '05.

Comments: Wow! Great trip. I told my best friend back in the early '80's that we should ride to Alaska. Twice he backed out on me. Maybe someday........at least reading your website, I feel like I did ride there!
I hope nowadays you have a digital camera. Never have I heard of somebody exposing so much film! Do you have any other trips planned? Still riding that Sportster? JUst bought an "04 1200C this year. Love it, but my trusty old 1988 FLHS with 148,000 miles gets the nod for long distance. Thanks for the website. PS.....only publish this on a CD if you have more pictures!

Your story was a wonderful read and I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. Thanks for making it available for people like myself to read and enjoy. Best of luck on future trips.

All the best,

Without going into too much detail, following Mike made it much easier, Mom and Dad had been through enough that anything I did was not a big deal. I will give Mike credit, him having a bike made it easy for me to get my first one at 15 1/2.
I'd better check this more often, to see what other works of fiction he is writing.

I grew up in the Valpo area, rode my 72 GT380 Suzuki at VU college and to the N side of Chicago for 5am weekend Army drills in the early 80s. I ended up in Texas married to a San Antonio Rose. Comments:I have been reading the story of your trip for the last few days. I just want to tell you that I think it is great.
I have a 2003 Sporty 883 converted to 1200 and I love it. My daughter (9) went with me on a trip this past spring and she had a ball. we only rode about 1300 miles, but I didn't think that was too bad for a 9 yr. old. My wife and I are leaving 8/8/04 for Tennessee. We are both looking forward to it. We live in Ft. Worth, Tx so it will be a little jaunt. Not nearly like you took. I have to tell you that I envy your ability to just take off into the wild yonder!! Your family should be very proud of your pioneering spirit and dedication to getting the adventure done. I would love to take a trip like that someday.

I am actually stationed in Peru Indiana(not too far south). Thank you for putting this down on paper. I think you should definatly put this on cd. Some people might actually respect the next Motorcycle rider they come across.(Maybe they will even think twice before cutting someone off and causing a near death experience. Ride safe, and watch out for those Indiana drivers!

Comments:Great Site for us Sportster folks. I'm a 26 year career Naval Officer who has been riding for about 31 years. I currently ride a 2000 1200C Screaming Eagle Sportster that I truly love. Now I'm looking to add my personality to the bike. Anyway, I found your site while trying to find a shop in the southern CA area that will do a good job for me as I don't want a shade-tree mechanic doing the work. If I wanted that I would do the job myself. I'm looking to add a slightly chopped springer front end, Wetdreamz pipes and a 200mm rear tire. Of course that means modifications to the frame and rear fender. I've seen lots of well done sportsters but none in the San Diego area. I've only been stationed here for 3 months but there are lots of bikers. Feel free to pass my email address to anyone who might be able to help me out.
Keep up the good work on this great site.
Best Wishes,
Diesel Dan

Comments:Mike. Loved the read. In my younger days I had a '73 1000 cube Sportster. Kickstart - and brakes on the wrong side. It had the stock 14" HD sissy bar on the back. It was perfect for mounting my old olive drab Boyscout backpack. With my bedroll on top of that, and road-pegs, I laid back and rode in royal luxury. Check it out before your next trip.

Comments:Dear Mike,
I spent parts of the last 3 days reading your "ride".
I was laughing out loud so often my other half sent the website to his computer so he could read it too. What a great trip. I have been planning a trip to Alaska (in a
Ford Econline w/ a Turtle Top, classified as a motorhome
but really just a van w/ a fold down bench/bed). I was
surfing Google for personnal accounts of driving trips
NORTH and lucked into your experience. I found it very
rewarding as I too like to get away from the tourists and
camp behind DO NOT CAMP HERE signs. I got more (both emotionally and "rode" knowledge) from your site then I got from all the others I have been reading the last 2 weeks.
Thank you X3. I was very happy to learn that this trip can
be made without spending $200.00 a night in a motel.
The pictures are beautiful, and yes, you should put it on CD
The more folks who share your experiences and humor the better. I'm 53 and have driven around the lower 48 6 times.
It is soul enriching and for me the need to travel to sites
unseen is like a hunger that must be fed. Travel on and good
health.
P.S. Tell wife Judy thanks for being understanding/supportive. It is indeed a rare woman who
lets her man explore the call of the wild.
