| Comments: Hello, fellow Boothbys. My ancestor, August Peter Boothby, was born in 1834 in Hamburg (Harburg) Germany (Prussia). He married Emily Sarah Wilson in London in 1859. It is my understanding that his parents or grandparents had moved to Germany from England for health problems, to I believe this arm of the Boothby family had only been in Germany for as little as one generation. August Peter Boothby emigrated to California, arriving in Gualala (Mendocino County) in 1869, then moving to San Francisco. I am trying to trace his ancestors in Germany and/or earlier than that, England. I have information that August Peter Boothby's father MAY have been named William Matthias Boothby and he might have been a ship's captain. | Comments: To avoid muddling me with any other Nick Boothby, I was christened Nicholas Lorimer David James Boothby soon after my birth on 23 May 1941 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. My twin sister is Janine Penelope Russell (Boothby) Thomas.
But our parents were English. My father Squadron Leader James Robert Maitland Boothby D.F.C. was a Royal Air Force hurricane fighter pilot who, after the Battle of Britain, was sent to Canada to train Canadian fighter pilots. James was the second son of (Royal Navy) Captain Frederick Lewis Maitland Boothby, who helped design the first British tanks in WW I, and who was married to Lady May Katherine Louise (Pery) Boothby, daughter of the 4th and elder sister of the 5th Earl of Limerick (also Viscount Glentworth & Baron Foxford). [As an aside the 5th Earl, Edmund (Mark) Colquhoun Pery and his wife Angela Olivia (born Trotter), Countess of Limerick were both G.B.E.'s & C.H.'s - meaning Knight & Dame Grand Cross of the British Empire and Companions of Honour -- then remarkably the only non-Royal married couple ever to have been awarded these two high distinctions! He was Chairman of the British Medical Research Council 1952-60 and of the Territorial & Auxiliary Forces Association 1949-54. She held top positions in the British Red Cross Society from 1939 to 1974, when she succeeded Prince Philip, Duke of Edimburgh as Chairman of Council. She also chaired the Standing Commission of the International Red Cross.] My mother was Penelope June (Symons) Boothby whose father was Major Owen Symons. He fought in the Boer War and WW I in the famous Gloucestershire Regiment, and was related to Major General Sir William Penn-Symons - the first British General to be killed in the Boer War, whose death energised Canadian volunteers to join in defending the British Empire against the Boers. [My mother Penelope later married George Ingr, second son of General Sergej Ingr, Commander-in-Chief of the Czechoslovakian Army and Czech Minister of Defence during WW II. As well as being a British K.C.B., meaning Knight Grand Cross of the Bath, he was a French Knight of the Legion of Honour and a Commander of the United States Legion of Merit.] My grandfather Captain Frederick Boothby R.N. was a first cousin of Robert John Graham Boothby, as Fred's father Alexander Cunningham Boothby and Bob's father Sir Robert Tuite Boothby were brothers. Bob Boothby was the Member of Parliament for East Aberdeenshire for 34 years before he became in 1958 one of Britain's first Life Peers as Lord Boothby (Baron Boothby) of Buchan and Rattray Head. Bob had been Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, then Winston Churchill, (1926-29) and Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food (1940). Bob Boothby was one of the "Troublesome Young Men" in Lynne Olsen's 2007 book of that name. Bob, Harold Macmillan and a handful of others were "the rebels who brought Churchill to power and helped save England". Indeed Bob Boothby's 1978 autobiography is entitled "Recollections of a Rebel"! The posthumous 1991 biography "Bob Boothby - a Portrait" by Robert Rhodes James was written by the same famous author who wrote biographies of Lord Randolph Churchill in 1959, of Winston Churchill in 1970, of Prince Albert in 1983, of Anthony Eden in 1986, of King George VI in 1998, and who edited Winston Churchill's lifetime speeches in 1980. When the Royal Air Force transferred my father back to England in 1943, my mother, twin sister and I soon followed in a troop ship carrying U.S soldiers to war in Europe. On board each twin was allocated a G.I. "nanny"! In England I was sent, aged 7, to boarding school at Boxgrove in Guilford, Surrey. This was the school attended by Christopher Robin (of Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet fame), the son of A. A. Milne, who never forgave his father for all the teasing he received there. After 18 months in Great Neck, Long Island and 2 years in Nicosia, Cyprus, (where my mother's brother, Jack Symons O.B.E. was Colonial Secretary and - briefly - Acting Governor), my sister and I returned to boarding school in England. I went to Blundell's School in Tiverton, Devon which was founded in 1604, the year after Queen Elizebeth I died. After leaving school I spent 17 years in central Africa, first in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in the British Colonial Service, and then in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) where my three children were born. We left there as virtual refugees in 1976; and never would hve been allowed back to Canada except for the fact that I was Canadian-born. My father James married again in 1953 to Sylvia June Morris. Their daughter (my half sister) is Ailsa Katherine Maitland (Boothby) Richardson, who married and has children, but is now divorced. She lives on the Isle of Wight. Their son (my half brother) is Robert Boothby who lives in Brighton, England. He is actually younger than my son Roderick & daughter Olivia, whose uncle he is! My three children are: Roderick David Boothby (born 1970), now living in San Francisco U.S.A, with his American wife Cindy (nee Barnes) and daughters Caitlin and Andrea; Olivia Penelope (Boothby) Steedman (born 1971), still living in Toronto with her husband Mark and sons Benjamin, William and Colin; and Alexander Kenneth Boothby (born 1974), still living in Toronto with his companion Janine Short. I'll expand on this later. I have a detailed genealogical chart showing Boothby ancestors as far back as 1114, including a signatory of England's Magna Carta. I wear a gold signet ring with the Boothby crest of a lion's paw and the long-winded Boothby motto "Mors Christi, Mors Mortis Mihi", which is translatable as "The death of Christ, the death of deaths to me". |

According to my research Grant Hall was born 12 Feb 1872 in Coles County Illinois. and passed away in Calico Rock, Arkandas. He was married to Lula B. Lofton about 1910. Their children are Lofton, Damon, Paul W., Grant L., and Rebecca Boothby.
According to my research, Grant Hall's 1st spouse was Nancy Ellen Blankenship, married about 1888. She did about 1914. According to my records Grant Hall Boothby was the son of Josiah Stewart Boothby and Susan Yates. |

| Comments: Hi There family members!!! I am a descendent of the Maine Boothby's by way of Massachusetts. We have our own little wing down here. Some of our 2nd Cousins still live in Maine. My Great Uncle "LLoyd Meserve" Boothby was a Cornish/Limington farmer and also worked for H.P.HOOD. He always seemed to come through with the ice cream for our reunions in Plymouth, MA.
My Great-Grandfather John Russell Boothby arrived in Randolph,Massachusetts in 1922-23 with Lloyd,and Dorothy stayed in Maine. Aunt Clara came to MA with John and 2nd wife ADA(Hartford), and her son Elwin. Both had lost their spouses to the great Flu. Together John and ADA had My Grandfather Randolph Orman who passed in 1986, there were also Uncle Harold who resides in Randolph, and Aunt Mary who died in the 1950's. My Grandparents would only have one child John Randolph Boothby Sr., my dad. There are 4 boys and no girls. I was 1st (1962), John Randolph Boothby Jr(1970),from our mother "Linda" and from his 2nd wife There were Thomas Andrew(1975) and Robert Orman (1976). Dad currently resides in FLA. with 3rd wife "MA". I am very proud of my Boothby heritage. We are a scattered but strongly holding family. |

| Comments: Hi, having done a bit of research I now know my Boothbys are from Horncastle, Lincolnshire. They moved to Hull in Yorkshire in the late 1800's. Then to Nottinghamshire in the 1960's.

My father, Anthony John William Boothby, was born in Conningsby, Lincs. My grandfather, William Henry Boothby was born 17th October 1904 and lived in Sandy, Bedfordshire. Worked on the railways. My great grandfather, James William Boothby, born 1873 in Wigtoft, Lincs. Served as a Police Constable. His father, Henry Boothby, born 1843 in Wigtoft, Lincs. William Boothby, 1807, in Sutterton, Lincs. Benjamin Boothby, 1774, Bolinbroke, Lincs. His father, William Boothby, but I have no further information. If anyone can give me more details I will be most delighted. Steve. |

| Comments: I was born in 1953 in Fayville, MA. My father, George R. Boothby was born in Marlboro, MA in 1924. My grandfather Boothby, not certain of his first name came from somewhere in Maine. He left my dad with relatives, shortly after his birth, when my grandmother died. My father was raised by my grandmother's family, the Phillipo's in Fayville, MA. My father is now almost 81 years old and never know his dad or anything about him.
I would appreciate any information on my grandfather who reportedly returned to Maine in 1924. Thanks |
