| Comments: | My great great grandmother, Carmela Torchia (b-Nov 1857 San Demetrio, Cosenza, Calabria, Italy, d-1941 103 years old! in Brooklyn, was the daughter of Vincenzo Torchia and Tommasina Chimento also of San Demetrio. I am trying to find more about Vincenzo Torchia (born around 1830-1840?). All of you can download a free genealogy program I use called Personal Ancestral File (PAF) from familysearch.org and I learn a lot from the Ellis Island site looking up surnames. The Torchia name must have been very special because my family kept that name for their children for 2 more generations. |

My grandfather's brother Vito Torchia lived in Sersale, Calabria, and has many decendents that are still living there. I was also born in Magisano, but moved to Rochester, New York when I was 11 (34 years ago). My great-grandfather (Francesco Torchia) actually lived in Pennsylvania for a while, but moved back to Magisano before my grandfather was born. I know there are some Torchia's in there area, but they pronounce their name differently (Tor-sha). We still use the Italian pronunciation (Tork-eeya). Would be great to find other relatives. |

| Comments: | Hi, I am Enrico salvatore Torchia. my Father, Francino Tomasso Torchia came to Durban, South Africa when he was a baby with his father, Augustino Torchia. His mother went back to italy when he was a baby and he never saw her again. Augustino opened a shoe-making shop in West Street Durban and lokked after Frank until his death from TB when Frank was about 10. Frank was then put in a children's home until he was 17, when he went into the army. When he came out, he trained as a brick layer and married Zelma Joseph and they had 3 children, Antonio Augustino, belinda, and myself. My dad died in 1982 at age 54. I and my family still live with my mother in the house in Hillary, Durban that my father built onto (designed and did most of the brick-laying himself). I am so interested to find out how many Torchias are scattered all over the world! |

My father's name was Francino Tomasso Torchia. he came to South Africa when he was a baby in the late 1920s with his father Augutino Torchia and his mother, who soon returned to italy, so he didn't remember her. His father set up a shoe shop in West Street Durban and cared for Frank until his death from TB when Frank was about 10. Becuase he had no relatives in Durban, he was put into a children's home and joined the army when he was 17. After coming out, he trained as a brick layer, and married Zelma Joseph. They had 3 children, Antonio Augustino, Belinda, and me, Enrico Salvatore Torchia. My father said that when his father came to SA he was quite wealthy, but that he gambled away the money. My mother says that early in their marriage, Frank was sent some money from the sale of their family home in Italy, after his mother died. Frank died in 1982 at the age of 54 of a heart attack, and Zelma still lives with me and my family (wife Shirley and 16 year old daughter Gina) in the house in Hillary, Durban, that they moved into in the 1970s and built extensions himself (I remember him laying bricks very fast and accurately, standing on one leg with his crutches (he'd had his leg amputated)). The photo of your grandfather looks very much like my father as a young man, and also like me. I will send you pictures of me and my family if you would be interested. By the way, I have been earning my living as a clown for the past 25 years. |

I know my grandfather spent time in Argentina during this time, as I see quite a few Torchia's from Argentina here. We also have cousins in London, Ontario as I remember visiting them as a child. I see a couple of people here are from the Toronto/Montreal area. There may be a connection there somewhere. My grandfather and grandmother have since returned to Italy. My paternal grandmother was Anna Torchia from Catanzaro, Calabria. She married Antonio "Tony" Guzzo, also from Catanzaro. They had a lot of family in Pennsylvania, so they lived there for a while then settled in Woburn, MA. I believe my grandmother's family emigrated from Albania to Italy. | Comments: | my name is Marcello Torchia and I live in Rome Italy. William Torchia was my uncle, my father's cousin.He used to live in Berkley 2218 Stuart Street. I remember very well him and his wife Rosina. We got together all the times he came to Italy. He used to write me and to send me comic strip from US as well as Italian journals published for the Italian community.
My grandfather Vittorio Filomena(my mother's father) who was a loyer, visited him in US and spend almost 2 years in Berkley working for William, then he went back to Italy. When William came to Italy, we have been together in Verbicaro at Vittorio's place. After he died I lost all the contacts with his family. Few years ago I was in San Francisco for vacation and I went in Stuart Street hoping to meet somebody from his family. | Comments: | This is strange, I have googled the name Torchia several times and never saw this site. I was wondering if anyone had a way to confirm my Grandfathers birthplace. I am going to Italy next year and would like to see where he went so many times.
My Grandfathers name was Guglielmo(William)Torchia. He was born August 29,1889 in Verbicaro, Cosenza, Calabria(Although I have seen a few articles on him where he claimed to be "Sicilian born.") He came through Ellis Island and was said to have sailed on a ship out of Naples. He took a train across the country with a couple he met on the ship. He settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. Now things become a blur. He was in business with A. P. Giannini and handled foreign exchange at the SF Bank of Italy.(I know they were friends because he used to tell me stories about them together and when Giannini passed away in 1949 he left my grandfather 2000 shares of B of A and also TA stock) As Bank of Italy could not make business loans, they opened a bank across the street from the SF Branch. I recall he told me it was called the "Bank of Stockton" because it was on the corner of Columbus and Stockton Streets. However, there is nothing I can find tying the two except a magazine article he told me was about all the Italians he set up in business. Grandpa helped many Italians get to America, has a plaque dedicated to him for helping save the S. F. Opera, set up many Italians in business, used to bring gobs of money to Italy about three times a year, and was known by many in the Bay Area Italian community. He lived with his second wife Rosina in Berkeley(near U. C.). He imported cheese, wine and olive oil from Italy. My Dad's name was Frank and I had one Uncle-August. My Mom's name was Angelina Bellasano. By chance does anyone know anything more about him? Especially, can they confirm the Calabria birth site. Ciao e Grazie |

| Comments: | Hello.... It has been really interesting reading all these Torchia posts. My grandparents, Antonio and Concetta Torchia came to the U.S. from Cosenza, Calabria around 1906. My grandmother Concetta's maiden name was Faselle. (sp.?) She was also from Cosenza. They eventually settled in Camp 42 (coal mining camp) in Columbus, Kansas and raised seven children, one of which was my dad. I decided to post something here because I saw a post listed on February 5, 2006 by "Don Ligon, Sr., E-mail address Ligon50@Hotmail.com". I tried to email Don Ligon but the hotmail email address was no longer active. If Mr. Ligon checks this website again, my email is listed. His grandparents Santo and Loretta lived next door to my grandparents Antonio and Concetta in Camp 42, Kansas and my dad knew his mom and his aunts. They were both families with the last name Torchia, but were not related. Suffice it to say the family history involves bootlegging and Torchias marrying Torchias.... but maybe you already know that. | Comments: | A BIG hello to ALL the Torchia's. Here I thought that my brother, me & a few of my cousins were the last of the Torchia line. Although there are different lines of Torchia's I'm sure that somewhere down the line we are all related in some way. My dad was Amerigo Torchia, his father was Bruno Torchia who travelled to and from Italy (Pittarella/Pedevigliano, Prov. Cosenza)to New York on a regular basis. Growing up we were told that he worked for the government but about 15 years ago I foud out that he was part or lead the Freemasons. In 1921 Nonno died while traveling to the US and was given a burial at sea. He left in the US his Daughter Alvira (who at the time was expecting her first child) and her husband Vincenzo. When Alvira found out about the death of her father she went into premature labour and died while giving birth to a little girl called Maria. Maria grew up and the last that I heard she married twice and both husbands died as a result of car accidents. Maria herself died a few years back in a car accident as well. He left Italy, with a cousin (last name Demarco) to avoid the Italian army (WWI) and came to American in the early 1910's. He went from New York to Pennsylvania and then on to Detroit, Michigan. He married a Dorthia Gust. He got rid of almost all documentation before he died in 1986. The family knows very little as he would not talk about his past. |

I am a Torchia as well, from, however, Cosenza, and the family branch is a bit different. however, I would like to inform you that while torchio is a press 9in particular for wine), Italians are very particular about feminine and masculine endings as they mean very different things. Our family, which is known for carrying a blue-eyed gene, originates in Egypt where it is spelled Torkia (obviously when they immigrated to Italy it was changed to ch since there is no K in the Italian Alphabet). It originally meant people who were from Torkia or Turkey. While your family branch is different from mine, I do not doubt that the origin of the name is the same. I hope this is of help to you. If, by any chance you would like any translations of Italian documents, I would be happy to help you however, as I went to University in Italy and often teach at the Politechnico in Milan. |

My great grandfather moved to the US in the 20's or so. One of his son's name was Ralph Torchia he died in 1960 a month after I was born. So, I was named after him, and was told he was a great man by my other grandfather who's name is Durante from northern Italy near abrutsia. I here different stories that my great grandfather moved to NJ or PA where the brothers his sons split up. Rumor is that a Ralph Torchia in PA who is a Doctor and is or was chief of staff maybe my Uncle. My grandmother was from sarsale I'm very much proud to be a Torchia! But we were moving all over the US as my dad John Ramo Torchia was not one to stay in touch with our family so everyone who could really help me has passed, and we were transferred all over the country and world. My father is presently assigned and working in China for Kodak even fter he retired he's been there going on 7 years or more. | Comments: | Hi All - My grandfather's name was Joseph John Torchia married to Leanne Inez Long. Most of our family is in the LaSalle/Peru, IL and Rockford, IL areas. Grandpa's brothers and sisters were Rosalie (Aunt Rowe), Henry (Uncle Hank), Josephine (Aunt Jay), Angela (Aunt Ange), and Uncle Nino - please forgive me if I missed someone. The parents were Rose Polizzi and Salvatore Torchia. Grandpa dies this May, so only aunt Rowe aunt Jay and uncle Peter are left. What an uproar there was when my grandpa wanted to marry someone who was not only not Italian, but also not a Catholic - Leanne was raised Baptist! Joseph and Leanne had five children - Linda, Terri, Joseph, William, and Lisa, 9 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren - with at least one more on the way. Leanne and Papa Joe owned and operated a gas station in the LaSalle Peru, IL area and then sold it to move to Henry, IL and open a restaurant and marina. They kept the restaurant for about 20 years and it was truly family owned and operated - I started working there when I was 5. Though grandma still owns the hotel, the marina was sold about 10 years ago. |

| Comments: | I am from Buffalo, New York. In Buffalo, we have a small group of Torchia's that settled here in 1904 when Joseph Torchia left Calarbia, Italy. One year later his wife Josephine Mazza Torchia and their son Bizellio joined him in Clarence, New York where they owned a small general store outside a mining quarry.
My father Leonard Torchia retired from the US Post Office and currently lives in Tonawanda, New York. Many of his siblings dispersed across the country, including Texas, California, Florida, and New Jersey. As of November 2005 Leonard had 3 sons and 2 daughters, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren with his wife Mary Pera Torchia. Currently they are in their eighty something years. |

My knowledge of the Italian language is very limited and therefore could not understand his entry. I know my fathers side of the family, the "Spadafora's" all come from Sicily and I am told that there is actually a town in Sicily named Spadafora. | Comments: | I know some scant evidence of a Frank and Robert Torchia who eventually settled down in Savannah GA after their mother remarried to John Tarantino. It seems that both Frank and Robert (Robert was also known as Rocco)eventually adopted the Tarantino name, as it is on Frank's death certificate. Robert and Frank's biological father was Antonio Torchia. Their mother was Rachela Vetrano, and they all hailed from New York City before all but Antonio end up in Savannah GA later. Frank was born in 1904 and died in Savannah in 1980. If you have any information on this branch of the Torchia family or know of any leads, it would be greatly appreaciated.
