| Comments: | Hi to all you beautiful Torchia people. I have just come back from Calabria on a mission to find the family of my mother (Emma Torchia - passed away in 1998). She was born in Platania near Lamezia Terme before she emigrated to Australia in 1955. She left a son (Giovanni Gabriele) behind who is my half brother. She also had 8 brothers and sisters. I went to Platania with my brother. We found my half brother that my mum left in Italy and also found 1 of her brothers and 1 of her sisters who are still living in Platania. We also found numerous cousins that still live there. The locals were so helpful in helping us locate some of our family. Our lives have been changed forever. I will be returning soon to spend more time with them. They are all amazing! I asked for assistance on this site before I left but no one could help so if you are interested in finding people, I suggest you go to Calabria. You will not be disappointed! |

| Comments: | my family comes from the province of Cozenza. However, you are correct is stating that many of the Torchias are from Calabria. My guess is that Torchia means coming from Turkey ( and via Egypt) or it is Albanian and changed (ie from Toska to Torchia). |

She had 3 girls & 1 boy from her first marriage,"Antohny Oliverio,"then had 3 boys Frncesco,Carlo, & alberto. We were all one happy family. My father govianni Gigliotti served in the United states Army in WW-1, His step-son spent 30 years in the navy , his son Fransico was a col. in the Army & his son Carlo was 3 years in ww-2 navy ,& me 4 years in the Army,"KOREA." She married Giovanni Giddio in Milazzo Sicily and migrated to Alexandria in Egypt in the early part of last century, they had about 11 or 12 children which were mostly born around the 1920's. | Comments: | My Grandmother Rosa Torchia was born in Soveria Manelli, a town in Catanzaro, Calabria. She married a Costanzo from that same town and they moved to the US around 1910. She had a brother Joe. This is a link to a list of current surnames in that small (3,000 plus inhabitants) town. There are about 2 to 3 people with Torchia surnames living there now.

Also, a history teacher from Albania said that the Torchia family comes from Albania (during that mass migration allowed by the King Naples in the late 14th century) and was probably spelled Toska... has anyone heard this? As I told him about my family he pointed out the Albanian traditions. I had already heard that either the Torchia's and/or Lupo's were from Albania, as was most of Calabria. He said "Calabria" was what they said when Italians from the north asked where they were from ... in Albanian ... Ca (from)Albana.. or something like that. This was my original post:
Hi! I just found my great, great great grandpa - Vincenzo Torchia born about 1837 in Calabria (possibly San Demetrio Corone). He married Tomassina Chimento (who came to US in the 1890's with their son Demetrio Torchia, who did not have children) and later their daughter Carmela Torchia (married to Don Filippo Lupo from Acri). I don't have Vincenzo's parents' names but wanted to log this in ... I hope we can all figure out how we're related. |

| Comments: | Which Spina line are you researching? I am the granddaughter of Costantino Spina, son of Salvatore Spina & Rosina Rossi. I know he had at least one brother and one sister that came to America from Pietrafitta, Cosenza, Calabria. He also had relatives in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. His parents did not come to America and several of his children were born in Calabria and one was born in Pennsylvania. The names of his children (all deceased except for Mary) are Rosa, Frank, Salvatore, Elaine, Mary, Anthony (well known for his photograpy - Chief Photographer of the Detroit Free Press for more than 40 years) Arthur, Theresa and Virginia. | Comments: | Hello Torchia "family"!! My Dad, Paul Joseph Torchia, is not my biological dad, but as far as I'm concerned, he's the best! His parents are Marie (LaDuca) Torchia and Peter W. Torchia, and we all live in/near Buffalo, NY. My Dad has 2 siblings - Kathie and Joanne, Kathie was adopted, then came Joanne, and finally my dad. I also know my grandpa Pete was in the Army during WWII, and that he actually saw action in France/Italy, though I can't seem to find any info on that. He has told us a little, but I'd love to get my hands on actual documents...

My grandfather Saverio Mirarchi left Sersale, Italy via Naples Jun 10,1900 or 1901 on the Scotia. When he arrived in New York (Ellis Island) immigrations americanized his last name to Mirarck. Savervio (Samuel) eventually made his way to Cleveland OH. Saverio's 1 sister Caterina Veol(?) Citriniti Mirarchi remained in Sersale, Lido, Catanzaro Italy. Am contacting you because my daughter/I will be traveling to Italy and thought Lido may be a stop we could make and any insight you may have re Rome, Naples, Tuscany...though our time is limited to approx 8 days in Italy. I am trying to find more about Vincenzo Torchia (born around 1830-1840?). All of you can download a free genealogy program I use called Personal Ancestral File (PAF) from familysearch.org and I learn a lot from the Ellis Island site looking up surnames. The Torchia name must have been very special because my family kept that name for their children for 2 more generations. |

My grandfather's brother Vito Torchia lived in Sersale, Calabria, and has many decendents that are still living there. I was also born in Magisano, but moved to Rochester, New York when I was 11 (34 years ago). My great-grandfather (Francesco Torchia) actually lived in Pennsylvania for a while, but moved back to Magisano before my grandfather was born. I know there are some Torchia's in there area, but they pronounce their name differently (Tor-sha). We still use the Italian pronunciation (Tork-eeya). Would be great to find other relatives. |

His mother went back to italy when he was a baby and he never saw her again. Augustino opened a shoe-making shop in West Street Durban and lokked after Frank until his death from TB when Frank was about 10. Frank was then put in a children's home until he was 17, when he went into the army. When he came out, he trained as a brick layer and married Zelma Joseph and they had 3 children, Antonio Augustino, belinda, and myself. My dad died in 1982 at age 54. I and my family still live with my mother in the house in Hillary, Durban that my father built onto (designed and did most of the brick-laying himself). I am so interested to find out how many Torchias are scattered all over the world! |

My father's name was Francino Tomasso Torchia. he came to South Africa when he was a baby in the late 1920s with his father Augutino Torchia and his mother, who soon returned to italy, so he didn't remember her. His father set up a shoe shop in West Street Durban and cared for Frank until his death from TB when Frank was about 10. Becuase he had no relatives in Durban, he was put into a children's home and joined the army when he was 17. After coming out, he trained as a brick layer, and married Zelma Joseph. They had 3 children, Antonio Augustino, Belinda, and me, Enrico Salvatore Torchia. My father said that when his father came to SA he was quite wealthy, but that he gambled away the money. My mother says that early in their marriage, Frank was sent some money from the sale of their family home in Italy, after his mother died. Frank died in 1982 at the age of 54 of a heart attack, and Zelma still lives with me and my family (wife Shirley and 16 year old daughter Gina) in the house in Hillary, Durban, that they moved into in the 1970s and built extensions himself (I remember him laying bricks very fast and accurately, standing on one leg with his crutches (he'd had his leg amputated)). The photo of your grandfather looks very much like my father as a young man, and also like me. I will send you pictures of me and my family if you would be interested. By the way, I have been earning my living as a clown for the past 25 years. |

She has a brother (Vito) and sister (Vittoria; Vicky). My Grandfather's name is Vincenzo Torchia. He has one brother here in the states that I know of (Frank Torchia). He recently passed away; his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren reside in Florida.
I know my grandfather spent time in Argentina during this time, as I see quite a few Torchia's from Argentina here. We also have cousins in London, Ontario as I remember visiting them as a child. I see a couple of people here are from the Toronto/Montreal area. There may be a connection there somewhere. My grandfather and grandmother have since returned to Italy. My paternal grandmother was Anna Torchia from Catanzaro, Calabria. She married Antonio "Tony" Guzzo, also from Catanzaro. They had a lot of family in Pennsylvania, so they lived there for a while then settled in Woburn, MA. I believe my grandmother's family emigrated from Albania to Italy. I remember very well him and his wife Rosina. We got together all the times he came to Italy. My grandfather Vittorio Filomena(my mother's father) who was a loyer, visited him in US and spend almost 2 years in Berkley working for William, then he went back to Italy. When William came to Italy, we have been together in Verbicaro at Vittorio's place. After he died I lost all the contacts with his family. Few years ago I was in San Francisco for vacation and I went in Stuart Street hoping to meet somebody from his family. | Comments: | This is strange, I have googled the name Torchia several times and never saw this site. I was wondering if anyone had a way to confirm my Grandfathers birthplace. I am going to Italy next year and would like to see where he went so many times.
My Grandfathers name was Guglielmo(William)Torchia. He was born August 29,1889 in Verbicaro, Cosenza, Calabria(Although I have seen a few articles on him where he claimed to be "Sicilian born.") He came through Ellis Island and was said to have sailed on a ship out of Naples. He took a train across the country with a couple he met on the ship. He settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. Now things become a blur. He was in business with A. P. Giannini and handled foreign exchange at the SF Bank of Italy.(I know they were friends because he used to tell me stories about them together and when Giannini passed away in 1949 he left my grandfather 2000 shares of B of A and also TA stock) As Bank of Italy could not make business loans, they opened a bank across the street from the SF Branch. I recall he told me it was called the "Bank of Stockton" because it was on the corner of Columbus and Stockton Streets. However, there is nothing I can find tying the two except a magazine article he told me was about all the Italians he set up in business. Grandpa helped many Italians get to America, has a plaque dedicated to him for helping save the S. F. Opera, set up many Italians in business, used to bring gobs of money to Italy about three times a year, and was known by many in the Bay Area Italian community. He lived with his second wife Rosina in Berkeley(near U. C.). He imported cheese, wine and olive oil from Italy. My Dad's name was Frank and I had one Uncle-August. My Mom's name was Angelina Bellasano. By chance does anyone know anything more about him? Especially, can they confirm the Calabria birth site. Ciao e Grazie |

| Comments: | Hello.... It has been really interesting reading all these Torchia posts. My grandparents, Antonio and Concetta Torchia came to the U.S. from Cosenza, Calabria around 1906. My grandmother Concetta's maiden name was Faselle. (sp.?) She was also from Cosenza. They eventually settled in Camp 42 (coal mining camp) in Columbus, Kansas and raised seven children, one of which was my dad. I decided to post something here because I saw a post listed on February 5, 2006 by "Don Ligon, Sr., E-mail address Ligon50@Hotmail.com". I tried to email Don Ligon but the hotmail email address was no longer active. If Mr. Ligon checks this website again, my email is listed. His grandparents Santo and Loretta lived next door to my grandparents Antonio and Concetta in Camp 42, Kansas and my dad knew his mom and his aunts. They were both families with the last name Torchia, but were not related. Suffice it to say the family history involves bootlegging and Torchias marrying Torchias.... but maybe you already know that. I am 33 years old, and he met my mother, Victoria, at a men's suit shop in Missouri in 1971. He went to the University of Ohio and law school in PA possibly? His parents lived near Miami Beach, FL. | Comments: | A BIG hello to ALL the Torchia's. Here I thought that my brother, me & a few of my cousins were the last of the Torchia line. Although there are different lines of Torchia's I'm sure that somewhere down the line we are all related in some way. My dad was Amerigo Torchia, his father was Bruno Torchia who travelled to and from Italy (Pittarella/Pedevigliano, Prov. Cosenza)to New York on a regular basis. Growing up we were told that he worked for the government but about 15 years ago I foud out that he was part or lead the Freemasons. In 1921 Nonno died while traveling to the US and was given a burial at sea. He left in the US his Daughter Alvira (who at the time was expecting her first child) and her husband Vincenzo. When Alvira found out about the death of her father she went into premature labour and died while giving birth to a little girl called Maria. Maria grew up and the last that I heard she married twice and both husbands died as a result of car accidents. Maria herself died a few years back in a car accident as well. My uncles cousins and Aunts are still there and the place where I was must of my infant life until I was 6 yrs Old still standing and next to the road to the town. My mom called “La massaria”, here we had cows and other farm animals. I was there in June and I took my wife there, we loved it and had a great time. May be my family knows yours!!! | Comments: | My grandfather was Nicola Torchia from Cariati. He came to the states in Nov. 1921. His father was francesco Torchia, mother Filomena Formaro. Francesco was already in the US. My grandfatehr came over with his mom, his brother Cataldo and his sister Mariangela. They changed his name to Torchy and he went by "Ted" which was his middle name. My dad is Frank, and he grew up in Scotch Plains NJ and later Mountainside, NJ. My grandfather, owned Torchy's Diner in Union for many years. | Comments: | I am the grandughter of a Tomaso Torchia. He was born in Italy (1894), We do not know where. He left Italy, with a cousin (last name Demarco) to avoid the Italian army (WWI) and came to American in the early 1910's. He went from New York to Pennsylvania and then on to Detroit, Michigan. He married a Dorthia Gust. He got rid of almost all documentation before he died in 1986. The family knows very little as he would not talk about his past. |

I am a Torchia as well, from, however, Cosenza, and the family branch is a bit different. however, I would like to inform you that while torchio is a press 9in particular for wine), Italians are very particular about feminine and masculine endings as they mean very different things. Our family, which is known for carrying a blue-eyed gene, originates in Egypt where it is spelled Torkia (obviously when they immigrated to Italy it was changed to ch since there is no K in the Italian Alphabet). It originally meant people who were from Torkia or Turkey. While your family branch is different from mine, I do not doubt that the origin of the name is the same. I hope this is of help to you. If, by any chance you would like any translations of Italian documents, I would be happy to help you however, as I went to University in Italy and often teach at the Politechnico in Milan. |
