I am a keeper of Lake Victoria cichlids and I look in whole Europe to find aquarists with the same interests. I saw your list of Victoria cichlids and I stopped at the picture of Mbipia lutea. In my opinion it should be Haplochromis "Thick Skin" from Kismu/Kenia. Mbipia lutea has a length of about 20 - 25 cm. And the Luteas have more stripes on their sides. Have you got them from an university or from a fisch shop? I am interested in all questions relating in Victorians. I myself keep 28 species of them. Sincerely Axel |

| Comments: | Great, Malawi Cichlids are the greatest fish I ever keep. I am new to the fish keeping hobby and failed for several attempts to keep Goldfishes, Danios, Tetras and South East Asian tank. My fishes get sick easily even though I give them the upmost care that I can afford. They get sick and some of them die (In case of Goldfish and Tetra , the whole tank tragedy). And I was almost want to give up the hobby until I finally found Malawi Cichlids.
Its pretty, hardy and easy to keep (Some may not agree with me, but its easier to provide rock cages, Keep water hardness and PH high rather than worry about the chores and painstaking process of planting for other tanks). Only 2 downside of keeping Cichlid: They attack human whenever I put my hand in the tank, although i feed them twice a day and they constantly fight (2 Yellow Lemon Laps have been killed)and i affraid to lose them anymore because i love them so much.Do you have any advise to solve these two problems? Currently I keep: 1 Snow White Cichlids (I don't what the spesis is, do you have any idea?) 7 Pseudotropheus zebra 4 Melanochromis auratus 1 Melanochromis johannii 1 Labidochromis caeruleus Happy fish keeping, good luck |

| Comments: | i hate to pick apart your website as i appreciate what you are trying to do, however i noticed a major error in the information you present to the public on your website in regards to Tropheus species. The information page states that you should feed them only shrimpmix which has an exceptionally high fat content. In the wild these fish, according to all available literature including work by Pierre Bricard, graze on algae and diatoms from the numerous soft rocks that litter the shores of lake Tanganyika. While grazing it is thought these fish are ingest some of the rock and grains of sand as a digestive aid, similar to birds ingesting cutllefish shell, however this remains a theory. My main concern with the information is that feeding Tropheus sp. a diet high in animal fat can lead to severe health problems including liver degradation, flagellate infection or they may even succumb to tuberculosis. These are most likely to end in death as treatments are hard to prescribe for a diagnosis that is more often than not wrong. Such severe cases can be easily avoided in the aquarium by primarily feeding vegatbales and alagal matter, feeding anything that as animal fat in it sparingly and maintaining the aquarium at a high standard i.e. exceptionally clean water and a high pH.
Sorry to sound pedantic however i keep aquariums, i have done so for 9 years now, and when i was just beginning false information such as this led to major catastrophies in my tanks, i would like to see others avoid making mistakes that should not be made and could be overcome if others in the industry/ affiliated media were more forthcoming with information. kind regards Quentin. ps. sorry if i sound pretentious, didactic, pedantic or any other adjective you wish to call me but i felt in necessary to criticise. |
