I met Susie (I won't tell her that is also your dog's name) when I moved from Northern California in 1976 to attend my senior year at Mary Star of the Sea. | Comments: | I was looking through an old copy of American Art Review and noticed your painting of Mexican Fishing Boat on the Beach. I thought it was particularly well painted and looking more closely I noticed the touches of red in an otherwise pastel palette. It reminded me of something I had read about Winslow Homer which mentioned a touch of red enhancing a painting. I live in Wilmington, NC but expect to travel to San Diego to visit family soon and will try to see your work while I'm there. I'm a newcomer here and a painter and the falling down tobacco barns are very interesting, have taken some photographs and tried to catch the essence of the barns in gouache as many have very reflective metal sides which require numerous and varied whites.The barns in the east are of many varieties depending upon their uses and localities, you might find them interesting subjects. Tobacco is on it's way out and the harvesting of it leaves a tall stalk with several leaves left at the top. Your landscapes are just lovely. I also have a hand written letter you wrote to Mario Simic answering my questions about the rigging on the ship where you mentioned using "Flying Cloud" as the model for the painting. The painting sits proudly above our fireplace with your "quote" from the last paragraph of the letter, which is eloquent and apropos, engraved in brass sitting below on the mantle. What a wonderful day we had, visiting the exhibition, seeing you and Rick, and purchasing works from both of you. "Passing Storm Clouds" is one of the most beautiful paintings we have seen and we will hang it with love and pride. On the way home, Laura and I discussed how good we feel about what we did, and she suggested that we consider your painting as a mutual wedding present to each other. That's what it is to us, a symbol of where we are now, in our lives, together, in love. Passing Storm Clouds, pretty much says where we are in our lives. Laura's husband, Ron, died of brain cancer two and a half years ago, and I have been divorced for ten years. So to us, our new life together is indeed characterized by passing storm clouds.
