I wrote this just before finding your page, while searching for ways to rid my life of junk (freebies to costly). I like it and think it would be a good comment: ************* Space, with all the new visions from astronomy even from beyond the earth, is becoming tangible. Topologically, space is different than anything ever guessed in all the history of the world. We have images of space myriads of galaxies of trillions of stars, distances incomprehensible in which time and distance both become at once infinitesimals. We have determined, measured, calculated and computed the properties and characteristics, attributes and existence of space with, if not infinite precision, then ten decimal places in fifty different fundamental constants. And we have discovered that a cubic foot or cubic meter of the space in your room, is exactly the same as the space between the planets, between stars and galaxies. So far as we know, the space in your house is identical to an equivalent volume of space on the far side of the Milky Way, out toward Dwingeloo. We're not in Australia any more. There are minor differences, such as that the space in your house is very slightly modified by the weighty masses of the Earth and Moon and Sun. But this modification is exactly the same kind of thing that takes place on any world, anywhere. Space is not only becoming better understood. It is being understood more clearly, and accurately, and because of that, it is becoming more valuable. Not because there is so much of it, although that is a part of it. Space is like water, which is abundant: we need it every day and if we do not have it, we die. On the surface of the earth, we do not have as much space as there is in all the universe. We have a little of it, and sometimes we fight with the neighbors for more of space. If we do not have enough space, we might die. Just as a man cannot drink an entire lake, however, we do not need vast amounts of space, in our houses, or at any one time. We do not need to be selfish or greedy with either water or space, but we do need to be content with an amount of it which is sufficient for our needs, health, even pleasure. Even pleasure does not require an infinite amount of water. To be content with a small amount of something every day, we must have reliable supplies of it. But space is not only precious to human beings; it is precious to all living organisms, whether they live in water or on land. It is so precious, in fact, that at the extreme, space is becoming savagely important, vital, and desperately necessary, desperately important. Someplace in your house, space must be treasured. Perhaps in a small place, perhaps large. It is very important in the eventual outcome to have a special place; it must be a place in which light color, and distance and area and volume, mass weight, and time can all have meaning. If you have such a space, you can look at it, ignore, it, study it, meditate on it, be reminded of something by it, contemplate it -- and most of all, you can understand that all the space in your house is that precious. When you reach the understanding, that space actually exists, then you can use that precious space to push junk out of your house. By doing this, you can become the aggressor in renunication of material things, and you can find and rejoin the species of living organisms, into which you were born. Through the indiscriminate imposition of the secular union, we become as members of a species incapable of acting on our perceptions-as-species. As a result we do not reject things which are offensive early enough; and we become, as species, inured to junk, clutter, objects, things, stuff, trivia, garbage, inconsequentials and so on. They surround us, and we become attached to things as species (though as very low order species) instead of to space in which species (of the living, conscious kind) can exist. **************** I will add the idea of space and aroma together and see what comes of it.
