Hey g, your most recent (at the time) mizar6 post inspired me to blog a minor cross-pond coincidence. Ah, the aging Steely Dan fan base, eh?...
Just putting the pic here for laughs and/or jeers. My usual excess of pointless details on the blog if anyone cares. I don't know about facebook. Never looked into it much. Did MySpace just to see what all the fuss was about at the time, but don't do much with it anymore beyond the occasional perhaps once a week check to see what might be goin' on with it. Seems to me the two sites oughtta merge and become FaceSpace. It'd just be a catchier, more memorable name. Oh well, it'll be a project for another day if I ever decide to give fb a go.

Oh well, humor is a very subjective thing. Apparently the comment on mouseover may not work with all browsers. xkcd comics always have that feature though and sometimes it's even a large part of the humor. Whether it is in this case or not, I can't tell so I'll just give it to you here now...
"But if you unplug everything, it gets so quiet you hear that high-pitched empty-room hum. And then the whispers begin." The humor of the comic itself is of course that someone on the other end of an IM conversation (or something similar) says s/he's going to spend a weekend at home without the internet and within the hour is on there already saying that the experience is not so bad after all before realizing, "Ooops, I'm on the internet!" Maybe it's not really all that funny, but it struck me as such at the time especially with the commented tagline as above. On the "about" page for the comic, there's this particular Q&A: Why can't I read the whole comic mouseover text in Firefox? They can be read with extensions like Long Titles, or by right-clicking on the images and going to 'properties', then clicking and dragging to read the whole thing. This is a bug in Firefox, Mozilla Bug #45375. It has been outstanding for many years now. Note: It looks like it's been fixed in Firefox 3.0.

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE FILM "WATCHMEN"
Janet Black: Doctor Manhattan as you know the Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clock face analogizing humankind's proximity to extinction, midnight representing the threat of nuclear war. As of now it stands at four minutes to midnight. Would you agree that we are that close to annihilation? Jon Osterman: My father was a watch maker. He abandoned it when Einstein discovered time is relative. I would only agree that a symbolic clock is as nourishing to the intellect as is a photograph of oxygen to a drowning man. Adrian Veidt: It doesn't take a genius to see the world has problems. Edward Blake: No, but it takes a room full of morons to think they're small enough for you to handle. Dan Dreiberg: What happened to us? What happened to the American Dream? Edward Blake: "What happened to the American Dream?" It came true! You're lookin' at it. Rohrschach: Never compromise. Not even in the face of Armageddon. That's always been the difference between us, Dan. Rorschach: You see, Doctor, God didn't kill that little girl. Fate didn't butcher her and destiny didn't feed her to those dogs. If God saw what any of us did that night he didn't seem to mind. From then on I knew. God doesn't make the world this way. We do. Rorschach: None of you understand. I'm not locked up in here with you. You're locked up in here with me. Jon Osterman: I have walked on the surface of the Sun, witnessed events so tiny and so fast, that they can hardly be said to have occurred at all. But you, Adrian, you're just a man. The world's smartest man poses no more threat to me than does its smartest termite. Jon Osterman: I'm disappointed in you, Adrian! Very disappointed! Re-assembling myself was the first trick I learned as Dr Manhattan! Jon Osterman: A living body and a dead body have the same number of particles. Structurally there's no difference. Edward Blake: Once you realize what a joke everything is, being the Comedian is the only thing that makes sense.

Just so as you know, I'm not saying anybody's wrong or right, I just find the general concept fascinating on some level no matter who's ultimately right. I've never had a pet so I can't really have an opinion myself or at least not one which I could consider authoritatively based on any actual personal knowledge or observation.

| WHAT A SHADE ABOUT | aNother bird story | |
|
Magpies (which are in the same bird family as crows and ravens) have been repeatedly observed holding "wakes" when a member of their flock is killed. As many as 20 or 30 individuals gather around the body and vocalize for a considerable length of time. I myself once saw a touching sight -- driving through the Eastern Sierra in California, I saw an 18-wheeler parked at the side of the road. The driver was standing there, looking down at the body of a crow he had somehow run into, or that had run into his truck. Beside it, another crow, no doubt its mate, was squawking so loudly I could hear it through closed windows, and moving back and forth with considerable agitation. Who says humans are the only animals that grieve?

cool! Well deserved...
Gabriel shares Polar Music Prize about pets... for sure they grieve. Funny this comes up because a friend of mine just saw a crow get hit by a car, and the two crows it was with were going nuts about their friend who was in bad shape. Their reaction affected her more than the plight of the hurt crow. I know they're not pets but still... And I just read a touching story about how a young child was killed in a terrible accident. This was long ago when they would display the body at home for a few days for people to come and pay their respects. Afterwards, the family dog laid for 3 days in the spot where the coffin had been, without eating or drinking, until it passed away too. And I've personally seen pets effected by loss of owners and pet friends. Hard to think of this as news, really... if animals are capable of so much joy (i.e. a dog playing), it seems natural their emotional range would extend just as far in the other direction. Wait until they find out plants mourn too... lol! :-) But to balance this post out emotionally :-) animals and plants

I know my Amazon parrot suffers from severe separation anxiety and can even anticipate the possibility that I might be leaving. For instance, if she sees me putting away clothing in the bedroom where her cage is, she gets agitated; I think her previous owner went away on lots of business trips, so when she sees me folding clothes she assumes I'm packing to leave. She understands the meaning of the action and starts being worried about it. So why couldn't she grieve if a member of our "flock" were to pass away?

oooh, not much time now but can not resist. yes i am more than positive that pets can feel loss as well. if their owner goes shopping or if a child moves out... if a companion dies... our grrls sulk if one of us has to go out. at first they cried as if someone was hurting them, Sascha did this... and then they just lay still, with sad eyes... and then very much alive and happy again if they hear the car or the key in the door...
and it don't matter 'this doesn't relate to anything'. it doesn't have to. as long as we know you have a mind that is in fine working order .... :-)

| WHAT A SHADE ABOUT | Do petS grieve? | |
|
I just found this article interesting...
Do pets grieve? It's easy (and often fun) to anthropomorphize pets, but we just can't know. Maybe it's even a little bit of each of the potential explanations given. I think it's almost as hard to understand and relate to people (despite language). We're each of us trapped in our own brains/bodies. Two of us may suffer the same malady, but does one feel it worse than the other? Both sprain an ankle, but one complains more about the pain... Which one is suffering more? The one grimacing the most or speaking of it the most? Maybe. But not necessarily. When someone gives orders and asks the underling if he understands, the underling says yes. Now, did he truly understand? He may have just thought he understood. Understand...? Not really relevant to anything, I know, but just the sort of thing(s) I sometimes wonder about.

Why?
Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are almost dead? Why do banks charge a fee on 'insufficient funds' when they already know there is not enough money? Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars; but have to check when you say the paint is still wet? Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard? Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a revolver at him? Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets? Whose idea was it to put an 'S' in the word 'lisp'? If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes? Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use the bubbles are always white? Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale? Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized? Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance? Why is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on your first try? How do those dead bugs get into those enclosed light fixtures? When we are in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle with a shopping cart then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, 'It's all right'? Well, it isn't all right, so why don't we say, 'That really hurt. Why don't you watch where you're going?' Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over? In winter why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat? How come you never hear father-in-law jokes? The statistics on sanity is that one out of every four persons is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Think of your three best friends -- if they're okay, then it's you.

The Washington Post asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here are the winners:
1. Cashtration (n): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time. 2. Ignoranus: A person who's both stupid and an asshole. 3. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with. 4. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly. 5. Bozone (n): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future. 6. Foreploy: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid. 7. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high 8. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it. 9. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late. 10. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.) 11. Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer. 12. Decafalon (n): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you. 13. Glibido: All talk and no action. 14. Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly. 15. Arachnoleptic Fit (n): The frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider web. 16. Beelzebug (n): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out. 17. Caterpallor (n): The colour you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating. The Washington Post also published the winning submissions to its yearly contest, in which readers are asked to supply alternate meanings for common words. And the winners are: 1. coffee (n): the person upon whom one coughs. 2. flabbergasted (adj): appalled by discovering how much weight one has gained. 3. abdicate (v): to give up all hope of ever having a flat stomach. 4. esplanade (v): to attempt an explanation while drunk. 5. willy-nilly (adj): impotent. 6. negligent (adj): absentmindedly answering the door when wearing only a nightgown. 7. lymph (v): to walk with a lisp. 8. gargoyle (n): olive-flavored mouthwash. 9. flatulence (n): emergency vehicle that picks up someone who has been run over by a steamroller. 10. balderdash (n): a rapidly receding hairline. 11. testicle (n): humorous question on an exam. 12. rectitude (n): the formal, dignified bearing adopted by proctologists. 13. pokemon (n): a Rastafarian proctologist. 14. oyster (n) a person who sprinkles his conversation with Yiddishisms. 15. frisbeetarianism (n): the belief that, after death, the soul flies up onto the roof and gets stuck there. 16. circumvent (n): an opening in the front of boxer shorts worn by Jewish men.

Arcelor-Mittal Steel Works, Inc. feeling it's time for a Shakeup, hires a new CEO. The new boss is determined to rid the company of every slacker.
On a tour of the facilities, the CEO sees a guy leaning on a wall. The room is full of workers and he wants to let them know that he means business. He walks up to the guy leaning against the wall and asks, "How much money do you make a week? A little surprised, the young man replies, "About $400 a week. Why?" The CEO then hands the guy $1,600 in cash and screams, "Here's four weeks' pay, now GET OUT and don't come back." Feeling pretty good about himself, the CEO looks around the room and asks, "Who can tell me what that goof-ball did here?" From across the room comes a voice, "Pizza delivery Guy from Domino's."

"mexico city, like another world, nice this year they say, i'll be your senorita, with jeans an pearls, but first lets' get off this high way, off this highway."

"Brooklyn" was on CBAT. So maybe you'd like to hear Countdown To A Thrill? Can't Buy Ecstasy? It's OK, we're all getting older. The memory is usually the second thing to go. Now if I could only remember what the first thing was... ;-) G, those items you mention should still be there. I will try to send you the appropriate links when I can. Thanks.

Personally, I'd like to hear the CTE album in its entirety, mostly because it'd be great to hear "Brooklyn" with Donald singing instead of that obnoxious Palmer character :). Also, I'm sure the boys would rework "Pearl of the Quarter" with a jazzy sax arrangement instead of Skunk's pedal steel. Not to mention "King of the World."
Second choice: "Katy Lied" with all the outtakes. :)

geocities. hm. thanks DS, i still host images there, thanks for letting me know... have to move 'em then.. was also wondering about your Rumpus & Fagen shots, because i wanted to put them in the new Mizar6 Rumpus album... if they're still up there in geometrics, can you drop me the link so i can copy/paste them into safe waters? time to run, have to finish work and then some. and then some more. I hope that when Obama and Clinton meet 'our' Dutch minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen (who also happens to come from my old hometown Maastricht), there will be someone to urge a less than cowardice attitude towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict the Dutch government is clearly taking. It is very sad that former and retired politicians, diplomats and ambassadors like Dries van Agt and Jan Wijenberg decided to become political activists on behalf of the Palestinian people in their senior years, and that so many people write them off as being senile or anti-semitic.
Just look at these happy faces, because the Gaza Music School has reopened...!!

G et al...
Was surprised to see the above new item on Snopes just now. Yahoo! is shutting down their free Geocities web hosting service as of later this year (and not accepting new signups as of right now). Go here for more details. Of course, I just recently uploaded some personal comics "cheat" htm files that vastly help me out reading some selected strips online by skipping visiting each one's sloooow loooooading web page individually in turn and displaying the strips directly instead. I don't care (much) about losing other stuff I have there, but I'd like to be able to find another free alternative for my little comics files. Naturally, they're recommending that folks just "upgrade" to a $5/mo hosting service. I like my comics stuff, but they're not really worth $5 a month. Anyway, G, I know you have used geocities in the past (if not still) since you were the one who got me started using it way back when, so I thought you might want to know if you hadn't heard. It's always something. Sigh.

my sense is that obama's work to restore positive international relations is a HUGE step forward. for all the talk we've heard over the past 8 years or so about the "global economy", the u.s. certainly wasn't acting as it that were so, given their propensity to use military force to get their way. obama is addressing those contradictions in terms and in many of those being made uncomfortable are in fact the bible thumpers and gun toters (read primarily single-minded white folk there, ok?).

Obama? Mended ties that were long broken with the latins, Cuba, Guatemala, etc. some arabs and working on others, Russia, crucial... And that's in the last two weeks. At the International level, results speak for themselves and change is indeed effective, at least at that level.
I feared bigotry as well but then it'sd not McCain that's President now and it must mean it shows its limits as a pertinent worldview out there. The unhappy people tend to keep to themselves and their bibles and their guns. I'd say 35 per cent of americans are closet racists, and the rest just happen to know they are somehow of mixed origins and/or have close ties in real-time with all types. lol

hey there b... on the nicotine again eh? sometimes i wonder if a smoke would make a difference, as in smoke on occasion... we discussed it the other day... but every FIRST cigarette after a long haul (eh...) of non-nicotine makes ya feel nausea and sick, you feel the stuff setttle in the veigns as if every window is blinded, as if every worker in your inner factory is suddenly off for lunch or a .. smoke lol
nah. can't start again, not this time no more. and yes dr wu, the american lifestyle, the north american lifestyle... i grew up looking up to anything US-sy, they had better music, better movies, better anything, more space, more land, more freedom.... a fine language i could relate to better than to my own... but the downside came when i discovered the internet, kind of... in these last couple of years, the imago of the US, or the realities i learned about the country... generally spoken... not so good. the weapon stuff. very wrong. the ghetto thing. wrong as well. death row and mainly black man in orange suits. extremely sad and wrong. ignorance. to be deplored. lack of willpower to change lifestyle and give up luxury or fast big bigger cars. very wrong. racism bigotry. verbs that shouldn't be. etcetera. but i blame it on the fact it is too big a country to BE exactly that. A country. it's a collection of states with their own laws and legislation and culture and people and mindsets and landscapes. how on earth can that be thrown together as ONE country? do you feel change now Obama is at the helm i wonder.. in every day life... is it different at airports, can men with long beards and arabic names simply pick up their luggage and greet their friends and family without anyone from customs or security on their tail, thinking they carry a bomb somewhere inside?

it's not that people can cut back their nasty polluting habits is much as WILL they cut back. the difference, at least in "america" (u.s. people use this term as if the u.s. were the only country in the americas, more arrogance, but i digress) is that our "culture/society" is spoiled rotten and just plain lazy. instant gratification and comfort rules. why should we struggle or change our lifestyle? that attitude is the driving force behing those that are cynical about global warming and its effects we're discussing ... if they look the other way and poohpooh the science they can easily pretend it's not happening and therefore, their lifestyle doesn't change ... mostly the atttude is "let everyone else around the world deal with it", we're above it." sad situation especially given that the u.s. is world polluter enemy #1, and if others around the world are contributing, it's largely the result of the u.s. shoving its lifestyle into their collective faces.

For some reason, not long ago I ended up watching this old Vermont community program called Across the Fence, something that has been playing all my life. It followed the Price is Right on the CBS affiliate like it has always been there. Anyway, it's alla bout nature and agriculture on the local scene there and that time there was a biologist/birdwatcher who kept saying: "we never saw thsoe species around here" or "species birds migrate further north these days". And that can't be a good sign for Earth, seeing how migratory patterns for animal species have somehow been impacted by climate already. It's the case of the bald eagle too and going down the food chain, it seems to be slowly disorienting the whole of nature. And then, it's just not funny anymore.
Good news is, no doubt a submersive pseudo nature in full stereoscopy and smellorama is coming right up to substitute it all as living environment. ugh I have stopped smoking only to start again after years off of it as well. That too is pretty sad. morning

dr Wu, i so fully agree we teach our children not so very well, the system and models of capitalism do not cease to function as top priority in education and here in Europe they're now trying to sell the idea of a 'big united Europe' that can pull the less fortunate (read greedy stupid evil) financial institutions out of their miserable positions, hanging over a cliff like toxic debris still shining radio-active bright so people suffer from diamond and gold feverish dreams... the water in the usa. the air here in belgium and the netherlands ain't that good either... in the olden days, washing my hair once a couple of days NEVER made me want to step out of the rinsing water. NOW, if i wash my hair every other day, it is DIRTY and BLACK, the rinsing water. imagine what junk and particles we can not see is floating about there freely, polluting and poisoning us as we walk and breathe... smoking may be bad for health, but it did stop the bacteria from settling once upon a time. now i am open to all kinds of viral attacks, enduring various minor complaints of respiratory nature that have proven themselves chronical and instant as soon as i quit smoking (twice with a period of 11 years non-smoking, then 3 years smoking and now 4 years non-smoking again). as far as all that is concerned, my views have to be far from optimistic. i don't think people can cut back on whatever it needs to change how we damage this planet and its natural resources, not just for ourselves but also other species and life... the Orang Utan diary, the apes in Borneo... forests are being destroyed just to plant palm oil trees because we need the product for various other products we use on a daily basis...

Happy Earth Day everyone! This should be a holiday everyone can agree on across international and species boundaries, right? I mean, who could have anything against Earth? It's where we live... it's got a great view, and rent is relatively cheap. Of course it should be when you have 6.77 billion noisy roommates.
And jeez... did we luck out or what? I mean, one planet to the left or right and we're toast. So have fun today. I'm going to low-key it this Earth Day because I still haven't recovered from Pluto "don't call us a dwarf" Day from six (Earth) months ago. They're definitely still trying to over-compensate for that whole downgrade fiasco, but it was a great party... my skin still hurts. Anyway... Happy Earth Day to plants, animals, microbes, and the undetermined/undecided everywhere. peace as always your tzg

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067588/ Carmel's KRML, the backdrop for Clint Eastwood’s “Play Misty For Me” flick, may be sold. KRML is closing down its “Jazz and Blues Company” retail store, for sure, and a station sale may follow. KRML’s located in the “historic Eastwood Building in downtown Carmel”, says the Monterey Herald. Owner David Kimball says sale negotiations are being finalized now. The Herald says KRML was listed last year at $1.8 million, along with its “Jazz and Blues Company” operation and a live-performance space. “Jazz by the Sea” KRML is at 1410 and has 500 watts daytime and 16 watts after sundown. As you’d imagine, it also streams its unique jazz and blues programming at KRMLRadio.com. If you haven’t seen the 1971 noir-ish “Play Misty For Me” – it’s about a whispery-voiced jazz DJ and an obsessed female fan. Eastwood himself is an aficionado of jazz and a pretty fair jazz pianist.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama intends to lift the U.S. ban on family members traveling to Cuba and remittances to the island, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
The move would fulfill a pledge Obama made during the presidential campaign and could signal a new openness with the communist nation, the newspaper said in an article posted on its Web site. Democrats in Congress are also moving to loosen restrictions on family travel to Cuba, but Obama plans to use presidential powers to ease the rules on his own, the Journal said, quoting an unidentified senior administration official. The president does not intend to call for lifting the decades-long trade embargo against Cuba, which would require congressional approval, the report said. Timing of the announcement is unclear, the Journal said, but there was speculation it could come before this month's Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago. During the presidential campaign, Obama pledged to allow unlimited family travel and remittances to Cuba. ``It's time to let Cuban-Americans see their mothers and fathers, their sisters and their brothers,'' he said in a speech last May in Miami. ``It's time to let Cuban-American money make their families less dependent on the Castro regime.'' The rules will affect an estimated 1.5 million Americans who have relatives in Cuba, the Journal said. Attempts to reach administration officials Friday night for comment on the report were unsuccessful.

i could not resist posting this. pretty creative and fresh, i'd say.
An article from the St. Petersburg Times Newspaper on Sunday. The Business Section asked readers for ideas on "How Would You Fix the Economy?" This reader nailed it! Dear Mr. President, How about Patriotic retirement: There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force today. Pay them $1 million apiece severance with three stipulations: 1) They leave their jobs. Forty million job openings. Unemployment fixed. 2) They buy NEW American cars. Forty million cars ordered. Auto Industry fixed. 3) They either buy a house or pay off their mortgage. Housing Crisis fixed. All national financial problems fixed relatively inexpensively!!!

howdy dimskipster :-)
it is safe to assume folks who frequent or even infrequent here are privy to the pleasurable tickles of listening to music, and in general that is. we probably all have enjoyed music that ain't necessarily listed as being cool or of high standard qualitarian eh quality :-) and a lot of singer-songwriter stuff might thrive under the wide array of what once started as a spark ignited by country music, right? have to run now, more later. and it's sad that financial relapses make hard copies disappear the way they do. and it is also probably safe to assume that the filthy rich won't have to blink twice because they have their assets secured. it's always the more vulnerable who are hurt in times like these... y'all have a dry rainless weekend, hopefully :-)

Not that most folks around here necessarily care much (if at all) about country music, but I thought I'd post this more as a general indicator of the state of the music-related biz and the economic realities of today. Of course, every situation is unique in many ways as well, but still...
I only recently (in the last 6 months or so) discovered the site and have it among my iGoogle feeds in case various items might be of interest. I didn't know there was a hard copy version though. I thought the quick recounting of the history of the magazine (and some of its competitors) was of some mild interest anyway. It is “UP” to you to decide if you are “UP” to reading this.
Lovers of the English language might enjoy this. It is yet another example of why people learning English have trouble with the language. Learning the nuances of English makes it a difficult language. (But then, that's probably true of many languages.) There is a two-letter word in English that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is 'UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as being used as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v]. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends and we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has a real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP ! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP . When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets UP the earth. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on & on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now ... .my time is UP , so time to shut UP! Oh ... one more thing: What is the first thing you do in the morning & the last thing you do at night? U P Don't mess UP. Send this on to everyone you look UP in your address book. Now I'll shut UP

I am proud to say that I've already lost my first friend on facebook. And to lose friends there, you really have to do it. It was a childhood friend of mine that I had found researching names form my past. That is touchy beause after twenty years or so, people have changed and there's this scary element to it. It's not always cool to be reminded of some things. The guy has turned zen budhist and gave up the rock and roll dream it would seem after what appeared to be some success on the local charts. It was really bizarre anyway. I don't think I'll try that again. lol

trying to figure out how to get last year's Mizar5 back in the running. i have all the files in FTP mode in a folder on the new server, i created a new database (i can run multiple blogs now, since i have a lot more space) for the old Mizar5, so it can run next to Mizar6. but i have been trying all kinds of, i somehow have to import the existing php files... but i don't know diddly about SQL or how to handle database stuff. i am skipping a few dimensions here because i just want to learn the technique and not really have to grasp it as such, so far i have created and deleted a couple of databases, got a strange old mizar5 with no content running now, but i know all the files are on the server, i just have to get them in the database. it is an interesting process, nonetheless. ugh.

Life is, uh, life. I'm OK though. Thanks for inquiring. Enjoyed the doggie pics btw. So glad you were there to rescue them, clean them up, and let them stay a little while to recover.
As far as I know, Barney's fine. Figure I'll wait till much later in the soon-to-spring Spring to pay him another visit. Though at this point I'm probably all photo'd out on him and I would just go to enjoy the day/evening personally. Just been in one of my "lurking but not seen" phases for a while now, perhaps longer than usual. Nothing much to blog about lately either. On the Fagen/Dan/fan/dying thing... 1. I take such comments and other internet postings for what they are and not necessarily the whole truth or even an unbiased version of the truth. 2. From what I've seen/read/heard of Fagen and Becker in mere interviews and how snarky (and yes, often enough seemingly arrogant) they can sometimes get if they're not in the mood (or don't seem to respect the interviewer), the event as summarily described would not really surprise me all that much, but that’s as far as I’ll go there. 3. Yes, if they cater to one special request, they run the risk of then becoming gradually more and more obligated to grant similar requests all too often (possibly even bogus ones, though that would be somewhat twisted imo). I've heard people call local sports radio shows and complain that some athlete didn't sign an autograph. But sometimes what the caller doesn't say is that they were bothering the athlete and his family in the middle of dinner. Or that the athlete had just signed 253 other autographs, had another appearance to get to somewhere and had to leave 56 other autograph seekers as graciously as possible, but disappointed. 4. The commenter did not say there was no response, but that "Their response was so arrogant and uncaring that I was appauled." Uncaring is one thing, but arrogant to me implies a certain level of indignity well above and beyond uncaring. It also tells me that (again, if factually reported) there likely was nothing planned for the concert had the person lived long enough. I don't know that the family would have bothered to inform the SD powers that the relative had died in the interim given the prior “arrogant” response of the SD camp, so if there had been anything planned for the concert to accommodate the "shout out" or a meet-and-greet, the family would have probably heard somehow. Although maybe not. Of course, that's all according to one anonymous internet commented and may or may not be a correct interpretation of the incident. Also, that person may or may not have all the facts. And I kind of doubt that "Their" indicates the true personal involvement of Becker or Fagen. Chances are good, I think, that they have a policy in place for representatives to handle such requests in a specified manner. 5. It doesn't affect my own view of Fagen and/or Becker one little bit. I already have some serious doubts as to them being people I'd like to, say, have dinner with. It certainly has no bearing whatsoever on their musical talent or my appreciation of their work.

have given it some thought in between all else, the not-reaching-out-to-fans thing of Steely Dan. have mixed thoughts about it, but also see where Tones is coming from. if word got out Fagen or Becker would be willing to grant a dying wish, maybe more fans would then approach them.. still, i doubt whether there would be hundreds of terminal patients among their fans and concert go-ers, even though the average age would be close to becoming terminal of natural causes soon lol.
generally, i don't think the management gives a ... and even if they can't grant a dying man's wish, they could have sent just a simple reply, no we can't do this etc etc... but staying silent, it seems rude, yes. but one should not expect anything... for being a fan... i know i had my own sobering experiences which led to the disintegration of "steely fanhood" :-) ..to continue respecting or admiring people for what they do, their work, there has to be an incentive they deserve this respect and admiration. i've had plenty incentives convincing me of the opposite. but it was nice when it was nice. and then life just goes on. Steve Lukather is an example of a musician who has tons of fans, but he always makes time to connect and talk to the folks who visit the concerts. the meet & greet thing... there is a difference in being a musician and the whole stardom entourage thing... and not every musician likes or knows how to relate or communicate with his audience... so we can't really hold that against someone. yes, the home made meals and such, dr Wu refers to... i can imagine it having been grand experiences :-) and it makes the music and musicians so much more sympathetic, nice and human. Music for Gaza. it's been a real eye-opener so far, loads of wonderful people helping those less fortunate than us in the wealthy rich Western world. i feel like writing a thousand stories about individuals who devote their lives and time to building good things. the sun is out here, still cold. You know, I doubt DF probably has any idea any of this happened at all. I don't think he's answering the office phone or opening the fan mail. The inquiry was more than likely fielded by someone at the office and forwarded to management, who made the decision to not to do it or maybe not to even bother DF with it. However, I agree there's no call to be rude, unless demands were being made instead of requests. Who knows how it really went down though? Regardless of who, if anybody, was rude, DF gets made to look like the asshole, and in this case I don't think that's fair.
When DF or WB strike me as exceptionally private people for world famous celebrities. They have never made any remarks from the stage concerning in their own immediate circle of friends and family. Not only would it be very out of character for them to mention someone they don't even know personally, it could have been misconstrued as exploiting someone's personal tragedy for dramatic effect. For these reasons, and the ones I stated earlier, I don't think it's reasonable to expect DF to mention that guy. Though I do understand how the people could have taken it personally in their emotional state.

seems to be that "back in the day" celebs were a bit warmer and approachable when asked to do such things, even to meet and chat with fans. i remember in the late 60's the mother of a friend, guy who played guitar in our band, would routinely check to see what bands or singers (all genres) were in town and would reach out to them and invite them over her home for a homecooked meal. living in miami there was a lot of touring hitting south florida, especially in the fall and winter months. her modus operandi was based on knowing that these people were road and road food weary and would appreciate the break from the grind. interestingly enough several showed up over the 2 year time period our band was together - steve lawrence of steve and edie, mike pinera of the blues image, ed cassidy and randy california of spirit, wilson pickett, joey dee of the starlighters, as examples). of course as young musicians in a garage band we were so excited to meet these folks ... wonderful experience.

That's sad... I understand the implication too, but can you imagine how many requests like that people as famous as DF get? And if it ever got out there would be nothing but endless requests, and they'd have to do entire tours where every song was dedicated to sick or deceased friends and family of fans... it could get out of hand...
also since the guy didn't live to go to the concert we'll never know if he would have gotten a shout out anyway. Some friends of mine wrote Sean Penn to ask him to stop by and see a friend of mine who had cancer at her store (he lives around here), and the bastard never did, but we didn't take it personally... Of course if we had, next thing you know it's on TMZ that Sean Penn hates cancer victims.

"My husband saw countless concerts of Steely Dan. He loved them. He would buy front row tickets no matter the cost when they would come to Miami, Ft Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Tampa or Manhattan. Last year he was diagnosed with Brain cancer at age 43, I contacted Donald Fagens office, told them we had front row tickets to their June concert in Miami, we explained that my husband Andy loved them , that he was dying and that if after the concert he could meet him or atleast call out his name during the concert, anything. Their response was so arrogant and uncaring that I was appauled. This was going to be a surprise for my husband we never told him about it. Anyways a week before the concert he died(RIP 6/2/07), and never got to go. I emailed their executive offices and let them know too.. How sad!!!!"

Hi Gina, and everybody else! Everybody, anybody, whoever... Gina, what I understand are you managing Carolyn Leonharts My Space-site. And I have on several occationa tried to be "friends" with her. You are not allowing me to be that, and my question to you is; does she know that you are discriminating her fans like this?
Though you obviously are managing her site for free, I can't see one good reason for keeping me out. What I am trying to say is; what if this shit was for real? Do you want money? //Clas PS// Angel, I must say you're the most profound chick on this earth.

I am around but beyond busy. Life su@ks sometimes.
Still getting the hang of Facebook, too B. Don't feel bad about it. I am now getting taught by my son, who is a real newbie. Ah, old age. It's good to see The Dan Touring again. Something to keep the Blue going.
