| Have fun i France! One of these days I'll get myself there as well...
And strong of you to leave the computer at home and enjoy the trip without it. Been there myself; with the technology available maybe I should just bring the computer, video camera ... or at least the small digital camera to take a few snaps. Leaving all that behind will probably help you enjoy the trip that much more. And speaking of 'Allo 'Allo ... one of the classic comedy hits on television here in Sweden. Still works albeit at at different level than when it was new. Your Benny Hill comedy connection works. Great stuff!

TERRArrrrrr (Pirate language) watched something on TV that made me think of Angel and ß. Does anyone know the British series 'Allo 'Allo? A bit corny and bordering Benny Hillish sexist humor, about a French resistance group aiding crashed pilots and guiding them back home, with the Gestapo in their face all the time. the documentary as linked to above, is a true story of pilot Bill Grosvenor. His son David made this documentary, their family travelled to Belgium and revisited events and places, stories and experiences were told and shared about the Cometline, the work of the Resistance to offer safehouses for allied pilots and bring them home. Bill also spent time in the Saint Gilles (lol) prison in Brussels, too bad a beautiful building like that is used for darker purposes.

| I am fine. Sorry, it was kind of depressing seeing the crash on the news, so I posted and went to bed. I had phone calls from Las Vegas, the entire way to my subway stop. I thought it was Hubby calling me with more information, so I grabbed my cell and yelled something like "What?". He goes, "It wasn't me calling you". Then I get another one, as I exited the train and I call from my car phone (the pleasures of On Star) and again my hubby goes, "It's not me calling you". So I knew you would all be concerned. Very depressed about this crash. Cause I ride in that lead car, rather then the back one. | ||

| This space blog entry for New Scientist, Watching the world's biggest machine come to life, includes a video explaining in non-musical plain English about the LHC. It's sort of a companion piece to the rap.
And this Discover article, Nevermind The Black Hole Hoopla: Here's How the LHC Could Blow Up the World (of Physics), mentions a few likely ways the LHC could revolutionize physics, including one scenario which I hadn't even thought to contemplate: There is one possibility, however unlikely, that probably keeps the physicists most closely connected with the LHC up at night: that they will find nothing. They will smash particles for years on end and find nothing major that they didn't know before. This will cause much consternation among particle physicists and much awkwardness for the LHC's boosters. Former CERN chief Chris Llewellyn-Smith told The Telegraph that "it would be a little embarrassing for me, who spent years promoting the LHC and getting it funded." But, he says, it could also force scientists to totally rethink their view of the world, meaning finding nothing could eventually be the most exciting option. Or maybe he's just saying that to cover his ass in advance.

| It was a test. It was only a test. If it had been an actual armageddon, your component atoms would have already been smushed together into one really, really, reeeeally tiny, but extremely dense bit of no longer sentient matter.
Apparently there was no actual colliding, just sending a few measly protons relatively slowly around the ring: The organization, known by its French acronym CERN, fired the protons — a type of subatomic particle — around the tunnel in stages, several kilometers (miles) at a time. Now that the beam has been successfully tested in clockwise direction, CERN plans to send it counterclockwise. Eventually the two beams will be fired in opposite directions with the aim of smashing together protons to see how they are made. . . . Gillies told the AP that the most dangerous thing that could happen would be if a beam at full power were to go out of control, and that would only damage the accelerator itself and burrow into the rock around the tunnel. And full power is probably a year away.

| hm. yes. found this for a bargain and decided to take it home. there is something about Asian horror that fascinates me, makes me giggle. gonna watch it in an hour or two, so completely in sinc with the current Rumpus wave :-)
Thanks to his series of ghost stories, "Ju-on", Japanese director Takashi Shimizu has become one of the most recognized names of the New Wave of Asian horror cinema, the movement of young Asian directors that since the late 90s has produced some of the best and most original horror movies of the last years. The enormous success of his "Ju-on" series took Shimizu to the U.S., in order to direct a remake of the third installment of the series ("Ju-on: The Grudge"), named simply as "The Grudge"; but right before working on the remake, Shimizu took some days with fellow director Shinya Tsukamoto and a small crew to make a very low-budget horror movie, pretty much on the style he used to make when "Ju-on" was a straight to video release, but this time with a very different kind of story. Masuoka (Shinya Tsukamoto) is a freelance cameraman almost completely detached from the world and entirely focused on his preference for videotaping and doing camera-work. Onde day, he accidentally tapes the suicide of a man named Arei Furoki (Kazuhiro Nakahara) on a subway station. The strange characteristics of this event, makes Masuoka to be obsessed with the idea of a fear so powerful that only death can erase, so in an attempt to understand Furoki's fear he descends into the underground tunnels of Tokio, discovering the entrance to a bizarre cavern that seems like a passage to the underworld. Is in this caverns where he finds a naked girl (Tomoi Miyashita) chained to the wall. He unchains her and takes her to his apartment, but soon he discovers that this girl (whom he names "F") is not a normal person, and that her presence in his world will make a darker side of him to come out. "Marebito" was written by Chiaki Konaka (better known as the writer of the famous anime, "Serial Experiments Lain"), and like most of his works, it is a dark psychological story with a slight cometary on the relationship between humans and the technology they produce. Narrated by Masuoka, the story is told from his perspective, so we are taken along him through his discovery of mysteries that should be better kept secret and the terrific consequences of his actions. It is very Lovecraftian in the sense that, like in the stories by H.P. Lovecraft, we have a main character who may not be entirely sane, and whom his curiosity takes him to the darker sides of human nature. His relationship with the strange girl "F", and his attempts to establish communication with her become the focal point of the plot of "Marebito", although like in other works by Konaka, reality is not always what it seems. It seems that this "return to roots" was really beneficial for Takashi Shimizu, as the work he offers in "Marebito" is once again a very fresh and original horror movie that proves that there is more in this young director than the "Ju-on" series. By working again on a shoestring budget, Shimizu is able to capture the simple and monotone life of Masuoka, and with the use of digital video he mimics the world as his main character sees it: a world through the camera lens. While the movie moves at a very slow pace, it really is an improvement over the style of using disjointed story lines in "Ju-on", and never falls into the trap of being boring or repetitive (a common flaw of the "Ju-on" movies). However, a trait kept from "Ju-on", is Shimizu's skill to create ominous haunting atmospheres with common everyday objects, this time, the video screens and what's on them is the focus of the film. Shinya Tsukamoto is better known as the director of the remarkable and influential films like "Tetsuo" (1989) and "Tokyo Fist" (1995), but here he offers his talents as an actor in a film where he plays the main character. While a very talented director, Tsukamoto is not really a great actor, and both he and Shimizu seem to be aware of that, so his portrait of Masuoka is conceived as a typical man with obsessive behavior, entering the unknown. The movie's highlight is Tomomi Miyashita, who gives life to the feral child "F", with a frighteningly believable performance that definitely gives the chills. Kazuhiro Nakahara, Miho Ninagawa and Shun Sugata appear in supporting roles, but their appearances are limited, as the movie focuses entirely on Masuoka and the consequences of his relationship with "F". "Marebito" is an excellent example of how imagination and a good plot can make a film work even with the most limited resources. Of course, the movie suffers the most in the special effects department, with some of the visuals looking painfully amateurish (although probably that was the intention). The use of digital camera may be annoying to those expecting a good looking film, but instead of being a flaw, its use in the film gives the story a realistic tone, as if we were really watching a person's descent into madness. Some people have criticized the convoluted plot of Konaka's story, filled with many details and references that often make no sense or have twisted meanings in the movie; however, I find the storyline captivating because of that unpredictability, and the fact that Shimizu moves away from the ghost stories that have become typical of Asian horror is really refreshing. With his "Ju-on" ghost stories, Takashi Shimizu became known worldwide as a major horror director, but personally I think that "Marebito" is the movie that truly reveals him as a horror author. It's not a movie destined to be a hit, but it's one that shows a different take on horror and while maybe "The Grudge" is the movie that most people relate to Shimizu, but personally, I think that "Marebito" is a much better and more satisfying movie. 8/10

just home. went to see the doctor, but due to traffic jam stuff i arrived at 15.31 and my appointment was at 15.30. because it was my regular GP's (let's just use the English word here which makes it easier) brother (so the assistant told me this morning when i called, oh i then said to myself, so it's a family of GP's then...) and i have no idea what he looks like, but when i had just seated myself in the waiting room after telling the assistant i had arrived, a muslem woman waiting then said that the GP had called someone twice who wasn't in and she figured it'd be me and that he had already left. yeah, i saw a guy leave yes, but no idea it would be the GP. normally, if you have an appointment at 15.30, you have to wait about 10 minutes if not longer, so 1 minute late...? he must have thought 'thank God it's Friday' when leaving so soon... the assistant then called my GP, told him what i had told her about the complaints i had and so i was given paracetamol with codeinesulphate. hm. i'm not gonna take that. had my share of codeine as a teen :-) but decided to google for codeinesulphate anyway, and landed on the psychonut, eh, psychonaut site... hilarious. maybe it's the cold that makes my head spin a little weirder thoughtwise, but cowbells, particled french-swiss fries and some psychonutters... i do feel a bit better, i made some porridge my grandmother used to make us when we were kids. it's green or mungo beans, boiled until mush, then add indonesian palm sugar, gula jawa, and some coconut milk. for a bite one can add some ginger. it's delicious and nutritious too. and it did help me be able to be outdoors today, for i had to go and interview two managing directors of Esaote Group, they make probes and ultrasound equipment for hospitals, human and veterinary. interesting stuff. tired now and signing off, have a good weekend!

that last bit. keeping the dimensions to yourself :-) those strings, they talked about that yesterday. happens so, they'll start running the thing on Sept. 10th, Nino's birthday. and some people fear that when they switch it on, they might make the whole planet disappear into a nothingness :-) i for one am interested in whether you can also discover that if you throw cooked potatoes at eachother long enough, they will turn into mash first and then suddenly vanish before the eye and outside somewhere will re-appear as particled fries :-)

| Looks interesting G...
Spurred me to revisit this article I found mid-August at Discover Magazine: Nothingness of Space Could Illuminate the Theory of Everything Weird, weird stuff may be discovered by the LHC. The final four paragraphs of the article with some highlights of my own... Some researchers, though, expect the LHC to turn up evidence of something very new indeed—extra dimensions of space. According to M theory—the latest, most audacious attempt to explain the fundamental workings of physics—the space around us may be made of as many as 11 dimensions. M theory proposes that the ultimate building blocks of the universe are not particles but tiny vibrating loops of energy, or strings, as physicists call them. For complicated mathematical reasons, those loops need 11 dimensions in which to vibrate; otherwise the theory doesn’t work. We experience only four dimensions (three of space and one of time) in everyday life because the other seven are supposedly so small that we do not notice them. They become evident only on the subatomic scale. One way to picture this is to imagine a tightrope walker on a high wire. To the tightrope walker the wire is essentially one-dimensional, a line pointing in one direction. But an ant crawling on the wire would see it as a three-dimensional object; the ant could crawl completely around the wire, experiencing a dimension that is inaccessible to the tightrope walker. String theorists would say we’re like the tightrope walker, except that our “rope” is an 11-dimensional space, of which we are able to perceive only four dimensions. Advocates of M theory have had a tough time convincing some of their colleagues about the reality of all those extra dimensions, but the LHC might win some converts. If extra dimensions really exist, some of the particles produced by the collisions inside the big accelerator may slip away into other dimensions, and particles from higher dimensions could spill into our four-dimensional world. So if physicists notice a shortfall or a surplus in their particle tallies at the accelerator, it might be the first evidence of the wild new physics to come. “Probably whatever is true will in fact be crazy, because historically the truth in physics always seems to be more far-out than anything you could have imagined,” Baez says. Some physicists like to think that M theory will form the basis of what they call a theory of everything, a set of laws that will completely describe the universe in all its strangeness, where dark energy, quantum theory, extra dimensions, and magazine readers will all fit into one tidy package. But in the end, the key to cosmic truth may well come from another window on reality, the looming void. A good theory of nothing just might be the theory of everything physicists have sought for so long. ____________________________________ Well, all I'll say at this time is I really like having those extra dimensions all to myself and I won't give them up until and unless I'm absolutely forced to, so there!

| love the cake. wouldn't mind a few of those butterflies. oh, yeah, don't ask me how i found this (so not looking, you know.. the world's so much bigger after all!)
Bob Thiele, jr. my friend and musical collaborator, put together a great band including my old friend Ted Baker on piano (with whom I worked on Pete Townshend’s “Psychoderelict” and was eager to work with again – Ted had since been on the road and recorded with Steely Dan and others and continues to play for “The Lion King” when he’s not on the road) Don Falzone on Bass (Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright, Ute Lemper) and Ben Perowsky on drums (Joan as Policewoman and others) and Bob on guitar (written songs for Ray Charles, Bonnie Raitt, is currently on “The Office” in the band The Scrantones, and has produced and written for many more – Bob produced my track of “Don’t Give Up On Me” for “The OC”. And special guests and friends Holly Palmer and Victoria Lecta Cave helped me out on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”.

| hey there... got a real painful throat due to some flu-ish bug i caught when interviewing the chairwoman of a major school network in Maastricht. the minute i walked into the school building, various virusses and all that came running my way, i could smell it in the air and no, i am so not a person for huge get together places! the luxury of a laptop is you can work when in bed, so that is what i'm doing now. and probably tomorrow too. hm. if i have to sneeze, something inside my nose hurts so much it makes me cry (for crying out louder!), still, there's a war raging inside the body now, i sure hope the leuco-white thingies know how to get rid of the bad guys.
ah, so there are two ~Steve's then eh? even so, steely dan stuff is not forbidden, lol. i bumped into them when i was editing a review for All About Jazz, a Joey DeFrancesco album? he was on tour with them :-) to get stuff or collect an item in order to be able to sell it some time in the future with profit is investment, or speculation, or making money, you name it. i bought and sold stuff, with a profit. but those books etc. were bought with the purpose of selling them. i still have a beautiful vase of a specific Dutch brand of ceramics that is a collector's item and i'll be selling that one some day... i liked it then, but also knew that it would sell easily. that's what you get for living the antiques-secondhand market-life i have for some years :-) but that guitar.. no, that is part of childhood, part of a family legacy.

It is my belief that the "value" of a possession should be judged monetarily only when external worldly circumstances absolutely force the issue for some reason beyond our control. I never collect things because "they will be worth so much more someday," I only collect them because of what they are worth to me now.

| WHAT A SHADE ABOUT | DimSkip setting the Salerno record straight... | |
| Mr. Salerno of SHAMblog on what is apparently a fairly common I.D. mixup:
Much as I'd love to keep the pleasant illusions going, it also pains me to admit that no, I am not "that" Steve Salerno. (I assume you're referring to the guitarist, who has quite a cult-type following in jazz circles.) I am often confused with him, as well as with the artist/illustrator; in fact, the New York Times once hired "the other" Steve Salerno to illustrate a piece that I'd written. I believe that was the time that we got each other's checks! My official playing days ended back in Noo Yawk in the early 70s. I was a horn man (tenor, alto), and like most such players of the era, a would-be Coltrane clone. Fagen/Becker are amazing virtuoso artists, collectively and separately. Though I'm forever accumulating new tracks to play, Kamakiriad always seems to make it back into my CD player before long. ("Caught my father...mowin' the lawn...come on, Daddy, get in, let's go..." I actually take my hands off the wheel and clap in my car. Which, I grant you, is worse than talking on a cell phone while driving.) And then there's Century's End, the song written for the film with Michael J. Fox, as I recall. I could go on and on, but I'm preaching to the choir, and it's a busy week...." ______________________ So even though he's not THE Steve Salerno of jazz, he still happens to be a jazz-oriented Steve Salerno, so the mistake is understandable. I still enjoy his blog and will continue to read it because I find it of interest in and of itself. Indeed the topical stuff discussed there is how/why I found it in the first place on my Googling journeys. His shared interests in music (Stevie Wonder's "Ribbon In The Sky" is currently featured in his "jazz corner") and SD is just a nice synchronistical bonus as so often happens. Wait, I forgot... Are we still allowed to mention SD around here? ;-) Oh well, I figure since I'm only correcting something that was minorly brought up before the recent SD disenfranchisement, I thought I could "grandfather" the topic in this once. LOL!
