You think English is easy?
1) The bandage was wound around the wound. 2) The farm was used to produce produce. 3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse. 4) We must polish the Polish furniture. 5) He could lead if he would get the lead out. 6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert. 7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present 8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum. 9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes. 10) I did not object to the object. 11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid. 12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row 13) They were too close to the door to close it. 14) The buck does funny things when the does are present. 15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line. 16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow. 17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail. 18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.. 19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests. 20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend? Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France .. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese.. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it? If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick' ? You lovers of the English language might enjoy this .. There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP..' It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takesUP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP... When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so......it is time to shut UP! Oh one more thing: What is the first thing you do in the morning & the last thing you do at night? U-P

CV FAIL:
Truell Hyde, Baylor University’s vice provost for research and the driving force behind the school’s recently announced research consortium, is a man of many talents. Hyde is a terrific musician — he plays both the French horn and piano, with his horn-playing heard on Steely Dan’s acclaimed album Aja — but he’ll quickly change the subject to Baylor’s progress toward its Baylor 2012 research goals. While a student at Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma, Hyde made extra cash as a session musician, going into a recording studio, being handed sheet music, sitting down and playing. Most of the time, he didn’t know who or what he was recording the music for, he said. Hyde would occasionally laugh when he would see a commercial on television and recognize the background music as his own, or walk through a grocery store and hear his French horn Muzak piping over the speakers. Claim to fame Without knowing, Hyde became a part of music history with his contributions to Aja, which Rolling Stone ranks at No. 145 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. “It’s my little claim to fame, that I work for a guy who played on a Steely Dan album,” Honza said with a laugh. His reputation as a musician follows him to this day, too. “The other day, he got a phone call to go do a gig somewhere, and we just died laughing,” Hyde’s wife, Carliss, said. “I hadn’t even heard that word in about 20 years.” http://www.wacotrib.com/news/content/ne ... lhyde.html The link with Steely Dan and Aja is of course ABSOLUTELY FALSE. Indeed, the man who played on Aja and Royal Scam is Richard or Dick "Slyde" Hyde. He is the legendary studio and jazz musician, compatriot of sax player Pete Christieb. Slyde Hyde played *trombone* on tracks including the Caves of Altamira, Sign in Stranger, The Fez, and Royal Scam from the Royal Scam album. On Aja the Brass section was comprised of Chuck Findlay, Lou McCreary, and Dick "Slyde" Hyde. Saxes & flutes include Jim Horn, Bill Perkins, Wayne Shorter, Plas Johnson, Tom Scott and Jackie Kelso. Dick "Slyde" Hyde again played Black Cow, Deacon Blues, Home at Last, I Got the News, and Josie. There is no French horn nor a Truell W. Hyde (who would have been 21) credited on the album Aja. In contrast, Dick "Slyde" Hyde was a seasoned veteran who had laid down tracks with The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, The Rolling Stones, Neil Diamond, Madonna, Prince, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Rod Stewart, Steely Dan, The Beach Boys, Chicago, Herbie Hancock, Count Basie, Freddie Hubbard, Al Jarreau, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Liza Minnelli, David Lee Roth, George Harrison, Quincy Jones, Tom Jones, The Carpenters, Nelson Riddle, Rickie Lee Jones, Bee Gees, Toto, Carole King, The Jacksons, The Temptations, Commodores, Four Tops, Lee Ritenour, Danny Elfman, John Williams, Ringo Starr, The Doobie Brothers, The Pointer Sisters, Dionne Warwick, Christopher Cross, Tom Scott, Michael McDonald, Captain and Tennille, Boz Scaggs, Supertramp, The Doors, Sam and Dave, The Drifters, and The Coasters. Here is the REAL Mr. Hyde's myspace page, where you can check out some stellar jazz: http://www.myspace.com/slydehyde Unbelievable. What possess men to do such? Gov. Bill Richardson claimed for 30 years he was drafted by MLB when he never was. Certainly did not help his POTUS bid.

hey N... there's something about country... it's cosy, without pretense often and warm. in between work i have been watching clips on youtube, chet atkins stuff.. guitar thingies...
strolling through the past somehow. yes Dimskip, had a nice time leaning on stage with my ears right in the monitor... too bad my camera only has a 2GB card or else i would have been able to record complete songs with the videocamera in it...now i only have snippets... and yes, it was raining. Leuven is a wonderful OLD town, still small, but neat and cosy. too bad the exhibition of the 15th century artist i wanted to visit on sunday morning was already sold out at 11 am... to groups!! no way i would have been able to enjoy viewing ancient art when people are running around in groups.. i was a bit disappointed, but also tired from the night before. it has been a fresh shower, kind of, in many ways. walking about in the rain with an old umbrella, it was nice. very nice. and yes, that manhattan sign is hilarious. when i saw it the first time i couldn't believe my eyes but had to turn right at once because there were cars behind me. i then went back a few more times, even.. until the traffic was very slow and i could park the car for a moment and take this shot :-) ok. back to work now.........

Gina, Sounds like you had a good time at the RLJ show. Cool. Nice pics too. I particularly like the two night shots of the town, this one and this one. Looks like it had been raining? General wetness really adds something to night scenes like that imo. I also liked the Manhattan sign.

Yes, we had a very nice time indeed. You couldn't hope to meet two finer people than Angel and Mr. Angel. :-) Plus they went way out of their way and above and beyond in the effort to meet up and I really appreciated that they took the time. It didn't feel like we were meeting for the first time at all, more like old friends getting together.
But now we can each officially attest that the other is more than just a collection of virtual pixels somewhere. LOL! My camera's out of commission, though, so Angel's the only one with any real proof.

Just Pondering
1. Is it good if a vacuum really sucks? 2. Why is the third hand on the watch called the second hand? 3. If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would we ever know? 4. If Webster wrote the first dictionary, where did he find the words? 5. Why do we say something is out of whack? What is a whack? 6. Why does "slow down" and "slow up" mean the same thing? 7. Why does "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean the same thing? 8. Why do "tug" boats push their barges? 9. Why do we sing "Take me out to the ball game" when we are already there? 10. Why are they called "stands" when they are made for sitting? 11. Why is it called "after dark" when it really is "after light"? 12. Doesn't "expecting the unexpected" make the unexpected expected? 13. Why are a "wise man" and a "wise guy" opposites? 14. Why do "overlook" and "oversee" mean opposite things? 15. Why is "phonics" not spelled the way it sounds? 16. If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay you to do it? 17. If all the world is a stage, where is the audience sitting? 19. If you are cross-eyed and have dyslexia, can you read all right? 20. Why is bra singular and panties plural? 21. Why do you press harder on the buttons of a remote control when you know the batteries are dead? 22. Why do we put suits in garment bags and garments in a suitcase? 23. How come abbreviated is such a long word? 24. Why do we wash bath towels? Aren't we clean when we use them? 25. Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle? 26. Why do they call it a TV set when you only have one? 27. Christmas, what other time of the year do you sit in front of a dead tree, and eat candy out of your socks?

Never been to the Masonic Auditorium... hope the acoutics are good. I think I'll shoot for the internet request night, seeing how I've already heard every song from Aja and The Royal Scam live except The Fez, and one year the band did a short instrumental of that in the opening medley. So I think I'll take a chance on the internet request night if the tickets are reasonable. Btw, did anyone ever win Walter's "name that reggae influence" contest? I gave it a shot but never heard anything back. Maybe it was another elaborate hoax and there's one of me born every minute...

Very nice interview of Ellie from 1986 was rerun today on Fresh Air. You can listen at that link or read the transcript here. And if her name is not immediately recognizable (as it wasn't to me), I suggest you check the piece out for a pleasant surprise. Coincidentally, Ken Levine, one of my own regular blog-reads, knew her personally and did a nice little write-up too. I caught the radio interview first today, then found Ken's blog entry late tonight.

Some pretty good advice ...
* Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong. * Keep skunks and bankers at a distance. * Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. * A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor. * Words that soak into your ears are whispered...not yelled. * Meanness don't jes' happen overnight. * Forgive your enemies. It messes up their heads. * Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you. * It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge. * You cannot unsay a cruel word. * Every path has a few puddles. * When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty. * The best sermons are lived, not preached. * Most of the stuff people worry about ain't never gonna happen anyway. * Don't judge folks by their relatives. * Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. * Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time. * Don't interfere with somethin' that ain't bothering you none. * Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a Rain dance. * If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'. * Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got. * The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with watches you from the mirror every mornin'. * Always drink upstream from the herd. * Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment. * Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back in. * If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around. * Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. * Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.

(from the story "Kauai", by Ezra Titus 2005)
Life without the specter of death looming over us at times would be a lesser miracle. And, as for miracles, the bigger they are, the more useful is the ability brought forth from within the one who performs them. This is the law of life in time. NYB posted his personal thoughts on his correspondence and friendship with Ezra over on the Yellow. I found a few stories I had saved back in 2005 and 2006, because I felt they were different than the others. And showed Ezra as a writer who could have or should have... or maybe not. These words are the final paragraph of the story and followed by "The End". Which is very appropriate.

hey DimSkip, yes, saw your mails, even though you are hard to reach with a bouncing messenger service it seems! but that's the beauty of internet, there are more ways than one to try and find a cyber connection.
re: Ezra. it's always a shock and sad when one in your own age group passes away. but the last 2 years i have been to so many funerals.... and today it's been 22 years since my own brother died. and somehow it is the easiest thing to simply believe in the fact that when it's time to go, it's time to go. when my disabled uncle died and i witnessed the last week of his life, and how his mind was still functioning as always... you sense the enigma of LIFE and DEATH and how it is, or seems to be a process that has its own pace. and even when people fall ill and beyond their own wish have to say goodbye to life, their family and friends and everything they know... there is strength and something essential understanding when one accepts and has made peace with it... and there are accidents, and assassinations and suicides. death happens in various conditions to various people under various circumstances. children who are killed in war zones. people who die in floods and earthquakes. car accidents. airplane crashes. famine. life goes on. always.

Shocking news about Ezra. Not much I can say beyond that, really other than I admit to natural curiosity as to the how and/or why of his passing. But out of respect for the family's privacy, I wouldn't want to get into that here anyway. Just because I'm curious doesn't mean I HAVE to know.
G, Thanks for the tasty surprise! I sent you email(s) about it. And I too enjoyed the Belgium summer pics. Always interesting to see what the other side of the globe looks like. :-)

thank you, gals :-)
and since we're speaking of essence... today's been a bit weird, it started with a cryptic message on a steely dan fan board and then i had a hunch and googled his name... Ezra Titus passed away on July 30th. kind of a shock to some extent, we did communicate for a while and i loved his writing and understood where he was coming from. condolences for his family and friends. although we stopped communicating since somewhat september 2007, the world according to Ezra did cross my mind from time to time. there isn't much on the net that reminds of Ezra's writing, alas. but i did find a collection of pictures he collected and shared and used for his stories and such. much to my surprise did i find one of Gaucho i once sent him :-) it's one of the things i remember very clearly, Ezra loved pets and animals a lot. R.I.P. Ezra, and when hell freezes over, we know who is responsible :-)

speaking of health care ....
The American Medical Association has weighed in on Obama's new health care package. The Allergists were in favor of scratching it, but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves. The Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve. Meanwhile, Obstetricians felt certain everyone was laboring under a misconception, while the Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted. Pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!", while the Pediatricians said, "Oh, grow up!" The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it. Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing and the Internists claimed it would indeed be a bitter pill to swallow. The Plastic Surgeons opined that this proposal would "put a whole new face on the matter". The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists were pissed off at the whole idea. Anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and those softy Cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no. In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the assholes in Washington.

And yes, maybe wanting to save the world, or make it a better one. An old woman (in her 80s) died in our village, a few days ago. She as a little dog, 2 years old. He needs a new home. N. always chitchats with her brother-in-law, also already 86 years of age. This man has a labrador and the dogs love to play together. So he told N. about the passing of his wife's sister. And how they are looking for someone to adopt the dog. But since the word got out that the old woman died... some sick individuals broke into her house yesterday, to steal stuff. How on earth can people be so... evil? In the meantime, trying to work hard to write soccer articles as well as help Souris cope on her own, now that her little brother Clochard has been adopted yesterday...

G., what a coincidence -- a few nights ago I had a somewhat similar dream about DF and WB. It's faded away now, but I do remember being very surprised by the fact that DF was actually a very warm sort of person, and feeling good because meeting him wasn't a letdown, but a very pleasant surprise. :)
The "war of the worlds" dream is like many I've had in the past -- trying to convince people of something that's imminently dangerous. Guess we both are trying to save the world, subconsciously anyway. :) So far Sasha doesn't do much but peep. He did say "Hello" in a tiny voice, when he was in the pet shop, but he has stopped doing that, and that's OK with us, since it probably reminds him of his captivity. Yesterday we had an errand in the shopping center where the pet shop is located, so we both went in and the woman who'd sold Sasha to us happened to be working there. We explained, as nicely as we could, that it was a shame about his missing toe, and that he had seemed totally traumatized when we first brought him home. She claimed the missing toe was a birth defect (highly unlikely) and that he'd come that way from the breeder. She also made excuses about his seeming trauma, claiming "all cockatiels are nervous when moved to a new environment". That's total BS, as I bred cockatiels for several years and have lived with many of them without ever seeing anything like this situation with Sasha. Anyway, we tried our best, but unfortunately I doubt very much whether it helped her understand that she and the other employees need to take much better care of the birds they sell. I'm just glad Sasha is here with two people who dote on him. At least that's one happy ending out of thousands and thousands... DS, good song choices. I like country music too...my great-uncle was a semi-professional fiddler, so I grew up with it.

DS, thanks for the music, when i was small there was a lot of country music in our house, my father (as most people from Indonesia, the Dutch-Indo's anyway, LOVE country music) always listened to country or played it on his guitar.
Nigey, how sad to learn about Sasha but how COOL he recovered when he realized he was in a GOOD place now. i so wish i could just release every animal in the world, imprisoned one way or another, in homes where people do not know what they have living under their roof or even aware of the fact that animals have their own needs and personalities, or even have a personality. you can't say this about all humans, eh :-)? i bet Sasha can hum a FZ tune (or one of your own?) in no time :-) would like to see that, of course! and also forgot: i had a dream this morning, woke up at 4.. because a thunderstorm started... i was dreaming of a War of the Worlds... crazy crazy stuff and i know it's been the second time around i dream about this... BUT last week, i had a dream about Steely Dan, imagine that. i was wondering about PGE in Italy and read his blog and that must have triggered a weird dream of some sort of press conference... i was sitting jammed in between DF (left) and WB (right) and it was also very informal... i was almost invisible and just observed it all.. one thing i do remember very clearly, was that DF wasn't 'cold', so i thought, 'oh the man has a heart'... and WB asked me how i knew a certain musician named Minuit.. i have no clue who that is, but in the dream i knew who he was talking about and i said 'via internet and Facebook', which kind of made WB respond quite well, you can imagine.. i have no idea what i was doing there and i also remember dreaming this "what am i doing here?"... first time EVER to dream about this. probably also the last lol. general sphere was, there were some journalistst there, a few musicians, like tending to their instruments when talking to others... all very laid-back, yes. funny eh? the War of the World dream wasn't. i had to convince my family (my parents were a lot younger, so this was somehow childhood era) we had to leave because we were on top of a mountain in a big house and strange people were coming.. they all worshipped the big round circle-shaped vessels in the sky... who were coming, i could see them already... everybody thought they were friendly, but i knew they were here to destroy... so we had to pack up, hurry and leave... and we did have to fight off some small insect-like mechanic monsters... the people who worshipped these aliens... they had interesting faces too, like they came from the Peter Paul Rubens era... dressed in white with light-blue patterns...and when i looked at the window of the house, i could see sooo many people, all in white, with some light-blue.. they were all awaiting their savior :-) and then i woke up at 4. one of the dogs was restless and before we knew it, thunder and heavy rain...

We brought home Sasha, the male cockatiel, about two weeks ago...first thing we noticed was that he had one segment of one toe and a claw missing, as if it had been gnawed off..and at first he seemed totally traumatized, hanging on to the front of his cage as if he was catatonic, and not eating. After a couple days he began to eat, and then gradually he started noticing when we'd talk to him. Finally he climbed onto Eric's shoulder by himself, without any prompting, and he hung on there as if he never wanted to let go...He is so smart, and so perceptive...he just needed to recover from whatever trauma he had experienced in the pet shop. We feel he will be OK, thank goodness.
Animals are so much more perceptive than many people give them credit for being. They are here with us, for better or worse, and it is our responsibility to deal with their needs. G., I understand the complexity of the situation you're in with Souris, and I know you will find a good home for her one way or the other. I wish I could help...but hang in there, it will work out!

if i want to keep her, there is a lot of work-patience-effort involved. the dogs. the man dog (lol). the danger of the outside world: hunters who shoot cats for the heck of it; cars; poison.
or i could build a cat house like so many people seem to be doing these days... to allow their cats to go outside, but not roam free.. i don't know. all i know is, Souris listens to me when i snap my fingers, she comes running. she then looks at me as in waiting why she has to come.. i say 'good girl souris' and stroke her on her face or under her chin.. and then she is dismissed :-)

yesterday has been a surreal day.
in december last year, an old friend of my brother and me unexpectedly passed away at age 44. he was a musician and teacher and poet, writer. the day before yesterday, his widow didn't collect their two grrls, age 6 and 9, from school, so a neighbour went looking for her and found her dead at home. cardiac arrest. so now the two children have lost both father and mother in less than 8 months..the family was just getting things together and next week, July 22, was supposed to be Ed's birthday he shared with his twin sister... Lucienne (42) died of a broken heart. You hear about this when people are old, in their 80s or 90s.. never when people are so young.

Last night Bill Moyers exposed on his show for the first time the health insurance industry's secret campaign against Michael Moore and his film, "Sicko." It contained a stunning revelation and admission by a top health insurance executive -- the former head of publicity for CIGNA, one of the top health insurance companies in the country -- that the disinformation and attacks on Michael and the film were extensive and well-planned. Their job was to stop the movie from reaching a wide audience (and, more importantly, from having the widespread political impact the industry feared "Sicko" would have).
Wendell Potter, former Head of Corporate Communications at CIGNA (which provides health insurance to nearly 70 percent of the Fortune 100 companies) admits that, in fact, "Sicko" "hit the nail on the head" and told the real truth about how much better people in other countries have it when it comes to their health care.

a finger-snappin' deluxe.. Rickie Lee Jones accompanies a new experience in our kitten training camp. when snapping the fingers, the kittens come running. the first time because they consider it prey.. the next few times because they understand they're called and need to drop whatever it is they're doing... Souris, the white one, she is very bright. she comes and i stroke her little head, saying she does good... she looks at me, sits by me for a few secs and hurries off again to do what kittens do :-)
and where there is Evil, there also seems to be remorse? man dog now allows his sympathy for pets, feline and canine, rule over the evil streak... and knows there is no use for the dogs and the cats to be formally introduced and trained to live together. because they don't. have to live together. all that is necessary is for the dogs to understand there are guests in the house, who sometimes keep the living room occupied playing golf, or slipper surfing, or conducting heavy sibling fights... when they return to their own cornerhouse, the dogs can enter the room again, have a few seconds to sniff around the kitten house and then sit back and relax, go to sleep or give me indignified looks... but that seems to be okay now... it's also amazing how these little creatures supervise what you do, when cleaning the litterbox. they really check every move, making sure you do it all right and not leave a little something smelly behind :-) i have always taken in people who needed help in the lives before this one (with N)... N is not used in doing this, and in this case it's not people, but pets... but i wish he weren't open to the negative vibes that roam the world, looking for victims and people to use, abuse... the essence of life truly is weird, fascinating but also scary sometimes... there's darkness and moist dungeons in all of us... if we know what lies buried there, either as a heritage through the gene pool or because of forgotten experiences and imprinted memories...if we know this about ourselves, it can't take us by surprise and make us do things we do not want to do in vulnerable times or moments...

Maybe it's the Feline guardian angel who whispered into my ear to help these little ones :-) I am not religious, but sometimes i wonder about evil, the energy. It's not that N. is a bad person. But i think he's very susceptible for negative energy and evil. Whether it's evoked by playing Xbox first shooter games (Far Cry is what he's into now), or other 'weak' moments so something evil can creep in and do its.. evil :-) It's like the streams of consciousness and awareness in people also. Many are 'sleepers', as they say. Not aware. Not conscious. Years ago, i got 'proof' of this when my mother all of a sudden said to me "you and your father are awake and i am asleep"... which creeped me out... it was her speaking and it was not. Another incident occurred when i was studying the tides and the moon, but mostly how people acted and responded when it was new moon, or first quarter, the whole cycles. New moon is when people are closest or most IN their selves, if you're aware of the vibrations involved you can reach these levels within and for yourself, and as such center and focus better. Awareness and senses, as well as the rational mind work best around or at New Moon. And so my mother said something about that as well, out of the blue, when she had company over, a friend, they were chitchatting and all of a sudden she turned to me and confirmed what i was thinking about... It didn't really freak me out, but also confirmed what i had read about how energy forces, or angels, or beloved persons, or other entities can 'use' individuals as 'hosts' temporarily and convey messages. Yeah. this sounds loony moon, i know :-) You're free to believe it or not... A friend of mine, an artist, she emailed me the other day, asking if i also sensed a certain degree of 'weird' in the air... maybe it all concides with the strange weather, wind, rain, then sun, thunder, lightning...

hi angel, N...
in fact it aren't the canines giving trouble. it's that man dog that is creating mayhem and panic attacks. he refuses to watch the dogs and even wanted to let the kittens walk loose and the dogs in the same room. i know he didn't want cats in the house at first, but it is an emergency and only temporary. it is like the twilight zone alas now and i am keeping in mind i do what i do and what is good for the kittens. the lion cub is already at a friend of mine, he took both tigers :-) a friend of the ~Dutch children's book writer Jan Paul Schutten emailed me after JP put a message about it up on his blog. her mother is willing to adopt the black and white kitten... now i no longer insist they need to stay together... they need to move to people quick because it is not safe for them here because of Nino. he is the threat, not the dogs! yes, i wish i could solve that problem :-) but i am not going to give up the dogs and leave... ego. first he helps out, i am glad he does... also because i thought he was a genuine pet and animal friend, which he claims he is... and then he spits it back in my face saying i am not appreciative.. what is it with some people they need to be told that what they do is good? anyway, there is much hatred and anger blackening my soul now, the kind of energy he has around him apparently, so i am grounding it and letting it go.. because it is not my energy!!! in the meantime, it is cosy here. the kittens are quiet and asleep, more hours than they did at the neighbour... which is good, because they also get good kitten food and can grow better...their reflexes are amazing, they're like flying monkeys, they climb, they jump, i enjoy me evening hour of Kitten TV... (with the door to the living closed and the dogs either upstairs or softly crying at the door... but they don't get traumatized by being left on the other side, right... so it don't hurt them and the kittens can kick off some energy) rather here and for me to stand some darkness in human nature, than to know the kittens were in a belgian pet store or shelter, with so many diseases floating round... and they're going to the Netherlands to good folk. one of them is, at least, and i have high hopes the other one will find a new home as well!! at age 45, the disappointments of life and people, or the ones you share a house with.... it gives a bad feeling for just a little while, and then you wade through it.. it is something universal also. i have seen some good sides of the man dog in the past 2 days... but his ego ruins it for himself, because he then wants compliments for good behaviour... and expresses this in a nasty negative way... and i don't mind being open and public about it. to see human nature for what it is, and how we ourselves can always strive to be the best of what we have inside of us... and not let negativity get a hold of us...

G., I know it must be a real handful with the kittens and the dogs right now, and I really sympathize (I used to have a cat, a dog, and as many as ten or eleven birds at one time). Unless your dogs are fighting breeds (pit bulls, etc.) they'll learn to accept the kittens, no matter what it might seem like at the beginning. Just take a few deep breaths and keep reminding the dogs to "play nice". :) It might be a good idea to keep them separate at first, or at least to keep a sharp watch on what goes on, until the two species become more used to each other. And of course if you can deal with the chaos in the meantime, you'll certainly be able to find homes for them should you not be able or willing to keep them. I wish I could take the little "lion cub" one, sigh...
P.S. My new cockatiel is named Sasha (after Alex, the late African Grey parrot).

My nerves are wrecking me. Yesterday i brought the kittens into our house. The neighbour was gonna take them to a pet store or a Wallonian shelter. I wasn't too keen on that. So decided to take them in and well, take it from there. A panic attack came over me when they were frolicking about in our tiny living room. Nino was out with the dogs. Oh my, what energy do these little ones have... no way we can let them run with the dogs present... Panic attack number two when Nino said to introduce feline to canine. He wanted me to let the kittens walk about freely and not keep the dogs at safe bay. Awful moments! Sascha wanted to smell their butts and she has a mind totally zoned into 'food'. She grabbed the chance to finish what the kittens had left, food food, no matter if it is kitten food, she'll eat anything. Including kitten? Sara is tensed, but intense with a fixated quiet look. I sat next to her but she didn't respond to me nor looked at me, when i tried to block her sight she just went out of her way to keep her look fixated on the little Clochard who was sniffing about next to Nino on the couch... And i have to work as well. AARRGGHH. And every shelter and kitten host family organization i called was on emergency stop. Tis the season to be... not so jolly, because a whole lot of stray or wild kittens are born and found... So now this is kind of a tricky situation. So hope for and with me that i'll find a place for these cute ones :-) Preferably before i'm popping tranquillizers.... Nigey has a bird!! What's his name? ps, Angel, notice what shade of blue my T-shirt is?

Hey g, your most recent (at the time) mizar6 post inspired me to blog a minor cross-pond coincidence. Ah, the aging Steely Dan fan base, eh?...
Just putting the pic here for laughs and/or jeers. My usual excess of pointless details on the blog if anyone cares. I don't know about facebook. Never looked into it much. Did MySpace just to see what all the fuss was about at the time, but don't do much with it anymore beyond the occasional perhaps once a week check to see what might be goin' on with it. Seems to me the two sites oughtta merge and become FaceSpace. It'd just be a catchier, more memorable name. Oh well, it'll be a project for another day if I ever decide to give fb a go.

Oh well, humor is a very subjective thing. Apparently the comment on mouseover may not work with all browsers. xkcd comics always have that feature though and sometimes it's even a large part of the humor. Whether it is in this case or not, I can't tell so I'll just give it to you here now...
"But if you unplug everything, it gets so quiet you hear that high-pitched empty-room hum. And then the whispers begin." The humor of the comic itself is of course that someone on the other end of an IM conversation (or something similar) says s/he's going to spend a weekend at home without the internet and within the hour is on there already saying that the experience is not so bad after all before realizing, "Ooops, I'm on the internet!" Maybe it's not really all that funny, but it struck me as such at the time especially with the commented tagline as above. On the "about" page for the comic, there's this particular Q&A: Why can't I read the whole comic mouseover text in Firefox? They can be read with extensions like Long Titles, or by right-clicking on the images and going to 'properties', then clicking and dragging to read the whole thing. This is a bug in Firefox, Mozilla Bug #45375. It has been outstanding for many years now. Note: It looks like it's been fixed in Firefox 3.0.

FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE FILM "WATCHMEN"
Janet Black: Doctor Manhattan as you know the Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clock face analogizing humankind's proximity to extinction, midnight representing the threat of nuclear war. As of now it stands at four minutes to midnight. Would you agree that we are that close to annihilation? Jon Osterman: My father was a watch maker. He abandoned it when Einstein discovered time is relative. I would only agree that a symbolic clock is as nourishing to the intellect as is a photograph of oxygen to a drowning man. Adrian Veidt: It doesn't take a genius to see the world has problems. Edward Blake: No, but it takes a room full of morons to think they're small enough for you to handle. Dan Dreiberg: What happened to us? What happened to the American Dream? Edward Blake: "What happened to the American Dream?" It came true! You're lookin' at it. Rohrschach: Never compromise. Not even in the face of Armageddon. That's always been the difference between us, Dan. Rorschach: You see, Doctor, God didn't kill that little girl. Fate didn't butcher her and destiny didn't feed her to those dogs. If God saw what any of us did that night he didn't seem to mind. From then on I knew. God doesn't make the world this way. We do. Rorschach: None of you understand. I'm not locked up in here with you. You're locked up in here with me. Jon Osterman: I have walked on the surface of the Sun, witnessed events so tiny and so fast, that they can hardly be said to have occurred at all. But you, Adrian, you're just a man. The world's smartest man poses no more threat to me than does its smartest termite. Jon Osterman: I'm disappointed in you, Adrian! Very disappointed! Re-assembling myself was the first trick I learned as Dr Manhattan! Jon Osterman: A living body and a dead body have the same number of particles. Structurally there's no difference. Edward Blake: Once you realize what a joke everything is, being the Comedian is the only thing that makes sense.

Just so as you know, I'm not saying anybody's wrong or right, I just find the general concept fascinating on some level no matter who's ultimately right. |
Magpies (which are in the same bird family as crows and ravens) have been repeatedly observed holding "wakes" when a member of their flock is killed. As many as 20 or 30 individuals gather around the body and vocalize for a considerable length of time. I myself once saw a touching sight -- driving through the Eastern Sierra in California, I saw an 18-wheeler parked at the side of the road. The driver was standing there, looking down at the body of a crow he had somehow run into, or that had run into his truck. Beside it, another crow, no doubt its mate, was squawking so loudly I could hear it through closed windows, and moving back and forth with considerable agitation. Who says humans are the only animals that grieve?

cool! Well deserved...
Gabriel shares Polar Music Prize about pets... for sure they grieve. Funny this comes up because a friend of mine just saw a crow get hit by a car, and the two crows it was with were going nuts about their friend who was in bad shape. Their reaction affected her more than the plight of the hurt crow. I know they're not pets but still... And I just read a touching story about how a young child was killed in a terrible accident. This was long ago when they would display the body at home for a few days for people to come and pay their respects. Afterwards, the family dog laid for 3 days in the spot where the coffin had been, without eating or drinking, until it passed away too. And I've personally seen pets effected by loss of owners and pet friends. Hard to think of this as news, really... if animals are capable of so much joy (i.e. a dog playing), it seems natural their emotional range would extend just as far in the other direction. Wait until they find out plants mourn too... lol! :-) But to balance this post out emotionally :-) animals and plants

I know my Amazon parrot suffers from severe separation anxiety and can even anticipate the possibility that I might be leaving. For instance, if she sees me putting away clothing in the bedroom where her cage is, she gets agitated; I think her previous owner went away on lots of business trips, so when she sees me folding clothes she assumes I'm packing to leave. She understands the meaning of the action and starts being worried about it. So why couldn't she grieve if a member of our "flock" were to pass away?

oooh, not much time now but can not resist. yes i am more than positive that pets can feel loss as well. if their owner goes shopping or if a child moves out... if a companion dies... our grrls sulk if one of us has to go out. at first they cried as if someone was hurting them, Sascha did this... and then they just lay still, with sad eyes... and then very much alive and happy again if they hear the car or the key in the door...

|
I just found this article interesting...
Do pets grieve? It's easy (and often fun) to anthropomorphize pets, but we just can't know. Maybe it's even a little bit of each of the potential explanations given. I think it's almost as hard to understand and relate to people (despite language). We're each of us trapped in our own brains/bodies. Two of us may suffer the same malady, but does one feel it worse than the other? Both sprain an ankle, but one complains more about the pain... Which one is suffering more? The one grimacing the most or speaking of it the most? Maybe. But not necessarily. When someone gives orders and asks the underling if he understands, the underling says yes. Now, did he truly understand? He may have just thought he understood. Understand...? Not really relevant to anything, I know, but just the sort of thing(s) I sometimes wonder about.

Why?
Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are almost dead? Why do banks charge a fee on 'insufficient funds' when they already know there is not enough money? Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars; but have to check when you say the paint is still wet? Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard? Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a revolver at him? Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets? Whose idea was it to put an 'S' in the word 'lisp'? If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes? Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use the bubbles are always white? Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale? Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized? Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance? Why is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on your first try? How do those dead bugs get into those enclosed light fixtures? When we are in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle with a shopping cart then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, 'It's all right'? Well, it isn't all right, so why don't we say, 'That really hurt. Why don't you watch where you're going?' Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over? In winter why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat? How come you never hear father-in-law jokes? The statistics on sanity is that one out of every four persons is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Think of your three best friends -- if they're okay, then it's you.

Arcelor-Mittal Steel Works, Inc. feeling it's time for a Shakeup, hires a new CEO. The new boss is determined to rid the company of every slacker.
On a tour of the facilities, the CEO sees a guy leaning on a wall. The room is full of workers and he wants to let them know that he means business. He walks up to the guy leaning against the wall and asks, "How much money do you make a week? A little surprised, the young man replies, "About $400 a week. Why?" The CEO then hands the guy $1,600 in cash and screams, "Here's four weeks' pay, now GET OUT and don't come back." Feeling pretty good about himself, the CEO looks around the room and asks, "Who can tell me what that goof-ball did here?" From across the room comes a voice, "Pizza delivery Guy from Domino's."

Thanks for jogging what's left of my memory, DimSkip. Maybe I should just request "Brooklyn" and leave the entire-album concept alone. :)
