WHAT A SHADE ABOUT "A" Wetside Story?

Wow, when I think of all the time we spent trying to figure these damn lyrics out...could this be the real thing?

Wetside Story (or: A Walk on the Wetside)

Count Mickey gets hungry
A bit wrangler’s got to take a break some time
He’s got to feed the machine

Steamer Heaven is empty
Just a couple of kids and behind the counter
The lovely Janine
As soon as he walks in the door she’s smilin'
He covers his eyes with his hands cause:

Everyone knows that it’s scary out there
When you jump to the Wetside
Where it’s cold or it’s loud
Or it’s screaming with light
Where it’s way complex
Hacking through all the harsh FX

Our man goes for the bomber
One of those wax-looking angel food wheelies
With stuff on the top

She gave him back a quarter
Her hand touches his - you could feel the flames arcing
All over the shop
For a moment they spun on the edge of history
And fell into animal time

Everyone knows that it’s scary out there
When you jump to the Wetside
Where it’s cold or it’s loud
Or it’s screaming with light
Where it’s way complex
Hacking through all the harsh FX

BRIDGE:

Back out on the tarmac
The night’s alive with the sweetness of summer
You know this Steamer’s all right
I almost remember
Something kinda cool but it’s already fading
Back to straight black & white
Maybe he needed a hit of downtime
Then he covers his eyes with his hands cause:

Everyone knows that it’s scary out there
When you jump to the Wetside
Where it’s cold or it’s loud
Or it’s screaming with light
Where it’s way complex
Hacking through all the harsh FX

Mitt Romney coming with Trump backing, really? Like Newt, I'd wait until April in Texas just to make sure.
Really, only in America is the democratic process so drawn out and complex. That has not changed since Tocqueville visited in the eighteenth century. But since the media is much more massive nowadays campaigning has to be the most grueling of experience. These months turning into years of debating, often times in vain for most candidates, certainly strikes the outsider as bizarre or at the very least as a somewhat anachronistic ritual for the masses.
Other than that... three dots.

I of course carefully chiseled out an Itunes playlist to the geniuses' glee. There's something to be said about canadian pop in the eighties. Here's an example of when stiff competition rose the cream to the top of the pops, with everyone trying to outwit each other up the charts in a way, so they could live off their craft. Those were the golden days of FM radio.

I'm so full of uplifiting stories like these with no time to express or even take them in, really...
And I have a cold with high fever. Shook hands with lawyers and social workers early morning, generous on the underhanded swipes of evil pepper spray. Oh, it got viral in court, yesterday... I even shot the deputy in self-defense.
Sometimes along the way, braving the cold fronts, I hit a pocket of evenfulness, like most anyone (but one of my brothers). World's a playgrund, have fun, leave a little packet behind.

Im telling you this Itunes makes me long for the days of what was it, that Napster thing. Thee selections made available through it and the sound quality of the files could be much better. And rare thing in the illicit world that was, there are broken downloads here with no repair in sight. I got half a Hard UP Case and a taste of junkie girl instead of the full tracks. Not sure this type of butchery is not disrespectful of the artifact and/or its artists/proponents but it can't be very cool.
I would have paid for Napster library access... so vast and full of tasty rarities... it was wonderful over ten years ago. ugh

i was driving one day, and then i saw these flashes of light in the sky. there was no rain. no thunder. no storm. just one of those indian summer days. i looked around to see if anyone else perhaps had noticed it and would be thrown off. i did not imagine.

WHAT A SHADE ABOUT ps

strike that. she is canadian. israeli. all kinds of.

Sophie Milman is a charismatic young Russian-born, Israeli-raised, Toronto-based jazz vocalist who's well on her way to becoming an international sensation. Still in her twenties, she's been a household name in Canada since 2004, when her debut album established her as a major artist in her adopted home country. Since then, she's continued to take the jazz world by storm, topping the Billboard j...azz and iTunes charts Canada, the U.S., France and Japan, winning a Juno Award, and captivating audiences worldwide.

In the Moonlight, Milman's fourth album, finds the artist creating her most sophisticated and accomplished work to date, drawing upon her sublime interpretive skills and unique personal history to deliver a deeply compelling set of jazz and pop standards that showcases the subtle emotional shadings of her singing.

Throughout In the Moonlight, Milman's performances elevate a musically and lyrically diverse array of material, encompassing the playful romanticism of the George Gershwin/Buddy DeSylva chestnut "Do It Again," the poignant melancholy of the Kurt Weill classic "Speak Low," the barbed bittersweetness of Serge Gainsbourg's "Ces Petits Riens," the effortless uplift of the Antonio Carlos Jobim/Jon Hendricks bossa nova favorite "No More Blues" and the understated elegance of the beloved Duke Ellington classics "Prelude to A Kiss" and "Day Dream."

"I wanted to make a lush, warm, romantic record, the kind of record that takes people to an emotional place," Milman asserts, adding, "I choose songs mostly based on the lyrics; they have to resonate with me emotionally or have something cheeky about them to get my attention. But I'm also drawn to melodies that have interesting twists and turns."

In the Moonlight matches Milman with a stellar set of musicians whose talent and sensitivity complement her own, resulting in performances that consistently cut to the emotional truth of each song. Recording in New York for the first time and working with Grammy-nominated producer Matt Pierson, she's accompanied by a prestigious musical cast that includes pianists Gerald Clayton and Kevin Hays, guitarists Julian Lage and Romero Lubambo, bassist Larry Grenadier, drummer Lewis Nash, percussionist Bashiri Johnson and renowned soloists Randy Brecker (flugelhorn), Chris Potter (tenor saxophone) and Gregoire Maret (harmonica), with key contributions from noted arrangers Alan Broadbent, Gil Goldstein and Rob Mounsey.

"It was good to take myself out of my comfort zone and throw myself into the New York atmosphere, with musicians I had never worked with before," Sophie recalls. "That really put me on edge, and I think it resulted in better music. I was nervous, but I was really proud of how I was able to hold my ground and do my thing. The whole experience turned out to be amazingly gratifying. It was fun and scary, which can be a good combination."

Six of In the Moonlight's tracks feature vivid orchestral arrangements that accentuate the expressiveness of Milman's vocals. "Recording with strings for the first time was a real trip," she notes. "It was like putting on my headphones and being hugged by a big, warm blanket. Those were the most elaborate arrangements I'd ever performed, whereas the rest of the session was much more spontaneous and groovy. It’s a really interesting contrast."

The intimacy and immediacy of Sophie Milman's singing reflects the dramatic experiences that shaped her early life. Born in Russia's Ural Mountains, she left for Israel with her parents in an effort to escape the strictures and uncertainties of life under communism. Among the few possessions that her family managed to hold onto was a cherished collection of vinyl jazz bootlegs. Those recordings would become the foundation for Sophie's lifelong love of jazz.

"Russia was pretty closed, and there wasn't a huge taste for jazz there—certainly not American jazz—during communism," she explains. "But my dad accumulated a decent collection of records, which he picked up on the black market—that was his form of rebellion against the regime. That collection really shaped my early musical consciousness. I came to jazz from a completely different perspective. When I was growing up, the music in Russia was quite heavy; even kids' songs there were tinged with sadness and marked by real life. So, when I first heard jazz, I was immediately drawn to it, even though I was a kid and it was supposedly grown-up music. Maybe I had a certain level of emotional maturity that helped me understand it. For whatever reason, it really spoke to me."

Spending her formative years in Israel, Milman continued to gravitate towards jazz and other American music forms, developing a deep affinity for such seminal artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong. When she was 16, her family emigrated again, to Toronto, where she quickly became a part of that city's rich, diverse music scene. She began her musical career almost by accident, after being asked to participate in a local jazz series. Her talents quickly won her local notoriety, and it wasn't long before she had earned a record deal with Linus Entertainment, an independent Canadian label.

Although she was barely into her 20s when it was released, Sophie's self-titled 2004 debut album became a major hit in Canada, establishing her as a rising star and an in-demand live act. Her 2007 sophomore album Make Someone Happy debuted at #1 on Billboard’ Canadian jazz chart and peaked at #3 on Billboard’s U.S. jazz chart, and won a Juno Award as Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. 2009's Take Love Easy also debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Canadian jazz chart and reached #4 in the U.S. The live EP release Live at The Winter Garden Theatre and the 2008 DVD Live In Montreal further enhanced Milman’s international reputation.

Milman's recording success led to performances at such prestigious venues as the Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center, the Montreal Jazz Festival, Toronto's Massey Hall and the legendary Blue Note clubs in New York and Japan. She's also shared stages and/or collaborated with a varied array of musicians from the jazz, pop and rock worlds, including Randy Bachman, Chris Botti, Gary Burton, Chick Corea, the Manhattan Transfer, Cesaria Evora, Jesse Cook and the Neville Brothers.

Many of the songs on In the Moonlight carry particular significance for Milman. "'Till There Was You,' to me, is the ultimate simple romance song," she says, adding, "I grew up listening to the Beatles' version of it, and I learned how to sing it when I was seven. It was one of my dad's favorite songs. In Israel, we had a beat-up old car without a radio, so when we drove around the country, I was the entertainment. I would sit in the back seat and take requests, and 'Till There Was You' was on heavy rotation. My dad just loved it. Everybody was trying to talk me out of recording it; they thought it was corny. But I dug in my heels, because the song represents the deep connection between my dad and me. It reminds me of times when my family was poor, life was hard and music was the glue that kept us together. That's when my musical identity was formed, so that song is really part of me.

"I wanted to make a romantic album, but I didn't want to make a rosy, 'everything's always great' kind of record," she continues. "After 'Till There Was You, ' the other side of the coin is 'Ces Petits Riens,' which is about loss that is so monumental that you try to belittle it in your mind because it's so painful. I can relate that to the starts and stops that I've had in my life, and to the kind of nostalgia that I feel towards the people and things that I've had to leave behind.

"My life's been full of detours, but they've led me to a good place," concludes Milman, who recently revisited her old haunts in Russia and Israel, and recently earned gold medal in commerce from the University of Toronto. "As disjointed as my life feels sometimes, I think I've been able to take the best qualities of the three distinct, amazing countries where I've lived and integrate them into my personality.

"Moving around the world twice, starting from scratch each time and having to reinvent and reimagine myself in a completely new context and culture—that's the defining feature of my life. It's certainly shaped me as a person, and it continues to color my approach to music, informing the kind of songs that I choose to sing and the way I sing them."

WHAT A SHADE ABOUT sNowbound, apparently

DS -- There was a video for DF's "Snowbound", which was actually a good piece of cinema, sort of Fritz Lang-by-way-of-Russian agitprop :). I seem to recall there was a video for "IGY" as well, although it wasn't widely distributed. Fagen also was involved in supplying the music for some late '80s short films, which were short enough to be considered music videos even if they weren't shown on MTV. As you probably know, he wrote about cinema and the arts for Premiere magazine in the '80s, and had interesting thoughts about film music and the way film, drama, and music interacted. I think he was probably interested in the music-film genre, but gave up on it when he saw what a joke MTV turned it all into.

At least Steely Dan had the good sense to precede the music video craze and then went on a 20 year break until well after it had passed.

DF would probably rather forget the solo stuff. I'm not an expert on that era... How many official DF vids were there? ...Only 1 or 2, maybe 3? I seem to vaguely recall one for "Tomorrow's Girls", but even that shallow recollection is really only thanks to our modern age of online digitalia.

If you meant my dad's age, yes, you wish you'll live that long and witness four generations like this.
And I hope one day to have a shot of me looking genuinely happy like this. That has never happened.
If you mean this era, then I wish I could say this apparent cultural vacuum is transitional and we are soon to witness the next thing, a world of compelling contents like it's 1973 all over again, with
three or four classics a month being thrown at you.
But for the life of me, i don't see it.

it's the modern world for ya and i agree, a lot of all that makes one go nostalgic before our due time to be so, but then again, as a wee child i liked the olden times music even better than what my friends listened to... and when i tried to turn them onto Steely Dan not many if any begot as enthusiastic.

i still think that those who invented the things that really changed the way people look at life are far more inventor royalty than mr Jobs, still, his creations did bring comfort and changed certain industries, and as an apple user who am i to criticize... but there's more to life than what we can enter via our computers. although then again i would never have been able to get to know you lot lol. which would have been a serious loss also. a void.

a lot of things belgian sound scrumptuous, like. lol

It's a gun shaped like a flying saucer from the fifties(!). And the thing is still there. I was unaware Mizar five took part in world war two. The footage left of that battle rivals with the best of sci-fi, like nazis invading these invisible alien settlers in the belgian countryside.

Trouble is, I don't really like the idea of cells. But it's a job.

Steve Jobs lived long enough to take us into this new culture that, while it is fabulous and all, tends to lead me to get bored and consequently running nostalgic.

Sadly, there are still quite a few folks here on LI without power. LIPA really should be held accountable, sez I. Our roommate heard from a neighbor that the main reason we went so long without electricity was because a guy who lived near our substation tried to remove a fallem tree from power lines over his house and made a botch of it, and when the LIPA truck eventually showed up to make repairs, the tech was so annoyed at this fellow's "illegal action" that he had a fit, got back in his truck, and drove away, leaving the whole area powerless for another three days. Great behavior in a time of crisis, eh?

Thanks for the good wishes. It's great to be back! :)

Finally am back in the world of communication. As in the case of DimSkip, the actual hurricane wasn't anywhere near as bad as forecast -- basically it was just trees down, power lines cut -- but we had no electricity from 5 AM Sunday to 8 PM last night. Also like DS, the power company (LIPA) seemed to be more than a little remiss in their duties -- nearly every adjacent area had their power restored shortly after the storm, if they lost it at all, while we sat in darkness for nearly four days. Oh well, it's all over now. My sympathies to those who sustained more damage than we did, and thanks to youse guys for your concern. Glad all are well.

WHAT A SHADE ABOUT DimSkip

NOW I'm back! A lot of virtual catching up to do after being without power for 63h, 10m. And the only problem was a transformer had "tripped." Which means the fix literally took under a minute. I watched the guy do it and then Bam!... Power. Aggravating too because I'd called in and told the power co. exactly what the problem was, that it was just a transformer tripped and there were NO lightning strikes, NO trees or limbs down, and the transformer did not explode or anything like that. It just tripped, like a circuit breaker in your home for whatever reason. I realize the co. had a LOT to do, but they really should have had it fixed 2 days ago when it was that simple and especially once they were TOLD exactly what the problem was. But customers couldn't possibly know what they're talking about, I guess. To top it off when the guy finally got there he said the report had been that there was a tree limb down on the wires. That's B.S., pure and simple because I and one other person specifically told them that was NOT the case. And I know it's not the case because there's simply NOT a tree there!

It wasn't the worker's fault, but why is it a simple message can't get passed along correctly in this modern age of communications? Frustrating.

But anyhow I and my meighbors are fine. I was more concerned about my neighbors than myself because in one house is an 80 year old couple (as in both just turned 80 this year) and in another house is my 83 year old aunt who lives alone (though with her more immediate family right behind her in another house that didn't lose power, but she stayed in her own home regardless).

Thanks for all thoughts/concerns/whatever. All in all, Irene was not that big a deal for my immediate area. Dealing with the power co. was HELL! I try to be understanding given the circumstances and I was very tactful whenever I called them, but this outage problem for us was NOT unique to Irene. We've lost power (not often, but still) in the past for 10 hours, 14 hours, when it was just us, not widespread outages. 63h 10m is the new record. I hope never to break it.

I see B. checked in safe and sound... So I'll echo Angel... Nigey? You out there?

If we hear nothing for a while, my bet's on power outage as the culprit, but I may be a little biased in that direction right now. At least with no power that cut down on distractions that are normally readily available, leaving plenty of time to help neighbors clean up their yards of tree limb debris.

WHAT A SHADE ABOUT DimSkip

Hey all... Am fine, but been without power since 2:40 a.m. sunday morning, so about 30 hours now. No estimate when it may be back. Only 4 houses on my street without power, but I'm one of them. They're probably not rushing to get to us. Damage was limited in my area to tree limbs down, a few whole trees uprooted, and of course widespread power outages. Oh I was also without a house phone for 24 hours from 9:30 p.m. saturday night. So no internet or much communications, but plenty of outside yard cleanup to do for me and my neighbors. Now I'd kind of like power back please to get to vacuuming the (more than) usual basement seepage, but it will be manageable once I can actually get to it.

Overall, yes, it was category 1 hurricane technically, but conditions and damage were worst closer to the coast and in any usual flood prone areas, neither of which is me. And even a lot of the downed trees were, I'm sure, probably rotted or preweakened in some way anyway, just waiting for a strong wind.

And even though Irene wasn't as tough as feared (though I pretty much expected that scenario for my particular area) I wouldn't want to get a worse one either. She had actually pretty well abated by the time midnight rolled around which was when the media had said it would be hitting full force. Always glad when they're wrong on those sorts of predictions, so I won't complain. Hope to get power back today sometime, but also won't be surprised if it's another day or two either. Ta-ta...

This one goes out to Irene in N.C.

Fingers crossed, fearing the worst, hoping for the best (or minimal worst if there is such a critter), and also hoping the weather geeks are all a bunch of plain'n'simple fearmongers who get off on these things and scaring people, while spurring them to "CONSUME! CONSUME! CONSUME!" in preparation.

Hope anyone else (mainly N., I'm assuming) 'round here who may be in Irene's path stays completely safe and relatively damage free (as much as possible). I guess it's time for me to start thinking about filling the tub and buckets with water for toilet flushing in case of lengthy power outages. I got flashlights with good batteries, battery operated radio, and brought the cheap plastic porch chairs in so they don't end up blowing past Ol' Barney (the lighthouse an hour away at the Jersey shore for those who may not be aware of the ref).

And if you can spare a moment or two, especially sunday (EDT-US), to meditate (or whatever) and picture a dot in NJ about a third of the way up from Cape May (the southernmost point) and pretty much halfway between Philly and the famously swirling white sands of the Jersey shore, then visualize that dot with deflector shields raised to maximum to fend off the dreaded Irene, well... much appreciated!

I can deal with rain (lots of it), I can deal with loss of power, I just hope the winds are not anywhere near as bad as they're saying are possible. Don't like high winds in just regular storms.

In the past I actually HAVE felt minor tremors and then later had them confirmed on local news radio. In those two (I think) instances I seemed to be the only one who noticed. I think it helps to be indoors because then the houses and things in the houses will rattle and draw attention to something happening. WHAT A SHADE ABOUT what a Night...

I remember the Northridge quake...I had the flu and a fever, around 100 degrees, had finally gotten to sleep around 3 AM when the quake hit. Violent shaking...I somehow found myself on my knees beside my bed...my birds were flying around the many-windowed bedroom, screaming at the tops of their lungs...my dog and cat were cowering in corners. Out of one of the windows I saw an enormous flash of green-yellow light: an electrical transformer had exploded, but at first I thought maybe it was World War III. After determining that none of the windows had broken and all the birds were safe, I put on some clothes, took the dog, and went across the street to my neighbor Eric's house, where he was comforting two of his other neighbors and their dogs. We huddled together, listening to barely audible radio broadcasts about the quake on an ancient transistor -- the electricity was blown for the entire area -- and later, in the semi-darkness, we walked out and saw an amazing sight: during an aftershock, the entire concrete driveway turned to cream of wheat, huge ripples from one end to the other. What a night, as Fagen would say. :)

WHAT A SHADE ABOUT Stop Press: LoNg Island Rocks!

We were eating lunch in the back yard when the earthquake came. I felt it first, sort of a gentle rolling that persisted for a surprisingly long time. At first I thought the dryer in the laundry room had an unbalanced load, but the motion wasn't jerky or strong enough for that. Then our roommate stuck her head out the back door and said excitedly, "That was an earthquake!" Thrills in suburbia.

was feeling alone but not lonely but realized i am alone. spent some time at my parents who hated to see me and the dogs go back home, but a few hours is what i can manage and then i need to touch base with the other shells except for the child-of-my-parents mode. it's counting down to that day where my brother changed life for eternity and then there's always more family pressure and obligation... but had a very lovely reunion last week on Sunday, saw cousins i hadn't seen in 30 years and that was just great.

ah yes, the ß day indeed! was wondering whether the package had arrived, because i think it traveled for almost a month... sent it from Belgium... glad it did arrive after all and hope the Beckerian moods will help the telecommunication roller coaster days... and it's nice to still have you on board this Mizar6 vessel.

wish it would be easy to just hop over for a rarities show! not perse for the music, but to hang with you guys.

Tones, Dimskipped, Angel, moviNg expert... we're headed into August already, time flies.

Can't bring myself to get some work done today and since i already spent about 3 hours outside with the dogs, i think i can allow myself some time to contemplate things.

Hey all. Thanks, G, for the McFarlane link. Impressive.

I must confess that I traditionally have something of a bias against really young artists, especially when it comes to songs that call for a more mature presence to lend substance to the style. However, that's my own issue. Still, as you way... wow. I hope he continues to develop and doesn't get pigeonholed as yet another extremely young potential star blazing out early.

Sorry it's taken so long to get back, but I've been very busy and it was hard to find the time to check out the vid, but I'm glad I did, glad you pointed it out.

Hey Tones! Good to see you 'round.

Ange... Glad you enjoyed the Dan show. Sorry you missed The Bear. It appears at this point that it may pop in and out of the set list. I still have no plans to attend a show this tour, but The Bear and Your Gold Teeth almost sorta makes me consider it. My guess is there's no chance of The Bear in the Borgata set list (for a casino crowd), but maybe at one of the (Philly) Tower shows, but then the trouble would be figuring out which one. But I'm pretty sure I'll content myself with somehow finding a way to just watch the youtubes as they may be presented.

Much love your way. Will be in South San Francisco for a day next week, but I will have another in the car, so I can't do Steely Stuff. Gonna miss you and beautiful Marin. Sob...

Hi everyone... haven't even lurked in a while, but somehow I sensed Gina's call to harass NYBill... lol! What, are we going to TP his house? Not even sure what he did this time, but I'm in! :-)

I did a quick scan to see what I've missed, Great to see/read you all (missed you ß) again. And hey, was that the original Dandom Slut ™ way back there? wow... sorry I missed her...

So I broke my foot back in January, and recovery seems to be taking forever. I'm finally back to work, but it doesn't look like I'm going to make any of the Dan shows this summer. I did get treated to a Peter Gabriel concert a few weeks ago. He's touring with a small orchestra, and they're doing this cool thing: at each stop in the tour they fill out the other half of the orchestra with local musicians, giving them the experience (and pay) of working with PG. Way cool. It was a great show... I've never heard PG sing better. He was in outstanding voice. Plus we got upgraded to 'handicapped" seating because of my foot. Sweet!

'k... got to hop to work. Hope everyone is well... G, ange, Dim, ß, N, whoever else I've missed...

OK. Clas and i will be sending our NYB a postcard each. nothing mean, just a simple greetings from Sweden and Belgium, and i will add "have you listened to anything Steely Dan lately?"

NYB has misbehaved badly and didn't reckon with the fact that his twisted sense of humor might not be so humorous to other people. Making threats is not funny. So he was exposed, vanished from FB for a while but has returned, heavily trimmed down his friends list and even St. Al got removed from the list. You can strum the guitar with your mouse pointer or you can press keys.

Each row on the keyboard plays the scale if you hit the keys in sequence from left to right. So letters don't correspond to traditional notes.

Can only record up to 30 seconds according to ABCnews...

Still neat, though, imo...

I also noticed that in IE the strings remain B&W, but in Mozilla FF they're colorized. No biggie, just something I noticed is all...

It's in tribute to Les Paul's 96th birthday and lets you not only strum the guitar strings, but also do a quickie recording of your musical attempt just by clicking the black "record" box (the red light toggles on/off).

Let's see if my little quickie recording works here (though I suspect it won't).

P.S. Actually it DOES work... by taking you to the google page and playing the recorded bit automatically. Neat!
