Thanks so much for stopping by my guestbook! This is a place where you can just let me know you've been by, or post comments or questions about The Dante Club and The Poe Shadow. I really appreciate your support. This is a new guestbook since the other three filled up - but you can still see them by clicking on the "view past messages" buttons at the bottom of the page.
(Please note, this is NOT a place for general discussions about Dante or Poe. For that, please go to the Dante Discussion Forum or the Poe Discussion Forum. Thanks for coming!) |

Great book. I started reading the Inferno when I was in highschool, because I knew that it would not be a part of my curriculum. I got busy and it took me 5 years to finish it over the summers. My ambition has always been to learn
Italian so I can read it in its original - this book reinforced my desire to accomplish my goal. |

The mark of a truly great book is one that inspires and lures readers to delve into other works of literature. It is obvious from your many e-mails that you have done so. Congratulations!!
I've yet to read your book, but I am looking forward to the day I can pick it up and enjoy it as so many others have done.
I wonder if some of my past students have read the book. How interesting it would be to discuss their take on it. |

Ciao a tutti,
Complimenti a Pearl, ottimo libro, direi delizioso...
ciao a tutti

In our book club, we read "The Dante Club" this past month, and after our discussion, started casting the main characters in the book.
Mrs. Healey - Susan Sarandon
Nicholas Rey - Shawn Wayans or Denzel Washington; Vin Diesel
Longfellow - Anthony Hopkins
Lowell - Chris Walkin
Fields - Liam Neeson
Sherlock Holmes - Sam Neill
Augustus Manning - Jeff Goldblum
[removed -- ed., sorry can't give away murderer's identity!]
Congratulations Matthew Pearl! Plug away at that second novel but don't rush it. |

This is a fantasticly clever book. I haven't read something with such rapt attention in quite a while. It has also taught me I should never play poker since I turned a few people on to the book after they say the look of horror and disgust on my face while reading one of the murder scenes. Very nicely done. |

Thanks for writing such an all consuming novel. I have a 6 month old and a 3 year old and rather value the little time I have to sleep. Your book however stole me away from my rest. I was captive and stayed up to all hours reading. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next! I love reading of that time period, and each of your heros was quite precious. I felt you captured their personalities and spirit beautifully. I hope to hear of another one of your books out soon!
[PS May I suggest that you not give away the murderer through your website. I was rather anxious to find out about the characters of your book and was only half way through reading when I entered the website. I came across the identity of the murderer in one of the comments made by a reader when she suggested [sorry! we'll be more careful-- ed.... ]Anyway, it's just a thought.] |

My congratulations for this books - splendid work - a bit slow at the beginning but after 50 pages I just could not stop reading it. Absolutely engrossing.
I can speak some Italian but not enough to read the Commedia in old Tuscan of course : but you did give me the oomph to get to read the Commedia (in French I must admit); just bought it today; Many thanks for that as your book seems to evidence you deeply like Dante's work
When will you publish your next work ?

Just finished The Dante Club and found it an impressive work, not only for my love of Dante, but for the incorporation of the historical period. It takes a special and unique talent to be able to interpret a 13th/14th century author within the context of 19th century literary club and make it appealing to a 21st century audience. Thank you for an excellent read. |

I bought your book during my holidays when I visited Poland. As I saw the title "The Dante Club" I decided to spend the rest of my money on this book and I honestly can say I don't regret it. It is great! I read Dante and now I'm even starting an Italian course to be able to read the "Inferno" in the original language (maybe in a few years?).
It is the best book I read for a long time! Please be sure: As soon as you write another book, I'll go and buy it at once ;)
Keep it up!

I know I am going to be repetitive, but this is a truly great book! Matthew Pearl is a genius and this novel is one of the best I have ever read (and I read a lot!). I am an Italian native speaker and of course familiar with the Divina Commedia. The excerpts from the original, such as the inscription on the gate of Hell ("Per me si va nella citta' dolente, per me si va nell'etterno dolore...") added flavour to the story and brought such a wave of memories. I was also intrigued by the details of life in Boston after the Civil War. Now I want to know more about Longfellow, Holmes and Lowell! Thank you for writing "The Dante Club"! That is all I can say! |

I've read the novel twice, and I have enjoyed it. I'm re-reading Dante, too, in the Italian, with the help of the Dorothy L Sayers and Henry W Longfellow translations. Not just the Inferno, though.
I live in Britain. I think we know a lot less about 19th century New England writers than you do. Also, we know less about the geography of Boston and Cambridge. I'm confused about this. A map would have been useful.
The published Longfellow translation differs in small details from the quotations in the novel. |

A fantastic debut novel. I loved it so much that I haven't been able to start another book for a month now, as I can't get it out of my head. There are many classics that I know I should read but may never get around to and this was a wonderful crash course in the Divine Comedy. Matthew Pearl, you are the best literary professor I've ever had, thank you. I also enjoyed learning about the Dante club members, I fell in love with them. They reminded me a lot of my grandfather who graduated summa cum laude from Harvard...a brilliant and comical man with a "unique" sense of style, turning 95 on monday. Anyway, you have a gift with words and I'll be looking forward to reading/learning more from you. |

1) Mr. Pearl you combined history and fiction together extremely well in this book. Not only does this book capture a sense of time and place but it is also especially interesting. Although you have done a very good job of keeping the book entertaining, the book starts out exceedingly slowly. It gets awfully boring in the beginning while you are developing the characters. But once you developed the characters the book got extremely interesting. Your description of all the murders and the way in which they were committed is commendable.

This was one of the most satisfying books I have read in a long time. Truly incredible depictions, characterizations, and portrayals all in one great, suspense-filled novel. Who would have ever had guessed "Lucifer" or the man who killed him? I love how the great poets of the 19th century were portrayed and the references to their works. It makes me a poem-enthusiast of the great Longfellow. |

A really amazing work of art! Historical fiction at its finest, without seeming really like it was fiction, at all. It reintroduced me to Dante and his works. I cant wait to track down the Longfellow translation, myself, which Borders is selling now...I haven't been this excited about a novel in a long time... |

Thanks, Matthew. What a phenomenal book.
I teach Dante to my high school seniors and their response to the poetry solidifies his power over our minds and hearts to this day, just as it did for Longfellow and his gang. Looking so forward to the new 'Poe' book! All the best! |

the interweaving on history, fiction and the various lives and experiences was well done, except, in my opinion, dan teal's ware/life story. i feel it could have been interwoven on an anonymous basis throughout the whole book rather than a sort of explanatory interlude. |

I read this book during the winter, which I spent in Bulgaria. I though it was great, in fact it kept me up most nights until I finally finished reading it. I am a third year law student and am currently taking an advanced constitutional law class. I was amazed at how acurate the post civil war situation is depicted, especially the way the blacks were treated and the way black supporters felt towards all the underlying commercial motivations for the war. Overall, I'm recommending the book to everyone I know. It's one of my favorite books thus far. Thanks Mr. Pearl, please keep them coming. |

I am a reader from Turkey. I want to congrulate Matthew Pearl for that great book. But the translation into Turkish was terrible, terrible, terrible. I sent a mail to warn the publishing company (Ithaki Yayinlari / www.ithaki.com.tr) about those great mistakes.
Recently one of my friends told me that he had bought a book of Peter Straub and he had found the translation terrible. That book is also published by the same company (Ithaki Yayinlari) The translator is a different person but there are again great mistakes. I and my friend feel very uncomfortable. We will never read another book which is (or will be) published by that company. And it is not easy to advise your book to our friends.
If it means any importance for you, will you please warn that company? |

Mr. Pearl, I have been a Poe-aphile for from the moment my mother read THE RAVEN to me many years ago. Since then I have travelled to his grave, been to the house in Richmond, VA. where he stayed during his short, unhappy life. You sir have captured all that needs to be alligned in informing readers about the ongoing mystery surrounding his life and death. The feel of Baltimore in the 1840's is so realistic I felt I could look up from the book and actually see the homes, offices and side streets that decorated the landscape of early Baltimore. The texture of Paris and Clark's pursuit for the real detective that Poe based his character on was so beautifully written. Since I am a bookseller I take the time to handsell such fine literary fiction. Or is it? Thank you! |

I just wanted to say thank you for stopping in Minneapolis for your talk last night ( June 15,2006). Everybody that I talked with after the reading held the same thought " He really seemed to be glad to be here & he was more interested in what we thought." Which is a rarity in this world. For an author to place themselves on a pedastal and talk down to the audience.
Once again thank you for the hours of pure pleasure to drink in your art. |

At the time I first read Dante, The DaVinci Code was being published. While I enjoyed DVC as a thriller I enjoyed Dante's quality of writing and plot that much more. Always thought that yours should have been on the NYT Book list for a couple of years! |
