So, you are a "pearl" who is a "gift of god". I am a "pure pearl" as per my namesake. I have just begun reading The Poe Shadow and feel that I have somehow in this age of mass confusion found a kindred spirit. I am sorry only that I missed your May appearance in New York.
I would like to mention that my maternal great- grandfather was a caretaker for Poe Park in the Fordham section of the Bronx, New York which was the home of the writer Edgar Allan Poe. As you most probably are aware, it was there that Edgar Allen resided with his beloved bride, Virginia. I wondered if you ever made the trip there?
I am also massively impressed by your credentials! I find it so difficult to absorb that one who could be so sensitive to literature could also pursue a degree in "liaring" lol. (That is a line I stole from Denny of "The Mamas and Papas".)
At any rate, I should just like to say that thus far, I am enjoying your read and would welcome a chat session with yourself and any other Poephiles and I do not need my three dollars back.
Continued success to you Matthew Pearl. - Karyn
PS I am confused by the below "Private?"
Any response is welcomed.

Wow. Read your first and loved it. Half way through the second and feel the same. How do you write so coloquially (sp) to the time. It's pretty uncanny, but boy it sure bolsters the feel of how the story reads. You're a very talented writer. What's next! Mike |

Mr. Pearl. I am not much of a literary critic, as I read very few works of fiction, but having reached the thirty third chapter of the Poe Shadow you have made me a believer that fact can be meshed with fiction! Thanks for a great read so far. Can't wait to read your first novel. |

I love both of your books, but especially the Poe Shadow. It's extremely well-written, and fits VERY well with the writing of the period! It seems so strange that this book was written today, rather than in the 1850s. |

I've just finished The Poe Shadow, and I have to say this is a great book. I have liked so much the way of getting you surprised and hooked in the end of some chapters (with an unbelievable fact) and, in the beginning of the next one, making a matice to return the story to its normal evolution.
Thanks a lot for your books, keep on telling these great stories.

Mr. Pearl, I enjoyed reading "The Poe Shadow." Two years ago, I visited the Poe house/museum on 203 North Amity St. in Baltimore. Perhaps something rubbed off on me while there because I wrote a 100 line sequel to the 108 line "The Raven." I tried to email you so I could paste it in the body of the email, but that link on your website didn't work. I have only performed that poem in Winter Park, FL so far and it went over well. Incidentally, I began writing it on February 2 which is mentioned as an important Poe family anniversary in the novel "Entombed." |

Thank you for opening a whole new world! You are the first writer that has inspired me to expand my knowledge. After reading Dante's Club and The Poe Shadow, I discovered that I had a list of additional books I wanted to read. I have since read Longfellow's biography by his brother Samuel. I have purchased Dante's Inferno and the Complete works of Edgar A. Poe. I have also become interested in Nathaniel Hawthorne. All this happened from reading your wonderful books. |

Mr. Pearl,
All I can say is FINALLY! I am a lover of Russian novels, mostly by Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky, but they only wrote so many. It's been difficult to find a modern day writer that I like. Your writing is so eloquent, each sentence has meaning, yet you manage to keep the story interesting and exciting, unlike so many other books today that can only do one or the other. I too am eagerly awaiting more of your books. Can't wait to read Poe Shadow (waiting for paperback), I keep checking! I also think its a great idea that you're pulling in real historical writers that seem but an idea to people nowadays. You breathe a second life back into them! Keep up the good work! Please write more! |

Thirty years ago, I was part of a small but faithful Dante club that met weekly in a dingy apartment on the "back side" of Beacon Hill... a mix of professionals, grad students, working class folks, and a disbaled senior citizen. Over the course of a couple of years, we slowly worked through Dorothy Sayer's translation of the Commedia, canto by canto, over many bottles of red wine.
Your book brought back so many fond memories of our old club in Boston, I'm now inspired to gather a new group, perhaps using Longfellow's work!
I was delighted with how you unfolded the mystery and your lively depictions of Holmes and Lowell. I was also taken by Nicholas Rey's intelligence, persistence, and strength of character.
Great work! |

Thank you for giving me something I never thought I would see in my lifetime, the discovery of a brilliant author at the beginning of his career and the pleasure of the anticipation of his next novel. I often wondered what it would be like living in the time of Poe, Doyle, Christy and stumbling upon their first publications. At first there would be a feeling of pleasant surprise. After the second work, the realization that you were witnessing the evolution of a unique literary mind. And finally, the frustration of waiting for the next to appear, only to be assuaged by rereading the palry volume of the material already at hand. I can say that I have never felt this way about any author whose career began during my lifetime, until now. It's the fusion of a unique classical literary style, mystery, and bold romantic personalities. It's the return of looking at characters with a telescopic world view as opposed to a microscopic psychological view.
For those of you who may be reading this website before having read the author, I give you a fine example from page 269 of The Poe Shadow:
"Her eyes caught mine with uncomfortable intensity. I could not help my thoughts: with Hattie to marry Peter, what hopes of love had I left? For the strength it would give me-what wouldn't I give at the moment for even a token of affection! Perhaps my thoughts were obvious, as she now began to move closer to me. I looked away to break any improper insinuation. But she placed her hand on my shoulder, and as I looked back she pulled my face between the bars to hers, in a long moment that trilled me more by its surprise than in the warmth of her mouth. The scar that I had seen on her lips seemed to form an indent in the same place on my own face, and the currents ran through my chilled body. I was remade..."
Whew! Can't wait for the next novel! |

The reviews say it all; The Dante Club is that rare gem that one only comes across once in a great while. Recommended to me by my 19-year-old son, it will remain permanently in my book collection. It is all the more enjoyable for me since I am a native of the area where the story takes place. I pass some of the places cited in the story on my drive in to Boston every day and, now that I know some of the history (thanks to your book), view them with a new appreciation. I am also a huge fan of New England's 19th century writers and poets. Do you plan on sticking with this format for a while? Surely Hawthorne would be a worthy subject? Whatever you produce next will, I have no doubt, be great. Congratulations on a superb achievement. I am looking forward to reading The Poe Shadow. |

I happened to find your books at the library and what a find! I so enjoy the language you use, the historical background, the intrigue, the details. It is so rare today to find books in which it is possible to actually savor the words and stories that linger in your mind like a rare fragrance in your nose. I finished reading the Poe shadow a couple of weeks back but only started another book a couple of days ago. Rarely am I so reluctant to move on to something else, "floating" in the book's atmosphere brought me so much happiness.
So, thank you for your beautiful writing,I can't wait to explore another of your books. |

I just finished "The Dante Club" and have "The Poe Shadow" waiting for me at home. I love historical mysteries. There have been many in recent year - some outstanding (Ex. "The Alienist") others, not quite up to par. "The Dante Club" belongs with the former - an intriguing and exciting literary read that definitely will propel me to re-read the Dante works I had studied back in High School/College. |

I picked up your book (The Dante Club) in the half-priced, previously red bin at the Louisville Airport. I had no knowledge of what it was about but it looked different from the other books in the bin. I'm so very glad I bought it! I was skeptical at first and a little intimidated, but I persisted and somewhere around the middle of the first Canticle, I was hooked. I can't imagine the amount of research that went into this book. I truly felt like I was reading a novel written in the 1860s! I'm looking forward to reading the Poe book, and I hope you find time to write many others. |

Brilliant writing. I'd love to see what you could do with Chaucer! I never thought I'd find a novel that I enjoyed as much as "The Club Dumas", but thanks to you, I have found two novels that have met and surpassed my expectations. Your contributions to the literary world are exceptional. |

I've taught American lit to high schoolers for many years, but I always seem to give short shrift to the Fireside Poets. I finished The Dante Club this morning and immediately went to some textbooks to read more about Longfellow, Lowell, and Holmes. Thanks for broadening my horizons while carrying me along on a great literary ride. Looking forward to The Poe Shadow. |

I was depressed after reading The Dante Club because, well, I was finished! What a conundrum; wanting to slowly savor a book yet compulsively reading on into the morning. It is sort of odd that I stumbled onto it after reading The Tenth Circle. |

I went to our local library (Monroe Township, NJ) and saw a posting regarding a reading group run by the Director of the library. I've never heard of you or your books but decided I would take it out and go to the discussion. Well, there weren't any copies available so I put my name on the list to be advised when one is returned.
It doesn't appear to be my kind of book. However, I'm always open to new experiences and this will be one for me. The discussion isn't until Feb. 22nd at 7:30 p.m. I'll write at that time and let you know if I enjoyed it or not. |

I just finished The Poe Shadow and I loved it! Thank you for writting a wonderful book about a great man. I have read Poe since I was seven years old and have been interested in him ever since. It was about time a book was done about him that really shines on his life and continues the mystery we have all learned to love.
You are a fun author to read and I look forward to seeing what you do next. |

THE DANTE CLUB- What a marvelous experience. The book was recommended for my book club and when I first read the back cover, I groaned about reading another "ersatz" history come Da Vinci Code.
To my wonderment and pleasant surprise, I absolutely loved it. I now feel compelled to re-visit Dante's Inferno and all the works of the great 19th century American poets. Of course, The Poe Shadow is first on the list. Kudos to a great author and a great book.

The Poe Shadow's masterly writing stays long, becomes a shadow for the reader, meaning that the book has substance. I wait for the third book, imagining the growth, since, for me, the growth from The Dante Club to The Poe Shadow was that from a forward in basketball to a power forward with the skills top shooter. Have been search for commentary on Emerson's translation of V.N. and found myself on your website again--which I thank you for put thelost chapter on Emerson and V.N. on the site. |

hi
im reading the poe shadow at the moment and am really enjoying it...its getting quite addictive! i rarely read modern novels preferring the classics myself but this book has changed my perspective significantly.
one other thing...im confused by other comments on the message board referring to the authenticity of the language used throughout the book in relation to the historical context.i personally feel that the language is rather modern and therefore provides a very interesting antithesis which works really well (with reference to the narrative, and not the discourse between characters).
i just wondered what your intention was at the time of writing-was it to replicate the language of the time or to just stick with the current version of english? |

This is just a fantastic book - the dialogue between the characters seems to ring so true and I felt I was actually in 19th-century Boston. It is a real page-turner - if only teh book had been published before I visited the city. What's more, it has spurred my interest in Longfellow, and I particularly enjoyed a virtual tour of Longfellow's house, and explorations of Annie Allegra, who was an intriguing character! Thank you for such an entertaining read. I look forward to reading your other books |

Saludos. |

Great! I grabbed Japanese translated versions of your "The Dante Club", which were laid out flat at a booksore in a station for my vacation book. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. I really really enjoyed it and now, I'm thinking of reading the "Divina Commedia", translated into Japanese. I'll get original English version of it and read it though the translation was execellent for us! And, Mr. Pearl, "Edgar Alan Poe" is very familiar to us. I am sure that lots of people are interested in your "The Poe Shadow".
Mr. Pearl, not that many Japanese are religious and don't have profond knowledge about Christianity, but, I am 100% sure that we will appreciate your work!

I read 'The Dante's Club' a month back, and I was not able to put it down till it was finished.
Matthew, you have done an incredible job in doing justice to both historical facts and literature.
Also I was personnally touched by the burden the Dr Holmes carried out through out the book. His burdens were as real as any one of us, failures and critics in professional life, insecurities and probably the yearn for respect from your own family(son), and still being able to think rationally and come to logical conclusions.
One has got lot to learn from this book.

Picked up a copy of "The Dante Club" at a library sale of used books (where I buy a lot of my books). It was in the group of 3 for $1. What a treasure it is-it's like finding a gold nugget in a pile of sand. And I have never read Dante's work, but will do so now. I can't wait to read the Poe novel (will buy it fresh, not from a used book sale), as I have been a fan of Poe's stories since a teen-ager - I'm now 69. Will pass "The Dante Club" on to my son, who is a literature major, and also has a law degree. Keep writing! |

For the longest time there has been only one author who I can honestly say I was always in eager wait for new material to come from. However, this man has passed on a couple years back and though there is another novel set to be released by him this winter, it is good to know that there more to come, hopefully, in the future from you. There are many gems in life, but only a few can catch the eye of either a floored ambition and now by enchanting literature once again. Thank You Matthew Pearl for reassuring the anticipations are still to come. As Ever, S. |

I picked up The Poe Shadow in the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport while waiting for my flight back to Florida last weekend. I was interested because I remember visiting the Poe House in Philadelphia during my childhood. I've read a few of Poe's works and thought the book sounded exciting. Boy, was I right!
I'm a very slow reader as I always take in every word & often catch myself "performing" the novel in my head. I couldn't put this one down. I had to read the interview and additional info about Poe's death at the end. I feel eager to return to Poe's house, which I will absolutely do when back in PA.
Thanks for this great read. I'll keep an eye out for your work! |

Monsieur Pearl,

Congratulations on your The Poe Shadow novel!
I´ve just finished reading it, and it had been a while since I had been that hooked on a book! In fact, I have the illustrated complete Edgar Allan Poe works on my desk right now, and Im looking forward to rereading it!
After Poe, The Dante Club is the second on my reading list!
Thanks so much for your brilliant work and keep it up.
Truly hope that your 3rd one is coming out soon! :-)

these books are awesome. i am only to chapter fifteen in the poe shadow but the contrast between duponte and clark is already killing me am i the only one who noticed that clark seems to be a nieve want-to-be? still like the book though good symbols and good social statements and sayings and poeisms riddled throughout. the dante club was my favorite modern piece of literature though because i love dante so much. i can't imagine the difficulty of the task of depicting the authors so many americans love as normal people and not the demigods we see them as. masterfully done; truely dante rests in the fourth sphere and smiles. |

I've read them both....twice. I came to the site to see what's next. Good literary fiction is hard to find...style is at least as important as story...you are right up there with the master of style...John Updike...even though your subject matter couldn't be more different. Thanks for the many hours of peace I find in reading... |

I was first introduced to Dante, oddly enough, after reading Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's SF novel "Inferno" back in the late 70s. Having just finished "The Dante Club" I must say I that I absolutely enjoyed it. Thanks for the novel, and thanks for re-kindling my Dante spark. I'm really looking forward to the Longfellow translation.
Best regards and continued success |

The Poe shadow was an excellent book as Dante and has been read a lot in Cyprus. We need more books and stories..... because the words coming up from that book releave the great hunger that the story creates to our minds as we passing through the pages and also releves the great need that we, people have for reading and travel through the magic words of Pearl's imagination....congradulations!!!! |

An extraordinary blend of scholarship & storytelling
(THE DANTE CLUB). I've not experienced this kind of
literary "rush" since meeting up with Perez-Reverte's
sinister book mercenary or Mark Danielewski's even more sinister House. Loved the "Tennyson oath moment", and the grand idea of solving a mystery, utilizing literary
"clews". And THE POE SHADOW lies waiting... |
