Hi, Matthew. I just started reading "The Dante Club" last after finishing David Anderson's "The Gargoyle." Have you read it? Subconsciously I selected DC from the bookshelf, where it has been gathering dust for about three years now, and found myself amused that both "The Gargoyle" and "The Dante Club" have "The Inferno" in common. I may just find myself reading the whole Divine Comedy next. I've only read bits and pieces of it for English courses at the U of U, but look forward now more than ever to reading the entire text. Thank you for your book. I look forward to finishing it in the next week, and hope to bring home a copy of "The Poe Shadow" soon.

Mr. Pearl,
I teach two Advanced Placement English Literature courses at New Ulm High School and I just handed out The Dante Club to my students. They are so excited to read it. We did an indepth study of Dante's The Inferno. I have a panel presentation coming to our high school in two weeks of religious leaders from 11 different faiths (Catholic, Lutheran, Buddhist, Atheist, etc.). My students have so many questions about the afterlife. They are looking forward to reading your text and making the connections to what they have already read. I just wish there were more teacher resources out there for your novel. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Mr Pearl, I have just started reading The Poe Shadow. I walked into a bookstore to get a present for a friend, and as soon as i saw the name "Poe". I HAD to get the book. I am fascinated by not only his work, but his life has become my obsession. The Poe Museum in Richmond, even though Mr Poe never lived there, i visit every time i visit the city. I'm only a little disappointed that i had no other choice but to get it in Spanish, which loses much of your narrative. I wish i could have gotten it in English, but i'm still hooked on the book. Thank you so much for making my summer a little more bearable!

I am currently in the process of reading your wonderful novel, "The Poe Shadow," on which I compliment you for your excellent use of dialogue, which parallels my own and that of Ayn Rand. I, too, am an author, and specialize in medical pieces, although I am currently in the process of completing my first 800-page novel, a Faustian story titled "Fountain of Youth." I appreciate your tips on literary agent and publishing house query letters, posted in the course of your recent chat at www.librarything.com/topic/74513. Looking forward to future readings from you, as well as your scrutiny of my upcoming novel. My newspaper medical pieces can be viewed at http://albertprovocateur.blogspot.com or www.wtxcc.com in pdf format. Many thanks. Keep up the good work, and please don't get a swelled head. Mr. Pearl,
I recently began reading "The Poe Shadow" and I have to say I am completely absorbed in it. However, and I hope this does not offend you, I am writing to you in the hopes that you might be able to give me some advice. I am a history major and hoping to teach at the college level one day. I also have always wanted to teach at Harvard or another Ivy League institution. Seeing as you have taught at Harvard and attended it, I was hoping you might know if you have to have attended Harvard or another Ivy League in order to try to acquire a position there. Any indicators you may be able to give me of how all of this works would be most appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks and praise,

Huge fan of your first two novels, and I never thought I'd enjoy one of your works beyond The Dante Club. I just finished reading The Last Dickens on my flight back to the States, and I must confess I must have woken the people nearest me in my excitement during one of the major plot twists towards the end! Matthew, not Mr. Pearl, because you are like a friend to me. I've just finished reading "The last Dickens", it's absolutely awesome. I really love it. I've read "The Dante Club" (excellent too) some time ago and now I have to read the second book (I don't know why but I bought the third book before the second one). This last book is wonderful!
I really feel I've been with Dickens, James R. Osgoods, Rebbeca Sands, Tom Branagan and the rest. I'm sure I'll read it again in the future.
Please, continue writing books like this.
Thank you so much.
To the others readers: if you liked The Dante Club you're going to love The last Dickens!

Oh my... wow!
Dear Mr. Pearl,
it really is a pity I never read "The Dante club" before. I thought (that's completely my fault) it was some kind of "Da Vinci code" (since when Brown wrote that book, there were so many of that kind of "conspiracy" novels that it was impossible to find which of them was readable ad which was trash). I'm a student at the University of Bologna and I'm graduating in Italianistic next year (that's my second degree), so I know my little Dante ;-D and when I first saw the book in the book shops, 5 years ago, I thought it was impossible to link Dante to a thriller, so I said "damn what a loser! He surely wrote this novel after reading some summary of the Divine Comedy and he imagined some murderer killing people in New York or Los Angeles in a ridiculous way and then mixed it with CSI and some love affair of the principal character" (I didn't know it was set in 1860's!), then, 2 months ago, I found it in our public library and I had nothing to do so i took it. Could you imagine my surprise when, after looking behind the main page, I found out you're a real expert and you really know about what you were writing?! And, page after page, I discovered not only that it wasn't just a "thriller" but an historical novel (my favourite genre!), but also that it opens a window on how Dante came in USA, thanks to Longfellow. And I really haven't the idea that SO many people had interest in Dante all above the world (from Korea to India and Iceland)???!!! I'm both scared and excited from knowing this and also from knowing that people, after reading your novel, had interest in reading the Divine Comedy! So please accept my deepest apologies and my greetings for the future (and I also apologize for my English mistakes), and I promise you I'll be reading soon the Longfellow's translation (or better "transformation") and maybe you'll be happy to know I already took "the Poe shadow", though I'm not sure I can read it in a short time beacuse of my exams. But, sincerely, Thank you. (P.S: I searched for your essay but in Bologna we don't have the 1999's number of "Dante studies". I would appreciate very much if you can send it to me by e-mail! and I also can help you if you're in need for any documents you can't find in USA. helping a collegue is a duty and, in this case, a pleasure).
Yours,
Cosimo

The Dante Club was superb: having lived in Boston for a while myself, I thought you did a fabulous job of capturing the look and feel of 19th century Boston as I might have imagined it, including its prominent literary characters. Your research is excellent. Now I'm listening to The Last Dickens and loving it just as much. Your character development and place descriptions are vivid. I have only one slight comment about something that I hope can be fixed. At times, the pronoun grammar is incorrect: the objective form is used when it should be subjective. Although incorrect forms of pronouns are now, sadly, used in every day speech, they certainly would've been used correctly in 1870. I heard one today on Disc 8 of The Last Dickens read by Paul Michael. I'm sorry, I can't remember the sentence but it was at the Falstaff Inn when Osgood was recovering. "Him" was used instead of the appropriate "he". I'm surprised your editors didn't pick it up as well as a few others I've heard earlier in the book. That aside, I think it's wonderfully written and look forward to listening to the rest as well as reading your other books, past and future.

My congratulations for your high quiality work!! All the praise is already said, so just one comment: the spanish translation doesn't reach the level of the original (of course the story does, but not the feeling of the descriptions). I first read The Poe Shadow in english, and then The Dante Club in spanish, and I really noticed the difference. Maybe there's nothing to do with that... The Last Dickens was suggested by one of my high school students. We had been reading Great Expectations and we had had a lot of fun. My student told me his grandfather had given it to him on his birthday. Letter to the Editor | THE INDEPENDENT | Sep 14, 2011:

Statues of Dickens
Simon O'Hagan set a question in his Saturday quiz (10 September) which relied on a myth for its answer.
Of course, through the efforts of the media, most of your readers might believe that Charles Dickens actually stated in his will that he did not want a statue. But it is not so. And he did not state it anywhere else. His will did make clear to "his friends" that he did not want a "monument, memorial or testimonial" as p art of his funeral (which he hoped would be inexpensive, plain and private), but that did not give licence to people to say that his will forbade (or could have been intended to forbid) anyone raising a statue to him, for ever.
There are already three statues to Dickens. One in Sydney, Australia (where two of his sons were present at the unveiling), one in Philadelphia (which all Dickensians honour when they visit there), and one which pops out at regular intervals from the clock on the "Dickens World" monument at Chatham to address the visitors.
The one to be erected in his birthplace of Portsmouth, on the road where he was born, will be the most important. And, as the head of the Dickens family, Mark Dickens, has written: "He would be delighted to know he is so honoured in his home town."

Our business: mankind

There's something terribly wrong with this picture - "S.F. food banks starving for funds" (Aug. 20) - because of a 40 percent cut by Congress versus the recent revelation of a huge bailout the feds gave big banks and corporations ("Wall St. elite got more than $1 trillion," Business, Aug. 23).
I hear the words of Dickens' character Marley, the ghost: " 'Business!' cried the Ghost, wringing its hands again. 'Mankind was my business! The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were, all, my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!' A tale of two Europes
SIR - I always enjoy the literary references that you sneak into your articles, such as "The best of times, the worst of times" in Bagehot's column on Franco-British relations (Dec 3rd). However, I recall that at the end of this particular Dickens classic the Brit loses his head and the French carry on knitting. Surely that outcome would not be the far, far better thing that David Cameron has ever done.
Perhaps this week Bagehot should call on Jacod Marley for some vision. "A Christmas Carol" was first published on December 17th 1843, ahd has a much sweeter outcome.

Even Bill Sykes tried it on
Boyd Tonkin's article on Dickens was most interesting (Art & Books, 23 December), and clearly Dickens ably captured the relationship between the oppressor and the oppressed in a capitalist society. This was brought home to me recently when watching Oliver Twist on TV. Just as Bill Sykes realises all is up with his way of life, he turns to Fagan's band of wretched pickpockets and assorted minor criminals, and snarls, "We are all in this together".

Letter to the Editor | THE GUARDIAN | Feb 7, 2012:

The literary scholar Ruth Richardson believes a London tradesman called Goodge may have inspired the surname of Dickens's Ebenezer Scrooge (Dickens scholar discovers ghosts of neighbours past, 2 February). She seems unaware that the original Scrooge was a Scot. In 1841 Charles Dickens visited the Canongate churchyard in Edinburgh's Royal Mile and spotted a memorial slab to Ebenezer Lennox Scroggie, "meal man" (ie corn merchant). Misreading "meal" as "mean", the author was struck by the thought that a man might be such a miser that his meanness was commemorated on his grave marker. A Christmas Carol appeared two years later in 1843.
