| $ale: | I started this project several years ago, but I'm bailing out due to back problems. At 60, I'm finally recognising that my days of abusing my body are over.
The motorcycle is the trusted and reliable dual-sport steed...the Kawasaki KLR650. It has 16,386 miles and was owned by a senior like myself. Never thrashed off-road. The doohickey has been replaced. I believe it has lead shot in the handlegrips to dampen vibration. Tires have tread, but the rear will need replacing before too long. Gas tank is perfect with no dents. The Sputnik sidecar is an all steel Russian built unit. They are light at around 200 pounds. The front hinges up for easy access and there's a trunk behind the passenger seat. There is no windshield, but one could be fabricated and installed easily. This sidecar has no brakes installed and many sidecar riders prefer that. Sputnik did make a cable operated drum brake and that could be retro-fitted quite easily. Dauntless Motors is one source for Sputnik parts. The sidecar attach kit was purchased from Dauntless. When Dauntless has these sidecars in stock, they sell for around $2,500. I have driven this unit, but found that the suspension on my KLR was weak. It wallowed too much off road and felt unsafe. I did feel comfortable on the highway and have driven it as fast as 55 mph So what does this unit need to be totally functional? I feel a general beefing up of the suspension would make it a much more stable platform. Some riders even go so far as installing sway bars. The battery needs replacing, but I didn't want to go to that bother in case the new owner wished to install a small car battery mounted in the sidecar. Once the suspension on the bike is beefed up, the sidecar will need to be re-adjusted. I have a box with a few spare oil filters and some engine and fork oil. A replacement monoshock and rear spring. A few spark plugs. The KLR650 owners manual and service manual as well as the classic yellow book on riding sidecars. All plastic parts are there for the bike, but some is not mounted. The bike runs fine, I just did a 2600+ mile trip through the southwest on it.
